just got my S8 youtube videos are not playing in 1440p there is only a 1080p option.. my s7 edge has 1440p option what gives?
I noticed the same thing. Likely the YouTube app has not be configured for the ratio of the S8. Or there is a limitation per the network (wifi vs lte).
I had to change my phones display settings to 1440p first.... by default it was on 1080p.... now the 1440p option is available for me.
Maybe it's just me but I can't tell the difference anyway.

Go here and tell me if you have 1440p?
https://youtu.be/Bey4XXJAqS8
Also if you have your power saving mode on or performance options set to have your screen at 1080p (to save battery) this can happen. There is an option that is supposed to bypass this for apps like YouTube to enable 1440p only in those apps but maybe there is a bug and it's not working.
Then make sure you don't have limit mobile HD usage on in the settings. Let us know what the results are.

1st of all i must say sorry if there is another post about this but, is there a way to improve youtube video quality on our XL?????
the best quality im getting on youtube is 360p... our phone can play 720p videos without problems or lags but youtube only gets up to 360p
my phone is full stock device and bootloader is locked
you need to have root access
2 ways to improve quality:
1- With a modded youtube app http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529715
cons: old version of youtube
pro: have many extra options like playing in background etc etc
2 - fake resolution: you can use xposed with "app settings" ,module to set the youtube app working with a higher resolution with lower dpi, this will enable 720p in the app

Hey I wanna know that Sony's doing the same thing like they did with Z5 Premium?
Like this is 1080p by default but only when you open in gallery and maybe amazon prime video app triggers the 4K?
I remember Erika Griffin mentioned that you can change the resolution but another YouTuber said it's 1080p by default.
Erica's video (Watch at 3m4s)
Mathew's video (Watch at 2m17s)
I think you can toggle it manually, pretty sure I've understood that and it only makes sense.
Not that you should want it to run in 4k all day but for vr or something and actual 4k content.

My understanding that the default to 1080P is a Android N default to save battery life, you can set it to 4K under display in system settings

You can change the resolution in the settings menu and if you choose 4K, all the contents will be shown in 4K, same thing with 1080P and 2K.

Are you sure these guys even checked? Kinda sucks if it doesn't. I mean its something that really isn't needed. I owned the z5 premium and had it emulate 4k all the time with a kernel and then in the end just went back to stock but it its also something reviewers would target as an issue
I hope there will be simple hack to enable such a feature. This will be needed for example when you want to watch VR video with cardboard using custom app, even if content will be 4k by default app will not enable it.
Yea you can enable it to 2K 4K with abd. I just wanted to see if Sony had implemented to change the display res under the settings, Guess they did NOT.

You can try this method when you get the phone.
Plus I saw it in a video that Sony mentioned that they may include an option to change the resolution in future update. I think they should but I would just use it in 2K once I get the device.
yes i knew this adb trick from the old sony xperia 4k Handy, i make it so bevor i sell it, but this was not a good option, the apps/players for the VR 360 movies working bad, to small on the Display........you would not happy with this Settings
then Sony make a new 4K Handy, and what? Same fuc....k
4K only works in Sony Photo App and Sony Videoplayer........but this can not play 360 or 180 Videos corretly with motion, only still.
Techradar says:
"You won’t find a sharper screen on another smartphone, and unlike its 4K-toting predecessor you actually get the full resolution all the time. The Z5 Premium would only deliver the full 4K experience when you were watching video of the same resolution, whereas on the new Xperia XZ Premium it’s 3840 x 2160 all the way – from the home screen and browser to the app store and your social media profiles."
I think it is a mistake from Techradar, but what do you think, can it be true?

You won't get higher resolution graphics in any game by changing the resolution to 4k. All you will do is zoom out really far making things really hard to see and the ui will be tiny. It would only be worth it in games that use proper scaling and there aren't many aaa games on Android that might do it. Buy a 4k phone for videos and photos. Don't expect people to quadruple their graphics production workload for such a niche gaming market.

if you check mods section of the XZ Premium forum, you will find a ''trick'' (by ADB) to change the resolution to native 4K, with this method everything will be displayed in native 4K resolution (really appreciate this mod), hope I helped !
OK, now I feel like a newb but this is my first Pixel device and the Google camera seems simple enough but I can't find how to set my video framerate to 1080p 60fps. I have it on 1080p and the only options I can find are on the top bar with color temp and flash and all it gives me is Auto and 30fps. Auto seems to go anywhere between 120 and 30 fps, I can't figure out the logic behind how it chooses. I really just want to lock it to 60fps for 1080p. Can someone help me out?

