TWRP is an open source, community project. TWRP development is done by roughly 4 people at this point. We also have a large support community with many people who are willing to answer questions and help people with their devices either through our IRC channel or on forums like xda-developers.
Team Win was originally formed to work on porting WiMAX to CM7 for the HTC EVO 4G. After our work on the EVO 4G we wanted to work on a project that would work on more devices than just the EVO 4G and we settled on working on a recovery. Today TWRP is the leading custom recovery for Android phones.
A custom recovery is used for installing custom software on your device. This custom software can include smaller modifications like rooting your device or even replacing the firmware of the device with a completely custom "ROM" like OmniROM

As soon as I get a chance buddy. I've been working some crazy long days(60hrs/WK) and dealing with family issues.
Just stick around and hopefully me or another SlimDesire Dev will get to it ASAP.

Wow only one person well 2 now hit the thanks button. Show your thanks people.
Thanks by the way dev

Appreciate the love Josh, but I've been in the Android game here on XDA since 2008 and know that not all things are appreciated. No worries, Captain_Throwback deserves all the thanks for this build anyways.

You good bro I've been here since around 2008 myself. My first phone was HTC mytouch 4g lol and uneven the first Android phone the G1 and so forth. I know the G1 was the was the first Android phone but I didn't hear about rooting until HTC mytouch 4g. Been doing it ever since, I even ported few roms like MIUI. Maybe soon I will be porting to this device.

Hope this is not considered as spamming threads. I just think this message is relevant to this thread in particular since is TWRP-related.
In case some of you can not load the TWRP image from the first post in this thread in your devices after flashing it, i recommend you try this another image also by Captain_Throwback. It worked with no problem on a HTC Desire 530 from Claro Chile, and maybe it will work on other versions.
Captain_Throwback said:
Alright, rebuilt TWRP with dtb separated (though that really shouldn't make a difference). If this one doesn't boot, I'll try using the dtb from the 3.0.2 TWRP, and if that still doesn't work, I'll just revert to the kernel/dtb from the original 3.0.2 release. I was hoping to be able to use the source-built kernel to patch the touch driver and clean up/fix some things, but that may not be possible. Unless this works, in which case, yay!

First of all I would like to thank anyone and everyone who has made phone rooting guides, they definitely help out!
Now my question, does anyone have the stock RUU: RUU_A16_UL_M60_DESIRE_SENSE70GP_TMUS_MetroPCS_US_1.36.1550.5_Radio_01.01_U113251531_68.01.61229G_release_495720_signed_2.exe
I cannot find this file anywhere, even the download link on HTC's website is broken. Unfortunately TWRP wont work on my Desire 530 because I upgraded my ROM to 1.36.1550.14. So I need to downgrade from what I've heard in order to get TWRP working, then I can install an S-OFF kernel and install Super-SU. Make sense to anyone?
I unlocked my bootloader and flashed TWRP to my recovery. When I reboot my phone into recovery I see the TWRP screen, then the phone reboots. I've tried clearing my cache partition, and that hasn't helped. I managed to do this by following directions for clearing cache partition on T-Mobile website with stock recovery image BTW. I also tried flashing several different versions of TWRP, some experimental builds by Capt Throwback, and some builds for other phones. I just can't get any relief.
Thanks in advance!

Purple Drake Lite from the G3 forum..
I tried Purple Drake as well.
Right after the tablet boots up after the temproot process, the command line says device found and then Error in red with a bunch of other stuff. It flashes too fast to read, cloees the cmd window and reboots my tablet.

You have to go through all the pc connections to install all the drivers... Mtp,ptp, charge. Once you get those installed make sure it is on ptp then eun purp drake lite..
Thanks for your work Shoxxy! Question for you though... after installing and creating a backup, I rebooted and tried clicking Restore just to make sure it worked and no backups are listed there. I can navigate to the backups using the TWRP file manager, but not through Restore.
@swizzel
I tried that as well. No joy. Thanks anyway. I will keep looking through the forums to see what I am missing.

I'm not sure if it's possible to do something similar to display the backup when using the default theme or not.
You were right. The theme is hiding the button apparently. I had clicked all over the place (I thought) and not found it, but just tried it again and it came up. I'm going to remove the theme and check again. Thanks for your help!
EDIT: Removing the TWRP theme solved the problem.
@Swizzle
I tried the drivers from the LG site and also the non-verizon driver from the purple drake thread.
I will try the other option you suggested.
Thank you all for the assistance!
So I gather the process for the 410LTE version to root is Purple Drake Lite first then TWRP? Or is TWRP optional? oh and sorry about the newbie question but what is the function of TWRP? Thanks in advance.
I got 2 from the recent ebay deals and want to root. Possibly want to get one of the T-Mobile plans (Harbor Mobile, basic-internet.com).
TWRP is kind of optional until we get some custom ROMs, which are in the works.
However, LG has never released the firmware for the V410, so installing TWRP and storing a nandroid backup isn't a bad idea.

its AT&T not releasing the stock software that is the problem. i believe there is a kdz for the v400 but AT&T keeps their stuff hush hush like someone is going to try and steal their awesome bloat formula.

