Stock launcher or 3rd party discussion - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

I've always installed Nova Pro as the first app on new Android devices due to the better customisation but it looks like a lot of the features are starting to appear as standard on the built in launchers these days.
I've loved the swipe up for the app drawer for years and swipe down for notifications.
What's everyone's feeling on the stock launcher or will you just stick something else straight on?
Anyone know of any killer features the stock launcher has?

For me it's Apex pro. And more than likely it'll go on my s8+ too. Just like you I like the customization. Haven't had a galaxy since the 4 but I'll still prob hate TouchWiz

I have always used Nova Pro also but I do like the look of the S8 so I may see how I go without using if for awhile. It will be a big change for me as I have used Nova for years.

I always use nova pro too since my S3 but I will have a quick look at stock, probably before deciding I hate it and putting nova back on
It may depend on how I can set up the grid on my desktop, in nova I have it set to 8x7 (and may up that for the s8+) so I can have virtually all the apps i need just spread over 2 desktops, and last time I tried stock I couldnt have anything like that, just a few massive icons instead. You don't need an app drawer when you can just stick 30 odd icons over 2 desktops. I also like the infinite scrolling on the desktop.

Question. Do the icons change in Nova when changing themes on Samsung's theme engine?

I think so, but then again I've been using icon packs for nova for so long!

Yeah grid sizes are very useful. I'll keep using the app drawer though, i only like having 2 pages on my home screen!

I'll play around with the stock launcher for a bit and go right back to Nova like I usually do.

All are fairly good now days depending on your likes. I use Nova Pro.

I always go with Nova right out the gate

Haven't used a custom launcher since my S3, as I was content with TouchWiz on my S6, especially with the addition of the theming engine. This time around, might play with some launchers again, but at least at launch, will stick with stock.

Is Buzz Launcher still any good?!i know Themer is no longer supported.

Oh! That's the launcher I used to use on my S3. I liked it, last I recalled, but haven't used it since. Think I was just too lazy to go through the whole customizing process again, and I didn't mind TouchWiz on the S6, lawl. I did take a look in the Play Store and it's still compatible with my S6, so don't see why it wouldn't still work on newer devices.

another long time Nova user here since the S3, but on my current S6 I've actually been using the stock TouchWiz with themes applied and i like it. i'll be using stock on the 8+ for awhile before making any changes. i remember trying apex when it first launched and didn't like it at that time, but if I decide touchwiz is tehsuck then will try pretty much anything available.

Same exact thing I do with every phone. I'll mess around with the stock launcher for a month or so but I always end up going back to Nova Pro.

Been using Next Launcher for a long while...Like it alot..

Nova Pro as always.

I won't even bother trying their launcher, straight to Nova Prime.

I like Nova too but pretty impressed with Samsung's launcher on th S8. It's been pretty smooth.

Smart Launcher Pro here... Got my phone via preorder yesterday and although there are some nice features on the stock launcher, I hate how Samsung has monetized every aspect of it.

Wow....more votes for stock/rosie than I would have guessed.
Not as much of a following for ADW EX as I had expected. Sounded like it was taking off.

I really wish it was a way for stock to have 5 options like launcher pro. That would make stock the number 1 launcher. I'm sure it many others who would like to see that one day.
i like Launcher Pro Plus the best. the way im able to hide icons/notification bar/etc and also do swipe gestures, diggin it!
I've been using Launcher Pro Plus ever since it first came out, and haven't really tried anything else. The number one thing that makes it better than stock for me is the scrolling dock.
I would try ADW or Go, but I'm too lazy to set up all my screens again.

I agree but I like sense widgets and launcher pro widgets I just would like to use both like have two facebook and twitter accounts setup one for sense and one for lp. It's like a business setup and a personal setup lol. I just wish stock had the five options in the dock like launcher pro

Is launcher pro the only one that will let you change the dock background? Or can some of the others do this now?
I never retired adw besides in cm6 what's different in.the new ex? Does it have anything LPP doesn't have?

I would like to hear from someone who has tried most of the launchers.......as to which one is the smoothest. Launcher pro plus is fairly smooth most the time but does lock up on occasion.
Anyone tried a majority of them?

I have used LP, LPP, Stock, ADW, and ADW Ex.
LP and LPP are smoother than ADW, which is smoother than Stock.
ADW Ex has been the smoothest over all for me tho, I have had zero issues with it.
I haven't heard of Zeam or Go, but the other 2 I have tried i didn't really care for were Panda and Open Home.

i've been using adw ex for the past month or so, it's fully customizable. and i had just paid for launcher pro plus.. only thing i miss is the calendar widget but other than that, it's super fast, smooth, stable, never force closes, and so on. just a great launcher replacement.

