Hello,
I'm planning to buy this (Exynos) variant of the Galaxy S7. It has great specs and the availability of custom ROMs pleasantly surprised me. Therefore, I have some questions:
1. How do you go from full stock to being able to flash custom ROMs? Is it difficult to unlock the bootloader? I'm used to Nexus devices where you'd reboot to bootloader, fastboot oem/flashing unlock and that's it, but the procedure is certainly different on the Galaxy S7.
2. Are there any things I should be aware of? e.g. Can I brick my phone with flashing something or doing something that wouldn't brick some other phones?
3. Is it possible to return from custom ROMs to full stock? I guess I won't have KNOX back since that's a physical detail AFAIK, but I can live with it, I guess. Modded stock ROMs can also be flashed from TWRP, right?
4. I was really surprised that the Exynos variant got so much dev support. Normally I would expect that from a Snapdragon device, but the Snapdragon variant's BL is locked. How come Exynos got so much dev support and ROMs with practically no issues on this device (and some other like the Galaxy S6)? From what I've heard in the past, the Exynos phones aren't exactly the most dev-friendly ones. What has changed since? I may be completely wrong though
That's all for now.
Thanks in advance!

You need to flash TWRP custom recovery (Instructions in the TWRP thread)
Unlocking the bootloader is a simple toggle switch in developer options

Always a risk, make sure to read up thoroughly before flashing anything

Once KNOX is tripped that's permanent, but you can return to stock using ODIN and a stock ROM from sammobile or other sources scattered around the forum

So, to unlock the bootloader, I literally have to toggle "Enable OEM unlock" in developer options? That's it? I'll have this switch regardless if I'm on Marshmallow or Nougat, right?

Correct
Don't make the same mistake a few members have, and disabled it once they had TWRP installed, you need to leave it unlocked while you are running custom

I've never wanted to try this, but I'm curious. What happens if you toggle it back? Bricks the phone?

It gets stuck trying to boot with custom binary blocked errors iirc
Then you need to spend time working out how to bypass the lock and reflash stock etc
If i was you then i would keep the s7 with the stock rom because this stock rom is pretty awesome and i like having the secure folder functions etc.

Has anyone thought that maybe google has made 2.3 unrootable? Scary thought i know, but its kind of like a cat and mouse game with the developers and google/manufacturers with root patches.
Maybe google finally will put the nail in the coffin here?
WOOT. It's rooted, im happily wrong.
It's a developer phone, so why would Google want to make devs waste time trying to root.
could it be possible that Google enable root access by default, then?

Definately not.
Dev phones have always been rootable, i doubt that will change.
The phones that have trouble being rooted are always manufacture customized ones.
it's still able to fastboot oem unlock from what i've heard. Will be rooted same day it's available for purchase guaranteed.

I'd bet that it will be rooted BEFORE!
The developer build on my Nexus One is already rooted. I don't imagine the release build will be any different from all of the previous OTAs.

You are correct.
Samsung never locked their (Android?) phones. Personally I've installed custom ROMs on the Galaxy Spica and international S and both came factory unlocked. Unlike with some of HTC's devices you can flash anything you want without using exploits.

Your right, as of now I don't think Samsung locked any of their phones, but the only thing Samsung has on this phone is the hardware aspect. All the software aspect is by Google.

Then how do you explain threads like this (on the samsung galaxy sub forums):
[HOWTO] [REF] [FAQ] [Guides] [Tutorials] Flash/Root/ADB/ROM [MUST READ!]
It seems like you have carrier/sim lock and root confused. Just like nearly every phone on the market, they are locked. You will also need root to do anything that says "please root your phone". They do not ship this way...
I'm sure it will be rootable... Google doesn't want to block out developers
Just food for thought i guess, we cant know until its released anyways.
What exactly is fastboot oem unlock ?

that's unlocked for carriers with gsm...that's not root. Simply meaning it will work with at&t or tmobile by changing the sim card. Root lets you edit system files and a custom recovery to flash roms
Lmao no one so far in this thread should get one of these developer phones as you plainly do not understand what you are doing here when it comes to deciding what the difference is between root permissions and unlocked to all networks.
lets put it this way, if you are one of the above who are having trouble, dream on and steer clear from the prospects of rooting all together
unless that is you fancy yourself a very expensive paperweight?

This command unlocks your bootloader on the N1/N-S allowing you to flash custom roms, but visibly voids your warranty (bootloader screen shows that it's unlocked)

Ok. SO how do i know if it´s unlocked? Because i bought this s6 used....
The problem is the Verizon S6 family is currently unable to have modified bootloader files as no one has found a way to change them with or without tripping Knox, the security suite on our phones. Hell, everything updated past Firmware update OF1 isn't even rooted yet and no one is sure when or if we will even have one. Basically what I'm saying is, there is no way for you to get the international ROM onto your phone unless you just happened to either crack the system yourself or the person you got it from managed to find a way without telling the world about it.
Word of advice, you can have a phone that is rooted with a flashed ROM but still have a locked bootloader. In our case it was due to an exploit that was patched.

