Hello,
I did some searching before posting this and have come up with little results that are working for me. I have been able to change my stock icon apps using the method on androidcentral (sorry, can not post links yet). However, trying the same thing with Free Market Apps, I have been unsuccessful.
I am able to get the com.*.*.apk file off of my phone, and can extract the res folder, but after editing and pushing the file back onto the phone, the application is "uninstalled." I believe that I have to sign the apk file again, which I've tried doing with no success.
What I do not understand, is the app Bettercut has the ability to change these Market App Icons, so I thought we should be able to do so as well. If anyone has any knowledge of how to do this, I would greatly appreciate it.

Change your graphics. Uninstall the app from your phone, put the edited .apk on your sd card and install it with astro (or another app that installs apk files). If you update from market you'll lose customizations.

Yeah, I tried that, but I keep getting unable to install. I do have non-market apps checked, but still no luck. I'm basically just editing the graphic from the com.*.*.apk file, opeing the com.*.*.apk file with 7zip, placing the new graphic in the res/drawable folder, closing 7zip, then I put the com.*.*.apk file onto my SD card (after uninstalling original app) then use astro to install. Doing this is not working. I thought I might have to sign the apk file, rename it or something. Not really sure at this point.

I got it to work by pushing the .apks back through adb and not using a File Manager. I changed a bunch of my Market icons without any problem. No fc's or install failures.
So say for example you were to change the Market Icon for Spare Parts. I assume you did the following:
Pulled com.androidapps.spare_parts.apk from /data/app
Edited the app_icon.png file within the res/drawable folder
Uninstalled Spare Parts
Pushed com.androidapps.spare_parts.apk back to /data/app
Or did you do it differently?

I never uninstalled the apk. I just drug a copy of the .apk to my computer, edited the image, and then pushed it back over the original one. Im in no way any kind of expert, but it worked when I did it.
Hmm. So are you going into /data/app and pulling the com.androidapps.spare_parts.apk (for example), editing, then pushing back w/ out signing or anything? I assume you are pushing back the same file, name exactly the same and everything.
So for example you would have pulled com.androidapps.spare_parts.apk from /data/app, edited the png within the apk file, then pushed com.androidapps.spare_parts.apk back to /data/app and it worked?
No rebooting, signing or anything?
I'm using Fresh 1.1 with MCK and again, do not have SD card partitioned for apps2sd yet.

Yep, that's what I did. No updating, signing, nothin. I did reboot after I was all done. And I dont mess around with that apps2sd business either. So it should be the same.

Wow that worked pretty nicely! I was trying to change the little slide bar that moves as you change screens. I kept upzipping the file and modifying it, then rezipping and trying to reinstall. 7zip lets you modify the .apk with out opening it up...glad this subject came up and you answered this!
Ok. Step by step here is what I did just now:
1. adb pull /data/app/com.androidapps.spare_parts.apk C:\Users\Chris\Desktop
2. Used 7zip to open the apk file.
3. Moved my app_icon.png file into the res/drawable folder and overwrote the current one
4. adb push C:\Users\Chris\Desktop\com.androidapps.spare_parts.apk /data/app/
5. adb shell
6. reboot
Doing this did not work. It only made the icon on my home screen for Spare Parts go away, and the app is no longer listed as being installed. I can still see the file in my /data/app/ directory, but it is not installed or showing up anywhere.
Any ideas?

Try pulling the original icon and editing it. Just make it a solid black square. Then put it back in and push to the phone. Sounds like your new icon changes the filesize enough that it needs resigned.

I uninstalled (inadvertently) the system application DMClient on my ASUS Transformer.
I would like to re-install. How to.
I have a backup of this System Application (com.asus.dm.apk) but it doesn't want to install.

Once done put the file (com.asus.dm.apk) in the platform-tools folder
and run command

adb push <application_name>.apk /system/app
you could also try manually moving the file with Root explorer or any file management with root access to system/app to see if that work
The file com.asus.dm.apk is already on system/app but the application DMClient doesn't appear ine the Application list
Try this, not sure if it will work or not.
Navigate to where you have the app (system/app in this case)
long press on it to bring up the menu
choose "permission" and set to rw,r,r if not already set to that
now tap on it again to install the app
also when you say it's not showing up in Application list.
Are you refering to the app drawer? Cause it will not show up there.
You can find it in Settings>Applications>Manage application>All (if it's installed correctly)
I'm rooted. I have uninstalled it with UltimateBackup.
DMClient is (was) a ROM application.
I have tried to restaure it with Titanium Backup, then with Ultimate Backup without success (the restore process begin but never end).
I'm very dispointed because without this application, i can't access to OTA Firmware updates.

