I was hoping a few people here could do a quick test for me. On my watch (Gear S3 Frontier non-LTE), I have noticed a difference in the dimming depending on the brightness set.
Basically, if you set a brightness level of 1 OR 2, and turn always-on display ON, I have noticed that when the always-on kicks in, the watch also significantly dims itself.
As soon as you set a brightness level of 3 or higher, the always-on display kicks in but does not dim itself at all.
Can anyone else try this and let me know if you get the same results? Basically, does your always on get significantly dimmer when using the 1 or 2 brightness level, and does your always-on seem to not dim at all after switching the brightness to 3 or higher?

Yea that happens: https://forum.xda-developers.com/gear-s3/help/automatic-low-brightness-t3540063 . I never set my brightness to 1 or 2 tho. I always keep it at 5. So not sure about that.

I'm not talking about the auto-low brightness. This happens whether or not this setting is on, for me at least.

my suggestion is to keep brightness at 3-4-5 and then install the app "theater mode". When you're inside and don't need too much brightness just tap on the Theater Mode widget so the whole thing gets dim. When you're out tap it again, and the watch goes back to the brightness (3-4-5 depending on what you set).

Has anyone else noticed that the auto brightness is really dark? Especially when compared to my s3 set to auto. Or do I have a messed up tablet?

No auto brightness sucks. You shouldn't use it anyway because it eats battery.

How autobrightness works on the magnificent SGN 10.1:
1. Autobrightness ON: when You adjust the slider now You set the minimum brightness that the SGN 10.1 has to achieve. It will never get darker than the adjusted brightness level
2. Autobrightness OFF: set the wished brightness with the slider
It is genious that brightness can be adjusted within one tap ..........

Wow, thanks! This was my one gripe - that autobrightness was too dark in lowlight settings. I had resorted to manually setting brightness, but this is superb! Thanks again.
I don't understand this. Once you click the auto brightness box after doing this it's still too dark. With the box unchecked it does not auto adjust.

Well if you have the box checked you can adjust the lowest allowed brightness with the slider, just try it out in a dark room - Check the box and drag the slider.
With the box unchecked you have to manually adjust the brightness with the slider.

I understand that but with the box checked and level right up its way too dull and althpugh it adjusts automatically, every adjustment it makes is too dull.
Autobrightness drains your battery anyway. Just set your brightness manually. What is it, like 2 clicks?

Chill out bro, auto brightness is the bomb son. More so for phone than tab, but still I find auto on my note 10.1 to be total ****, it's always adjusting itself..to the point where I'm almost having an epileptic fit. I'm now forced to use manual as you suggested. 2 effing clicks, this is an outrage it's 20-12.

Don't be going all gangsta on my autobrightness comment yo. I just set me brightness and roll wit it. For serious auto brightness on dis rig is whack. Heard.

Auto-brightness is my only major complaint about this tablet. I have always set my Android phones to Auto and works great. This device it goes as dim as possible & never gets brighter.

Mine definitely does not work like this. I uncheck Auto and set my slider to Max brightness. The screen gets really bright. I then check the Auto box again and the screen goes back to too dim for my current conditions. The slider still shows Max (all the way to the right), though.
Anyway, I don't think working this way would be good, even if it worked. If I set the minimum brightness for where I want it when I'm bed, reading, and all the lights are off, it still won't be bright enough if I'm sitting on the couch, in the afternoon, with just light coming in the windows.
It needs a way to set an Auto Brightness offset or pad value, so you can tell it, for example, make the brightness always be 10 higher than what you would normally set it to.
Auto brightness is seriously off base on this device. Even set to totally bright and auto, it them dims it to an unusable point. Good thing I never use auto anyway.

Seems to work only on the intl 8010 models, not on 8013s. Ive had both, and thats been my experience. Definitely a major improvement on the 8010 and the way autobrightness should work (allow user to set minimum, then scale up from there).

I'm really not getting this. Someone said to check the box and then adjust the slider. Well, the slider doesn't move once I check the box.
When I check the box and then adjust the slider the check in the box goes away.
I can't even do that. The slider doesn't move with the box checked. I have to uncheck the box to move the slider, so I don't understand how this works at all.
I wish auto brightness worked. I prefer to use it on my other devices. Samsung really screwed the pooch. I hope there's a fix. I wonder if they even realize it's broke.

It feels like im wasting battery having the screen so bright at night unless i turn it down, then I have to turn it up again in the morning.. Some secret setting?

