Identifying as an Edge for some reason - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

I just bought an s7 in canada, and it seems to be rooted and running Hydra rom ( https://forum.xda-developers.com/s7-edge/development/rom-hydra-rom-v1-2-aroma-t3455653 ) that is an s7 edge rom
The device keeps showing as G935f which is an s7 edge but this is NOT an edge. I want to return to stock but I have no idea what phone this actually is. And what carrier it is tied to. I can't flash a stock firmware if I dont know the exact carrier it was originally on, and the guy said he bought it unlocked from another guy

This should hopefully give you more info https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vndnguyen.phoneinfo&hl=en
If it's unlocked you can flash a stock firmware of your choice no? I haven't got a clue what carrier my grey import was originally on but it flashed my carriers firmware fine.

Go to:
About device -> Software info
Under baseband version the real model of the shown should appear.
My Baseband version is "G930W8VLU2BQB6" and G930W8 is the model number.

[Q] S6 variants - which firmware/modem/bootloader is interchangeable?

I'm not as concerned about this for ROM flashing. I'm wanting to find out if my G920T can use G920I or G920F modems/bootloaders, etc.
Here's my deal. I have a T-Mobile G920T. To unlock this phone I need to get away from the G920T modem. I previously had a G920T1 (MetroPCS) firmware set installed and it worked great, but the rom sucked.
I've since restored back to stock G920T and i've rooted/twrp, but I see other ROM's and I'd like to give them a shot. The catch - they all say I need to have the newest OI7 firmware installed. I'm still on the G920T sim locked OH8. The only OI7 modems/bootloaders I can find are for the G920F variant. I can't find OI7 for the G920T1 variant. I don't know if the G920F variant will sim unlock my phone. I don't want to brick my phone to figure that out, so this is the reason why I posted this question. I can flash ROM's all day long, but if I can't use my Cricket sim when I'm out in BFE then the ROM is pointless.
Does anyone understand what I'm asking?

DO NOT flash any FIrmewares through odin if its isn't your model number, if you purchased your phone and don't have an EIP you could sim unlock with the app, so any rom your on unless its not Touch wiz based (aren't any available besides touchwiz)

Galaxy s7 "updates software" option missing

Hi, I have just bought a brand new galaxy S7, model SM-G930F.
Although it is an international model, it carries a snapdragon 820 processor.
I am told , that it is a USA model, built under Verizon.
SM-G930F is supposed to be a global model with exynos, does anyone knoes what is the phone I bought?
Anyway, my real problem is, that the "updates software" option is missing, in "about phone" list.
I am stuck in android 6.0.1
I checked it is not rooted and it must be a genuine phone.
Can anybody guide me through solutions?
I would really appreciate any help.
Thank you
Moving to general S7 Q&A since you say it's a SM-G930F.
Check the back of the phone and verify the phone model. You should be able to update through other options like Kies, unless they've changed that recently.

It's not a G930F if it has a Snapdragon processor
Commonly faked to look like G930F by editing firmware / stickers / model numbers etc, more likely to be the G930V if it's Verizon
Boot to download mode and check the model number in there, that's the only one that can not be faked
(Volume Down & Home & power)
And they likely removed the update option from settings to prevent any problems of the phone updating to either the wrong firmware, or removing their fake edits with a V update
Flash the proper firmware with ODIN 3.12.3 or newer from updato.com once you know your model S7
Galaxy s7 "updates software" option missing
Dear Durham,
Thanks for the help.
Yes, you are right; it is G930V.I have been tricked...
I have visited updato.com and found 12 variants of S7 firmware.
My bootlader version is - 6.0.1 November 20, 16 USA (Verizon) (VZW) G930VVRU4API3
Shall I download and install this one and afterwards make a manual software update or
shall I install the latest - 7.0 August 25, 17 USA (Verizon) (VZW) G930VVRS4BQH1 ?
After successful installation, will these firmware fake modifications( to G930F) disappear permanently?
I am much obliged
Thanks

The ROMs from updato.com are full ROMs so you can just flash the latest / newest one and you'll be 100% up to date once it boots
Use CSC and not HOME_CSC though as you are going to want to reset after the flash to clear any hacks from the previous ROM (This will wipe the device so backup any important files first)
CSC, AP, BL and CP
Yes this will permanently remove any modifications from the faked ROM
Wish me luck, I will give it a go!
You have been most informative, many thanks.
Good luck :good:

The good news is that the verizon edition can be rooted and is network unlocked from the factory so as long as ure carrier supports the bands it will still work for you on a side note flash the u firmware not verizon and u wont have any verizon bloatware out of the gate either
Mad scientist, thank you for your intervention.
Just to be clear, which firmware do you suggest me to install, not the verizon G930V?
Could I install the G930F for my country (Europe).
I thought they are incompatible...
As my bootloader version G930V I think I would better stick with the V version.
Are you suggesting not to upgrade to nougat and reinstall factory installed 6.0.1 and better wait for 8?
Yes you are right, I am not good at twiking. Will I have drain baterry issues with nougat?
Dear Durham,
Emergency help!!!!
I installed it succesfully but now it does not recognize my sim card, as it is from a non USA country.
Should I reflash a different firmware? F or U ?
I am from Greece
It seems to be working...
The Verizon logo appears upon starting the phone
But in language selection, there is only English and asian languages available.
Software update finally appeared.
In order to have my langage back, should I reflash with the U ( unlocked version) or the F (global)?
No mobile data.
Maybe I am calling through Verizon.Roaming.Expensive.Scarry...!!
He means that the G930U firmware will flash fine on the G930V, it is the same firmware but without the Verizon bloatware added
You can not flash any other firmwares, it just happens that those two are compatible with each other
Flash straight to the latest
So I shall flash the G930U?
Will my sim card be recognized and mobile data be active.
Nougat 7 or MM 6-your opinion, again?
thnks
No idea if your SIM will be recognised, but if it's not working with the V firmware it's worth a try
As I said, flash the latest firmware which is Nougat
Personally I would be contacting the seller and asking for a refund / exchange for a real G930F that you paid for
firmware
I tried, but he is not cooperative.
How about F version-it worked with it before ?
(only it was modified with the dissapearance of system update.)

No you cannot flash any other model firmware, that was NOT the G930F firmware, it was a hacked / faked U or V firmware
I think you better read a good few threads before going much further or you're going to end up with a brick
Contact the seller and request a refund
Don't suppose you can flash CSC files of the 930F on 930V?
Dear all,
Thank you for your help and interest in my problem.
This is indeed a great forum!!!
I tried to flash the F version, but thankfully odin stopped it from the beginning, presenting "failed" message.
I suppose if it continued, I would end up with a brick as Durham suggested.
Finally I flashed he U version, as mad scientist suggested, and up to now it works like a charm.
As Durham advised, I used CSC and not HOME_CSC and the hack was eliminated.
Sim card is recognized, no bloatware and mobile data working.
Let's hope it will continue like this...!!!
Only glitch, not everything is in my home language ( message icon name and in settings-the menu options-any idea how to fix it? - I removed english and left only my language as selection, but onle these remain untranslated)-small problem
I have learned a valuble lesson from my adventure.
Ebay, an organized platfrom may it be, it cannot control each individual's deceivals, so one must be extra wary when buyng from unofficial sources, nomatter good reviews from others...
Thanks again to you all for your help, I would be in serious position right now, if it weren't for you guys.

The informations on download mode are in chinese and I don't see any number. Have you an other solution. Thanks
According to the screen shots, the phone had an sm-g930o bootloader and baseband but the model number says 930fd.
Does the IMEI match a 930o or 930fd? Where did you get the phone? Does the IMEI in the phone match the IMEI on the box or anywhere on the packaging?

The IMEI in the phone IS the same that on the box. When I check IMEI, the return IS G930F Galaxy s7 (SM-G9300) and the phone IS a dual sim
The 930f (exynos) and 930o (Qualcomm) are different models.
The 930o is a China phone: http://www.phonemore.com/samsung-galaxy-s7-duos-sm-g9300/specs/3148 which explains the Chinese writing in download mode.
Where did you get the phone? Box looks like an original Samsung box? Does the phone have a label on the back with the IMEI?

Do you know if I Can install Twrp and root this one and some custom roms? Thanks
I would not flash anything until your know the model number for sure.
The phone could have been put together with different parts or installed with incorrect software.
You see any model number in download mode? If there is no English, maybe attach a picture of the download screen.
Since the text in download mode is Chinese, I think the motherboard inside is a 9300 and the 9300 ROM could not be used because the China phone would not have the Google Play store.

But I have Google play store because if you look at the PDA it's G930FXXU1BPH6 which is G930F Hungary fw. They have mix some different fw. BL and CP are G9300 china and CSC is G9350 Hong Kong (TGY). I don't know that it was possible. I think the bootloader are unlock but not sure
If the bootloader is for a 9300, then it is a China model and the stock 9300 rom would not have the Play store which is probably why it has a 9300 bootloader and a rom from another country.