Lol, I mean I like my icon layouts and am too lazy to recreate them in a new launcher.
I love ADW EX, but he has to implement the ability to change the dock background. The transitions on cm7 are just wicked.
I was a HUGE LP homer until ex dropped, but once the LP re-write is out, if ADW still doesn't have the option to chaneg the background then I'm afraid I'll be going back to LP. The only thing I miss other than that is the bookmark swipe ability..the market has everything else.

I'm not crazy about the LPP widgets. There are free ones on the market which are just as good or better in my opinion so can live without those (only ones I even use are calendar and contacts).
One question.....I read from someone that ADW EX doesn't have customizable dock background pics. Is this true?

Launcher Pro Plus FTW.
I've tried ADW (regular and EX) and while I really, really like the performance and tweaks, I keep coming back to LPP for the speed and widgets.
Hmm. Maybe I'll try EX again, now that I think about it....

What is the best alternate launcher for the G2X?

Now that I finally got my G2X updated to GB I was wondering what alternate launchers, if any, people are using and how they like them. The stock launcher is nice but lacks customization features such as resizable widgets, changing icons layouts, removing homescreens, etc.
Go launcher
I can't say enough good things about Weapon 2.3 ROM and it's included TouchWiz launcher from Samsung.
If you are running factory GB on your G2x I can assure you The Weapon ROM is every bit as stable as stock if not better, with way better battery life and a bunch of other cool gee whiz features.
LauncherPro. I've been using since May 2010.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
Launcher Pro - the widgets can't be beat, especially now with theme and icon pack support. At times I try another launcher, but I always come back to launcher pro for the widgets.
I've yet to find people, bookmarks, and friends widget comparable to launcher pro except sense ui. There are others that mimick the functionality, but they usually slow down the device quite a bit. Launcher Pro remains fast.
I think LP has the best ALL Around setup. The built in Widgets are great and backup/restore will save passwords so you don't always have to login again to Twitter and Facebook.
Unfortunately the developer has been ignoring it for some time and is starting to lack some features. While it JUST got theme support, it doesn't seem to be moving very fast. Very limited. Plus they don't have "whole" theme support so icons and widget themes are separate.
I'm using LP now but going back and forth to Go Launcher. Go Launcher has downloadable widgets that are comparable and cool in their own way. Also "Colorize Widgets" also make a good LP Widget Replacement.
So the 3 main ones are ADW EX, Go Launcher EX, and Launcher Pro.
There are other weird ones like Samsung TouchWiz, LG Launcher, Sony Xperia Launcher, etc.
Honestly just find one that works they way you want. I'm currently using ADW EX on my Asus Transformer because it recently added much needed support and features for tablets (which the others lack). On the G2x either one of the 3.
go launcher.. also has widgets.
but you can add to that with colorize widgets. an awesome pack made by an xda user.
the combination is unbeatable in my opionion.
I've grown quite fond of ADW, myself. Though, I haven't tried LP.
I also used a launcher called Crazy Home, awhile back. On top of having extra home screens, it gives you up to 3 desktops...each with 5 home screens. So, if you REALLY like home screens, you can have up to 15 lol. It also allows you to hide apps in your app drawer. I ended up going with ADW, because I could load my own icons, and use them...CH was a bit more limited.
I'm a huge fan of Zeam. I used it on my old HTC Magic because it was fast fast fast on the old hardware, and I continue to use it on my G2x.

I'll second the TouchWiz launcher. I'm using it standalone with Miui. It looks awesome. I've been a ADW guy since my G1 days and continued using it with the Nexus One and G2X, but I gave TW a try a few weeks ago and haven't looked back.

I have tried ADW, LauncherPro (used for 6 months) and finally used GO Launcher. I have been using GO exclusively for over a year now and love it. Its free and has a ton of add-ons and themes and the GO Team is constantly making updates and improvements. I think there has been like 3 updates just this week alone. Anyway my vote goes to GO Launcher. I use the ICS theme and its pretty sweet, and GO has a ton of performance options.
Definitely Go Launcher
I find GO Launcher to be very sluggish and slow, using FTL or Zeam myself for the speed increase.
I doubt GO Launcher can be sluggish on an Xperia Play WodgeFTW...
It's got decent RAM and a good processor.
I was always a huge fan of Go Launcher but I got sick of it recently (it occasionally failed to load my widgets after a reboot) and wanted a change.
I'm currently using Nemus Launcher and love it. It has a scrollable dock bar, can resize widgets and is lightweight and silky smooth. I don't miss Go at all.

