Recently i updated my phone to Nougat. And since then apps in "Recent Apps" have started closing themselves. I m using nova launcher prime. And last night too i observed it, before going to sleep i had 16 apps in recent apps, and when woke up there were only 6 apps showing in recent apps. And it has been happening since last few days. Not sure whether this is an issue with nova launcher or nougat?
Is anyone else facing the same issue? Is this some setting in Nougat?

App power monitor in device maintenance closing them?
I always close them manually once I've closed the app so wouldn't know if it was happening or not, don't like leaving loads of recents open in the background

I do not know what is closing apps in recent menu. Can't even find any option related to this.

Nougat does that, I don't know why. I use moto g4 plus and moto z play, the same happens in both. Android police wrote an article talking about it, but I haven't found anything solving the problem
Yes, I'm having the same annoying issue. The update just went through about 4 days ago for me and it has happened ever since then. Did you ever find a fix? I don't use nova launcher, so I think this is a nougat issue.

This is how recent apps work in Nougat. So there's no fix i guess. And yeah it would happen on nova and stock launcher as well (and most probably on every launcher). I m getting used to it now, since this is how it will work.

Thanks. It's very frustrating. I leave apps open sometimes because I want to come back to something only to discover the app has closed on its own. It is incredibly annoying.

But apps auto close if u leave ur phone inactive for a long time, which i have observed.
Some people liking this thing and some disliking.

Yes Very Frustrating
I have read that it's part of Nougat's design to close all but 7 apps in the Recent Apps list, but this has not been my experience. I have had 6 apps in the list and when I come back after a few hours, there is only two in the Recent Apps list. And yes, I had these apps "locked" and they still disappeared from the Recent Apps list. From what I've read, they did not design this to be an option, nor is there any way to disable this... yet (though I'll keep looking).
Very annoying and frustrating.
Samsung Tab S3
Any fix or workaround for this yet, even if root is required? This makes recent apps function pretty much useless - if you cannot rely on an app you're trying to get back to or open back up to be there like it should then you would be wasting time trying to get to that app using the recent apps list so might as well not even try.
Still no workaround? No mods? Come on hackers! Am I going to have to learn to hack the code from scratch & do this myself!!!??? I'm not even a programmer or hacker........ yet!
Recent update seems to have fixed my complaints. Finally.

now the fix is possible via xposed module called "Recents auto-removal override (android recents override)"

Hi guys,
Since the AOSP ICS builds I noticed that when the Phone app is not in memory it opens very slow. The next time you open it is almost instant. I thought that it would be fixed in the OTA, and even if it is a little faster it is still quite frustrating sometimes. Tried many roms/kernels and even if in some configurations it open faster, it is still slow.
Since I dont use the Phone that much, almost every time that I use it it is not in the memory and it is slow. Anyone has an idea to fix it, like a hack to make it persistent in the memory?
Thanks.
Bump. Is there a way to keep it in memory ? Maybe giving it a special permission like the launcher will help. I will take a look...

This is my only problem with ICS - I've tried a few memory management programs to see if I could keep the dialer, or contacts, persistent in memory, but nothing works. When I launch the dialer, the application 'Contacts' ('com.android.contacts', which seems to be the new ICS 'People' app) is shown as an 'active application' in my 'SystemPanel' app off the Market, and as long as that stays as an active app then the dialer usually re-launches straight away when pressed the next time, sometimes with only a small bit of lag if the screen has been of for a minute or two. When the 'contacts' app is shut down by the system, I guess when you open other apps up that need memory, the dialer lags again.
All the time, the process 'Phone' ('com.android.phone') seem to be sitting there as an 'Internal System Process' and seems to be persistent, but that alone doesn't make the dialer launch quickly, the 'contacts' app needs to be active as well.
My observations, but I am not a techie.
actually i recently read a thread here on XDA that addressed this issue. it involved a command on the terminal that allowed you to prioritize certain apps. too bad i can't seem to find that thread anymore!
found it! it involves using the Renice command. you can run it as an init.d script
or demo it out using the prioritzer apk (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1224125) kind thanks to this developer for creating the app. it works great!
all i did, was set the phone and contact app to -20 priority. it loads MUCH faster... try it and report back.
here are more links related to renice

Great, thanks for coming back on this, this sounds interesting - I'm not rooted at the moment, I will look into doing this as I think it would be worth it just to sort out this problem, as well as the other benefits. I will report back with my results!
I decided not to root in order to fix this, I've gone a different way with the dialer - exDialer has a polished looking ICS theme and I installed that to see how it would work, and it works great. It opens up consistently quicker, maybe due to the 'Keep in Memory' option that it has. I haven't had one laggy episode with it yet. Most other third party dialers don't look so good but this has a great ICS look, has smart dial, and a great call history function, and it's free (or you can donate as I did). Worth a look for anyone having similar problems.
I would still go back to the stock dialer if it worked properly, maybe a future update will solve this without having to root.
Hi guys,
an old thread, but i would like to now if there is something new about the "bug" that the Phone app opens slow if it is not in memory.
I'm new to the nexus s and running the newest skank Version.
On my Desire S the phone app opens much faster .
Cheers

One thing to keep in mind is that the Desire S has more RAM.
Mine opens up instantly however. Have you rebooted after installing the rom?
I remember on GB it was instant! On ICS it is indeed very slow. Hopefully JB fixes it...

That's funny because mine doesn't even take a second. :silly:
Same here if not in memory, i can easily notice certain lag on ics roms on my phone, when opening certain apps.
Yeah i did.
Hm Sounds like i have to live with it, or does someone have an alternative way to Set the priority for apps. The one mentioned earlier does Not work for me.