I always figured it was an AT&T thing, not a manufacturer thing. I have an AT&T phone that hasn't had the firmware released since android 4.1.1. Every revision of the firmware right up to the current ones is available for the Canadian version of the same phone.
Luckily there are some great developers on XDA that support that phone quite nicely. It is great to start to see some more dev activity on this little tablet too. Thanks for all your hard work shoxxy (I hit the the button too)!

About
The WinDroid Toolkit is a Windows program built in Visual Studio using the C# programming language that simplifies the rooting process for many Android devices. The toolkit makes it easy to unlock your bootloader, flash a custom recovery and gain permanent root. It also includes other functions such as flashing kernels, pushing files and installing apps. If you find it helpful, give me a thanks and a donation if you can. If you find a bug or have a feature request, feel free to leave a reply. Thanks!

Unlocking the bootloader WILL erase all data. I don't know if you could achieve root without a custom recovery but if you plan to flash a custom recovery you will need to unlock the bootloader.
While this tool worked for me, it didn't work well with step 2. It did flash the recovery but I had to manually reboot to recovery for it to work. Selecting yes/next to reboot to recovery after flashing it through the tool only took me to fastboot. That was the only thing I noticed but other than that, everything else worked perfectly. For clarification as well, I did it on newest firmware available right now (2.2.1).

The reboot option after the recovery flash is supposed to reboot you back to Android because the next step in the toolkit is to push SuperSU, which requires ADB.

Well in my case, it didn't do that either, mine ended up in fastboot. In any case it everything works as it should. thanks!
Worked flawless.
After flashing TWRP where it asks to reboot, it does reboot the tablet but the program seems to get stuck on "Rebooting......" even after the tablet have booted.
I tried waiting a min to see if it changed but I had to remove and attach the USB again before it realized it was connected and said "Move to step 3".
I'm happy though because anything that can be done smoother than ADB (even though it is really easy) is appreciated.
Wow, this looks super useful and easy. I was just thinking of rooting my shield again cause I'm sick of adds and just dropped in to see how things were progressing on the development side.
Glad I did now, might give this a whirl today
Edit: This is awesome! I was contemplating rooting my 2nd shield (after my first one blew up after 5 days) and have been putting it off for a while.
I'm used to rooting n'stuff so I don't find it to difficult but this just made things so much easier! I had it unlocked and rooted in a couple of minutes.
Big thank you for your effort and hard work.
I can't seem to get adb working. What do I need to do to get the program to recognize my shield tablet?
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Xparent Cyan Tapatalk 2
Ensure you have installed the drivers.
And don't forget to use an USB 2.0 port! USB 3.0 ports generally do not work.
Is there any way to do this with Ubuntu?
Thank you for this! It looks like an amazing tool, just what I was looking for. I had a Kindle Fire HD and it was a hell lot of trouble to install TWRP and flash roms, and when I saw my brand new shield had a hell of a process to get rooted in Lollipop the Kindle nightmare just flashed before my eyes (I had bricked it once so my heart practically stops every time an android device of mine reboots, in fear it won't turn on again). It's such a relief to see everything automated.
If you read what I had written there before (some questions about how to use the toolkit) never mind me, I found the instructions
i can't get this to work, it keeps saying OFFLINE. i installed everything it requested when I opened the .exe
Unlocked bootloader.
Installed Twrp.
But when i go to recovery mode on my lg watch r it STILL boots to the stock recovery???
Am i doing something wrong?

[Q] Apply security patch w/ rooted device?

Hello world! This is not my first run with android (by far) but it is the first time something like this "security patch " has come out.
I have a rooted N5 and im running 6.0 build MRA58K and continue to get prompted to install a security update.
My question is, is it safe to install this update, will i lose root or have to reroot? If i "unroot" the system with supersu and then install it after, would that work too? Also i would like to update my kernel to the newest version. Im running blu_spark build #30. Would i just reflash the kernel or do i have to jump through hoops by reflashing the rom first? I dont remember how it works
Thanks

Take a moment to learn how to properly flash a Nexus. You will forget toolkits very soon... You should also take a peek at kernel threads and SuperSU.
Learn and flash instead of flash and fix
NRT just does all of the fastboot commands for me instead of having to copypaste address locations by hand. However something did go wrong when i flashed supersu while booted into the wrong recovery (apparently i was in the temp one). So now im stuck with a boot loop, i guess i will have to reflash everything, its not a big deal. all backups have been made.
Ive been doing this a very long time

Toolkits do "everything" for you and it doesn't help users to think for themselves.
I ask because i never know what kind of godamn changes happen between android versions.
Sometimes A LOT OF THINGS CHANGE which would make a previous known method of doing x not work.

