When I first started getting messages I was disappointed because these functions were missing from the pop-up notification. It basically just a short preview of the text and no way to reply or mark as read. Then I got the day 1 update and it fixed that. I love having this feature but now it is gone again! I don't think it's a setting in the messages app because it does the same thing for Line messenger too! Please help!
If you go into your settings and go to display and then to edge screen and turn off edge lighting and then it will come back.

That did it! Thanks! I kept the edge lighting on only when the phone is off now.
I am having a related issue where the options to mark as read or reply are available on some messages and not others? Any idea why?

is there anyway to make it popup and automatically turn on the screen like handcent? Handcent misses alot of text and this app works better but doesnt actually turn the screen on with the pop up.

Sure, it has, go to "Preferences"--"Notification Settings"--"Popup Windows Settings", enable "Unlock screen"
will you be adding led notifications to go sms anytime soon?
I use the app "No Lock" so that I have no Lock Screen (time wasting and useless).
my problem is that my screen does not light up when I get an SMS when lock screen is off. if I switch lockscreen back on it works.
Any idea for a workaround?

I have the same question. Thanks
love the app
I love the app. I've tried both handcent and chomp and they send my msgs multiple times to my contacts and this doesn't! Thanks. Hope it continues to be do so well.
My only problem is that I cannot get the contact pics to work.

Thanks so much for the great app.
Ok guys please post all questions in the thread that they concern
Is there any way to get text message previews to appear on the lockscreen on an Edge? This is one feature that I miss from my Galaxy Note 2.
Also what does the Edge screen text preview setting in the Notifications section of the Messaging app actually do as I have it on but can't see any difference?

It puts a preview of incoming text messages on the Edge screen.

A preview in what way? Is it the notification that briefly appears that shows the message?

It does the same thing as the status bar.
When a message comes in mines pop up in orange and then says the phone who sent it and it displays the message.
IF the message is long it will flash multiple lines then disappear.
I do wish we could change the time out time since it disappears very fast.
Wonder if anyone knows how to make the edge screen wake up when a notification or message is received?
I hear a sound but the screen doesn't wake.

That would be cool too. We need some devs to get this device or all take a crash course

There's an app in the Play Store called Screen Notifications that works. It lights the whole screen though, unless you have the Samsung flip cover, then it only lights the edge screen.
Facebook notifications work however Messenger doesn't? Seems rather odd, anyone managed to get around it?
Is fb messenger set as the default messaging app?
Edge lighting has a list of apps you can enable but Messenger is not in there. Facebook app is in the list but Messenger isn't for some reason. I'm wondering if it's Samsung or Messenger developers who have to tweak something for Messenger to be in that list and have Edge lighting working.

Quick menu > Second page > Edge Lighting icon
Long-press it and there will be a list of apps there.
I have enabled it for all apps and so far it worked one time out of two with Textra, for some reason. All good for the 3 Snapchat notifications I received since I have the phone. Didn't have other notifications to test yet.

This worked for me....
After looking this up more I found someone had tried this
Settings > Display > scroll all the way to bottom Keep Screen Turned Off make sure that is off
I did this and it now works for messages all the time but varies for what's app.

It doesn't seem to work when the screen is off for Hangouts either. (Although I think I saw it working when the screen was on.)
Seems that I can only get it to work for my messages only. All else fails...
I got it working. See this post: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=72027923&postcount=14

Any alternatives?

Same for me, but at least we found why edge lighting was not working, it's a good start. To have the actual app notification message instead of the Light Flow icon, I think the app needs to support natively "wake up screen" for notifications.
I don't know if the Light Flow developers would be able to pass the notification informations (variables?) from the app to Lighting Edge but maybe it'd be a good idea to give them a hint about it. I did send an email earlier today to Messenger developers about it but I doubt they'll receive it or open it, let alone actually do something about it.. but I tried.
I really like the Edge Lighting concept and I hope Samsung will keep developing it and one day soon we'll be able to choose the lighting colors for each app, because right now it's blue, no matter what app.
Got it to work, Kinda!

