I think I can deal with the screen problem I posted about, but I just don't know if I can get over the back speaker. Playing music through it sounds absolutely horrible.
I use my phone as an alarm clock in the morning which will play music. The terrible sound quality of the music coming from the phone is enough to wake me up and wanna just smash the phone. And no that, just because it wakes me up does not mean its a good thing. I really don't know what there is to do about this problem.
The actual problem is it sounds like there is no bass at all. I know that commonly phone speakers have yet to really add any kind of subwoofer into phones, but I don't think I have come across any speaker that sounds quite like this. It isn't enjoyable to listen to at all. It sounds like screeching. Its like the speaker just has the treble levels all the way up and the bass all the way down. So all I hear are high pitched shreeks instead of singing.
For the most part I load high quality music (320kbps) onto my phone, so I know that's not the problem. I have enjoyed listening to the exact same music files on my old Mytouch3G and also a Nokia 5310 and both sound much better. I don't know what it is that is making the music and speaker setting while in a phone call sound so bad.
I don't think HTC would put a terrible speaker back there. Is anyone else having this issue or should I take back my phone and see if the next one sounds better?

I think it is not the best speaker but still better than the N1 loudspeaker. I think it's an HTC problem not with your phone. But feel free to go to a t-mobile store and compare yours to another MT4G.
I agree it's a problem with the MT4G line and not individual phones, but HTC has made quality speakers on their phones. The Evo 4G is a perfect example of this.
CM6 comes with an equalizer you can use for sound so that might make things better. Personally I think sound drivers might be the issue more than hardware b/c if you listen to music on the MT4G thru headphones it sounds like listening to a recording of a recording.

But I thought that the equalizer mod only worked for music through headphones and not through the actual speaker.

The speaker is kinda crappy I agree. But a little better than the G2. If you lower the volume it is a little better but then hard to here. This is one issue I wish was better.

Don't know if it is just me but my speaker seems to have gotten better with use. Maybe broken in, who knows maybe it is just me settling for not perfect but i think it has gotten better with use. Maybe it is just wishful thinking.
speaker stinks on this phone and the G2. period. i have yet to use it for music thru headphones yet. but i dont use my phone as a media player unless its on the airplane or something like that.
I agree the speaker isn't great but it isn't that bad. Though I have to admit, the Vibrant had a great speaker. VERY loud and very clear.
Have you tried playing it thru external speakers? like ihome thru the 3.5mm jack? the sounds good enough, but every now and then it sends the phone haywire skipping track after track every two seconds and randomly dialing??

once i fully rooted & installed Evil Desire HD port my speaker was really loud & clear!
It's good to have bluetooth speakers handy especially for both phone calls and audio.
(Creative T12w is the best bet for home use, but it doesn't have HSP/HFP)

I have the Jawbone JAMBOX and love it. I use it in places where I used to listen to the speaker.
As for using the speaker, I guess I haven't used a phone where I was like "that's awesome!" The best it's sounded is having all my music adjusted to 95dB using MP3Gain, and the volume about 1 or 2 steps away from max.
That the only thing i hate about the Mytouch 4G... its not that big of a deal, but switching from the Touch Pro 2 (dual speaker) to the Mytouch 4g (one speaker) was a downgrade for me but hey you have to admit the phone freaking awesome!

The G2 sounds way worse than the MT4G. Side by side, there is a HUGE difference.

I totally agree. I tried both side by side. Was still stuck on wanting a g2 but I had the choice to pay 200 for a g2 or 70 for mt4g. I'm glad I got this phone. I'm very satisfied with it.

I heard alot about nexus S sound with voodoo but is stock really supposed to be rather average? While the sound "quality" seems really good the volume levels are just not good enough. My bose headphones sound so weak compared to an iphone, what gives??
Even an HTC desire had higher volume. Is voodoo supposed to make it much louder? Why cant we have it without rooting?
Update: I just tried my headphones on an iphone and well it isnt as loud as I remember it was. Whats happened is that I got spoiled by the headphone amp in my PC soundcard and thus perceived the nexus sound to be really weak in comparison. I had not yet used my headphones on a phone since getting a soundcard.
Obviously I cant expect the nexus to beat my PC and it actually compares really well with the iphone 4. I am sorry guys I feel really stupid for making this topic.
Disappointed? Not in the very least. I'm actuall extremely pleased and actually very ****ing surprised of the quality... even without Voodoo enhancements.
I had a Desire before this and that had a very tinny and high-mid/high heavy focus. It was very unpleasant watching videos let alone listening to music.
When I first heard the Nexus s (stock gingerbread at that time) I was in awe. The sound was very clear and loud. It even appeared to produce unnaturally powerful and clear low frequencies for a speaker this size.
I think something is very wrong with your phone if you prefer the Desire's sound.

