MOTO X has a worse camera than ONE S

Since most of us chose the ONE S for the good performance in a smaller form factor, I figured the Moto X would be a natural upgrade from the ONE S (rather than the ONE Mini, which is not much of an upgrade, with its 4.3" screen and 1GB RAM). I was right - the Moto X is great for one-handed operation and is superior in every way except one: the camera.
Even with the negative press about the camera, this is surprising, because you expect technology to march on. What I didn't expect was how much better the HTC camera in the "obsolete" ONE S is versus Motorola's.
This is mostly evident in low-light shooting, such as indoors. The HTC is much better at capturing detail, and usually exposes correctly. The Motorola introduces washed-out colours and grain, even after the so-called "update" that was supposed to fix these issues.
The pluses of the Moto X are many: better reception and call quality, better loudspeaker, LTE, bigger screen with 720p, nicer curved design that sits naturally in your hand, and updated software (though if you flash a ROM the last one doesn't matter).
Not that the ONE S is bad in any of these areas (it's not), but Motorola is known for its radios and call quality, and they continue that tradition.
The ONE S is still a great phone and I was planning on keeping it for another few months at least, but there was a recent price drop for the Moto X. Because I use my phone for emails and browsing first, as a phone second, and as a camera a distant third, this is still an upgrade for me. I am disappointed that Motorola/Google dropped the ball with the camera though.
If you use the camera often, keep the ONE S!

One S rulez !

If you spend time to read reviews before you buy, you'll know the camera on Moto X isn't that great. Most folks on Earth tend to think HTC camera bad which is very wrong, HTC camera isn't perfect but always give you surprised result.
One S camera is equipped with 8M 1/3.2" BSI, f/2.0, 28mm and most importantly an imagechip. The spec. is still at top-tier after two years from now, don't think Moto X could beat it easy. I want to upgrade my phone but most mid-end phone nowadays their camera is still behind One S but flagship model is just too expensive to me which made me continue to stick with One S, might be one more year til 2015. Very bad.
I'll look for M8 mini and Galaxy S5 mini later.

I did read the reviews, but thought the bar had been raised across the board since 18 months separates the release of the phones. This may be true for some manufacturers, but not others. Plus, a recent software update claimed to improve the camera, but evidently not enough. Hopefully a further update will improve things, but I'm not holding my breath.

The main problem on Moto X is no dedicated ISP(imagechip) and it can't be improved simply though some software updates. The ISP performance inside Qualcomm CPU is always very poor.

Would the Moto X Pure be a real upgrade compared to the Idol 3 5.5?

I still like my Idol 3, even though it lags a bit since a little while. I'm rooted (using stock firmware) and started using Greenify, so I'll see if it's better with many apps "greenified".
But I'm tempted by the Moto X Pure (or Style, it's the same). The 3GB RAM (vs 2 GB for the Idol 3) and a better processor must make it quite faster than the Idol 3. And the camera is supposed to be better as well. I'm afraid the battery is worse than the Idol 3 from what I read though. I'm in Canada and the X Pure is a bit of a pain to buy because Motorola decided to only release the inferior X Play (only great thing vs the Pure seems the killer battery) here only...
What do you guys think?

Well, I'm sure Moto is better, but so it also should be, because at least here in Finland Moto is almost twice as expensive than Alcatel (Moto ~500€, Alcatel 280€)

It is a good phone,but did you think about the Nexus phones as well?
But I suggest you wait until we get MM,then try to think about it all.

Yeah,that is a flaw of a certain kind.
But,the 5x and 6p are still Nexii,theyhave fingerprint readers,minimalistic design,decent cameras and good SOCs.
As for lack of storage,one can always use cloud storage or have a 32GB hybrid USB(normal USB on one side,and micro USB/USB type C on the other side) in the pocket.
I have the 6045K which has no sd card slot. When you want something,you can always find a way!
Also,I dislike the body language of the Moto phones(the fat-in-the-middle design).
A phone these days has to feel good in hand and look good as well.

32GB is not enough for me. I just got the new SanDisk 200GB.... I need front-facing stereo speakers and microSD slot. Too bad Nexus doesn't qualify...

Ofcourse it is. UI is smooth. MXP is fast and just better than idol 3. Even more noticeable now when I grab my wife's Idol 3 - which feels like junk (UI microlags everywhere and overall just slow). Sorry, but it's the truth. Idol 3 rear flashlight is brighter though! And I do miss the full screen rotation. That's it.

