[Q] Prepaid mobile plan for someone travelling to the US?

I have an AT&T banded unlocked phone (Nexus One) and I'm going to be travelling to the US at the end of the month and I'm debating getting a pre-paid SIM card and putting in in my phone while I'm there. Any ideas about where the best place to go for this would be and what I should expect it to cost? I would like to have data so that I can use email while voice would be nice, but not really necessary.
I'm guessing AT&T would be my first place to look, but I suppose I could go with someone like T-Mobile and just deal with only having EDGE speed. What's the best deal?

the problem with tmobile is their internet is not internet....its worse than wap. alteast on my prepaid... att is good would cost 20$ would unlimited texting including sending to canada...sim is free from a att store...data is 20$ for 100mb and 5$ for 1Mb unless they changed it

Only100 mb? I would blow through that in a day... I guess I'll wait and see what AT&T has to offer when I get there.

Why the hell does T-Mobile get all the good phones?

They always seem to have the best lineup (Nexus One, Nexus S, G2, MyTouch 4G, etc) but the absolute worst coverage and expensive plans! I know they're huge in Europe, but why are they so loaded in the US? Is there something I'm missing here? Sprint, who easily has the best prices and very good service, only has two "top-tier" phones in the EVO and Epic with nothing new on the horizon. Someone, please enlighten me!

Thank You. My wife and I had reps from Sprint, Verizon and, AT&T tell us that they cant touch Tmobiles prices. I know people with Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T and they all talk about how high their bills are and how they get charged for everything.

Sprint's "Everything Data - with Any Mobile, Anytime" gives you unlimited mobile-to-mobile (any carrier), unlimited nights and weekends, 450 "anytime" minutes, and unlimited everything else. Given the fact that pretty much everyone has a cell phone now this is essentially unlimited talk time. Price: $69/month + $10/month luxury tax = $79/month.
T-Mobiles's "Even More™ 500 Talk + Unlimited Text + Unlimited Web" is essentially the same as Sprint's aforementioned plan, but you can only call other T-Mobile customers with unlimited minutes, which is the smallest percentage of cell phone owners. Price: $79/month.
As you can see, you get the same price, but with Sprint you have a MAJOR advantage in the unlimited mobile-to-mobile calling. A similar plan on T-Mobile is $99/month (same as Sprint's "Simply Everything," though unless you make it a habit to call landlines in the middle of the day the "Everything Data" is already fairly unlimited). This was my major problem with T-Mobile's pricing, so unless there's a secret plan that I don't know about Sprint is still cheaper.

there is a BIG gotcha in those any mobile any time plans BTW.....
sprint has a huge list of rules for calls that qualify for anymobile any time...
such as you cannot be roaming, you must have data service not just voice service for said call to qualify (as in if you are not currently recieving a data signal your calls go against your minutes)

oh yeah and sprint's CDMA, thats the biggest reason they will never get my business, keep your grubby little hands outta my phone damnit!

Is that "holiday plan" eligible for further discounts (i.e. student) though? I'm assuming that you can only get it in-store since it isn't on the website.

dunno... i can get em over the phone but i am an inderect dealer... so try and find out, if not go hit up yout local RadioShack and ask for it

I saw that, but I've never used more than like 15 "anytime" minutes a month, and those were when I was calling my house. I can't really think of any times that I'm roaming, so that's a non-issue.

my MAJOR gripe is i cannot change phones at will, i have a MT4G G2 N1 G1 MT3G MT3G 1.2....
i like to bounce between the G2 MT4G and N1...

I would think that tmo (and other non-CDMA) carriers get the phones because they are GSM, which is closer to, if not the very same standard for those areas outside of North America.

With CDMA you are stuck with your carrier's discretion when you want to switch phones(IE, you have to call them up go through an annoying process when you want to switch). With GSM it is your discretion, since its swaping over the SIM to the other phone you want to use.

First off, GSM ftw. CDMA need to just, die. WTF did they decide to invent it anyways. Dumb assest move.
Either way. T-Mobile is THE BEST. AT EVERYTHING. *if* you get good coverage where you live.
My plan with T-Mobile is 59.99 for 500 minutes (which I only use 200~ of), unlimited texting, and unlimited data (at 7.2mbps on my vibrant!), free WiFi tethering, and WiFi calling. Even More Plus ftw. No contract. Eff contracts. Did I mention the reps are nicer than any reps of *any* company? And actually speak English?
Also AT&T are overpriced pricks, Verizon same, but also CDMA, Cricket, too small, Sprint, their 4g is slower than T-Mobile's 3g, and they're CDMA...

