Can anyone tell me if this would work? Hypothetically, I have a family plan with 3 lines. Line A, Line B and Line C.
Line A and Line C are eligible for an upgrade. Could I upgrade both to iPhone 4? That would cost either $424 - $636 depending if I decide 16GB or 32GB version. I would also have a data plan added for Line C (Line A already has unlimited). SO that is $15 per month.
Now could I just move the iPhone sim from Line C to a non-smartphone and would the data plan be canceled. And then after sell both iPhones for $1400-$1600. and continue to use the smartphone I previously had on Line A and continue to use a non-smartphone on Line C.
Would this work or would I be hit with any fees. Is this feasible?
Thanks,
~Mo
P.S. So far it seems I should be able to do this only problem I encountered is will I lose my Unlimited Data plan on Line A or will it be grandfathered in because it wasn't working online, it will work in a retail store correct?
Also, if this works what is a good price that I can quickly sell an iPhone 4 on ebay for? Are my prices accurate?
Nope. Part of the new ETF on AT&T is that you must keep the phone and data plan, they do this specifically to prevent people from doing exactly what you are trying to do.
Sent from my Incredible using Tapatalk
there is no possible way? is the ETF $300? I prefer to buy the Samsung Galaxy-S I9000 instead of the Captivate but can't justify paying that much extra unless I make the money doing something like this?
Some people I have asked said it will work as long as I don't cancel service and keep data plan for 30 days.
Purchased my upgrade through wirefly.com online (not via phone).
-upgraded 1 of my family lines (selected Keep existing service plan)
-came from an iphone 3gs w/ Unlimited Data
8/27
-sent me my new captivate
-meanwhile, received a text message on my current iphone that my "new service has been activated"
-data was not inactive on my iphone
-called at&t--they said IMEI #'s was switched to the new Samsung, WTF?!--i don't even have the phone yet.
-ALSO THEY SWITCHED ME TO the 2GB Capped Data plan!!!
-At&t switched my IMEI # back to my current iphone, and switched me back to my existing unlimited Data
8/30
-received new text message that my "new service is active"
-data no worky
-called Wirefly this time--no use--says my iphone didn't have a data plan existing and could not retain existing service plan
-I HATE CALLING INDIA and talking to "Robert from India"
-re-called AT&T; switched back to iphone IMEI and switched back to my unlimited plan
Bottom line: I do not like Wirefly right now... At&t said that if i received and activated my new phone and that wirefly switched me to a capped plan, that i could have stayed with a capped plan, and i would not be able to switch back.
Plus: Wirefly states that if i call AT&T directly, i violate the Terms and Conditions and am subject to pay for the remainder of the phone ~$300. WTF?!
I had looked into both Wirefly and AmazonWireless. Apparently I would have to switch to the limited data plan if I purchase through them. Moreover, if you have one of the old voice plan that might give you a better deal, you will lost that too and have to select from one of the currently available plans. At the end, I decided to get my Captivate from AT&T. The price at those websites for existing line upgrade is not that much cheaper than AT&T.
Same thing here..call up AT&T and ask them to flip you back...they'll push a little but they'll give it back to you ultimatly

Had to return 1st phone thru att b/c of random shutdowns...
that price was $199+tax which was ~ $216.xx
Wirefly w/ free shipping and no tax was $119.99
Approx. $100 savings, that is the primary driver... however w/ headaches and such, maybe $100 isn't so bad.
also, you have to keep in mind although wirefly is a 30 day return policy, you really have 14 days to request an RMA #.
Ah..Mine was through letstalk.com. They flipped my plan to 2gb. I got the phone and called up AT&T and said that I thought my plan was being grandfathered in and AT&T said 'ok but just this time'. I torched my phone where I couldnt even get it to boot...power did nothing so I rma'd it after about 20 days and they sent me a new one...with the damn 2gb plan again. I called AT&T again and said I shouldnt be dropped from my grandfathered plan cos my phone broke so they got a manager to set me back to the $30 unlimited plan from my iphone again. If you are nice and all 'yes maam/sir' and 'no maam/sir' they should play nice...get the phone and just let them know you wanted to stick with the grandfathered plan. So ge thte phone and plan wiht the 2gb and call at&t and tell em you dont want it...worth a shot at least
Hey guys,
I'm on ATT, and I was thinking about picking up an SGS2 soon. I was wondering, since my folks never use their upgrades (in a family account of 4), is it possible to upgrade their line, but never use the new sim card and instead use the phone for myself? Has anyone tried this that could possibly share their experience, and give a quick how-to?
Thanks.
If you go into the att store and just say you want to use their upgrade on your line they will do it no problem. As long as you are the primary account holder.
If you are doing it third party, or online you can upgrade their line with the new phone (activate required data plan if applicable) then put your sim card in the phone. You can deactivate the data plan on the other line whenever you want. You will need to call att to have them change your data from 3G to Faux G, but you will keep the same plan (cost and limit, even unlimited), it you won't get data on the GS II with the "3G" data provision.
I just went through this recently.
P.S. Do yourself a favor and get the original Galaxy S II (i777) instead of the skyrocket ... you'll thank me later.

