So I saw a post on reddit. Someone was claiming that their s8 navbar was already burning into their phone screen. And sure enough after one week it was already happening.
He used a gray image that he zoomed into so you can see where the navbar buttons are burning into.
Just find a large gray image on Google and use a gallery app to zoom in and see if your navbar is already burning in. Kind of bummed that my phone is already doing this as well.
Yup. I can comfirm. I was kinda expecting this but not that fast.
I see it as well on mine. The top of the black nav-bar (I have mine set to black but it's transparent in Nova Launcher) and the home button is somewhat noticeable on a grey area. Not awful. But it's there. But I'm also gonna try to steer clear of this thread and not let it bother me . Best phone I've owned still.
Edit:
My S2, S3, and Note 4 does this. Pretty heavy with the notification bar on S2 and Note 4. Less noticeable on S3. I guess I personally can't get away from it.
Same story here. Burn in with navbar and buttons. Navbar was constantly black and I never use my phone above 50% brightness. Been using it for less then a week. That's really surprising.
I have a Nexus 6, Galaxy S7 edge, and the S8+ which I've had since Monday. The S8 has no burn in whatsoever. I've checked using a grey, white, red, blue, and pink image at max brightness. The S7 edge, which has been my daily driver since release, also has no burn in. Not even on the status bar. The Nexus 6, which I used as a daily driver for a year and on-and-off for the few months after, has no burn in either. I thought I could see a faint bit of burn in of the top half of the on-screen circular home button but it isn't even that either because the "burn in" is bigger than the home button and is a bit higher than where the home button would be. I guess these panels wear differently for everyone, or maybe some people have bad displays considering they're getting burn in within a week of getting the phone but I've had my Nexus 6 for 2+ years now with no signs of burn in. I'm a moderate to heavy user as well, browsing reddit, watching youtube and netflix on max brightness, web browsing, etc etc, and I've used all my phones like that. I don't know about other users but I'm more then confident in all of my amoled phones and I will still be confident a year after owning my S8.

My OnePlus X witch is almost 2 years old has 0 burn in too. That's why I'm shocked by this week old burn in on S8.
Do not put your phone to that red brightness level it's only for outside
I can't replicate this on my S7E or the S8.
Don't have it on mine either

You guys can enable immersive status bar to prevent burn in. Autohides status bar and when it does appear it's a transparent black so that's pretty neat.
Open adb type, adb shell, once you see your device your ready to write commands. Here they are
HIDE STATUS BAR: adb shell settings put global policy_control immersive.status=*
HIDE NAVIGATION BAR: adb shell settings put global policy_control immersive.navigation=*
HIDE BOTH BARS*adb shell settings put global policy_control immersive.full=*
RESET TO NORMAL: adb shell settings put global policy_control null*

I thought it was pretty neat also. its working pretty good but a few bugs, in Samsung browser it won't show recent open tabs for some reason. Also when trying to exit the keyboard in messaging if you swipe up for the navbar to display it brings up the keyboard. I also wish I could have the navbar stay on the screen a little longer, its set to auto hide at 2.0 seconds, I would like it to be around 5.0 seconds. I'm looking for adb command for this but I'm having troubles finding the correct command path for setting this, any help with this will be greatly appreciated.
I have Note 3 since release, I'm not even sure fall 2013 or 2014? Using it daily all this time except maybe for a couple months misadventure with N7 and there is absolutely no burn in whatsoever. And that phone has fixed home screen, with same 4 icons on the bottom since original setup back when I bought it. It is on a second battery, which was breeze to replace, which will not be a case with S8. Anyhow, there is absolutely no burn in on my 10 day old S8 and I don't think there will be and even if does, I don't care, it's the part of the screen that's rarely used for anything else but navbar. Rest of the screen is never static, so that should not be a problem. My much bigger worry is: will the battery last and not to drop it and break the darn screen, I did that with N7 despite having a case.
If the nav buttons are burning in the shouldn't the status bar icons also burn in?
I'm not seeing any burn in. Which is interesting. Has everyone disabled the always on screen's home button square which always stays on and can burn in?
I have it disabled and I don't see burn in. Ive had it since launch day
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.blasterbyte.burn_infix
Worth a try if you havr burn in. It's usually reversible if it's not to bad.
Hi everyone,
I would like to know if you have the same "problem ". I've received a galaxy s8 last Friday. Everything was great except one. I've a noticed a potential image retention. For example, the (black) navbar remained on the screen for 3-5 second after closing an app. Or the black bar on the top (when apps aren't full screen) was noticeable also after closing. So I went to a store to see their galaxy s8 and s8+ and test it. The results was clear, their galaxy s8 had the same "problem" but not the s8+. So I decided to change my phone and get a new. Surprise, same thing... then I went to another store and their s8 also had this potential issue but not their s8+. So I've seen 4 galaxy s8 having this problem. My question is simple. Am I the only one ? Will it get worse ? Is it normal ? I don't think that my store is going to change my phone again. Keep in mind that this "image retention" is more noticeable on a blue or gray picture. Thanks for your answers.
Actually, I just realised that burn in image should be darker, not lighter. So, I guess it's not a burn in - that's a problem which happens when you're using Navbar Apps with constantly black navbar. Because I look at my home button burn in and it's the same colour that the test of the screen. So, looks like the screen itself "aged" a bit, except navbar. I disabled navbar apps to see if this problem will go away in a couple days.
I figured I'd post a photo of mine just cause. It's not awful but it's there. Most of you will barely notice it probably.

