Hi,
I am looking into buying a S6 or S7 for my wife. I know the S7 is the newer version (duh) but future proofing also means having access to newer Android Versions. Afaik nougat is the last android update the S6 will receive while I am guessing that the S7 will also get Android O. That would leave me with installing a custom rom (on the S6) when O comes out. I tried having a look at the forums but I am not sure: Is it correct to say that the S7 is the better phone when it comes to custom roms?
Thanks for the help!
I have an S6 and Exynos = no custom/Aosp roms. I know they are very early stages of Aosp because Exynos will not release the source code. So getting a working version of Android O before it is officially released for S6 is a lot of work to get stable. I cant see that happening.
I have ordered my S7 but dont have any experience at the moment with it. I have seen AOSP on the S7 so that means there is a lot of development going on. Which for me is key when buying a new phone. Exchange, contribute, share and improve info.
So short answer is YES
LineageOS is out for both phones, but i'll bet some stuff still doesn't work. I would opt for the s7 mainly due to the bigger battery.

We all know that most android phone get supported for 18 month thats a year and a half making your devices almost getting to major updates , so our note 3 original came with 4.3 jellybean and receive (update 1) which is 4.4.2 kit-kat and will receive (update 2) which is 5.0 lollipop am talking about touchwiz am sure there will be newer rom but aosp based stock , we all saw early build of lollipop update in (note 3 9005) and seems also the exynos version may get it also ,
so this thread is about answering these questions?
do you think that samsung may keep supporting our note 3 after 5.0 lollipop released ?
are there going to be developers that can port next touchwiz android which is 6.0 or android m or newer than that ?
what do you feel about knowing that your device never supported ?
Most likely not. They're in the business to sell hardware not keep old hardware running.
I'm sure but by time 6.0, M or whatever comes out the Note 5 or 6 will most likely be out.
Doesn't matter. Technology advances, but when I had the original galaxy there were roms with the latest OS. from devs. It all goes back to...Samsung is in the business to sell hardware not OS updates.
Even if they do, by the time a new Android is released, I'll most likely have bought a new phone.
It will continue to get small upgrades, but it will not get any more major ones.
This is nothing new.
As long as there aosp roms i'm happy
touchwiz are the best

i prefer touchwiz based
What is bothering you so much? even it hasnt received 5.0 and who can tell what will be the next.
Samsung cant even answer your question bcoz this is ridiculous.
What can you do if 5.0 is the last update for Note 3?
This is wasting time.

1-what bothering me is that maybe newer features supported by a new version of android our note 3 not supported yet and i know we will never get that features ported to our note 3 so will be developers who can port a full android version like s3 which get kit-kat ported to international i9300 custom based rom.
2-i just try to guess maybe newer android is going to be android m or what ever will be
3-i don't care about there answer nor i asking them i ask developers here and owners of note 3 like me
4-emmm i will just stick to 5.0 and when new os came and my note never supported i think i will just came hear to see if they can do something like s3 done
Note 3 still kicks butt. I'll look forward to 5.0.
actually

Hi,
I have some very basic questions about using a custom ROM in general, and on the Galaxy S6 more specifically. My old phone died today (Nexus 4) and I thought about getting the S6 now.
The problem is, I hate TouchWiz. I only really like Stock Android, which is why I got a Nexus in the first place. However, since I don't like the newest iteration of the Nexus (Nexus 6), I thought about getting the Galaxy S6 (because the hardware is great) and then switch to a custom ROM.
Since I've never done that (never even rooted my phone before), I just wanted to know the following things:
- Is it easy to put a custom ROM on the Galaxy S6?
- Are there custom ROMs for the Galaxy S6 that resemble Stock Android and still make use of its unique hardware features (eg fingerprint reader, camera features,...)
- I've heard some things about CyanogenMod, is it any good? Is it available for the S6 and is it updated frequently by the developers? If so, once the custom ROM is on the phone, will you get updates over the air?
- Will CyanogenMod for example also be updated to the newest Android versions (like 5.1.1 currently)? By this I mean, do the developers of CyanogenMod incorporate security and performance fixes made by Google?
- For how long can I expect updates for this custom ROM, for the Galaxy S6?
Thanks in advance!

Yes it is easy, if you take your time to read. CF-root>Odin>flash>rooted
yes there are for now 2 available roms thats are debloated and pretty much stock with some extra features
Cyanogenmod is probably the most common roms on every phonebrand i think
No its not available for S6 at the moment. And yes there are stable versions and nightlies , the last named is updated pretty much every day. As long as the Devs think there should be any updates =) hope i helped you
Just as a heads up you will find that some aosp roms will have trouble with this device due to the chip that is in it. Samsung doesn't offer any real documentation in the chip and lied to developers a while ago when they said they would. If you look back on older devices with the chip there are things that get broken. Your best bet would be a deflated touch Wiz rom.
I wanted to get the Samsung Galaxy s6 edge as it has the best camera, and the best display and the best processor and an amazing form factor that appealed to me, but I noticed no Cyanogenmod 12 roms are available for the Note edge, but there is cm12 roms for the Note 4. Does this mean the Samsung Galaxy s6 edge will not have custom rom support as well? The g4 is coming out today, and though it will most probably beat the s6 in camera performance, the other features would give the Samsung Galaxy s6 edge an edge over the G4. Please help me decide whether to buy the s6 edge( which I will definitely go for if custom roms are developed for it) or the G4(which is comparable to the s6, but doesnt appeal to me as the s6 edge). Any information is welcome.

