Has anyone found a way to screen cast? I've seen and tried a build prop edit that at least allows cast to recognize TV but won't actually allow the screen cast to "beam" the display over. I've read android took away the native functionality at some point, but my HTC 10 worked fine. Any thoughts?

I'm running stock rooted and I can cast just fine to my Sony tv or to my apple tv just by selecting it from the devices shown without any build.prop edits.

Casting works fine for me too.
Doesnt work when using an app that prohibts it like NFL app or MLB app.
Is that what you are asking to cast?
I just go to Settings->Display->Cast.
I have tried this on stock/pureNexus/rooted/unrooted.
I have a Sony TV. Runs some version on Android.
Be on the same Wi-Fi?
I don't know what else to say.

Nope, just straight up mirror my phone screen. Never had issues with it before on any phone I tried...My son's iPhone and wife's new G6 both do it. And funny you should mention NFL Mobile, that is how I watched games on the road to n a hotel, mirroring to hotel room TV.
Edit...My bust after thinking about, it was DirecTV/Sunday ticket, never tried the NFL Mobile app.
I just tried to cast the phone's screen to my Smart TV(Sony) - didn't work.
Here are the steps I take when trying to connect Pixel phone:
-Go to WiFi Direct settings on the phone
-Put TV in screen mirror mode(input)
-TV's name/model appears on the pixel phone
-Tapping on the above name/model, just says "Invited"
-On TV's screen, under devices nothing comes up
-If I go to settings>display>cast on the pixel, there is nothing in the list. On Nexus 7 I was able to select "enable wireless display" in the menu.
I took the same steps in the past with my Nexus 7 (2013) tablet and it works properly. As a matter of fact I still have my tablet and tested just now - works fine. I believe Pixel either missing the feature or has a support for a different mirroring mode which my TV isn't compatible with. I do know that my TV works with Miracast.
I just found this tread...which seems to point out that Google possibly removed the feature.

So I noticed the other night I was able to stream a movie from my Note 10.1 to my Samsung TV. I have 2 of them, which I guess both have a built-in Allshare support. Do all new smart TV's have this and or some sort of feature? i.e. if I went to a friends and they have an LG? or would I need to get something like this?
For tv's other than samsung you need the Allshare cast hub/dongle... This allows you to use your tv set as a large screen...
Would you mind briefly sharing your method?

Connect Allsharecast hub/dongle to the TV via HDMI (turn to right channel), pair note10.1/SGS3 and see all things mobile on your TV screen....
This works on all TV's but be aware that rooted devices must have stock recovery installed to work. I've also noticed that some stock roms won't work no matter what recovery you are using....

I'm rooted with the CWM recovery and the Allshare cast works all the same (but maybe it's necessary to reset the counter with Triangle Away as I did).
Did that but wouldn't work, Back to stock recovery and it worked....
I'm on UK JB. That might make a difference. Also I found that even though I use triangle-away to reset the counter, on JB it stays on 1 every time I reboot...

Can't that be accomplished without a dongle? I swear I've seen that advertised somewhere before...

I have too, My TV is on the list of compatible devices, an LED/LCD TV from 7000 series 2011 (Samsung of course), but it just won't connect.... Might do for later TV's but after a lot of hair pulling and some absolutely useless advice from Samsung's help desk it, "You're not doing it right, that's why it won't work", I bit the bullet and got the dongle...
Works now, after some hair pulling and experimentation as I was rooted....
I even have an ES8000 model from this year and I can't get it to work. Hopefully Miracast will solve the issue if Samsung doesn't fix it on their own.

So if I want to see everithing that goes on on the tablet screen on my tv (xda for example) I need to by a dongle, but if I only want to see the movies or foto or music on the tv I don't need the dongle. I can send movies on the tv screen but I'm not able to mirror everything.

In theory, yes... In practice....?
So just an update on this on my original question. Just got a new LG 8600 Smart TV, and I guess it supports Allshare (or whatever protocol the tablet uses). I started playing a movie, hit the send to TV button and it worked on my LG. it took a little longer to load then the Samsung TV, but it worked fine.
Hi, allshare is different to allshare cast. Allshare sends your movie to the TV as data, the tv then decodes this data and actually plays the movie itself, this is done using DLNA and so any DLNA tv will work with allshare, not just sammsung TV's.
Allshare cast is a different animal altogether, its part of the miracast protocol and simply sends the picture from the phone to the TV, the decoding is done by the phone, the TV simply mirrors the video and audio. Currently the only way to get this to work is to buy the samsung allshare cast dongle. To use this simply plug it into your TV HDMI port and turn on Allshare cast option on your phone.
Hi,
I have tried alot and always failed Is there anyone who tried mirroring Xperia XZ to Samsung smart TV series 5?
if yes, can you help me in that?
Thanks,
In phone U have a miracast and TV also have screen mirroring option turn it on and connect a phone to TV that's all.
I have Samsung 6 series TV, Just turn on the screen mirroring option on your phone, on your tv just make sure that you select the allow option. You are done
Thanks for replies...
The problem is I cant see my TV from the phone. I use wifi direct and I get connected.
Then I open screen mirroring, but cant find the TV. I go to the source list in the TV and cant see the screen mirroring. I go to all share menu in the TV and cant find my phone. I even tried to connect to my TV wireless from my wifi list and nothing works as well.
Can you share the exact steps?
Thanks,
so any detailed instructions?
Are you running stock nougat? after the nougat update Google broke miracast, you can fix it with this guide I wrote up awhile back https://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-xz/how-to/guide-fix-miracast-screen-mirroring-t3583743