Same here, Someone said that the screen does dim but it does so slowly so you barely notice it! Hoever iam not convinced! Iam almost certain mine is not adjusting at all
For normal day light conditions i feel the auto brightness adjusts very well. Its definitely better than the s4 i had. I have the auto brightness selected and the bar at 50%. I agree for night time reading i have to manually adjust the brightness may be its not as quick to adjust in very low light conditions compared to day light
I was using CM11 on the S4 which had very good brightness control, not sure about standard. I agree during the day I don't have problems at all, and the screen is very good. It's just when I'm somewhere with low brightness and I have to turn it down, and then when I go back into day I have to turn it back up again. Pretty annoying having to change it all the time.
I will get an app to do it for me for now, but this must be some sort of bug this action couldn't be on purpose.

I find the auto brightness not very good.
Sometimes when the lighting condition does not change, it will start to increase/decrease the brightness to the level which does not suit the lighting condition.
It also have the tendency to favor lower brightness.
Thinking of trying out Lux Auto Brightness instead.

I don't know if you mean to test the sensor, but the sensor works absolutely fine (with other apps)
My auto brightness works just fine and i have mine on lowest possible setting.

Is it normal when this phone is on auto brightness and direct sun hits it, it makes the screen horribly saturated?
The colours look terrible, almost fluorescent.
I've had lots of Galaxy flagship phones before and never noticed this.

Change display mode under Settings > Display from adaptive to anything else. That's how it works now.

No, that is just the inbuilt Brightness booster going on. When hit with direct sunlight, If you phone is on auto brightness or set to maximum brightness, the display will change contrast and colour + boost the brightness to near 700 nits so that you can easily read it.

I've never had my phone display set on Adaptive. It's always on Basic display mode and it still does it.
Has anyone else had issues with their Adaptive Brightness not working. Toggling the setting has no effect on my display. For such an expensive phone I expect things like this to work.
Yes, it doesn't work that great for me either. I mean I can see it adjusts the brightness "somewhat". But it appears it is not nearly as dramatic as on my Galaxy S7 which would pretty much perfectly adjust the brightness.
I agree that a phone this expensive should do it correctly out of the box. Google please listen.
This is the intended function as I understood it, so I googled it and here confirms. This is not intended to operate the same as auto brightness many other phones use.
In Android L, Google's introduced a new feature called Adaptive Brightness that combines manual and auto brightness. You can manually adjust the brightness level to a state you like. Once it's set, your screen will adjust based on ambient light so it stays at the same brightness relative to the light around you. This way you can set the screen to your preferences without sticking to an absolute level.

The problem I have is that every time the phone is rebooted, adaptive brightness is set back to Off, even though it was On when the phone was restarted. Running NDE63V and not rooted.
I understand that the P7P is supposed to have a brighter screen then my retired P6P. Yesterday, I had my P7P in the car holder on a sunny day. Even at 100% brightness with adaptive brightness turned off the screen was hard to see.
Anyone else having a problem seeing the screen when outside?
Do you have adaptive brightness on or off?
In Exkm, I see a display option for High Brightness Mode (HBM) which I will try the next time.
I understand at high brightness that power consumption is also very high.
Any thoughts on seeing the screen when outside on a sunny day?

You have to turn it on, unless its max is only at 1000 nits, not 1500 like with Adaptive Brightness.
Turn the adaptive brightness on, you can get 1500nits brightness.
But it drains the battery really fast.

Just an FYI, you won't see 1,500 nits just by turning on the adaptive brightness on. Picture a screen with a white box in the middle and a black background.
Let's say that whitebox takes up 1% of the entire screen and black takes up 99%. The screen might boost that white box to 1500 nits (at maximum brightness slider). So it looks really bright.
Now let's say you expand that box and it takes up 20% of the screen and 80% is black. The screen is going to lower the brightness maybe down to 1000 nits.. even though the slider is still at 100%.
Then let's say you expand the box all the way, takes 100% of the screen, it's all white. The screen automatically lowers the brightness down to 800 nits, even though again the slider is at 100%.
The main apps that I want to see during the day while driving are Maps and Waze. Light mode seems better than Dark mode, but it was still hard to see the maps even at 100% brightness.
I use Velis Auto Brightness from PlayStore to care my screen brightness.

I would be absolutely shocked if Velis can engage "high brightness mode".
If you cannot engage "high brightness mode" by turning off auto-brightness and moving the slider bar all the way to the right, then Velis probably can't do it either.
"High brightness mode" is typically only available via stock Auto Brightness or via rooted options.
It only comes on under special circumstances and you cannot leave it at "high brightness mode" for as long as you want (without using root options).

That doesn't seem right, this screen is brighter than my pixel 6 pro at 100% and easier to read outside. HBM you mentioned doesn't seem to work with EXKM and HBM, or at least for me it doesn't, and have set all the permissions and given it root access. There is a difference but it is so tiny it might as well not be there, and my screen is 75% normal when testing.