Hi Guys!
The S7 ( Exynos 8890 variant ) is my first Samsung Device and while it works really well I'm just not sure on how to Unlock the Bootloader. With my previous Sony Devices you can just visit Sony's website and get done with it but after asking some friends they told me to just enable the OEM Unlock button. Is enabling gonna let me flash custom ROMs / recoveries and custom kernels? They also told me to be careful about flashing custom bootloaders (?)
If someone can just kindly explain on what this is or how will I unlock the bootloader it would be really appreciated
Thanks alot!!

Hi Mate
To OEM unlock is very easy on the exynos models . only the Qualcomm ( US variant) is kind of tricky in our model is allow to do it with the click of a button , you have to:
Go to Settings / About device / Software info / Tap 7 times on Build number to enable Developer
Once developer options are enable ( you will see it under Settings) enter there you will see the option OEM Enable, if you are planing to root or flash any custom rom or recovery you need to enable it , flashing with out enabling this option is risky
Flashing is always risky but if you follow the instructions should no be a problem

Isnt there the knox varranty flag, too? As it was there on earlier devices, it should be present on s7.
Root with 0x0 would be nice, but impossible, or? My s5 is not root friendly and I dont wanna lose my 0x0 state... So our S7 has also this behaviour of triggering the knox flag, I guess.
Bad times for having root on sammies phones...

Sorry to resurrect a dead thread, but I'm having a weird issue. So, I got my S7 a few days ago used, and discovered that the previous owner had already tripped Knox so I figured I might as well root to have all the various benefits. Well, I got a bit too impatient and rushed through the procedure I was reading, so I ended up rooting without changing the OEM Unlock option in Developer Options. Root was still successful and I have SuperSU installed and a few other root apps installed, all working fine. But once I realized I hadn't enabled OEM Unlock, I figured I would just go back into settings and change it.....except it's not there. The option is simply gone from Developer Options, even though I KNOW I saw it in there sometime before rooting.
Can anyone help me? I want to flash TWRP but I'm afraid to do so without having checked that option, and I don't understand why it disappeared from the menu!
Guys,
A quick question. Did anyone try flashing AOSP based roms on this device? I do a research before purchasing it. I love Lineage OS and wondering if this Exynos model works well with it.

OEM Unlock Greyed out
My OEM unlock setting under developers options is greyed out. I think it might be because of the motherboard replacement i got. Anyway to fix it?

My dad's S7 edge had this issue when I was trying to flash lineage OS on it for him. I re-flashed the original firmware (Had a HK version but phone was repaired once in the US) and using odin and that fixed it for him at least. Not sure if it was a different firmware issue or just some bug.
Has anyone found a successful working root methods for the SM-G955u samsung Galaxy s8 plus I do not have twrp or anything everything is stock. Computer access is very limited . OEM unlock option is not an option under developer options. I would really like to be able to find away to get twrp on my device . I'm some what a neutral at flashing zips through a recovery and flashing through odin. I know how to do it all i just haven't been able to find the correct files to root or unlock my bootloader. I don't wanna brick my phone so I'm being very cautious. Anyone able to help?

I haven't messed with Snapdragon, but what I'm trying to ask is if you have read the Snapdragon how to root, etc?
If you have, and followed the method/s correctly, and the crom service is closing down, I'd suspect something was mux'ed during the initial flashes/installs.

Gotcha. Good idea, and I believe others have done just what you are considering.
You can't install TWRP on the g955u. It's only for the Chinese and the HK variant with the snapdragon.
Snapdragon ONLY.
In NO way it is compatible with Exynos variants including but not limited to International (F/FD), Korean (N), Exynos LDU (X) variants.
Note that this does NOT unlock your phone. You need to have an unlockable variant such as Chinese or HK to flash.

If you want to root you would need this but there's no TWRP. And be careful, the next bootloader may block out of region firmware.
It makes no sense how the unlocked Variants can't unlock the bl since they're open to all carriers. This " carriers or OEM lock it down" is a gimmick
I had the same problem with being on Bootloader 2 trying tho flash stuff. Able to finally to get it to work with the instructions here if you're not on the bootloader 1.

Hey folks,
I am new to the rooting scene and was hoping someone could give me some guidance on how to properly root my S7 model G930VL. I've read people say that the bootloader cannot be unlocked while others said it can by simply turning on OEM unlock? Do I really have to flash another firmware in order to root and if so, how would I do that?
Thank you for your time.

all the VLs ive seen use safestrap (i have a G900VL and its the same issue). Ive tried flashing so many different versions of S5 firmware that its becoming hopeless. yep and yep. you might have to contend with the 168 hour thing, but other than that it should be a cakewalk. The 168 hour thing is where the bootloader toggle wont switch unless you let it sit powered on for 168 hours. I.E., just dont reboot it for 7 days then toggle the unlock