Well, I don't know about Primokorn, but personally I wouldn't take kindly to anyone calling me "a$$face" - not the ideal way to make friends in a community where you're asking for help...
Primokorn makes a perfectly valid point. If you read up on the changes, as most of us appear to do, you would not have to rely on Wugfresh keeping NRT up to date.
Primokorn 8,606 posts Thanks Meter: 5,059
0xicl33n 50 posts Thanks Meter: 17
Show a bit of respect for experience...
So you make a thread asking for help, then you carry on like this...when help and guidance is given. Next time just say thank you and leave it as that, or better yet do more reading than posting. And consider this your warning, and the only one I will give, now that you have resolved your issue, you can read the Forum Rules on conduct/posting.

NOTE ON ROOTING WITH TWRP:
If you have kingroot installed remove this before rooting with SuperSU above or you will have issues.
Kingroot attempts to block Supersu so must be removed first by using the uninstaller in the Kingroot superuser app.
Absolutely NO feedback
Out of literally hundreds of people that have downloaded and benefitted from the files I've posted NOT ONE person has left ANY feedback whatsoever and only 5 have hit the thanks button and 2 very generous people have offered donations to whom I am very thankful.
As developers we need encouragement and ALL we ask is a quick click on the thanks button and a little feedback.
It's not too much to ask is it for hours of work on a device we don't even own?
XDA is a 2 way community, it's GIVE and TAKE not just TAKE.
Due to this I have decided I am not going to update the builds to the new TWRP v3.0.0-0.

Thank you.
DONATE ME HERE IF YOU WANT TO BUY ME A BEER OR HIT THE THANKS BUTTON IF I HELPED YOU

Come on people. It is not asking to much to thank someone for giving us what we need to make our tablets much better. Over in the T-Mobile S6 thread we have the same issues. These devs do this for us in their spare time for free, so showing a little appreciation is not asking a lot.
Hi, sorry for the late reaction. I succesfully installed your custom recovery but than i had trouble with SD card, it wouldn't get locked in the slot so i couldn't try the backup and restore funtions.
Now SD problem is fixed but when i boot into recovery i get stock, TWRP is gone so first chance i get i'll try to flash it again (don't have a PC available right now).
It would be a shame if you would stop working on our device, you gave us a very important tool for witch i would like to thank you.
You don't need a pc. Extract the recovery.img from the .tar file and then flash with flashify.

I've not rooted yet and i'd like to have a backup before i do, so i guess i'll just wait a bit and flash with Odin.
I want to thank @ashyx for getting Root &TWRP for the Tab E. I bought my SM-T560NU one week ago today. The first thing I did when I got home was to search for Root & Recovery and I found this thread. Everything flashed fine for me. Without devs like @ashyx on XDA we would be stuck with ordinary Tablets & Phones. So make sure to hit the thanks button and post feedback to let them know if things are working or not. It's not that hard to do.

+1, I haven't tried it yet on my wife's SM-T560NU 'coz my wife always have the tablet with her. She wouldn't even let me get close to it since I screwed up her phone. I will report ASAP when I get a chance to steal the tablet and root it (hopefully successful).
Thanks to @ashyx in advance and to guys reporting back on their experience. Please keep the thread alive.
Thanks for the feedback guys.

Smt560nu rom
Was anyone able to find the stock ROM for SM-T560NU on SAMMOBILE?
** EDIT ** I've tried two different computers, reinstalling samsung drivers and different ports. Can't seem to get past the setup connection step in ODIN. Does anyone have any suggestions?
** EDIT 2** Got it working! Thanks ashyx!
Mount Problem
When i tried to install a rom, it says 'Could not mount...blabla'. So I did go to the mount-tab and checked it for the second time and it still fails. Help me please

Are you attempting to flash the stock rom with twrp? As far as Im aware there is no custom rom for this device?
I apologize for the stupid question here, but if I am just wanting to do root do i have to flash twrp_2.8.7.0_sm-t560nu.tar first? Or can I just flash the root file

If you're talking about this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3300291
Then you don't need to install twrp.
However installing custom recovery and making a backup is one of the best mods you can do to your device.