What plan is that? Were you grandfathered in from a previous agreement, or is that an actual plan that I could sign up for?

That 500 min plan is a plan you can sign up for right now. You have to get it in store though.

?! No I got it online. Pay full price for the phone then get the discounted even more plus plan with no contract. And no. I switched over from Verizon. Well. Had Cricket for a year (was under 18 lmao) then tried Verizon out, which wasn't much better than Cricket, so I got T-Mobile. And even more plus. And I've been flying on the real, true nation's fastest mobile data network since. Except that I tried AT&T for 20 days and ended up losing 400$ out of that as well as 80% of my calls being dropped. Terrible month.

Why is the plan with no contract cheaper than one with a contract? It seems like it would go the other way.

on the contract plan they are subsidizing the phone....
no contract = outright purchase of handset.

Tmo is way cheaper than I can get anywhere else, my wife and I have 5 lines on our plan with 3000 minutes, unlimited texting on all lines, and unlimited data on hers and mine. For about 200 a month.
My parents have two iphones on ATT with data and unlimited text and I think only around 500 minutes for like 120.

[Q] Help choosing phone and provider, please?

I have a MyTouch 4G on T-Mobile. In a year or less the AT&T buyout of T-Mobile may happen and.... I have to decide what's next for me.
1. I'm happy with the MyTouch and my T-Mo plan but I have no contract and therefore no protection at all against whatever changes may result from the buyout.
2. Physical or on-screen keyboard is fine, no preference.
3. I need VERY little voice time, less than 100 minutes a month for the last 10 years so the 200 minute senior plans from AT&T or VZW are fine for me.
4. I need LOTS of data so price is a consideration.
5. I MUST have UMA or WiFi calling to cover all the places I need my phone but I think that's impossible, I doubt AT&T will add that and I know VZW won't.
6. The choice is between VZW and AT&T, don't want to go into reasons for that. I have a lot of very bad experiences with AT&T and a lot of good experience with VZW, offsetting that is that my current phone(s) are GSM.
So.... should I try to live with AT&T or get a new phone and go with VZW? Price will be exactly the same either way but I'll need to sell some phones and get a new one (eBay or Craig's List, no contract!)
And, if the recommendation is VZW what CDMA phone is close to the MyTouch 4G in performance and features?
Any suggestions much appreciated, thanks!

I'm not really sure what verizon phone is the closest to what you have right now, but they do have a few good smartphone options. I will say that if you're planning on switching, you should do so before the 7th because there will be no more unlimited data on new plans after that.

I've been on sprint for awhile now mainly because the pricing. The evo 4g is comparable to the mytouch 4g. The evo 3d just came out for sprint recently which is a beast of a phone but I'm not upgrading just yet. Explore all your options and visit androidcentral, they have many reviews of android phones from all carriers. I'd suggest looking over there to get some more input

the merger has not happened yet and it will be at least 8 months till it goes down and then prob at least half a year till everything gets switched. People are worried but it takes time to get thing swiched over. You might even get a cheap trade off phone when that happens. There is nothing cheaper than TMO and you seem to be happy with it. Why not just stick with it till the merger happens.
Pick up a Sensation or a G2X and stay on Tmo as long as you can.
But if you really want to switch then I would pick verizon (unfortunetely there are not phones on vzn that I really care for right now but you cant go wrong with the network availability and speed but super high prices).
As mentioned you should consider sprint, closest to tmobile in prices and decent network with 1 nice phone which is the evo 3D.

First, I have no contract nor will I, I'll stick with T-Mo as long as possible but it's never too soon to start searching Craig's List or Ebay for a phone if I do go to VZW. Question is, if I port my number now, will I still have unlimited data next month or the month after on a month to month deal?
Pricing, Sprint is the most expensive option by far, both VZW and AT&T offer senior plans which I had when I was with VZW before, Sprint has nothing similar. BTW, T-Mo only saves me $5/mo over VZW. I get more minutes I can't use/don't want with T-Mo but who cares?
Coverage: I switched to T-Mo because they had coverage where I need it, VZW doesn't (I know, that's the reverse of most people's experience!) but w/o UMA/WiFi calling I'll be back to no coverage in most places where I need it regardless of who I chose.
(T-Mo used to offer an unlimited data only plan with per minute voice, that was the best for me but it's no longer available.)

technology moves pretty fast these days.. i would ride out your t mobile plan until the merger gets closer then look into plans and phones. As one person stated verizon is dumping unlimited plans after the 7th so maybe thats a deciding factor for you.