Yes you're right if the PDA is China. In my case the PDA is Hungary. For my culture, the PDA contain the different Google apk and services, no?
I would contact the seller and ask why the software is mixed up and maybe exchange the phone for another phone.

Ok thanks to you. I think he had convert a sm-g9300 into a sm-g930fd.
Samsung phones can't be converted from one model to another. Samsung bootloaders are not always locked but they are restricted to running bootloaders that are made for a particular model. Odin will not allow you to flash a 930f bootloader onto a 930o phone.
The phone motherboard is probably a 9300 and will only take ota updates if it is running a stock 9300 ROM. I'm not sure how you will be able to install security updates and patches.
I have the same problem. My phone is g930f buy the chipset is snapdragon. What firmware should I flash now?

Refurbished Galaxy S8+ running Note 8 firmware?? I just want to flash my firmware...

Hi everyone. I have a Galaxy S8+ that I bought on BackMarket a year ago. The phone has been great, but has always had problems with some phone calls going straight to my mailbox for no reason, texts not coming in then suddenly working if I send OUT a text. After some research and contacting my provider (United States, Ting), I was told that this is because I need to enable VoLTE. My phone didn't have the option to do so and when I called Ting again, I was told that this is because my phone was the International version and VoLTE wasn't supported on that model.
I thought that was the end of it, but this week I had the thought that maybe this is a firmware thing instead of a hardware thing. Calling Ting again, they checked my IMEI and said my phone should be able to do VoLTE. Great! All I needed was Odin and the right firmware (I was thinking G955U1, TMB). So here's where things get weird. As I started to set up for flashing my firmware, I gathered the following info:
IMEI.info says I have:
Model: G955F Galaxy S8+ (SM-G955N)
Here's the info I get when running the "Phone INFO ★SAM★" app.
Phone Model: SM-N950F / Galaxy Note 8
Firmware's CSC Code: XEF
Bootloader Version: G955NKSU3CRI3
PDA Version: N950FXXS5DSC6
CSC Version: N950FOXM5DSC1
Latest Firmware: N950FXXSDDTJ1
If I'm reading this right, it looks like I've had a Galaxy S8+ running Note 8 firmware? At this point, I'd still like VoLTE, but even moreso, I'd like to just know what's going on and what I should do about it.
Seems like somebody installed a modded Samsung firmware on your phone. Check download mode for KNOX, I think it will be tripped (0x1).
If it is tripped then no Samsung Pay and stuff that depends on KNOX. If you are fine with that and just want to get VoLTE working, download the right firmware for your device and flash it to stock. If stock everything is important to you, I suggest contacting the seller on BackMarket and getting a refund or something if the seller didn't specify tripped KNOX.
BTW, if I remember correctly G955N is the Samsung direct model sold in Korea, so depending on CSC and what not VoLTE might not work. Best of luck
Thanks for the reply.
So I ended up solving this with the help of a few people over on Reddit. Here's what was going on and what the solution was, for others that come across this.
The phone was running v6 of HadesROM. I guess the creator of HadesROM uses the Note8's OS build as his base for the Note8/S8/S8+, which is why the phone was showing up as an N950F. And the phone itself was a G955N, which is a Korean model.
At the direction of a few people on Reddit, I used TWRP to re-flash with the newest version of HadesROM and set the Firmware CSC properly to a US Carrier.
When the phone booted back up, the VoLTE setting was present in quick settings and works great.

Question Flashing firmware with a different CSC

Hi!
I have a Galaxy A12 model SM-A125U with TMK region csc limited to Metro T-mobil
I would like to flash the phone with a firmware for the unbranded phone XAA region CSC.
The new model firmware is SM-A125U1_XAA
I don't know if I will brick the phone since it is network locked to Metro Tmobil.
The unbranded model # has a "1" after the model # but I am hoping it is the same model only unbranded.
Any suggestions or knowledge shared will be appreciated.
I apologize if I posted in the wrong place.
Thanks

In theory, it "should" be safe as long as the binary of what you are flashing is not lower than the binary what is currently installed on your device. Keep in mind that flashing the X firmware will not have any effect on unlocking the device and will not allow you to activate the device on a different network.
Thanks Droidriven,
I don't know how to check the binary of the file nor what it is.
Can I flash the firmwareto my phone with odin even though my bootloader isn't unlocked?