When I got my Sm-t560nu last week the first thing I did was flash the TWRP 2.8.7.0 tar in ODIN, then I flashed the chainfire su file in ODIN to root it and everything went fine for me. After that I made a backup just like @ashyx suggested.
Ok thank you so much for all your help!! I did the root part successfully which is what I wanted. I don't understand the purpose of doing the twrp

[GUIDE] Restore Nokia 8 back to stock [Oreo]

For some reason OTA updates were no longer possible on my Nokia 8 (must have messed up something when rooting it) so I bit the bullet and decided to flash it back to Stock...except it was a real jungle of bits and pieces in several threads and it took me hours and a lot of worrying so I thought it would be useful to start an actual guide on how to do it exactly, here it is, any question I'll try to help. Remember though that these are the steps that worked for me on my TA-1052 and even though the method should be the same on all versions it might not work on yours. At the end of the day YOU'RE THE ONLY ONE responsible for any changes you make to your phone
Restore Nokia 8 back to stock :
Prerequisites :
- Bootloader Unlocked https://forum.xda-developers.com/nokia-8/how-to/nokia-8-official-bootloader-unlock-t3847683 and Critical Unlocked (#5 here https://www.techmesto.com/guide-unlock-bootloader-nokia-android-phones/)
- Download OST LA 6.04 and Nokia OST patch from : https://www.theandroidsoul.com/download-nokia-online-service-tool-ost/
- install by clicking on launcher.exe
- replace OnlineUpdateTool.exe by patch in install directory
- delete OnlineUpdateTool.exe.config in install directory
- Download NB1-488B-0-00WW-B04.nb0 (Oreo from June) from https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1t64iHuQQjmMnzcujZtjYplh6ipbiF6Cw
- Use method here to unpack and modify firmware : https://forum.xda-developers.com/nokia-7-plus/how-to/workaround-flashing-oreo-firmware-t3793791
Flashing :
- Start phone in download mode (Phone off : keep volume down pressed and connect to computer)
- Launch OST LA 6.04 by double-clicking on OnlineUpdateTool.exe
- Select NB1-488B-0-00WW-B04.mlf
- Next is greyed out, click on "Edit Phone Information", you will get an error message after a while, clik on OK, now Next is active
- That's it, things should progress quickly with a few reboots in the process.
Rooting : I've tested that using the method here https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=77751877&postcount=2 to root while keeping the ability to do OTA updates works properly if you follow the steps, including to perform an OTA update.
Great work! It really works! Thank you. But now we have another one issue: an official TWRP does not boot (bootloader and critical are unlocked) with Okt. and Nov. SP, it stucks on "Powered by Android". So may be you know how to make it bootable?

Since September you cannot boot. You have to flash patched image.

You don't need TWRP to root the Nokia 8, you can use a pre-rooted boot image with this method https://forum.xda-developers.com/no...ability-to-t3848390/post78171178#post78171178

I dont need TWRP for Rooting but it needed for backup/restore/install - exactly what I need for flashing OpenGapps for example. To make a backup, flash gapps and restore system to previous state if needed.

In this post in Official TWRP topic you find boot IMG with TWRP on @THMSP cloud. Simply flash it to the active slot. There is even one with custom kernel.

Oh! Thank you! The phone is in service for now, but I`ll try it when it come back. Best regards to all who had answered!
Is the firmware file from google drive link provided in this post compatible with TA-1004 also?
What about Linux users?

And I must make the same modification with notepad++ for the .mlf file as that guide tells? I'm was just wondering as that guide was for nokia 7...Just want to be sure. Damn this phone reminds me of the early android years when rooting was not a walk in a park.
Yes same modification of the mlf, any changes to instructions in the links are noted in the steps in the first post.
Somebody tried this method with the phone bootloader locked?
Or the phone has to be unlocked first?

Dunno but if your bootloader hasn't been unlocked you can't have done any "damage" to the partitions/boot ilahe, etc...? A classic factory reset would do the trick to go back to stock.
Thanks webvan!
This really works! I have a TA-1004. Was stuck but with this method I managed to go back to stock and then it started updating as it should.
The single information I was missing, and the cause the OST (6.0.4) didn't work for me was that the phone had to be critical unlocked. It's not enough to just simply unlock the bootloader. You have to unlock critical as well, otherwise OST wouldn't flash.
Glad it helped !

How long does flashing take?
It should progress fairly quickly and not get stuck (where you stuck for that capture?), you would get stuck right at the beginning without a critical unlock.
What is a critical unlock?
This method seems to be failing on me