Im trying to pick one too, GOLauncher seems best so far, now that I see I can be rid of those annoying + signs in the dock. Im using it alongside DesktopVisualizeR to make that whole, magazine page tile look.
I use to use go launcher until I realized how much memory it uses. I swithched to sslauncher which does a lot and uses low memory resources. its really quick too
I use to use GOlauncher, and it was ok, then i switched to ADW Launcher Pro (PAID) and i love it! I am about to try out ssLauncher though its suppose to be 100 times more customizable.
stock launcher..
Thanks guys ^^

I use zeam and sslauncher, cause they seem to be the lightest ones. The latter is far more customizable, but zeam has gestures. I love the stock look though.. I would've kept it if you hadn't to go deep to reduce the number of screens to 1.

Actually, I find go launcher needs to be restarted every few hours or so for unless I'm running cm7. The stock roms don't seem to be able to run it well. Also, my ZTE Blade which I bought for £89 off contract has more ram (512mb vs 400mb on the play) was able to run it considerably smoother without needing it to be restarted, and it's really mystifying why Sony decided not to have 1gb in there to begin with.

Launcher 7 for me.
I love the style of Windows phone.
All the tile options allow me to express myself.
My phone is like rainbow at the moment and it is a joy to use.
I've tried ADW, GO, and several others, and I found one that is lightweight and extremely customizable. It's called ZEAM launcher. try it out, it's not even a half a megabyte, if I remember correctly.

Apex vs other launchers

Hi guys, new here but I notice that most developers use Apex as their default launcher when they post AOSP ROMS. My question is why? What's the difference between Apex and other launchers like Go Launcher?
Thanks1

Apex is optimized specifically for ICS and integrates a lot of ICS's features. However I prefer Nova way more. I always immediately install Nova because I like the interface a lot more.

I'd disagree based on my experience. Both has been problematic for me but, Nova has been more annoying than Apex.
I've tried both Apex (pro) and Nova Prime and i prefer Apex a bit more. It seems noticeably smoother than Nova on my device, particularly on my widget heavy homescreens.
Thanks guys,
So it seems that it's just a matter of preference. So then, if you opt to use a different launcher, how would you get rid of the default one embedded in the ROM? Or would you?
I'm on clean rom de 4.1 and using nova launcher. It comes with apex but I find nova runs more smoothly, with no lag. So I used root explorer and went in to system/apps and deleted apex launcher(after I installed nova of course) . I have not had any issue doing that.

I have Nova and Apex on my phone. Wanted to try them both out. I find that with the same home screen setup on both devices, Nova is a bit slower. Going back to the homescreen in Apex is instantaneous. Sometimes Nova does a full redraw and it takes a second or two.
Other than that the launchers seem identical to me.
Chalk another one up for Apex.
It's always been smoother for me, no matter what rom I'm running. Even on ICS roms on my T-Mobile G2 before the One X.
Scrolling through homescreens or app drawer pages in Nova is too fast and/or choppy, even if you set the speeds to "stock" in settings (I like to "enjoy" the animation). I also like more of the features Apex offers, like customizing what shows up when you hit menu, disabling haptic feedback (long pressing icons/wallpaper) and the way it handles locking the desktop compared to Nova.
Btw, I'm using Apex Free on the phone, and Nova Prime on my Transformer Prime.

What features does Nova lack that Apex has?
The only feature I've noticed that is exclusive to Apex is the ability to make the search bar look like the tablet version. I emailed the Nova developer about this like nine months ago, and he said he may decide to add it in the future, but he obviously didn't.
Other than that, I haven't noticed anything exclusive to Apex.

Last time I checked it couldn't remove app labels in the app drawer and still had wide margins on the bottom of the home screens that couldn't be reduced/removed when the dock is absent. Apex does both of those.
Apex functions I need
Infinite scroll
Scrollable app bar
Gesture launch
KitKat has redundant access to google now / search. Swipe left, swipe up from home icon, say google now on any page. Why do we need all 3?
Also I dont want to have google now 1st screen to left. I like to have mail, calendar productivity full screen widgets to left then have music, news, reading widget apps to the right. My preference is no icons on screen above the app bar. Full screen widgets look great on such a nice screen. Simplicity please