Well generally it takes a while for ROMs to come out for a device and since the S6 edge is a newer phone there won't be any ROMs available for it. Now there most likely will be ROMs for it in the future but you never no for certain. So I would get the S6 edge if you think it would be better for you. Though the G4 would probley be a good choice as well though there isn't much info on it as of yet.

I didn't expect to find ROMs for the Samsung Galaxy s6 edge yet as it is a very new device. However, I was a bit skeptical about whether the edge functionality would prevent or discourage developers to make custom ROMs, so I looked up if they had a cm12 ROM for the Note Edge, which was released around 6 months back. I was disappointed to find none whatsoever available. Now this is making me confused about whether the edge in Samsung Galaxy s6 edge would prevent developers to do the same. I'd have to go for the Galaxy s6 or the g4 if they don't develop Roms for the edge version.

Well if that's the case I would go with the G4 because it would surely be a good phone.

I'm interested in buying this phone, and I've already noticed that exynos version is more supported by devs here and in overall it's better. But my problem is, what is the codenumber of the exynos version, not sure if I call it properly but I'm talking about this SM - T310 thing for example. I just couldn't find it anywhere... And my question is which one is for which phone, or if it's country specified, then can someone tell me how can I get the better version?
Sm-g930f is international, sm-g930w8 is canadian exynos.
Sm-g930a 930t 930v 930s 930u is att/tmo/verizon/sprint/carrier unlocked snapdragon.

I bought my exynos S7 from them. Very reputable, fast delivery and excellent price. I would not recommend getting the snapdragon. The root for it is very buggy and there is no support from developers because the bootloader is locked and will likely never be unlocked. I have my S7 rooted with VoLTE, WiFi calling and unlimited tether. To answer your question, it's the SM-G930F. The G935F is the S7 Edge.

The thing for me is that I live outside the US so when all the taxes and duties that are coming together make the price $300 higher, and yeah i just noticed that Samsung with the snapdragon one is just lonely and noone cares about him heh Thanks a lot too
I own the exynos and it has root and comes with an unlocked bootloader but the roms for the exynos aren't that great because all of the devs are bored with with exynos and their sh*t because it's very hard to develop things for exynos Samsung are very closed with the code, and the snapdragon comes with a locked bootloader, but if it ever does get unlocked the Roms for it will be very nice and not just a modified TouchWiz. If you plan on instantly rooting then get the exynos, but there aren't any stable AOSP Roms for it and probably never will.

The exynos source code was released not long ago. So there will be support. Superman ROM is awesome and very stable. Also, I read somewhere that Lineage OS is in the works for S7.

Works and being stable-very different things.
If you want more info read this https://www.xda-developers.com/samsung-exynos-and-aosp-explained-a-story-of-betrayal/
And a quote from the linked post: "There’s no future. Almost all devs have stopped working on exynos devices a long time ago. Most of them even stopped to work on samsung devices in general.
...
They simply don’t care about the community. All they care about is $$$"
Most of the devs only care about money NOT ALL. Some are creating Roms for fun tho

I respectfully disagree Sir. You are correct that there has been very little support as far as roms go, however that is due to Samsung holding onto the source for the kernel. It has just been released within the last couple months. I guess is comes down to opinion partially. I love the S7 because it's hardware is superior to that of other devices and TouchWiz is actually very nice imho. Also, I can't live without SD card. >_< I would buy a OnePlus or Pixel if they had SD card.

I guess that the fact that I hate TouchWiz makes me disagree and there are no good stable Roms and like you said there is Lineage and also there's Resurucction Remix but last time I checked out the Ressurction Remix even the camera doesn't work and Lineage is also before even an alpha stage from what I know the rom doesn't even have download links yet.
Exynos is proven to be a better chip over snapdragon
Our trusty ol s7 got its updates to November security patch today. Nothing new that I've noticed, still on the old UX but I guess it's better than nothing. I heard the J7 from 2016 is now on UX 8.5, the same as the note 8 and 7.1.1? Oh well my next phone might be the mate 10 or an iPhone 8, still deciding but it won't be until next year.
Has anyone else thought of leaving Samsung and going to a different maker, I will but will keep the s7 edge, for gear VR.
Yeah I bought my two daughters the J7 and it pisses me off to see them with the new updates since Aug and we still lagging behind. This phone is only a little over a year old. Wonder why we don't get any love.

Nope. The phone works well and I have more important things to do than complain about a minor revision of Android that this phone is not currently on. I do find it funny that we now get virtually monthly security updates, and people still find something to complain about.
For the record, I have seen that this phone will make the jump straight to Android 8.0, skipping 7.1. That J7 that's on 7.1 is going to be stuck there.
This is the first Galaxy I have that I didn't root and put a custom rom on. Usually the phone runs like garbage from all the bloat warehouse but this phone has been solid stock

Besides the fact that if you have a US variant, you can't flash custom ROMS anyway. All US variants (S7 and S7 Edge) have locked bootloader, which prevents flashing of custom roms. Mine had started to lag a little from LookOut, etc. so I rooted it, and then just used Kernel Adiutor to set the governors correctly to eliminate the ENG bootloader lag issue.