I like also the moto x pure/style. But when i would be you i would wait untill the new MOTO X 2016 is released, because then the old models get discounted.
I like the camera on MOTO X Pure (at most the 720p 240fps slow motion)
And of course there is much much bigger comunity of moto x pure users.

In my humble opinion it depends on how you use your phone for.
Let's say, I would never upgrade to moto x pure cause the 808 on 2k screen is same as 615 on 1080p in 3d demanding tasks. Also the faster and more pixelated screen are more demanding on the battery consumption. Also with cm 12.1 custom roms like pac man or slim (big thanks to @The Marionette the idol 3 is on pair with much more expensive devices - my friend has huawei p9 that I'll never trade for Idol3).
The sound from speakers and headphones is similar, and you have viper4android if you want the next level of sound exp.
Camera is better in low light, you have flash on front, and some feature advantages but I'm satisfied for the most with idol.
The build quality is noticeable better, but idol is lighter and thinner.
So it really depends on your demands and needs. As the Marionette said above, storage is up to you, I know some dudes that live comfortably on iPhone 6s with 16gigs ! That's like 2009 times.. You'll always have the downs and ups for something.
This all said, it doesn't mean I wouldn't upgrade for note 5(even though i would switch positions for capacitive buttons) or 6p or some 820 SOC.
Try the moto and figure it for yourself would be the most appropriate for you.

No. 808/418 pushing quad is not the same as a 615/405 at 1080p. You constantly get 20-30fps @2k on intensive 3D on MXP vs 8-15 fps max on Idol 3 @1080P. 3D stuff is just smooth. It is not the same. 615/405 @ 1080p is *somewhat comparable to a 801/330 @2k (testing a g3 proved that even a 801 at 2k is slightly faster than a 615/405 @1080P). Battery is slightly less I get 4 SOT on stock (rooted+all goodies) but that is not even an issue with quickcharge. Phones charges to full in 35 mins. 15 mins I'm up almost 50%. Multitasking is just night and day on a MXP vs Idol 3. In a trip have Pandora running, Waze, BT, then try to do something else... Good luck.

I'm getting 30fps on custom rom with 5h sot so my experience is different, mainly cause of bad optimisation by Alcatel vs cm editions.

I had the Moto X pure. It is a really nice phone. The build quality is definitely better but it does cost twice as much so it should. Although the camera might be a little better I am very happy with the camera on the Idol 3. I really don't have anything bad to say about the Idol 3

True that typically a MXP it's 2 times as much but I've seen several deals for the 32GB version for $300 which is just $100 more for a way better phone. Here is one:

If only us Canadians had access to these offers
The Moto X Pure is not available in Canada by Motorola or any carriers, but there are unlocked 32GB models on Amazon.ca at around $625 CAN. Telus sold me my 16GB Idol 3 for $360 CAN. So here, the Pure is not double the price...

I just got a G4 today. It craps all over the idol......except for the battery. I barley got 2 hours SOT. What a joke.

I bought an Idol 3 4.7 in September 2015. I bought it because I wanted a lightweight and sleek phone; and, it was really light, weighing merely 110g. But it's performance let me down - the stock rom was really, really slow. Luckily, with pivoq's cm 12.1 rom, the phone got a new life. However, watching youtube and reading news was not enjoyable on such a tiny device. I am using the phone during my running because...
In Feb 2016, I did a lot of research and bought a MXS (Moto X Style). Contenders were Nexus 6P, Oneplus 2, LG G4 and Asus Zenfone2. MXS is still the best device in terms of value. Snapdragon 808 is nearly as good as 810. MXS has a microsd and has the best, loudest front facing speakers. The sound from headset is plain awesome - it will completely humiliate Idol3-5.5. MXS rom is nearly plain Android stock with some very nice additions such as chop-chop for flashlight and swirl action to launch camera. It also gets regular updates, but as not as fast as nexuses. I am sure I will get Android N within a month or so.
Compared with 6P, MXS has the same 5.7 inch screen but in smaller footprint and hence is very comfortable to hold. MXP's front facing speakers beats 6P hands down. MXP also has an SD card and most importantly MXP 32 GB is just €360 now, compared to 6P which is €650 now. In half the price, you'll get nearly the same features. It's true that 6P has a better low light camera and a fingerprint sensor, but I don't do too much of low shooting anyways and I have a smartwatch that keeps much device unlocked through trusted connections.
Other tow best value phones are Oneplus 3 and Zenfone 2. I hate Zenfone's software, hence will need rooting and CM13. It is also slower and bigger than MXS with a smaller screen. I was very confused between Oneplus 3, which is even cheaper, and MXS. Finally decided to take MXS due to stock android experience, better cameras and bigger screen.
I strongly recommend MXP over any phablet because of:
1. SD Card
2. Best screen to size ratio
3. Awesome front facing speakers
4. Amazing sound from headphones
5. Near stock Android rom, with regular updates, and very useful additions
6. Good simple and very functional camera app (no manual controls, btw)
7. Best Value (price to performance)
8. Front camera with flash
9. Good battery life, with marshmallow 6.0.1 update, the battery is superb
This was a short write-up of my experience with MXS over the last 3 months. I hope it helps people take a wise decision