Later edit: I just now realize you were actually complaining about the sound volume and not the quality, but still I can't say I find it quieter than the Desire.
However, you are right. Voodoo can boost the volume quite a bit.

Perhaps you need a headphone amplifier.
With Voodoo, the sound quality is exceptional, but quality has nothing to do with volume. In fact, turning up the volume in the phone too far will have a negative impact on the sound quality (distortion).
There are a number of factors affecting the perceived volume of a pair of headphones. Driver efficiency and impedance are the main ones; some output devices are designed for headphones which require high voltage and others for current.
The Nexus S with Voodoo, in airplane mode, playing high quality FLAC media, plugged into an amplifier, sounds pretty darn good through my AKG K271 MKII cans. Also pretty stellar through Meyer PA.

And I agree with d-h. I'm only using a pair of sennheiser cx300 but I can never turn it all the way up (I even set the limit at 3dB, rather than 5dB). I keep the volume around 1/2 to 3/4 of the way and that's plenty loud... even in noisy environments.

And as for headphone amplifier I never used one for other phones I mentioned. While sound quality has nothing to do with volume but without headphone amp, volume tends to be the biggest bottleneck on a smartphone. Since nexus S is hailed as one of the greatest smartphones sound wise I expect it to drive my bose headphones atleast as good as other phones.

I have poweramp 2.0, it can make things really loud but there is slight distortion on anything above the default level. I know my headphones can get ridiculously loud without distorting so it's the hardware limitation on the phone.

I use Volume+ on my head phones all the time, and there is no distortion. If you don't want to try it, that's fine ... I was simply trying to help.

Hope it works for you ... it has made a huge difference for me in all areas of device volume settings.

hey peeps get ur facts right. loudness doesn't equate to quality. nexus s with voodoo is fine and awesome details better then iPhone. note. MOST HEADPHONES REQUIRE AN AMPLIFIER.

Yes the speaker volume is rubbish but the Samsung galaxy and Nexus S have the best audio hardware compared to any top phone out at the moment. They rock a really top spec Wolfson audio chip.

The Galaxy Nexus has some Yamaha chip. Not nearly as good as the Wolfson in our NS, so it's not something to be really proud of - it's not shocking though. SGS and Nexus S are the two android phones with the best headphone output to date.

All of the settings in voodoo (aside from mono and bass boost) are there to enhance audio quality and processing. Feel free to turn on all features, just leave mono unticked and you can set bass boost to your preferred level of course. This shouldn't use noticeably more power or CPU usage either, if anything at all.

We already knew the HTC One had very good audio recording quality, that said, I'm very impressed with the S4's audio recording quality as well.
Yup. Although I do go to concerts, I never record the live performance. Still, it's good to see the GS4 can handle audio recording pretty decently even in that environment.
Is it just me or does S4 in this video have significantly better audio? Sounds more clear and less noisy?
Camera, HTC looks a bit more saturated than S4 to me.
When i listen to the two examples on my one the one's recording is clearly better, the sgs 4 sounds quite high pitched, the singers voice and cymbals aren't great.
Let's just hope HTC doesn't have to remove those microphones.

I listened to one of the other videos and the HTC One sounds better there where it had more bass..... so I'm afraid it'll suffer from the same issues.
I also don't get why the FoV is so narrow, it's nice in a way because it is more zoomed in, however that is the only situation really where you'd want that.
Both are very impressive quality, I still can't quite understand the rationale of recording gigs rather than just enjoying them, but at least doing it now means you get a decent recording and not an unintelligible mess.

When I listen to it on my PC, with a dedicated sound card, and through my speakers and sub. They sound so close in quality. I would give the edge to the S4 though.

i listened to both on my 2.1 speakers both are very good
GS4 feels more natural , ONE feel like there is DRC on the audio

+1 probably subjective but I prefer the more clearer vocals without much background distortion. Both sound good obviously.
I wonder which one is more "accurate" though.
It's pretty common that a less accurate sound is more appealing to the ear (the reason why stuff like Beats is liked). I'd rather a more "accurate" sound be recorded; I can always apply the processing afterwards but I can't remove it if it's already there.
Ok I have to be honest while listening to it carefully on my Genius speakers the S4 sounded more sharp and more detail while the HTC One had bad noises lol
Haha post this in the HTC side the comments will lean more HTC LOL this threads funny every time I see this year after year whos better Sammy or HTC . Well I have the one and the I9500 octs on the way and the sprint s4 soon too . But last time around s3 was louder less clear than HTC also cam on HTC in tests with my friends s4 HTC has a slight edge on the cam quality but s4 has more features . I can say I'm not biased to either cause both are great the childish anger is silly though .