I believe number is attached to sim. Just pop your sim in and good to go. Just ask ATT, its not illegal to switch phones

Thanks so much! And I was definitely going for the i777; dev support is flourishing there.

I'm not sure what you mean here. So when I put MY sim into the SGS 2, I should call att about my line, and have them change whatever you said?
I have an unlimited data plan - I was planning on just taking the newly bought SGS2 to the ATT store and have them transfer my unlimited plan to it. Would this work? What other options do I have to keep my unlimited plan?
Yeah they can do it in store, or call. Just tell them you got a sgs II and the data doesn't work, because it won't. They have to "provision" your line for 4G/HSPA+ data instead of 3G. You can still keep unlimited for $30. It shows up on your bill differently, you will see two pro-rated data plans with different names, but it will still total $30.
It will be easiest in store, as you can verify it works before you leave, but the phone reps can do it too.

Just tell them you want to cross-upgrade. They will set it all up for you. If you do it from a retailer (Costco, Bestbuy...), they will set up the upgraded line and then you will call AT&T after to cancel the data plan associated with the upgrade and switch the IMEI to your line - since they need to change the data plan to the 4g variant.
When you put your current sim in the SGSII, network will work but data won't. That's because the data plan on the Captivate isn't compatible with the SGSII. I found that out last week
Careful though as some places like Amazon require you to sign a contract with them as well stating that if you cancel any part of the plan or use the phone on another line, they hit you with early term fees (I think it's just Amazon actually).
Oh yeah, and the SGSII is an awesome phone!

Yeah I figure Amazon and Wirefly are off limits for this. They require the line to stay with the data plan for 3-6 months, depending on the retailer.
Thanks for your help!
Grea thread ! Some more explanation..please
Ok. I am not fully understanding this great switcheroo.
Wont you still have the other non-SGSII still active and paying for it in the family plan.
Can someone please explain how this goes step-by-step? I mean what if I am not yet eligible for an upgrade, can I just add a SGSII line this way, and turn off the other phone>>>??
Step-by-step.......puhlesaseeeeee!
EDIT: Hmmmmmmmmmm......after re-reading it looks it means you have to be eligible for an upgrade to do this? So since I do not have an upgrade option I am just getting excited for nothing ????
You can add a line for a new phone, such as SGS II, and then use that phone for your line. But, you cannot cancel your existing line until the contract ends, which would be ~3 months after you are eligible for an upgrade. You can cancel the dataplan you are forced to add if you add another line, but you are stuck paying $9.99 + taxes and fees, a month for that line for 24 months. So it adds up costing $250+ over the next 2 years.
You can call and try to talk your way into a early upgrade. If you are nice, and mention considering ending your service they may let you upgrade early for new price plus $30. Several others have said that worked for them. But, it may depend on how close you are to an upgrade. If you got a new phone 6 months ago you may be stuck for a while.

I did this with an iPhone 4S (my upgrade's not up until this spring, the contract outlasted my patience with the Samsuck Craptivate). If you go to a CORPORATE AT&T store, it's no big deal to do. The lady there handled the whole thing for me and I was up and running in no time...
Alright, so I went ahead and got the SGS 2 from Radioshack because they had a 50 dollar deal for Black Friday. I looked at the receipt though, and it says that "If the Device and its wireless service agreement are not continuously in service for 90 days after the original purchase date and the Device is not returned to the Retailer, I agree that the Retailer may charge my credit card an unreturned merchandise fee equal to the Device's Non Activated Price minus the activated price I paid".
I bought it with no sim card for my mom's line. I have the primary line, and I was wondering if it's still okay for my to just insert my sim in the phone to use (would I be charged the above stated fee?). The phone hasn't had any sim card put it in yet at all. Is there any way to get around this? Does anyone have any experience with upgrading like this through Radioshack?
EDIT: Just talked to an ATT rep and he told me that I would not incur any fees/charges for switching equipment, and proceeded to do so for me. I'm still sort of anxious though, don't want to be charged a ridiculous amount for doing this. I saved the chat as a PDF (talked to an online rep) just in case. Anyone want to chime in with an opinion of what I should do?

They are just trying to prevent you from using your upgrade to get a new phone, then immediately terminating the contract and selling the phone. As long as you are actually using it on your plan, you're all good.