Thanks alot for your reply... but do you think there is any solution for non-rooted device?
Hey everyone, can you test your screen mirroring feature on your phone and tell me if it works? I can't find many bug reports about it. For me it doesn't work.
My OnePlus 6 can presently cast the screen directly to my Roku stick and Roku TV without any issues.
I bought a 7 Pro (Oxygen OS 9.5.3 GM21AA) and enabled "wireless display" and this is what happens:
- I select Cast from the drop-down notification bar
- It searches forever without finding anything
- I click Settings
- It finally finds and shows me my available Roku device (or any TV that has screen mirroring)
- I select the one I want
- It says connecting
- instead of connecting, the list of eligible devices, including the one I am connecting to goes blank
- The list gets reset and nothing is connecting
Any attempt to try again, after I reset my phone, restarted my modem and my WiFi etc gives me the same situation.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I hate when older devices work great and newer ones don't. Both are running Android 9.
No? Just me? Lol
Hi, for me it works. Chromecast, shield tv, google home or integrated cast.
BUT, there is an issue with the resolution, my tv is 1080p, source too, but I have black margins around..
@cainman
1. You must have WIFI enable to be able to use Screen Mirroring.
2. Go to Cast setting and tap the 3dots and enable it.
Been Mirroring my device my device since day 1 without problems.
Looking for the best way to connect my g7 power to a Panasonic Viera non smart tv.
I pay for BT sport which works on my phone but trying to get it working on the larger screen, tried various apps and firestick mirroring but non seem to work.
Does anyone know if a cable is available that would work or is it not possible with my set up.
As far as I can find Motorola doesn't include support for video out over USB-C. USB to HDMI cables won't work.
Casting is the only option.

Do you think Chromecast would work
I've tried mirroring to the Firestick and although the g7 finds the the Firestick signal it asks for a password, that I've never set up and it's not the wifi password and I can't seem to find much info on it.

Should. Casting per app works better.
Not sure on the Amazon gear, never used one. I'd expect something in it's setup to set/show password. Maybe a few searches for help?
You can purchase a USB 3.0 laptop dock with DisplayLink technology to mirror your device directly to any HDMI enabled device.
I own one, and have been using it extensively for months now.
It is important to keep in mind, you do NOT want a USB C DOCK. A previous poster explained this device doesn't have all the extra circuitry, so you cannot pass a 'protected' stream through the dock. In other words, many apps won't display the video playback on the dock.
BUT!!!! Most, if not all, video services that have a website appear to play just fine mirrored (use the website, not the app!)

Google dropped Miracast from Android 6. So an OE has to add it back. Motorola is running nearly stock Android and isn't going to add such.
And as time goes on I expect only Samsung and LG to continue it since they sell TVs. But they may be forced to stop by Google's certification rules.
I think Lineage still includes support so if 3rd party ROM ever show up there may be options.
There are other casting apps that work (most need an app on the display too), but not as smoothly as built in Miracast. I tried a few in my Roku, but they really weren't worth the effort.

I've tried all of these "apps" most are basically a shortcut to the wireless display screen, My Razer 2 was still mirroring perfectly on Pie, but this moto? I've been able to enable the wireless display check box but every time I try to connect to either Fire Sticks/Fire TV, or a brand new NEX series head unit the phone crashes and reboots. I think after enabling the wireless display again its just a problem of screen resolution differences and rotation, looking into it. There are also a couple modules in Magisk to enable it. It crashed and bootlooped my phone and it was a pain getting it back. I do not recommend them with the G7 Power.
hi all
i've been casting from my pc to my tv(chromecast) since they almost came out, but recently i've noticed when casting to my tv my screen is not switching off like before so now i have the content playing on both screens. it used to be a blank screen that said something like screen mirroring/casting to tv and it would stay blank.
but that doesn't seem to happen anymore
thanks in advance

This really isn't the kind of question that belongs at XDA as it deals with a PC specific situation and not an android related issue.
But, I can try to help.
It could be a result of an update that your PC has received between the time that it did work as expected and when it stopped working as expecting, the update could have altered settings when it installed.
I'm not sure the following works when using Chromecast or not, I'm currently looking for PC casting to Chromecast specific information.
In any case, when you connect the PC to TV, press the Windows button + P, then choose secondary display only.
Or, try this link that shows how to change this via settings. The link is to a Lenovo related site, but, the instructions are for Windows 10, it should be the same for any system using Windows 10.
https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/HT504128
I found this when looking for Chromecast specific information.
https://support.google.com/chromecast/thread/1186346?hl=en&msgid=16159431
And this,
https://support.google.com/chromecast/thread/1186346?hl=en&msgid=12755084
And this supposedly makes the reply in the above link a little more clear.