Wow, on my AKG K240 Studio Headphones the One really sounds distorted while the S4 sounds absolute clear. I am actually thrilled how good the recording with the S4 sounds, even there is no "Voodoo Sound" (anybody remember this from the S1?). There is a heavy pumping on the One where the S4 seems to handle the dynamic much better.

You came from a phone that had an emphasis on sound quality to a dev friendly phone that's almost bare bones software wise. It should have been obvious.
You maybe had that BS Beats software on the HTC? It's just an equalizer pushing bass and treble... Sound is good to me. Streaming Google play music via Bluetooth in my car right now and it sounds great.
I do admit that the HTC one s had a great sound chip which I believe is confirmed in tests and I did use that phone for several months.

that would normally be a good thing for in-ear headphones. in-ear headphones are ussually extremely bass heavy unless they are very expensive hifi models. but most of us actually like the exhagerated bass, so $50 headsets don't bother us. i tend to like cheaper heasets and haven't gone for etymotics or anything yet because sometimes low-fi brings certain character to the mix, ever try playing a guitar through a PA system? or some reference monitors? ever wonder why people go through such lengths to re-create the past in music? it's not because the tech was better in 1930-1969. well in some ways it actually was compared to low end stuff today, but the flaws were as important to the music as the talent. i don't have my phone yet, so i can't say the headset is good, but because you prefer the htc headset doesn't mean it's better (nor does anything i said mean it's worse). so why not just use the htc headset instead of complaining on the internet? or buy a set you like? dennon has a bullet proof set of in-ear for $35 and they are very ballanced for a cheap set. but if you like extreme bass i liked the sound of my $80 xeers, they were the best for bass heavy blues/rock stuff like the black keys or the white stripes. these were not ballanced at all but in a way that was pleasing to the ear.
edit, just realized it's about the sound output of the phone.... not even sure the nexus comes with a headset since mine is still in shipping..... ya know the beats software can be added to any phone right? i mean i can't confirm it workes at all but people were doing this mod back when the one x and whatever it's predecessor was came out and everyone insisted that by adding some of the libs and an app that it sounded so much better...

Yeah, must be because of the Beats.
It's because of the Equalizer settings in the One. Install Viper4Android on this phone and set it up and you'll see the clarity and quality is just amazing. Beats products are highly Equalized especially the Laptops and Phones. They're also setup to go under completely flat line Equalizer when disable to make it sound bad without the beats audio. This in turn makes those people who know nothing about audio think beats audio is a god send when in fact it's just a regular equalizer that sounds awesome enabled and worse disabled. If Viper4Android (See forum thread here on xda) doesn't work yet then use an equalizer app from the market and play around with it. You'll enjoy your sound a lot more.
There's something wrong with Google Play Music. It sounds horrible I installed Rocket Player and it sounds superb. Just needs more volume. My S4 still sounds better by a small margin though.

Nexus doesn't come with headphones. Which is fine with me since I have never used set of headphones packaged with a phone. Software can make a very big difference in sound quality. I usually use PowerAmp. I'm sure that PowerAmp combined with the headphones listed in my sig will be just fine on the N5. Now if they would just ship the damn thing.

No he came from a phone with Beats Audio out of the box.
Complaining about the sound quality of the N5 compared to the One S is like claiming that Sennheiser studio headphones are **** compared to Monster Beats studio headphones.
The N5 has stellar sound quality. What it sounds like without any equalizer presets activated is what your music is SUPPOSED to sound like. Want it to sound like your One S? Choose the bass booster equalizer preset and there you go.

Qualcomm DACs while not quite as good as Wolfsons are still great. I haven't had a real chance to listen to audio on my N5, but the audio on my GS4 was excellent.

Install an equalizer and adjust to taste. Like many have said before it's because the HTC one has built in "Beats" Equalizer which changes audio settings and frequencies.