I looked at plans and phones today, VZW still has the Old Fart's plan for $30/mo so that's fine, the data is a worry. I can get the unlimited plan today but w/o a contract will I get to keep it next month?
With the 65 Plus plan for $30 and the data plan for $30 I'd be paying only $5/mo more than T-Mobile but with no UMA/WiFi calling which is a major problem and the reason I'm staying with T-Mo as long as possible!
The change from unlimited data is a good reason to switch today but with no guarantee that I can keep the unlimited plan I'm scared to change!

I don't know how unlimited data works without a contract, you'd have to ask Verizon. As for wifi calling, why not just use Google voice?

On a scale of 1 to 10 I rate UMA as a 10, WiFi Calling as about a 6, Google Voice as a 0. It's just not an acceptable alternative but it is an alternative I suppose...

I agree with that but I suspect that AT&T will remain T-Mobile for some time after the buyout, as in honoring my current plan and maybe continuing to offer UMA/WiFi calling. I expect everything will continue unchanged for some weeks, maybe months? I'll switch when I have to unless something unexpected happens.
I'm able to switch any time, I have an old VZW BB, an 8330, so I can port my number over right now if I need to....

At this rate, when people test 6G we started erecting 4G network is OK

I have a month to month deal with Verizon. Coverage is good here in Western PA, much better than AT&T. Very happy to still have unlimited data!

I have had sprint for a short time, but it has been really good.

Unlimited data seems to be as extinct as dinosaurs, those who have it will be allowed to keep it (for who knows how long?) but new customers can't get it.
I have an unlimited plan with T-Mo but I'm sure that'll be going away, the question is how long will it last after the buyout? I'm guessing I'm OK for at least a month but then????
For most customers, the lowest limit offered by most companies is more than adequate.

With AT&T for awhile now. Not too impressed with coverage or service. I wouldn't recommend them at this point. Would have stayed T-mobile but their coverage was worse where I need to go. If T-mobile works for you, why change. When AT&T merged with Cingular, it didn't affect customer of either company until they signed up for new contracts, which sounds like it won't be you.
I don't know if it is a precursor to what's coming but a new T-mobile device from Huawei is being tested by the FCC with T-mobile and AT&T HSPA+ bands. Max speed @ 42mbps. Engadget has a small article on it.

I don't know much about pre-paid details but I believe in my area they use second rate towers therefor not as good as contract. Your best bet would be to check with people who already have verizon's pre-paid in your area even if on different phones.

Here's what I get. Its way better than what I was getting on sprint.

Cancelled Verizon pre-order, thinking about Tmobile

So I have been creaming over this phone for an entire month. But after reading again and again, i decided against it. I am seriously considering tmobile's, Here is why .
I am ordering the phone full price from verizon so i can keep my unlimited . I Tether all the time and my lowest data usage has been around 6 gb, i can go up to 60 sometimes in a month.
right now I own the S3, its of course unlocked and rooted with custom everything.
1- The fact that now KNOX is coming to the picture and the uncertainty of the rooting future scares the crap out of me. WIthout rooting, i cant tether, so i am buying a full price phone to keep an unlimited that i will not use to its full potential as I wish. ( this is not a moral thread, please refrain from giving me life lessons ). I also hate ads with a passion, gotta run ad blocker, and i cant imagine living life without XPOSED. ROOT IS A MUST.
2- Tmobile phones come unlocked, I am btw only referring to bootloader, which i care deeply for, I dont travel internationally , so sim unlocked is not an issue I care for, from the very first day, I need to verify it , but if thats the case, then i will finally feel like I own my phone that I bought .
3- with an extra 10 dollar month, i get to change my phone every 6 months. AND THIS AMOUNT INCLUDES INSURANCE FOR MY PHONE .
4- T mobile is a heck of a lot cheaper , unlimited every thing costs a fraction of verizon.
5- I will beat my self with an ugly stick , if they release a verizon developer edition in the future. I'll wait a month or two ( its killing me inside ) to see the developer status, if they release it , i might contemplate ordering it from samsung , but it will fix 99 % of my disappointments.
6 -Unless the dev. community unlocks the phone , at least root it , verizon note 3 is just a loser deal in every single way. so once again its wise for me wait .
7- the wifi calling feature , i feel would make up for tmobiles lack of great coverage .
I think i have to stop behaving like a kid and have some patience to see the root and developer status with verizon note 3
Back in the day , it was all about service reliability for me. But now my phone is more than just for phone calls. Its my tablet, laptop, navigator and actually , very lil for direct phone calls. Is verizons service really worth paying outright $ 700 for a phone , that i cant use the way i like ?

