Gear S3 S Health walks/runs shutting off - Samsung Gear S3

Hello folks, need some help.
Just got my Gear 3, and when I turn on walk/run a few steps later, it pauses and asks me if I'm done with my workout. Not sure what's going on.
I am going to try and uncheck the auto pause feature, but I'm thinking it has to be something else. I make sure my arms are moving, and that its tracking steps, yet it's still pausing.
Any help would be appreciated.

The auto pause is useless since it does not also auto-start when one starts moving again. If you pause, either auto or manual, then after 30 mins it will ask you if you are done tracking. If you accidentally touch the screen after pausing then the workout quits. I have, several times had it quit the workout seemingly without warning when its paused - can only think that I have accidentally touched the screen. Best bet is to forget the S3 as a fitness device and go buy a garmin instead...
Nigel

I'm not even touching it.
I start a walk, while walking, 10-15 seconds later I feel the double vibrate, check the watch, and it's paused the walk. Frustrating.
I'm using the c25k apps from the phone as my guide, but I like running s health to track. I wish the gear would interface with runkeeper or any of the other apps to track overall since s health doesn't seem to want too.

The under armour apps are available for the watch as an alternative. Eg endomondo, mapmyrun etc.

Same problems occur with MapMy Run from Under Armour. In fact its more prone to it than SHealth! Am submitting ticket to UnderArmour today about the recurring problems with MapMy Run just pausing and locking up on every single hike I've used it on after 3-5 kms. Worse still when it does so only way you can get the app to work again is to completely unistall it and reinstall it on your S3. Sooooo frustrating!

Just to update on my own issues with MapMy Run app on the S3 locking up part way through a workout. Since installing latest version 1.1.3 of MapMy Run I tested the app on a 6 hours + hike on Friday and it worked great without locking up at all. It automatically paused and resumed whenever I stopped for a rest. I will test it again this coming Friday before being overly confident, but so far so good!

5.1.1 still aggressively kills common apps

This is super frustrating.
I knew that Android 5.0 had issues, because prior to 5.0, my LG G3 never ONCE closed out a chrome tab while I was playing podcasts.. After I got to 5.0.2, I had problems with the browser being closed when in the background AND I had about 5 other apps I was actively switching between... though I had to leave the browser in the background for a good 5-10 minutes before anything bad happened.
Things are quite different on the S6 Edge, and there's no improvement moving to 5.1.1 -- at all. In fact, it might be worse.
I've gotten in the habit of rebooting my phone every 4-5 hours to help combat this, but it's still infuriating.
Common examples:
- I get in my car, start Escort Live, start playing music on Spotify, then load up a route in google Maps. Within 3-5 minutes, Escort Live will close in the background without warning. Sometimes Spotify closes as well, simultaneously. Sometimes maps will close.
- Playing a podcast in Chrome, sometimes just hitting the home key will kill what I'm listening to.
I've exhausted my search efforts looking for some way to keep these apps alive. There's no legitimate reason to ever close Maps, Escort Live, Torque, Spotify, or a Chrome tab playing audio. What's going on here? I know that it was widely established that 5.0.2 still had this issue, but rumors were circulating that things were fixed after 5.0.3+. This is noticeably worse that my LG G3. It basically eliminates the ability to multi-task.
Does anyone have any tips to fixing this? Currently I am not rooted, because I wanted to see if 5.1.1 would help out with this issue.
Thanks!
wow...this is unfortunate news to hear. I was holding out hopes that 5.1.1 would finally allow the edge to shine as the phone it should have been. sounds like there's still a long ways to go. Wish I wasn't still waiting for the damn OTA....sigh..
Maybe you could use Smart Switch to upgrade? Not sure what version it provides...

I'm wondering if I can create an init.d script to have an app stay running. I'd chkconfig on using tasker or whatever. Probably need root for that.

Apps Being Unresponsive or Hanging

Hi guys. Everything is great with my v20. The problem is that there are certain apps or games which I use, although fully updated which stop responding after a few hours. There is this one game which I usually leave open to farm on its own on auto. Eventually it stops responding to touches on the screen even if the sprites on the app itself keep moving. It comes up with a notification prompt to close the app, wait for the game to respond, or send feedback I have to reboot the phone to get it to work. Anyone else experiencing this kind of behavior and how did you remedy it. I already tried turning off power saving mode and the game optimizer to no avail.

