Hi,
Huawei won't release the kernel, so developing a ROM such as LAOS i quite difficult. So no develepment yet.

Agreed, I'm not touching mine until official LOS drops. The stock rom is surprisingly good, tons of great features. Huawei did a fantastic job on this phone!

Hi. Agree about sticking with stock for now. Is there a link that describes in detail what features are on Lineage roms. I've looked around and all I find are download sites but little description of rom itself. Thanks!
My opinion is also this is the best stock rom i ever used!

I'm kind of surprised that there isn't any builds or projects going seeing as how Huawei actually released the sources. For many less than popular phones that I've had in the past, not having source codes and drivers was usually the problem. Sadly on this phone, the problem is that so very few people especially devs know about it's excellence Our best and pretty much only hope is something getting ported over from the OpenKirin projects on other Kirin powered phones.
I do agree with the others though that the stock software on this phone is very good, fast, lasts long and isn't obnoxiously skinned liked TouchWiz and LG phones. So it's not the end of the world. I do hope the Mate 10 takes of though seeing as how great the 9 was, I'm all over a 10 when it drops relatively soon!!! :fingers-crossed:

I think this is the problem, HM9 have a great stock ROM, and it is hard to devs to bring something better without compromises.
I tried Mi Mix last few days with different ROMS, and now I'm coming back to HM9 because, it is a better phone overall, the software is very fast and responsive and have little tweaks that are usefull, such as blocking internet access per app (wifi and carrier). The camera software is also very good in my opinion.
I just read that there's a new Reserrection Remix (aosp based rom) for Honor 9. It's the same Kirin 960 chipset.
From https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-9/development/rom-t3654876
Kernel GPLv2 compliant : This custom ROM, uses a stock EMUI 5.1 (B130) kernel image !
Very sad that there is no Lineage OS, even that now the kernel source is available.
I just bought a Mate 9 L29 second hand (can't take it back now) and I am very disappointed by that damn ugly (G)UI called EMUI 5.1.
I had a EMUI 4 device in the past and I made a MIUI like theme for it combining icons and existing themes. Then I had some Xiaomi devices, and MIUI really is eye candy.
Seeing the damn ugly EMUI GUI (and all those bull**** themes available) I wish I could have an AOSP or Lineage ROM for it.
The hardware is quite good. Display is OK, SoC is kinda fast and the sound system sounds nice.
So, f**** Huawei for messing up that bad regarding the look and feel of EMUI 5(.1) - I had a look at EMUI 8 - it's damn ugly too.
Shame on the Huawei product design team in that case. They had some UI designer from Apple for EMUI 5 (she quit then), and
I wonder how things could have gone so damn wrong. Have a look at pure Android, MIUI or flyme OS or even ZUI or discontinued IUNI os, that is eye candy.
EMUI makes me wanna vomit.

Well, sell it or put a different launcher on the damn thing then, that's one good thing about Android, you're always free to change it. I don't like EMUI either so I run the pixel 2 launcher on mine. As far as lineage goes, unless a developer decides to pick it up you're sol, Huawei might have released the general source to the OS but there is a lot of closed source drivers for the hardware that is not released and unless those drivers are open sourced lineage is out of the question except for the individual developer

What exactly is the problem with the camera in the kernel source released by Huawei?
And how'd you get to know about this, did anyone try to compile the kernel.... or maybe even a rom?
I might try it, but first I want to know this piece of info, to get the picture completed
You can trust me, and if you don't. Just check my profile, I've even made Android 5.1.1 for the S1
So, please give me the needed details, and I might be starting tomorrow
:EDIT:
I have had a quick look, and it looks like the Mate 9 Pro and the Honor 9 uses the exact same rear camera setup (So, both camera's on the back )

Hi All.
I went from Mate 7 to P8max and can't really notice any difference in the roms and I was upset that Mate 7 never got an update to 5.11. Very excited to get p8max to find there is no real difference. I have watched a few videos of the differences up to 5.11 and it is quite a lot like better dual sim handling, seems to gone on the p8max. It's like Huawei wiped all the good stuff and skinned the whole phone with there own crap.
What are other peoples thoughts, is there a way to remove the Huawei skinning?