Careful, some stores (Amazon) will charge you an early term fee if you move the phone to another line within 6 months.
Hey guys,
SO, here is my story. I had a SGS3, but the screen cracked, so I decided to use the money from the rebate to try out an iphone 5. I am unhappy with my iphone after using it for about a year and I would like to change phone asap. I am currently a verizon user and have time left on my contract. I would like to change carriers to straight talk so that I am no longer locked into a contract. I know that T-mobile is offering to pay of ETF's if you switch to their service, so I was planning to try the following. I understand this may not be the most morally right thing to do but it would make me the happiest and save the most money.
1. Switch my number over to an old flip phone (t-mobile requires you to turn in your current phone for market value and buy one of their phones, in order to pay of the ETF)
2. Sell my used iPhone 5 on Swappa (would generate more $ than the $200 t-mobile is offering for it)
3. trade in my old flip phone and have t-mobile pay off ETF of verizon, purchase a t-mobile phone of any value.
4. Sign up for 1 month of a t-mobile plan (as required by the current promo offer to pay off the ETF).
5. Sell the t-mobile phone, unopened, at the price I bought it for, and purchase an unlocked nexus 5 from swappa (using $ from iPhone 5 sale).
6. Sign up for straight talks $45/month plan under AT&T service (I do not get good service from t-mobile or this would not be an issue).
7. pay for 1 month on t-mobile service then cancel t-mobile and only pay for straight talk.
Overall, depending on the sale and purchase price of the phones, i hope that this transaction would only cost me <$100.
iPhone 5 Sale - ~~$400
t-mobile phone - buy and sell for same price
Nexus 5 on swappa - [~~$350 - $400]
pay for one month of unused t-mobile plan - [$30] (cheapest plan available).
Begin straight talk - sim card [$10]
Total - ~~$40
Does this plan seem to make sense? If not does anyone know what I could possibly due to avoid paying $200 in ETF from verizon but still switch to straight talk under AT&T service and get a Nexus 5 instead of an iphone 5?? Thanks!

The question is if people who bought the phone in full can just return the phone and get this offer. Because it doesn't make sense to leave a free phone on the table.

That's true a new line is a must. Since my wife doesn't care about her number, we got her a new line and will cancel her old one. I called and confirmed this and the new phone is on the way.

Just got the BOGO offer. Dialed 611, told them I wanted to add a line. From there, once I was connected with Sales, I told them I preordered a S7 Edge (I already have it, but I didn't mention that--even though it's pretty obvious since I'm a new customer and wouldn't be able to dial 611 from my old phone lol) and wanted to preorder another one so that I can do the BOGO offer. CSR didn't know about the offer yet, so he asked supervisor. As long as you order it before your order is completed (so before launch I'm guessing?), you are eligible for the BOGO. Paid about $460, have my order already being processed and almost ready to ship.
Once you get it you have to apply for the rebate I guess and you get the card with all the money for the device on it... Still charged monthly for it.. Only thing I wish is that device is just waived from bill. I guess you can still do that by using the card to directly pay off the EIP though..
TLDR; everyone here that has the phone or preorder it can still take advantage of this offer.
Great deal, came at a time where I was actually going to buy another phone for my boyfriend anyways, so I'm pretty stoked I got it for free lol.
Edit: The promocode doesn't work yet. But you have 30 days to submit the offer anyways.

Did the same thing and they didn't even care if I had the S7 Edge already and I told them that I would cancel my other line and they said as long as you add a line that's all they care about. So there ya go.
Wonder if i can do this and still get the VR headset and netflix.
As long as you regester device before the end date for that. This doesn't affect the pre-order bonus.

Cool. will do
Thinking about getting my brother a phone to replace his LG G3 with this. Anyone see a reason the below scenario won't work?
I was going to pickup an S7 tomorrow in store and add a new line in order to get the BOGO from my S7 Edge. After activating it, take the SIM out and put his in it. Although we'll initially have to pay $10 + EIP for the S7, once the reimbursement card comes in the mail, I'd pay off the EIP and the phone would be owned outright. I'd then cancel the new line and get the $10 off my account. The only hitch I see is that cancelling the line makes the full balance due on the phone, but it would be paid off in full, so that wouldn't affect anything.
Am I missing anything obvious?

I think you'd have to keep the line, and you're correct about the full balance when cancelling the line. Also keep in mind, that this wipes out the Jump on Demand if you're on it. The guy at the store told me that they're trying to get rid of the JOD anyways. So, technically you'd have to keep the phone for 24 months.
Man I bought mine outright... I am dissapointed right now. Now I have to jump through hoops just to get one free... I hope they can make exceptions for people.

The fine print I read does mention the full balance coming due if cancelled, but that would be $0 if paid off using the card. Unless it's like a cable TV agreement when you receive the $400 card and is essentially a 2 year agreement to keep the device active.

Worst case, return the phone and immediately re-buy it on EIP. Wait a week and pay off the balance.
jump through hoops. such a pain and i gave to do it and wait a few weeks potentially

T-Mobile doesn't technically do 24 month contracts anymore. As long as you pay off your EIP for the phone, you are good to close the line. I would keep the line open for 2-3 months to be safe so the rebate can be fully processed.