The full fledged facebook messenger app didn't work for me, so I tried the messenger lite version, and much to my surprise, the pill notifications with edge lighting now work when I receive facebook messages!
The main downside is that quick reply in-line in the notification card is not supported in facebook messenger lite, although I think i can make due without this, because when I used direct reply, the notification badge would never go away until i long-pressed the app and manually cleared it (even if I opened the app and viewed the "unread" message).
Hope this helps! I have managed to get most of my apps working with edge notifications with playing around. Sometimes I have had to go into specific apps notification settings and play around with toggles and they started working all of the sudden. The last one I'm trying to get to work is the stock email app, but it seems like there's a fundamental flaw because even with edge lighting off, no notification card pops down when I receive an email. May switch to gmail again, but I was also reading that people were having trouble with notification cards on that app as well.
I cannot post a URL to the facebook messenger lite app on apk mirror, but if you go to that site and search for the app, just download the most recent version: Version: 7.0.0.9.280 (57368212)
I've just across this thread after trying to get FB messenger to work, like others have already said the edge lighting is a bit random. I have the default messenger app working when screen is on or off, Whatsapp only when screen is on and FB messenger just not at all.
I used to use lightflow before to customise my notification light, didn't want to go down the router of installing it to fix something that should just work.
recently I find out that the calling screen of OTT applications which have calling feature such as facebook messenger, viber... will be overridden by edge lighting screen (only when screen is off) if you enable edge lighting for these apps, because of that facebook tell samsung to remove their messenger app out of list apps that support edge lighting
enable edge lighting when screen off for viber then use another phone to make a viber call to your S8, you will see what I am trying to say
Edge lighting seems useless. I mainly wanted to use it for Facebook Messenger and pretty much every app is in the list except that. I also enabled it for Gmail and Messages but have never actually seen it work.
Hello. I've got solution. This app translates old style notifications to new style notifications so all the apps have edge notifications enabled. You can customize color for any application and turn on/off edge notifications. Very good application, not like the others, which creates fakes color effects around display. It even works on AOD display, which is perfect. Ofc it has few bugs, like if you enable notification and scroll up than back, it shows like it didn't save your settings, but it did. Just set all your apps, turn off app and on and you can see, that it remembered all your settings. I've reported that bug, so I hope it get fixed. play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.movisoft.edgelighting&rdid=com.movisoft.edgelighting

I can get it to work on my text app, but not Facebook. How did you get it to work on Facebook? I heard that it won't work on Messenger.
So I can't find an answer to this....
When I first got my S8+ from Verizon I was able to see a preview of text message while using the phone. Updated phone a day ago and now I can't seem to find an option to allow preview.
Any ideas?

Thanks for the tip but I meant in terms of actual preview of the text contents.
For example: When I first got my phone and my wife text me "On the way." I would get a banner on top of the screen showing a text from her with the sentence as well.
Now I get "New Message" and I have to open it to see what the message said. I have it blocked on lock screen which I have changed to show just in case that was the issue and it didn't fix it

EDIT: Saw your update.
It's in the actual Messages app prefs. Tap Notification and then turn on Preview message.

I've recently started using Android Messages as a solution for SMS/MMS.
I've noticed that, despite selecting Android Messages to work with my Edge Lighting, the lighting doesn't work when I get SMS notifications.
I've made sure that Android Messages is the only SMS app set to work with Edge Lighting.
Anyone else have this issue?
Any tips or help?

Yes, I did.
I'm thinking about combing through the app permissions. I've got time to finally spend a few minutes doing that.
Any update on this? I'm having the same issues on my Verizon Note 9. I'd like to use Android Messages rather than stock Samsung, but can't get the message preview to show up on AOD display while using Android Messages. I get the edge notification when the screen is on.

No update here. I've given up on it. I've just grown used to not getting the edge lighting when I'm using Android Messages for my SMS/MMS.
Go to notifications > Your custom message app > *this dialog will be different (for example I use Pulse SMS) but go to "Default Conversation Notification" and set the importance to "Urgent". That's how I got edge lighting notifications to work. There was a new update to take care of this bug AFAIK but this is how I got it to work.