I'm switching to Tmobile also but from AT&T pretty much for the same reasons you mentioned. Even in paying for Jump, my plan is still cheaper with Tmobile then the same plan is for AT&T.

Considering T-Mobile as well because I'm on Sprint and you know how their data and network is... :silly:'
Also Sprint had the smart decision of making the Note 3 single band LTE . They are the only carrier in US with single band LTE Note 3 while their network has tri-band LTE. T-mobile has like quad-band LTE support along with the others. I'm also on a Sprint Sero Premium plan which makes switching difficult as I'll be paying more through T-mobile but I think it will be worth it for the better overall network experience. I may just keep my Sprint and use T-Mobile $30 plan with the Note 3 for a month to see how it goes.

I left Verizon over a year ago, went to Sprint (big mistake) and had the Note II now I'm on T-Mobile with a Nexus 4 waiting for my pre-ordered Note III to ship.
I have ZERO issues with T-Mobile and I'm so glad to be away from Verizon's politics. I mean when the Galaxy S III came out they were the only carrier in the world to lock the bootloader.
If T-Mobile's coverage is good in your area I would say make the jump!

Doesn't T-Mobile throttle your data though? What good is unlimited data if it gets throttled after 2GB?
I am on Verizon's unlimited data as well. What I do when I want to tether is I switch my SIM card from my Crapple iPhone 5 to my wife's Crapple jail broken iPhone 5 and tether away.
Yes, it's a major hassle, but hopefully the Note 3 gets rooted. I don't think KNOX has any effect on the bootloader being unlockable.
And it's way better than being on a carrier that throttles LTE.

T-Mobile has unlimited data, but they have several different amounts of "HighSpeed" you can select from. They have 500mb, 2.5gb and unlimited.
If you choose lets say the 2.5gb plan then yes once you go over the 2.5gb you get throttled but if you choose the unlimited then you do not get throttled.

Their unlimited 4g plan has no throttling and 2.5 gb personal hot spot included. with their edge and unlimited text and talk and not paying the price phone in full its 94 per month. if i pay every thing out right ( which is what i am planning ) becomes 80 a month.
I also wanna add another reason, Jump from t-mobile: the $10 jump fee, includes insurance for the phone and the upgrade every 6 months !

verizon's edition , from what I hear will be bootloader locked. What scares me is that HTC one has not been rooted till now ! Also , S4 bootloader is still locked, although they do have root. However, this is pre-knox days .

I am leaving Verizon mid Oct, when my contract ends. There is no reason for me to stay as they have made it clear they don't want my business. Been a long time.

We all do not know whether T-Mobile version has unlocked bootloader or not.
However, if you pay in full in the first place, you can receive unlocked code after the trial period is over.
If you have Nationwide 4G, phone only data is 100% (or 99.9999999999%) unlimited and you have 2.5GB hotspot sharing included, but according to my experience, I don't see throttling on sharing part yet (your mileage may vary however because I am a 10 years customer).
Make sure you get HSPA and/or LTE wherever you are.

I think tmobile may throttle you after 5gb on the unlimited plan but in not sure. Thats fine with me though.

T-Mobile has no history of locking bootloaders so I would put my money on that the bootloader will not be locked. Even more so now that they don't have contracts and your buying your phone outright.

Well i am really grateful for all the constructive additions to this thread. Thanks to each and every one of you. I think I am going to preorder the tmobile edition tomorrow, and i just found out that they give 20 days trial period instead of verizon's 14 days. So i can really play with the reception and see how they stack up against my s3 with verizon.

I'm on Verizon right now but I preordered the T-Mobile Note 3. I've never had T-Mobile before but I'm willing to try them out. Their coverage map looks good in my state but coverage maps can be deceiving. I'm definitely gonna be driving around and checking things out for the first 14 days. I hope all goes well because I don't want to stay on Verizon and I'd rather things go well with T-Mobile than to go to AT&T.

So wait a minute.
Say I have the $80 everything unlimited plan on TMobile.
That includes 2.5GB of hotspot tether.
What if I use a third party app or a custom ROM that hides the hotspot use? Can T-Mobile still catch that and spank me?
Reason I ask is because I live in an RV for part of the year so I don't have access to cable internet. LTE is my only source of internet.
I tether about 80 to 100 GB per month on average. How would that work on T-Mobile?

Hmm, the more I think about it, the more intrigued I am.
If am able to use an app to hide tethering, I think I might make the jump!