I got as pissed and scared as you when i saw this burn in thing BUT i don't think this is permanent burn in. Here's why. I donwloaded a pure white jpeg with a black stripe in the middle, made it full screen and hit the brightness at 100% for 30 seconds. Than i checked again the grey jpeg at 100% brightness and there it was, a clear shaddow of the black stripe from the previous photo witch slowly went away in 15-20 secs.... BUT no burn in whatsoever. I think it's just some image retention and seems temporary. Leave the grey photo on display for more than 30secs and the nav bar will blend and the shaddow will dissapear. I wouldn't worry too much. Tested the old s7edge the same way and it does the same thing. I think this screen has the same quality if not better than the old one.

I've been looking for a way to do this for a while and I figured out a work around
What you will need
-xposed installer
-a module called tinted status bar
First install the module and reboot ... Now go into the module and go to settings UNCHECK respect kitkat api
... Then go to Google in the apps list and change all activities to number 0000000 in both nav and status bar.... The find the lock screen app and do the Same the result should be this

This works for the Navigation Bar but not for the Notification Bar
This did the exact opposite of what I wanted it to do. Instead of removing the gradient, it removed the entire bar but kept the gradient (I'm using xblast to make my bars solid). I'll post a screenshot if I get a reply.

You haven't posted what you want to do in this thread, so I'm answering out of context.
This makes the bar transparent. That's what the first 00 means. You could replace that with ff to make it solid. If you're modifying with xblast too, you'll likely conflict.
This should remove the gradient under normal circumstances
Edit... I've tested and confirm the below works also with Nova launcher
1) installing the module allows the status bar colour to be determined by the app that is open. E.g. tapatalk with dark theme makes status bar Grey. Chrome makes it white. Nova makes it black
2) untick respect kitkat api is what stops kitkat enforcing the gradient.
3) select your launcher (for me, Nova) then set the status bar colour to what you like in "all activities". Most people just want rid of gradient but want to keep transparency so the 00000000 is selected. Otherwise it will default to whatever the launcher decides which for me was black

Let me elaborate: I used XBLAST to make my status and navigation bars solid (stat=orange, nav=white). However, the gradient that is usually there actually extends beyond the normal height of both bars, leaving a small amount of gradient visible on my wallpaper (whose top half is the same value orange and bottom is pure white). What I'm left with is (bottom up) white, grey, white, orange, dark orange, orange. What I want is to remove that left over gradient and make the bottom half of the entire screen white and the top half entirely orange.
Though, now that I think of it, I can get rid of XBLAST and just use this to remove the gradient, while extending my background to the very top and bottom of the screen. (as long as it actually removes the gradient)
But if you have a solution (besides that) I'd like to hear it as well.
Thanks for making me think.

It's only the "respect kitkat api" part you need. The problem is, this app colours the status bar according to the app that is in focus on your screen too. You can set default colours for when the app is not colouring the status bar so you could set that orange. You can also turn off 3rd party apps from changing the status bar colour.
The gradient itself shouldn't extend beyond the status bar so maybe you just need to use something other than xblast to colour your status bar?
PS... I never used this app before. I don't care about gradient but I love it now. It's like PA colours but I can back up the settings now.

1) I'm assuming the reason it was extending was because I used it along with xblast, and like you said they conflicted. I'm disabling it now to see what happens.
2a) I'm running PAC, (just installed this weekend) would it have PA colours in it? I haven't checked, but if I can do this without using xposed at all, that's even better.
2b) Since I'm running PAC and it's a nightly, I'm getting FCs every time I go into app settings (aka can't clear data that way), so it's getting kind of tricky to revert my settings for this app (again nightly, I have a bug where the text stays in the background while scrolling, making it difficult to read).
I'm about to leave work, I'll reply with how it went later.
I haven't used PA since JellyBean so I'm not sure if per app settings still exist. I assume they do.