Nothing can be done, you just have to wait for the app to update, although two apps I use xe.com and tsum tsum is having problem it's still usable.
It's a android 7 thing, so it's a waiting game.:fingers-crossed:
Most likely the Android 7 being the culprit, just watch for updates it would seem that there are some changes under the hood that are causing compatibility problems.

Yep. Probably nougat issue or memory leak problem. I'm leaning towards nougat. Luckily I've rarely had the problem.
Thanks guys. I kinda figured out it was a nougat problem since it's not consistent with all apps and just 2 apps in specific.

MyFitnessPal, Endomondo And Map My Run now available for Gear S3 And Gear S2

MyFitnessPal, Endomondo And MapMyRun are now available from the Galaxy Apps store for Gear S3 And Gear S2
See http://www.ubergizmo.com/2017/03/myfitnesspal-endomondo-map-my-run-gear-s3-gear-s2/
More info on installing and running MapMyRun on Gear S3 is now available at https://support.mapmyfitness.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000286803-Samsung-Gear
Just tested MapMy Run today for first time while hiking. Looked really good (nice clear sharp display with lots of information) and I was well pleased with it, until it just stopped tracking after around 2 hours 20 mins. The display just stopped at teh same time and distance travelled etc and stopped updating. I tried pressing the Back button and the voice announcement offered to Pause tracking. As I did NOT want to pause tracking I clicked the Back button again, and it said it had resumed, but it stuck at same time and distance for the rest of my hike. However, this is not unique to MapMy Run. I have been encountering exactly same issue with tracking my hikes using the native SHealth app in recent weeks. When I first got my Gear S3 it worked perfectly at tracking my hikes, but in past few weeks it just keeps auto-pausing and will not resume. I already posted about this bug here but nobody has suggested anything. Very frustrating as tracking my hikes and other workouts was one of the main reasons why I bought this smartwatch but it is now just totally unreliable for this. Soooo frustrating!
If anyone can suggest any fixes I should try I'd really appreciate it.
I love the MyFitnessPal app. Got a free year of premium for logging in on my watch,
Tried both on S3 frontier. None of them worked as it should . Both had issues on instant speed and distance. Checked on endomondo website and they say they are aware of the problem and are working on a solution
MapMyRun
Thanks!
Still no solution for the GPS tracking issue - wrong mapping, wrong distance on Endomondo/S3 setup....
I've not used GPS yet but the workouts are EXACTLY what S Health was missing, and really look great. Takes maybe 3 min to update to my endomondo phone app. HR is accurate and battery drain is minimal. I like it...but we'll have to see for the runs.
It's okay, but what I don't like is, that it's not possible to use a trainingsplan on gear-s3.. S-Health works fine with it.. Also Bad, that endomondo doesnt read out the Workouts done with S-Health
Tried endomondo, mapmyrun, record and none track distance correctly. Sticking to shealth for now.

Map My Run UPDATED!
I ran yesterday using the MapMyRun app (and left my phone at home) and sure enough, the GPS wasn't working right with the app (even though I had Location On, GPS). I was using the version I downloaded back on March 9th. I got home and saw there's a new update on March 20th that addresses the GPS issue. I downloaded the new update but haven't tried it. (Stuck at the office right now on a rainy day too!) I'll try it later.
Download the new Map My Run update and let me know how it goes. Thanks! :fingers-crossed:
Went for a 5k run with the latest mapmyrun this evening, it tracks distance correctly this time. Record shows the run as well. I presume endomondo will be alright since it's essentially the same thing.

That sounds hopeful. I have updated to the latest version and am going on a hill walk on Friday so I will test the latest update myself. Up until now it's been very unreliable and usually just stops recording part way through a hike, so I'm really hoping this update will have fixed the bugs. I'll update this thread after my next test.