I turned off IS and am still not seeing it, I tried 720p too and nothing but auto and 30fps. Open Camera and Filmic both give me 60fps.
I'm thinking anything over 30 fps is "slow motion" only. Still looking around myself b/c I'd love the 240 fps for videoing my golf swing

The Pixel 2 camera has 240 in slow motion.
Sent from my [device_name] using XDA-Developers Legacy app
Woah. This is a near deal breaker here. I can't seem to find 60fps on my $850 phone.
Update I found the place where you set the framerate, but unlike the Pixel 2 (which shows 30 and 60), the Pixel 3 only shows Auto or 30. W. T. F. This "auto" icon is located in the lower left when in video mode.
For what it's worth, I've gotten near the proper framerate with 3rd party apps. Both Open Camera (free) and Filmic Pro (paid) hit 59.667 on 60fps mode. The proper framerate is 59.94 (60,000/1001). Filmic Pro can do an exact even 60fps too if you force the framerate. I may try to gen some answers from Google directly if I don't figure this out over the weekend.

I tried open Camera, and it looks like 30fps when I force 60fps. It just says about 30.095, Min 22.222 and max 43.103 in Media Info. This is fail.

Was wondering the same thing. Selecting info on a recorded video doesn't show framerate either.

Automatic FPS Switching
First, a new option to automatically switch FPS during video recording has been added. According to a Product Manager that we spoke to at the event, people have trouble deciding what the best framerate is before recording a video. This new feature lets the Google Camera app decide what framerate to record at – either 30 or 60 fps – depending on what’s on screen. The feature can even switch framerates in the middle of a recording. It doesn’t work with 4K videos, though.

Hold the phone horizontal and select video mode. On the lower left corner you will see a little icon "A". Touch this icon and you will see "Auto" or "30fps".

Great, so 30fps is working as intended on an $850 phone. Thanks for finding this gem. Glad I don't have to wait 6 months to a year for this quote from Google to find out it essentially will never be fixed. Hopefully they don't regress on the Pixel 2, because this isn't a improvement in my book. How about Auto, 24, 30, 50, 60 option on an $850 phone?
This is not acceptable.
I want to be able to lock it to 60fps, not to leave Google device the frame rate for me.
Guys, we need to send feedbacks via the Camera app and try to involve the media (@madebygoogle on Twitter).
That's the only thing we can do to hope they'll release an update enabling 60fps selection.

I just confirmed on their support chat that there is no option for 60fps, like we didn't already figure that out. They suggested going to 'settings -> about phone -> send feedback about this device' and sending feedback that way. I am already posting what I can on social media as well. Wish we could get this in the front page of xda.
I just used Open Cam set to 60fps and the Google Cam on auto to record the same scene and I must admit that they look identical. I cannot see the difference with my naked eye.

This is exactly my observation. Which means, this could be a limit of the new hardware and/or part of the Visual Core stuff which might be a harder thing to fix. We shall see how Google responds.
I think it will be "working as intended" or the hardware is limited to auto, because (insert some sort of white wash excuse). I would prefer darker video of 60 fps over brighter 30fps variable frame rate hogwash.
So today at my son's baseball game I used open Cam locked in at 60fps and goggle at 1080 auto and the open Cam video looks choppy and looks like it skipped frames. The Google Cam video looks very smooth like 60fps does. So I'm gonna say that Google Cam does a dang good job of chosing the best fps.
Video recording is an afterthought on the Pixel series. Stabilization is top tier, but everything else (image quality, audio quality, etc) takes a back seat. I'm actually not upset since I rarely ever record videos, and when I do, they are short clips at home that have ZERO production value. I'd be willing to be 95% of consumers are the same way.
Heck, have you noticed how every amateur video that goes viral on the news is shot in portrait mode and not landscape?! #PetPeve
So after Pie's update, which i think relaxed the cpu throttling or something, 1440p 60fps is possible now using software playback in youtube vanced with no frame drops, average power draw is around 1400-1700mA though.. so not ideal, but good option if you really want that 1440p

I think the latest firmware tweaked the CPU governor so it has more power..
Also I use latest YT Vanced with the exoplayer turned on
It´s great to have more than 1080p playback with the YT vanced app, but it crashes on launch as soon as I install the microG addon? Anyone got the same problem or an idea what I'm doing wrong? Would be nice to be able to log into my account..

good evening,
i wanted to kindly ask you if, with this device, i could see videos in 4k, for example on youtube (i read that on xiaomi mi 10 lite you see videos in 4k, but i am afraid of having ghost touching problem with that model ). as for LIVE VIEW inside GOOGLE MAPS, how does it behave? go jerky?
I await you and thank you very much, it is important
Hi. The 4k option doesn't show up for me. Not that it matters though. 6.6" display at 1080p resolution wouldn't make a difference anyways (except for huge increase in data usage). As for Google Maps live view it seems to be working just fine though to be honest I find it being a useless gimmick. Some old Nokia phones had a similar feature and it was just as useless back then as it is now.
FYI I use Vanced not thr stock YT app so it might be different there.
You can try to to look for Vanced Youtube
Like I said I use Vanced and even if you set 2160p as your preferred resolution there's no visual difference only in the amount of data pulled to play the video. On like a PC monitor or TV you might notice less compression so it might make sense to use a higher resolution than your display can support but on a tiny smartphone screen? Unless you absolutely have a need to burn through your data without any profit I'd say stay away from 4k.
Trying to watch a 4k or even a 2K video on a 1080p screen ? What's the point ?
You can't display more than effective screen pixels...