I've done everything here besides the Google part. Can you explain what is meant by "Google"? I have Google Search, GSF, Google Play Services, but not just "Google". I am on PAC if that helps. And my launcher is Launcher3 (which I hate, along with half of this AOSP crap. Their Google Keyboard is the worst kb I've ever used /rant).
And if anyone knows if it's possible to do this just with PAC settings, I'd appreciate knowing how.
He means the google launcher. Assuming that's the launcher you use.

I just did a bunch of changes, and I found a few things.
1) I can not get the gradient to go away, no matter what I change. I have followed these directions exactly, then cleared data, rebooted, and tried again, and yet the gradient remains.
2) The gradient is absolutely without a doubt longer than the nav and status bars. Using only this app, I was able to make the nav bar (but interestingly NOT the status bar) solid white, and yet I can still clearly see the gradient. It seems almost that it is built in to both the Google Now Launcher and Launcher3.
3) Like stated above, I can not get the status bar to change. I don't know if it is (again) something built into the launchers, but it just won't turn solid (or transparent). However, opening recent apps will turn it solid.
4) Even after turning off respect KitKat API, the status bar changes color based on the app I'm using.
I've decided to use Nova Launcher. It works, so I'm good.

hi, apologies if this has been posted before but it's really driving me nuts. 2 days ago everything was fine: i'm simply using c-locker as a lock screen. then yesterday i noticed there was another lock screen which can only be unlocked by swiping up. the status bar also changed. whereas before the bar went all the way up to the edge, now there's a black bar. the phone signal moved to the left side. to view notification icons (like an envelope for sms), the sound would come but the status bar would stay the same. by clicking on the status bar only then would the other icons appear and the status bar would go to the original (be all the way to the end of the screen). i'm still googling about but so far zilch.
solved!
my wife's phone is a nokia 1020 (we bought it as she loves the camera). it rang last night and she was in the gym. so i answered it and afterwards i noticed that the lockscreen and the status bar were very similar to the one i was having issues with in my edge. so i went over to my edge and uninstalled windows 10 launcher. i had previously installed it because my wife wanted to see if i could replicate her phone interface. so i installed but never used the launcher. when the edge did an ota update, windows 10 launcher was part of the other apps touched. whatever updates happened, the launcher forced it's lockscreen and status bar profiles on top of my existing setup. so, in case you plan to install the win10 launcher, maybe it's best to use it on it's own.
Just got an S7 about a month ago, and it's all been smooth-sailing until this morning.
I was browsing through my gallery when I noticed a transparent bar at the top of the screen, where the Status Bar usually is (The Status Bar is hidden in the Gallery app when viewing pictures). This bar is consistent throughtout all apps on the phone, including on the home screen, and the notification bar. It's a different shade to the rest of the phone, with the look of the image "behind" the bar being distinctly different from that of the rest of the screen. I really don't know how to describe it. This is driving me crazy, because it's a new phone and I'm not sure if this is issue is software-related (an overlay of some sort) or a problem with the actual screen.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
PS: The phone has been dropped once, but it wasn't major enough to cause something like this to happen (I think).
EDIT: The transparent bar is exactly the same size as the status bar.
Sounds like burn-in, nothing you can do other than replace the screen
Happens to Amoled screens when you leave the same image in the same place on the screen for extended lengths of time / high brightness
It's what screensavers were designed for PCs back in the days of green screens
Sounds an awful lot like what happened to my moms phone recently and it took me a few minutes to figure it out. Maybe you accidentally took a screenshot and made that your wallpaper. So see if changing the wallpaper makes it go away.

OP says the bar is showing even inside of apps
Look at the navigation bar in the screenshot attached to this post, the application UI is black, the status bar is black, and the most common color is black. Ignoring all of this, the navigation bar is still white, and this will ironically burn the navigation bar in if you use the application too often.
Why can't the color just automatically match the status bar? It's kind of dumb to always have it as white, in applications with a black UI it looks ugly and ironically burns in. Doing the exact opposite of what the update was made to fix. There is also no way to change this, it's impossible to have any other color than something very light. This isn't a problem for me, because I always hide the bar in use (looks great), but for someone who doesn't want to do it, this will be a huge issue and annoyance.
My thoughs exactly. I have a lot of black apps and themes which frankly now look ridiculous. It is actually off putting having a huge white bar at the bottom when everything else is black or dark (and no, before some smart arse decides to say it, hiding it is NOT the solution).
I have also noticed in pretty much every app I have used that I now have this stupid bar pop up just above the nav bar which says press here to go full screen (which doesn;t actually go full screen anyway, all it does is get rid of the empty gap caused by this message in the first place). I mean WTF? I never had that showing up before and never had any issues before either.