I guess we are going to have to wait for some developers to jump on board, I would love this phone In a nice clean AOSP rom but I dont think that ever going to happen.
I have for the most part installed all my normal google apps and launcher to at least get it to somewhere normal for my taste (coming from nexus 6)

You should have some patience.
CyanogenMod team provided device specs for the mate 2 & the Nexus 6P will be built by Huawei, so the source code will definitely have something in common with the p8.
It should be available next week once the Nexus announcement is made.

The Nexus 6P is running snapdragon so that's not usable for us. We need at least source code from one device that's running the same cpu and similar spec in order to even start to build the device tree.

There are lots of interesting alt roms for the Mate 9. Has anyone developed (or be willing to develop) a custom rom for thr Pro? Pretty please!
The poor pro is being left behind... I realise this is largely because of limited geographic release but it's a great phone which deserves some attention. I'm not sure how ewsy/difficult it is to adapt the mate 9 custom roms for the Mate 9 pro... Or perhaps there are some Pro owner developers out there.
FYI I'm currently running LON-L29C636B225. Latest version appears to be B229.
Thanks in advance, and apologies if I missed something on this that has been posted already.

No. I have asked on threads if a mate 9 rom would work on mate 9 pro and generally got a response of no or 'not sure'. Given that the correct region also seems to be important to make these roms work, I really didn't want to risk flashing a mate 9 image on my mate 9 pro in case of bricking. The twrp I flashed is also different from the standard mate 9 version.
I saw that KangVip build a rom for Mate9/pro...

Isn't it just a different screen size/resolution? That shouldn't be a problem software size. I would imagine.

you should know that huawei phones will never have many if any custom roms. the few that have custom roms like the honor 8/P9 are loosing interest from the few devs that are trying to build roms. oreo might fix that but like i said, devs are loosing interest fast.
im waiting to see the pixel 2 and the LG v30. those will have great hardware and will have a huge custom rom support. never again huawei!

Based on your response, why did YOU yourself even bother purchasing a Huawei device when you knew that rom development was going to lack?
I already knew for months before purchasing mine that ROM development was going to be small or basically non existent and I've been a ROM flasher for many many years, this is the first device I've ever own that I didn't have to root or even flash a ROM, seems you're pretty much unsatisfied because you can't flash any custom ROMs compared to other devices

my only huawei devices have been the mate 7 which i bought brand new and a gifted bartered honor 5x and honor 8. i got rid 2 of them as soon as i could. the honor 5x is the only one i still have due to it having a snapdragon soc and a big custom rom selection.
had someone warned me about the mate 7 i would have not bought it but lesson learned. as i have stated many times, huawei hardware is great but their software is complete ****! thankfully huawei is becoming less popular on xda due to them going back on their word about providing major updates for 2 years.
to each their own i guess. you can stick with your huawei devices but most will never take hauwei serious for good reasons. LG v30 FTW!!!

Little bit of V30 fanboyism there?
EMUI 5.0 has never been a hiccup for me it's infact the best UI I have experienced so far alot better than 4.0.
Sucks to be you, should've done the research if you knew what you were getting yourself into but you learned it the hard way, but each to their own.
I rather have a device that rarely anyone knows about VS a phone or a brand that everyone knows, have fun with your V30, cuz I'm pretty content where I'm at, no need to go batsh** over what ROM has marginally better battery life or what kernel provided better performance or signal strength with modem files. TBH at least some credibility is due for them for actually polishing up EMUI, if they didn't care this brand wouldn't get far ?