Thanks for the suggestion to try exDialer. The phone lag was really irritating me and this did the trick. With ics dark theme, it's a perfect complement to bugles beast. Hopefully this will be fixed in 4.1, but till then ...

My Nexus S (i9020a) is running on Jelly Bean, and after recently uninstalling the beta of Apex Launcher and then reinstalling the stable version, I noticed that my Power Control widget was gone.
After I noticed that, I uninstalled Apex Launcher completely (cleared data for the app first to be sure). Still, the Power Control widget was no longer available on my phone.
For the time being, I have downloaded a third-party equivalent off of the Play Store, but I'd really like to know what happened here. Has this happened to anyone else? If so, is there any way to get it back?

Nope. That's a third-party app. The stock Power Controls Widget is nowhere to be found in the app store.
Hi
I'm on the Nexus 7 and have noticed exactly the same thing. This is the stock Android Power Control Widget. It was there with stock launcher and also with Nova Beta, but with Apex, its nowhere to be found.
This just happened on my GNex as well. I figure we're suffering the same issue. Mine vanished after trying out a few 3rd party ones strangely enough. I haven't found anything yet to fix it. Rebooting after an uninstall didn't help either. Any ideas, peeps?

Lol. What the hell? I'm using Widgetsoid for the time being, but this was totally random. I tried reflashing my stock ROM, pushing the launcher via ADB. Zip. Ziltch. Nada. Wonder what could be causing it...

Perhaps a full wipe is in order... But I can live without it for now
Word. I don't really care anymore. It's more of a nuisance that I can't find out why it did.
It becomes unavailable in the widget drawer? What if you on press an empty area on the desktop and select widgets, is it in that list?

No, no longer in the list (for me anyway).
Hi,
Just my 2 cents.... I'm not sure About JB but all other ROMs the app had to be on the phones memory for the widget to even be available or on the widget list.... so perhaps whichever file the power control is in, maybe it got switched over to SD card
Or
An App that was installed moved the files that are needed for that power control widget.
I know its a stab in the dark but ...
Good luck

Go launcher ex
Replace your launcher with GO LAUNCHER EX, free on the Play Store. It is the BEST launcher by FAR. Super fast, tons of options, always free.
Thanks but no thanks
Did a factory reset and Power Control widget is back (on stock launcher), stock N7 JB.
I figured that's what I would have to do to get it back. Thanks for reporting back with a fix .

Hi,
Im running Action Launcher 3 on rooted lollipop Galaxy S5.
The problem is when I click on an app in order to run the app I have sometimes to click it several times untill it opens the app.
How do I fix it?
Man that could be sooo many different things that you'll most likely need to go through a process of elimination. Most likely it's another app causing it because AL3 is a pretty solid app and it's crazy how much a random lil app can affect your enire device's performance. Look closely at what apps you've recently installed and start removing them or freezing them if you're rooted and reboot then test after each app removal. You could try without the reboot I guess but see if you get and results.

Watch out to those running beta of Emui 5.
I have been running since first release great in the main and using home screen with app drawer.
Today YouTube had an update which caused huge issues.
Launcher was stuck in a mode of crashing and reloading, app list via app drawer would not load.
Took me some time to think the YouTube update was only thing to change since my phone worked but as I couldn't get to app list I was stumped and pondering a reset.
Then I remembered emui without app drawer puts all apps on home screen's, so I went to settings via notification/quick access and changed emui from app drawer to non app drawer, uninstalled YouTube update and then tried app drawer again and everything works.
Problem now is I lost all my layout and folders so need spend time on this.
Bigger problem is why does YouTube update cause such an issue..In didn't have a YouTube widget pinned, just app in one of the folders.
I thought days of app updates causing such issues were in the past.
Now I worry for long term stability and if other updates can do the same.
I have updated YouTube without issues. This isn't the problem.

Updated fine here no problems
OK good to know others not affected but for me it did cause the problem.
Updated and problem occurred instantly , a lot of time panicking and trying to fix phone due to travelling today and after I eventually rolled back the update the issue immediately resolved.
I'll submit bugs to YouTube and Huawei.

I'm on a Pixel 3 XL with the latest Android update (not rooted, no custom ROM, or anything like that). I am using Nova Launcher. When I try to switch to a recent app, there is a long lag time. It doesn't happen all the time, but it happens more often than not.
In the video link below, I have the "show taps" on so you can see what is going on. I clear all the recent apps. Open just 4 apps. And then try to switch to the most recent app. I tap two times, and nothing happens. But the screen is not frozen since I can still scroll through the recent apps. I tap one last time and there is still no response. And after a while, the app finally opens.
Is this a common issue on Pixels. Is there anything that can improve this? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

It's a pretty common issue with third party launchers. Try using the stock launcher to see if the issue persists

Tried it with the stock launcher and it did not happen. This is super frustrating. Pixel phones are becoming iPhones now, limiting our choice. I don't know how they haven't fixed this issue yet, despite having Android 10 out for so long.

It has to do with everything being built into the launcher now, including animations. If it makes you feel better this seems pretty much completely fixed in Android 11. Are you rooted? There is a magisk module that fixes this completely on Android 10 as well.
Edited to add: it's called quickstep switcher I believe in case you're wondering

Thanks! I'll look into it. This is the first phone I haven't rooted or had a custom ROM on, mainly because of the ease of monthly OTA updates. But now I am leaning towards rooting. I'll have to research a bit about how to deal with monthly updates while rooted.

Root it but keep the old boot image. Flash the original boot image before taking the OTA. Then download the fastboot files for the new OTA from the Android site, patch that new boot image and flash that.
Feel free to PM me anytime you need any help, I'll even patch the boot image for you if you like.