A "huge" issue is a bit of an overstatement in my opinion. Samsung has done this on purpose to make sure that the pixels that are turned off when the nav bar is black don't burn in slower than all the other pixels on the screen, which would create an even uglier sight if that happens.

But now the navigation bar will burn in faster than the rest of the screen, it is still a huge issue... The issue is still not solved, and it looks even uglier than before. A black navigation bar on a white themed app looks good, because it blends to the black bezel, and doesn't attract attention from the content of the app due to being practically invisible (only the icons to navigate are visible).
White catches the eye, and a white navigation bar on a black app is very distracting from the content you're trying to see. It also breaks the immersion of similar colors being displayed on the entire screen, a uniformity of darkness across the screen looks good, but not, if there is a white bar in the bottom breaking the immersion.
It's beyond me why Samsung hasn't made the navigation bar sync colors with the status bar. The goal to avoid burn-ins is to have a similar brightness / color on the whole display, to avoid differences that add up to burning in over time. The status bar shifts color based on application, this is why it doesn't burn in. It's white on white applications, and black on black applications. Copying this color for the navigation bar would be the perfect fix for burn-ins, but instead Samsung turned the bar bright white under ANY conditions.

What if I want to keep the default stock look? It's not a proper solution to change the entire device's theme to be black, just to have a black navigation bar. This also brings back the burn-in issue on light themed apps, the navigation bar being black will burn in slower than the rest of the screen.
Nvm
Totally agree. Not only this but the whole software seems like it is not there yet.
I have actually disabled automatic updates on my S8+ both in normal settings and under developer settings after hearing about this update. Shouldn't that be enough? Or can I prevent the update entirely somehow without root?

If you want to completely stop system updates, you can do that with a package disabler. There are paid ones that have tons of features like data clearing, but those aren't needed in this case. The Adhell ad blocker has a package disabler built in to it, you can download the Adhell app from here if you want: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.getadhell.androidapp
After downloading and opening the application, it prompts you to give it permissions to enable the Knox service, used for blocking ads and disabling packages (no root needed). After this is done, tap the middle option in the bottom, that says "Package disabler". A list of applications appears, you can just scroll down to find the system update application, and flip the switch on the right to disable it. After this you won't get notifications of system updates anymore, because the application used for them is technically uninstalled. It still is there, but it's not in use anymore.

Ohh, I actually have booth Adhell and Package Disabler (The individual app) I will disable that thanks!
I asked the same question on r/oneplus.
So I've bought a OP 7 Pro just 1 month ago and I'm really paranoid about burn in.
I searched a lot about amoled technology and from what i read i assumed screen burn in it's not something recoverable. And I took all the security measures to not make it happen. Auto-brightness, screen timeout to 30s, AOD turned off, and i never leave a static image on my phone.
Today I noticed that when i plugged my phone and the colors screensaver started, the fingerprint icon left a visible mark like it was burned in. But it lasted only a couple seconds and then it disappeared. Same thing happens with the signal icon on the status bar.
So, is that screen burn in? Or it's just image retention? And why is it recovering? Should I worry about it becoming permanent? I'm not even enjoying the phone anymore :c
Sorry for my english and thank you
Not that big of a deal. Especially with screen technology these days. Walk into your local carrier store, or Best Buy, look at an old phone that has an amoled screen and that's left on all the time for display. That's burn in. When the image stays there after a long period of time and doesn't disappear when the screen is turned off and on. When I had my S8 and S9, it was noticeable that the clock and always-on home button shifted all of the time. With screen technology the way it is now, a lot of OEM skins have some sort of burn-in protection in place. I've left the screen on my 7 Pro on for hours on end, alas at the lowest brightness, with the screen timeout set to never and I've never had an issue.
I'm paranoid about burn-in too. I use navigation gestures and systemui tuner app to hide status bar. I use battery widget reborn to see battery percentage and other notifications can be seen in notifications pull down shade. Use auto brightness to change brightness more frequently. I use amoled antiburn app to check for any burn-in. All clear so far.
Since launch, Not much chatter concerning this as an issue... Enjoy your device
I have Google maps burned in..? I hate it because you can see see on a white background alot.