Great - I didn't know about this one! The only challenge for me is the Chinese forum. I know I can google transalte but it is still a bit of a struggle - especiall;y to post questions etc.
I was hoping that some of the custom versions for the Mate 9 could easily be adapted for the Pro. I guess the Pro is a mainly Chinese audience. Depsite these ROMs being based on EMUI, I was pleased of late to see that more of them are coming out. Just not for the pro!
I also notice that the kernel source has been released. Although those experimenting are still experiencing some issues with it. https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-9/how-to/kernel-source-t3639912
But hopefully this means renewed iinterest from developes for an ASOP ROM for both mate 9 and the Pro!
Hi there guys, i want to ask if somebody can create a template for Nokia 3 without using a launcher. Or if possible, to create a modified ROM that is able to slide the apps from menu horizontally and not vertically, if it possible to remove the apps border from the home menu, if it possible to remove the white background in menu with an wallpaper, and to show the rounded icons.
Here is my idea:

miui is very hard to port, lineageos/rr/aosp is easier to port. We need to find ROM with same specs (same CPU, same GPU, same RAM) or similar specs. Just port ROM need to have same kernel version as stock ROM (3.18.35+ for Nougat or 3.18.60+ for Oreo).
I think because of the regularity of updates, people are less concerned about custom roms. At last I am less concerned about them. It says something when i'll rather stick with the stock recovery than with a custom one

i only care about custom roms because nokia stock roms are bad in performance because of a lot of system apps (deleting some system apps helped but still it's not that good) and a lot of RAM usage.

Probably because there is no development on other Nokia devices either?
Someone has asked for MIUI on the Nokia 3.
Why?
MIUI is absolutely terrible and not something I want to see or use.
I really think because of Nokia's almost stock android no one can really be bothered to develop them right now.
I might be wrong and would love to see a lineage or AOSP ROM but why bother if we are getting android P eventually? (As announced by Nokia / HMD a few weeks ago)

Unwanted apps? Name them? I don't have any unwanted or unnecessary apps, I have what I want and need and no bloat.
The stock UI is the best I've ever used, and battery is much better since the Oreo update.
I'll admit it was very poor running nougat.
Name me another cheap android device that getting updated to android P and gets regular Google security updates guaranteed for two years?
There isn't many......
Obviously your opinion is totally respected but I can only tell you I'm happy with my device as it is, no other device I've had recently gives me such a lag free or problematic time as the Nokia does, it's flawless (to me)
I do notice many complaints about the Nokia 3 though, so others must be using their device differently or more heavily than I do.
Anyway, what's that got to do with this discussion?
If no other Nokia devices are being actively developed do you really honestly think someone is going to start just because you think it has alot of unnecessary apps installed or the battery is poor?
No, of course not.
If there was a lineage or AOSP ROM I would use it, definitely.
I have a device on lineage 15.1 and it's very good.....
Edit
If no one is interested in developing this device then it won't happen, whatever you or me think.

Agree, it's really nice. I compared it to my Axon 7 and of course Axon 7 is faster but surprisingly Nokia 3 kept apps in multitasking same as Axon 7 and battery is much better. Battery is very good with both Oreo and Nougat.
I think the fact that there are regular updates is another reason why people aren't so charged up about custom roms.
I think lineage is still on 7.x, nokia 3 is on 8.x and will probably reach 9.x well before Lineage.
Also, if the source code had been available last year when the phones where still new, custom roms might have been made, but now it has become last year's phone.
Some of us also remember the hoops we had to go through just to unlock the bootloader.
Maybe when they no longer release updates for the phone, if it's still popular enough, people might start to develop again
Regarding mi mix 2s android p preview, Does it mean my device will become like pixle and recieve OTA updates as soon as they come out? Android 8 then 9 then 10... Etc
Stable Android P will see the reintroduction of MIUI, they put too much development in MIUI to allow you to use pure Android P, just like all manufacturers do. it's a shame tho, i would love this phone with pure android

I'm not a religious person but amen brother!
The device really rocks even with the developer preview. I can't wait to have an aosp rom for this device! Coming from Nexus devices ever since I still love the look, smoothness and bloatware free android experience.
Maybe Google can force manufacturers to let people choose between stock android and their own UI. Chose at first startup and you're good to go!