Flashing with a new firmware seems to be an heavy solution for only one file missing.
In system/app, i have DMClient.ODEX and com.asus.dm.apk instead of having DMClient.ODEX and DMClient.apk
If not, what else is done under the covers?

Some .Apk's can be placed in system/data/app while others can't , make sure the .apk you're trying to place in system/data/app is supported or you may end up restoring your device. if the apk can run from the system /data/app then yes with the right permissions ...
Apk's from the market will give you detailed info from the apk like permission needed , supported devices ect, even the developers contact info ( in other word they are approved by Google.
while "sideloaded" apk or web apk (not coming from Google) are pirates apk,modified apk ect. who knows what permissions it needs or what info you are sharing with whoever modified the apk...
So be careful what you get into your device and where is placed on your device

Simply placing the apk into the correct folder is not enough. You will also need to set the permissions to the same as the other apps in that folder (I can't remember the permissions off the top of my head). This can easily be done using Root explorer, or using an adb shell and the chmod command.
Play Store installs and sideloaded installs achieve the same result, however you will want to be careful where you download apk files from. Apps from the Play Store are less likely to be malicious in nature, and , of course, you should never be pirating paid apps.
Adb push would not be enough as you would still need to set permissions. Unless you are installing a system app, it is better just to use adb install.

Are you saying the "adb push" will only copy file into the target location but "adb install" will copy the file into the target location AND also set the proper permission for you?
With all of the usual warnings about the source/safety of "side-loaded" apps aside. . .
I simply put the .apk file onto the SD card (anywhere), and then use a file manager like Astro to "open" it (root access not required). You will be prompted to see if you really wanted to install the app. Then let Android do its thing. The app will be installed where it belongs, with all the permissions it needs.
For this to work, you must first tell the device to allow installation of apps from unknown sources. Go to Settings | Security, and check Unknown Sources.
It took me a while to figure out that the bast**ds had built in the malware in the firmware, with the launcher. Phone is rooted, and I have changed the launcher. But I can't delete the malware apks inside system/app.
They are named as com.google.hardware.ext0.apk, and another similarly named (android air, and measure too)..
Problem is, I can't delete them, I tried using ES File Explorer (yes, root is enabled. I can delete, change other files in system/app but for this) I am denied permission!!
Then I tried the terminal emulator.. after getting SU.. tried deleting them using RM and then 'busybox rm..' both failed. What to do? How to delete the f****ng malware files??
(If I switch on the WiFi, malware automatically downloads more crap, then I can't even switch off Wifi and Data! Hence I formatted the phone and have not entered any sim or wifi settings... but I can't delete the damn files!! Any suggestions please?? Going crazy here)

If you could install a custom recovery to flash a zip that delete this app...
Try a Root System App Deleter or, boot in recovery mode and remove it via ADB

There is a way to find the .apk of apps downloaded from playstore. ull need root and root browser, we will use here esfile explorer. open esfile explorer and press top left-->tools enable root explorer and show hidden files, then go to local-->device now go to file data-->app and thats it, to find system apps u can go to device-->system-->app.

There is no need of a rooted device,
you can pull the apk by using following techniques.

A) Using ADB
1) Determine the package name of the app, e.g. "com.whatsapp" (WhatsApp).
if you don't know the package name, you have 2 options to get the package name
i) Visit play store and search for the desired application, The link of the app contains the package name. "https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.whatsapp" (WhatsApp) where com.whatsapp is the package name
ii) use command "adb shell pm list packages" , this will list the package name of all application installed.
2) Once you know the package name, get the apk installed path by using command "adb shell pm path com.whatsapp"
it will return the apk path of the application, like this
package:/data/app/com.whatsapp-2/base.apk
3) Now to pull apk, by using command "adb pull /data/app/com.whatsapp-2/base.apk"
Apk will be extracted to the same folder where adb is present

B) Using ESFileExplorer
1) Open ESFileExplorer and navigate to User Apps either by (swiping left to right twice) or (goto APP under Library in Navigation Drawer)
2) Select App you want to pull, and click on Share.

ur right however, not all system apps are present using the second way, and first way is complicated for some people and might confuse them. if someone would want to change something he saw on google, that is connected to system apps or other stuff"like systemui" i think rooting and copying the apk from its directory is best. btw thanks for ur concern about this, believe it or not for the first 7 month i posted this it posted in android wear, and no one was commenting, i made it with the xda app, i think it has alot of bugs.

IMO, if one is able to root the phone, then he will certainly not find any complication in pulling apk using first way.

u might be right bro but rooting is only downloading a file and flashing it through odin.