This isn't true at all. The sound engineers have no idea what kind of DAC you'll be using, or what kind of speakers/headphones you'll be using. All DAC's have different sound signatures. All headphones/speakers have different sound signatures. They mix it to sound the way they want it based on the equipment they have in the studio. Unless you're using the same equipment then you're never going to hear it the way it was SUPPOSED to sound. Some EQ will almost always be required to approximate the intended sound.
Beats audio does tend to over emphasize the bass. However to say a flat eq is the way it is supposed to sound is not accurate since every device is going to have a different flat sound, as are every different type of headphone. Decent headphones along with decent software and a decent DAC will give sound quality that will satisfy most. I have no reason to believe that the N5 will fall short.

No phone on the market right now can touch the stereo speaker on the One. Also, the One actually have a built in amplifier too.

No, they mix it the way they want it to sound on various equipment. Checking how it sounds on various devices is part of the mixing and mastering. So no EQ is needed, in fact it will ruin the sound most of the time.
Hey guys, I didn't seem to find any information about the speakers in the review section of the forum. I know OnePlus has been using the same single downward firing speaker with their phones since they began, and just want some opinions and insight as to how good they are. I know they can be easily muted with your hand, but are they at least loud and clear? REALLY considering the upcoming 6t, but just want to know if the speakers are at least good enough. Thanks!
Speaker is weak.. Really weak. Root + ViPER4Android makes it somewhat better.. But yeah you can't fix bad hardware with software.

That...... Bums me out. I REALLY hope the 6t has either a better speaker or a stereo pair, that'd really be nice! But shoot, weak as in tinny? Or weak as in just not loud enough?

Not that loud and really rubbish sound =p but then again, the only speakers I liked are the stereo speakers I don't really use it that much so doesn't bother me really.

Well shoot, I'm coming from a Motorola Nexus 6. I'll be leaving behind a QHD display and stereo front facing speakers for this device. I decided OnePlus because I definitely want a device with a great dev scene, but these trade offs man! Lol
The op6 speaker is better than any Samsung single speaker. For single speakers it's not that bad. I can hear it in my pocket.
I'm gonna agree with Gizmoe, I think it's actually quite good. Last few devices were Sony Z3 (dual speaker/ stereo), Moto z3 (dual speaker/ stereo) Nexus 6p (dual speaker/ stereo) LG g6, Samsung S8+ , and now OP6...for a single speaker it sounds pretty damn good. Also there are stereo mods for OP6 as well as Viper for even better sound.
It's easily my favorite device.
Speqker is pretty good... Can't say its worst or bad. But defienetly gives crystal clear sound while listening to video or youtube.

Alrighty! Yeah I'm not expecting anything amazing, but just so long as it sounds okay I'm good! Yeah ditching stereo speakers and QHD is hard for me, though I checked out my buddy's 5T the other day and remember thinking "that screen is 1080? It looks GREAT!" But then I covered his speaker with my thumb and well......... LOL But just hoping it sounds at least okay, I'm gonna take the dive and go for the 6T this time. I really hope there's a red color option on launch! The red 6 looks soooooo awesome to me!

I was kind of spoiled coming from a Motorola x pure edition with 2 stereo front-firing speakers. They sounded loud and high quality with minimal distortion. The op6 doesn't hold a candle but I would say it is serviceable.

That's because on the S9 they started using the bottom speaker and the earpiece speaker. It's not just one speaker.

Considering it's a single speaker it's pretty decent, im easily able to speak on calls on the speakerphone which always has been my benchmark for how loud and clear a speaker is on a phone. The position of the speaker is crap, very easily mutable specially while playing games but if flop the phone where notch if your right side, that issue can be overcome.

I didn't even consider gaming. Wow, that's something to think about! Well I'm going to watch the launch event tomorrow and decide, but it's a tough one. Coming from a Nexus device to a OnePlus? I'm leaning towards it because Nexus is no more and the new pixel phone??? I considered it, but for something I've going to look at several times a day for a few years or more, that notch is atrocious! Just insulting really.
Notch on Pixel 3 is super ugly and not to forget only 4 GB of Ram which means reloads (already notched by reviewers). For OP6T, it should have onscreen fingerprint scanner which may be the new technology but I can bet it won't be as fast as conventional fingerprints - that makes it a fail for me. Only thing to envy for OP6 users should be the teardrop notch. Gluck with decision making
The 6T will have stereo bottom firing speakers. Where the Jack was is replaced by a speaker. The fingerprint reader is going to be slower though and isn't always on. Making the experience slower than on the 5, 5t and 6. It's the reason I didn't wait and bought a 6 just a week ago. I figured the first to market with this would be more gimmicky than functional.