it's not going to happen, bro. it's like Microsoft forcing everyone to use Edge instead of Firefox and Chrome. They paid license fee and the hardware manufacturers make money by all means necessary. GUI is one of those. I personally do not care about GUI, i had LG, HTC, Samsung and Sony phones. I choose best performing device on the market based on design, spec and camera. I use Smart Launcher on all of them and just delete/hide all bloatware. MI 2s is the one i like this year, i run preview on it for a month, it's keeps crashing and camera app lost all MI 2s advantages so i am back on MIUI Global now. All other developer ROMs i tried, including MIUI10 is just full of bugs. Depends what you want to use your prone for... i used it primarily for business, stable ROM is more important that new bells&whistles half of which doesn't work. I got preview for MIUI10 and it's far from even something usable on a daily basis.
I am sure we will get something closer to pure android soon, Xiaomi really making headlines by allowing all kinda testing on this phone, it's good marketing strategy. i like it, but from what i saw so far, Global 9.5.19.0 is the one for me
You're absolutely right about that!
They can't force the manufacturer to let people choose. Which is of course a bad thing and by that I mean to force them.
I tried the miui global ROM 9.5.15 and it's stable and working but it has too many restrictions for me. I just like the stock android and not this iOS plagiarized version.
I'll wait for the custom ROMs. I run lineageos on my Samsung note 10.1 2014 because the original firmware made the tablet unusable. Lags as hell and you can't even uninstall all this bloatware without root.
Nice to see different tastes, that's what's makes the development strive for new solutions. Which is obviously great! So everybody can choose what fits them best!

It's worth mentioning, the final 1/2 developer previews are actually pretty stable, I had a Xperia 3 that got the Nougat Dev Previews and Sony decided to stop with Dev Preview 5 and not release a stable version, but I used Dev Preview 5 as my daily driver and had 0 issues with it

until someone port MIUI camera app or release it standalone i would go with MIUI ROM, all camera ports i tried suck. That's pretty much the same problem for all manufacturers since camera hardware is differ from one to another
I'd also love pure android on the mix2s. But I guess miui is just the only kinda "downside" for this great device. And besides I think miui 10 is reaaally sexy, especially the multitasking!
as the title says i wonder why there is so "little" development for the i9lite going on
i thought a device with this great specs for such a little price would be very interesting, but when you look at similar devices as the 9t or 9t pro there is a lot more of development
don't get me wrong i really thank all the devs that work on the i9lite right now, but i am a little bit worried as the a2 lite i have right now is also a great device but without much development there are only a few custom roms and and a hardly working twrp for it
my i 9lite is actually on the way to me, but right now i am really afraid that i will get in the same problem as with the a2 lite that there is absolutely no interest for the devs to work for this device.
Maybe the 9t(pro) would have been the better decision regarding this, but i really do not like the front cam of the T devices
I wish i could do a little developing for custom roms myself but i do not have the skills :crying: -
what do you guys think about it or you you have no concerns in this direction and you are really happy with the i9lite an how things are at the moment ?
I'm the same as you, waiting for mine to arrive.
Moving from Moto g5 plus it looks pretty quiet here.
I hope we can get a decent gcam at least
I don't know about other countries but in France the Mi 9 Lite just started becoming available through carriers. It might be that there are just less people equipped with that phone for now. I will also get a Mi 9 lite, there is already Lineage and GSI, so the roms I'm most interested in are there already.
Just reading from telegram group. One developer (coderzs)is ready to make base tree(I'm not sure of the term),also a recognized developer of mia2 lineage and other custom rom fo a2. But they trying to raise fund to get the device. I think it's just a matter of time and we can see a lot custom here in xda. Just follow the telegram group, search for mi9t lite/Cc9 global.
For there to be active development and/or many developers, the device must be widely available and relatively popular. You can't expect all those things to be a fact barely few months after device release. Seeing as it has great specs and is reasonably priced, it's just a matter of time until the device becomes interesting to developers.
Also, a word of advice - nobody likes doing stuff for free for a pushy user base.