But I started using Greenify a few days ago and since then, my Idol 3 5.5 is less laggy. Because of that, I'll probably hold on to it for a little while but I surely keep the Pure/Style in mind.

On the g4 that is terrible. This is my tipical day with basic optimization and 4 cores always active (factory kernel) I'm half day thru and SOT is more than 2 hours with bad LTE signal!. I always end up with 4 or 4:20 SOT. On an area with good LTE i hit 5 SOT. I can extend that to 5 (in a bad area) lowering cores and clock speed but I don't need it. Like I said, use your car charger for 15 mins and it goes up 50%.

Well, what leaked so far for the upcoming Moto X 2016 with the lack of stereo speakers left me quite cold...
There are some Moto X Style (same as the Pure Edition, but for Europe) on sale at expansys.ca for $440 CAN (or $349 US). It's said to be compatible with the major Canadian carriers for LTE and 3G. It's very tempting to upgrade my Idol 3 with this (my Idol is still sold $360 CAN over here)...

I was excited for the new Moto, but then the Moto Z was weak, no front facing speakers, and ugly finger print scanner on front, when it so obviously belongs on the back. I liked the ZTE Axon 7, but then it had the software issues and small, unmarked, unbacklit capacitive buttons. I was excited for the Pixel, but then it didnt have front facing speakers, has an uninspired deign with thick bezels and was priced absurdly expensively.
Is a stock android phone with front facing speakers too much to ask for? This phone looks great, even managed to shrink the already crazy thin bezels on the Moto X Pure. Look Moto, just give me the Moto X Pure again, with finger print scanner on back, Snapdragon 821, slightly better camera, and a decent battery life. I'll instantly buy it, even priced at $500.
That being said Motorola has already released a bunch of devices this year, and leak just looks like the Moto X pure with smaller bezels. I'd say it was fake if I had to guess. How would a new Moto X fit into their lineup? Would be a high end device? How would they market it differently than the Moto Z?

Agree with the above. I even ordered a OnePlus 3 on payg via O2 in UK. But then I had a good look at one in the shop and decided it was not an upgrade for the X Style. I cancelled the order. To be honest the X Style isn't all that bad and would consider a new model. So long as it had better battery life, a bright display like the current model and at least the 820.
Not convinced it's real but hope there is something in the pipeline. I'll happily stick with the current Moto x as nothing else really appeals at the moment.

Moto X Pure VS Pixel 2 XL

So I finally switched, after more than 2 years with the Moto X Pure. I had the Pixel 2 XL for about a week, here is my comparison.
Speed: No doubt the Pixel is far quicker, snappier, but anyone would have expected that.
Screen: I prefer the display of the Moto. Now you would think the size difference 6 vs 5.7 is huge, but when you play videos it seems like the width of the Moto gives you a bit more of the viewing experience. Theres is not a lot of difference with the quality of the display, the Pixel seemed to have a bit deeper blacks.
Camera: Pixels camera is just great, it almost consistently takes great pix. Love the night shots and the portrait mode. No comparison...
Speakers: I expected the Pixel speakers to be better, but after putting them side by side I found out that the Moto X Pure has speakers that are just a bit louder, just a tiny bit. Theres no audio quality difference
Build: Both phones are built well. Both feel heavy. The Moto X is thicker and the Pixel is lenghtier.
Forgot to mention the battery. The Pixel battery is amazing. I never had a phone last this long.
I think its a perfect upgrade.
Few things that would make the Pixel even better:
1. Additional wide angle lens like on the V30.
2. Minimize the height a bit
3. IP68
4. Chop chop for light

Don't forget about us here in the forums!
As long as you're happy with it, that's what matters. Personally, going from a reasonably attractive phone (like the Pure Edition) to a comparatively ugly phone with an Oled display (like the Pixel 2 XL) would be a bit of a letdown for me. However, if the advancements made in terms of camera and hardware performance are worth it to you, don't let that stand in the way of personal progress.