Thanks. I also tested it yesterday on a 30-minute walk (without my phone on me) and it tracked it nicely using the built-in GPS in the Gear S3, however, there might be something wrong with the Voice Feedback. I had it set to announce every 1.0 Mile, Distance, Duration and Avg. Pace/Speed. After walking a mile, I only heard the Avg. Pace/Speed.
Just now, I tested it in my office building. I had the Voice Feedback set to announce 1.0 Minute, Distance, Duration, Avg. Pace/Speed, Current Pace/Speed, Split Pace/Speed and Current HR. After one minute, it only announced the Duration and Current HR (maybe it's because the other status required GPS to track Distance and Pace and I was indoors so I disabled the GPS). But still, in my 30-minute walk yesterday, it only announced the Avg. Pace/Speed and failed to announce the Duration and Distance.
EDIT: Everything appears to be fine now.

The voice feedback was alright for my run. I had it set to 1 km interval on the watch, distance, duration, pace/speed and HR were announced over the music.

Thanks. I did another 30-min walk and turned on all stats to announce every 10 minutes. It announced them just fine so it's okay now. I don't how yesterday was different.
I seem to be having an issue with Map My Run. I want to use my watch as a standalone and I have GPS enabled and it's also enabled within the MMR app. However, whenever I go to start a run it says "Maps unavailable. Ensure GPS is active on your phone and your Gear."
Is it not possible to map the run with just my Gear?

I was able to run or walk with just my Gear using the built-in GPS. I just tried it now. I went outside, turned OFF BT and WiFi on my Gear (so it's really just a standalone watch now -- I have the BT-only edition, not LTE) then started MMR. I have Location On using GPS & Wireless. MMR has GPS set to ON. It took a while to "acquire GPS signal." I think, to help it, I use this App called "Quick GPS Position" to get the GPS started. Check it out on the Gear App Store.

Well here's my update - and it's not good news. I used the latest version of MapMy Run on my hike yesterday. All seemed to be working well up to around 5kms. It was auto-pausing when I stopped for a rest and restarting when I resumed walking. However at around 5.2kms my watch gave a notification of an email and after that (it may be coincidence) I noticed that MapMy Run had stopped updating. As on previous tests it just froze and I could not get it to resume. This time I fould that even if I closed the app from the "Recent apps" option on the Gear S3 it would not restart. Worse still - even after completely powering my Gear S3 off and switching it on again, if I start MapMy Run on the watch now it just displays the initial blue loading screen but never starts up properly. So looks like I'll have to try completely uninistalling and reinstalling it. Not impressed at all with this app! It's just sooo buggy and I don't think it was ready for full release.
Does anyone know of a suitable support address, or community forum, for Under Armour where I can report the problems I'm encountering directly to them? I found the support FAQ pages at https://support.mapmyfitness.com/hc/en-us and they do not even mention the new app for the S3!

It is like this Tizen works.
Same on my S2 with watchmaker face with step counter. As soon as I have a notification the step counter stop and no re-start.
Close recent app delete all open app from memory and reset all this app data. Even if you start the samsung stopwatch and after close recent app, your stopwatch is deleted
Same issue for 4 years with the Tizen Gear watch (Gear 1, Gear 2, Gear S and the new S2,S3). Even if you not close recent app, Tizen close itself app when he want. I never sucessfully run a stopwatch for 10H and more with Tizen all tizen stopwatch close itself after awhile re
To avoid notification interfere with running app, you can disable notifications when you run

I'm not sure if you are using "stopwatch" as a generic term to describe ALL apps on teh Gear that track duration and/or your position, but it is interesting that you think it's the notifications that interfere with such apps. I will need to monitor that more closely to confirm if the tracking just stops when I receive a notification. You may be correct, as certainly I was encountering the same problem originally with S Health on my Gear S3 - in that it would just suddenly stop tracking and it would not resume ( see my other post here.
Anyway, I need to be alerted to emails etc while out hiking, so disabling such notifications is not a viable workaround for me. If anyone else is able to confirm in the meantime that receiving a notification while on a workout does indeed interfere with the workout monitoring app you are running at the same time, that would be very helpful for us all in trying to diagnose exactly what is causing this bug.

S Health Auto Pause (Does not restart) - also, sports not synced from phone?