that is absolutly clear, also i really apriciate all the work that the devs do in their freetime and for free, my opening post is absolutly not meant in this direction.
i am grateful that there is this great modding community that gives us a lot of opportunities that the manufacturers themselves do not even they get paid for it.
i am only worried as custom roms is the only way to have a long life for the smartphone as you still get new android versions when the manufacturer is only releasing security updates or nothing at all at a certain point.
so i hope you are right and that its only a matter of time
@Kadyo
a that sounds interesting i hope i can find this group as i am not so familiar with this telegram, i would also like to spend a certain amount to get the i9lite for the dev (maybe you can pm me the group if its not against xda's rules)

MOD EDIT: Telegram link removed, read the STICKY!
A huge factor in ROM development is the geographic area in which the device is popular. Most developers for Xiaomi phones are from India which is an incredibly competitive market where, frankly, this phone makes little sense: the Mi 9T with basically the same specs is only marginally more expensive, and the latest Redmi is waaaaaaay cheaper. Now, in Europe the Mi 9 Lite makes more sense for the price bracket it's in, but for some reason the developer scene in European countries is lackluster at best. Fortunately, Russia is another country famously active for Android developing and, apparently, this phone is doing fairly well there.
As someone mentioned early, we're currently trying to buy and send a Mi 9 Lite to a ROM developer, so depending on how this ends we may be able to get this forum moving a bit
In the meantime, my standard response is the usual: if you really can't stand MIUI, give GSIs a shot! They're far better than I thought!

It's not yet released in India, is it? That might also be a reason for why there's not a lot going on yet. I do think it is weirdly priced in Europe as well. It's a bit disheartening to see there's not a lot going on (yet, hopefully!) in terms of custom ROMs, but I've never used a custom ROM before on either of my phone and I don't intend to play around with ROMs anyway.
But nice to hear you guys try to get a phone to a ROM developer!
thanks for all your suggestions and opinions so far, will try to get onto telegram this weekend and see how this works.
I've Purchased Mi9Lite About 2 Month Ago(Iran- From Abu Dubai) , Device is Great For Price (350-400$ In My Country! ) in Compare to other devices like RN8P
But development???
There's Even No Ported Gcam For Mi9Lite and Stock Camera Quality is awful
Custom Roms? Hmmn I'd rather to use more stable versions
But there's still a hope, In Russian Forums (4pda) some devs r developing kangaroo kernel for this device
MIUI Rom Are So Smooth but have little bugs and they're annoying like app freezing while using VPN!

we have the basics, which is TWRP and a way to flash GSIs, there's not really any need for anything else tbh, the days of specific devices development are behind
I bought mi 9 lite for 217$ month ago. This is the best choice of Mi9/Mi9T because of its price and card slot.
This smartfon had working LOS 2 months after world release! Now LOS is ebought mature for use it as daily driver. With ported gcam is absolutely amasing. My old xperia z3c waited years for first LOS, and up to 5 years for OFFICIAL version of LOS.
If Mi9 will sell itself very good, we will see many other custom roms.
I will stay with LOS, because is the best for me.

Even with GSI, I could not make the camera work satisfactorily and rom to pass the safetynet, and the statusbar does not display the icons properly ...
I have the mi a3 and I'm looking at the 9 lite for the bigger and more high res screen. But yeah there's definitely more development for the a3 though it was officially launched in September vs July (according to gsmarena). I do hope we get more devs for this phone, because it seems like a good one. I'm already stretching my budget with the 9 lite. I don't want to stretch more with the 9t
It's just not that popular as other devices are right now..
I just purchased it though, looking nice, when I get it first thing I'll do will be unlocking BL.
I think this phone has not released yet (or released very recently) in India, this will boost activity a lot.
Just kinda surprised custom recovery is not at the official twrp site yet.

Mi Cc9 was released in India 9 months ago or so. The Mi9 Lite is a rebranded CC9. The specs are all the same afaik.
I made a mistake. See the next reply.