Since you mentioned the speakers. They were actually a big surprise for me, when I got the X-Style.. The main reason I bought the X-style, was that it was oddly cheap here, when considering some very decent stats.. The fact that it had stereo speakers was just a bonus.. But they are really good.
I was basically shocked the first time I put on the teaser trailer for Agony, and got a good blast of, surprisingly non-tinny, music in my face =)
Overall, with the P2-XL being about 4 times the price of the X-style, I would expect the P2-XL to be better.. But so far I have been very happy with my X-style.. The only thing I can think of, that would improve the X-style, would be an Amoled display.. Like the X-Force has.. But the X-force is an ugly block, with no developer community, So here I am on the X-style board

Be careful what you wish for. The Moto X Pure Edition has one of the best displays in the business. A dingy old oled panel would've been a dealbreaker for me. If you want a Pure Edition-like phone with Oled, the Droid Turbo (or possibly the Nexus 6) is it. All of this phone's successors (the Moto Z series) have Oled panels, as do most of its predecessors.

I found that like you that the sound wasnt as good but what i really noticed was the call and cell quality and strength were subpar to the MXPE. My XL is on its way back to google. I just couldnt justify the cost. Meanwhile my MXPE is still fine..

I just got my Pixel 2 XL a few days ago and I'm absolutely loving the Pixel. My Moto X Pure will still likely go down as my favorite device of all time due to it's specs, price, and performance. When it comes to the Pixel 2 XL, don't believe the hype on the screen issues. The screen is fantastic on the XL, the blue shift that people are complaining about is there, but it's waay over exaggerated. All oled screens have some sort of color shift. My buddy has the Samsung S8+ which is supposed to be one of the top rated screens on any phone and it has worse blue shift than the Pixel 2 XL along with an overall red tone to the screen. The curved glass is sooo cool and really makes using the phone a pleasure. I didn't realize how much I would enjoy the curved glass until owning the device. The big thing I was concerned about with going with the Pixel was the lack of an external SD slot, but I'm not really all that concerned about it now. I bought a really nice usb C adapter that holds a micro sd card in it and also has a usb A connection to hook up to a PC. When I do my Titanium/TWRP backups, I just click that in and do my backups. Nice and easy. The speakers on the XL sound pretty good, I notice little to no difference. They are phone speakers after all, but they are stereo, front firing and do their job. The signal strength on the Pixel is unmatched. I'm amazed at how strong the wifi and cell signals are compared to my MXP. The build of the phone is great, and feels like the dollar amount invested. The immediate updates are one of the biggest things I like along with firmware being posted almost immediately from Google. No more hunting down/capturing OTA's or full firmware zips. As much as I enjoyed Moto Display, the Pixels ambient display on 8.1 is top notch, has double tap to wake, and we get a notification light back (which I really missed while using the MXP).
Overall, I'm very happy with the Pixel 2 XL. Lenavo really ruined the MXP and it's unlikely I'll ever go back to them unless they go back to the way Motorola originally set up their phone's update schedules. Right now as I type this I'm wiping my MXP and setting it up as a dedicated music media player for my car to replace my current old LG-G3. My battery is still strong on the MXP and I expect to get several more years of service out of it.

Good find. I still use mine every day, so I embrace it instead of missing it. Moto X Pure Edition easily might just be the best smartphone of the decade. I still can't think of anything that can match its combination of screen, sound, features, and form-factor.

I still have mine, but my Razer Phone 1 is my daily driver. It's almost like a better Moto X Pure, minus the headphone jack... and a boxier design that can lay flat on a table without rocking.
Better, faster display. (And not OLED, so no burn in.)
Better CPU, RAM.
Front facing stereo speakers.
Larger battery.
Metal chassis, not fragile glass like modern flagships.

I considered the Razer Phone, but the screen can't hold a candle to the Pure Edition, and that seems to be the problem with just about everything I've researched. There are plenty of affordable device with good speakers that are gimped by screens ranging from crummy to only just OK (Razer Phone 2, HTC 10, HTC U11, HTC U12+, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, etc.) and just as many with great screens that are hampered by awful sound systems. Motorola figured out the formula over five years ago, so I'm not sure why still nobody is getting it right.