Hi
Does anyone else have issues with the auto-pause facility on S-Heath running on the watch.
I was out mountain biking last weekend, stopped for a rest, tracking paused (good), started riding again, and after another half an hour of riding noticed that the tracking had not auto-started. It seems that after an auto-pause, I have to remember to press the back button to get the damned thing to start tracking again? I will never ever remember to do this! - if it auto-pauses then it should also auto-start! The only solution would appear to be to disable auto-pause, and not stop for any rests!
So, is this normal behaviour? Also, sports wise, there are hundreds on s-health on the phone, but only a tiny subset on the watch. I can start 'cycling' on the watch, but not 'mountain biking' - the S-Health app on the phone has both. If I start the activity on the phone, then the watch does not get used at all? I would have expected the phone app to realise there was a gear S3 attached and prompt 'start activity on watch?'. Also, if I edit the sports on the phone app to just those that I actually do (which I have done), I would expect these to be synced to the watch, replacing the activities shown on the watch.
Usual deal, Samsung makes decent hardware, but can't write decent software for toffee...

Agreed. It's a recurring bug which also affects UnderArmour's apps such as MapMy Run. I'm submitting a ticket to UnderArmour today to see if they can find a solution.
This weekend I was out road cycling, used manual-pause instead. Paused it for lunch, and when I went to restart it found workout had ended. Cant guarantee that I did not accidentally press the finnish button though. Ended up with two separate workouts in s-health each one 2 hours long.

I restarted s health to record the rest of the ride.
When I got home, my phone had recorded the full ride but in 3 sessions all from the s3.
I have workout detection enabled which seemed to have worked today, so is there any point in starting an exercise on the watch if workout detection will do it anyway?
Hi,
How I can manually start cycling session with autopause on Gear S3 using S-Health?
EDIT: Found it, I will test it tomorrow

Have you figured out how to log mountain biking using the watch yet? I just got the gear sport and was surprised it doesn't have a mtb option on the watch. Any suggestions?
sorry to piggyback on this one, but on my watch, when i go into SHealth, all i see is Calorie stats. However, on my phone, under the "ME" section, i have selected various routines, but none show on my watch. I uninstalled and reinstalled, reset the watch after the update, still nothing. Any suggestions?

S7 overheats when using Gear VR (2016 version)

Hi!
So I bought the Gear Vr 2 (the 2016 edition) and after about 30 min use streaming videos over WiFi I start to get warnings about the phone overheating.
From the reasearch I could pull, it seems to be a very rare issue on S7s, with people reporting pulling up to 2 hour gaming sessions with no such warnings.
I've tried closing all apps in background (from going to recents and closing all), also restarting the phone and trying right after. And while it I did get a few more minutes, I still got the warning. If I ignore it and keeep using it, the phone gets super laggy. Also tried going into airplane mode (with only wifi running) but still the same.
Any ideas? Never noticed the phone heating up much on any other event.
BTW, I'm on stock nougat.

if you own a Samsung Galaxy smartphone and are experiencing excessive battery drain, overheating and performance problems, VR might be the cause of all your problems too. Oculus recently sent an app update that has started creating these issues. The problems affect Gear VR-ready Galaxy phones, but the fix is pretty simple.
Okay so it seems that some people on here have come to the conclusion that the battery drain issue that some are experiencing is from an Oculus update this morning (Gear VR). I tried uninstalling the app completely to see if that helps at all – Reddit user said
You can fix these issues by simply disabling or deleting the Gear VR Service until Oculus sends an update fixing the problems.
Go to Settings > Applications > Application Manager.
Locate Gear VR Service.
Uninstall or disable.
Support on community discussion thread advises users to “uninstall Oculus Home first, and then Oculus Rooms (in that order) and then re-dock” the Galaxy device. “After you do that, it should download the latest working update,” hopefully fixing the issue.
Before uninstalling or disabling, however, simply open the app and see if it fixes the issue. Some users have reported that an Oculus update pushed itself through when the app was opened. The update seems to fix the problem. If it doesn’t, try the above fixes to see if you get rid of these problems.

When you search Google, check the dates (2016)
Click to collapse
Check when an article was updated. It may still show an older date, the date of the initial release, but if you click on it, you may see that it was updated, and when. Or if it was not.
So, even older articles may be helpful.
Thanks for your replies!
