I am a latecomer to Android 6, as KitKat has been the best for my outdated hardware, until now with the S7 (woohoo!) I've always needed to run custom ROMs because stock Android looks very boring to me. I am a big fan of everything "inverted" so that instead of black text on all white backgrounds. white text on all black backgrounds looks EXCELLET, especially on Samsung's AMOLEDs. Now with Android 6, I am quite pleased with how much I can customize the look, with function baked right in. VERY nice. (Also running Nova Launcher).
That said. I have looked through many of the themes available for Marshmallow, but one part of this OS that is driving me nuts is the ugly phone app--it's a very plain black on white. I've also tried different dialers, but those all launch the stock "phone" app when an actual call is in session, switching from a nice white on black dial-keypad (stock or third-party dialer) (btw, the "phone" app is on the play store, by Google Inc.)
So, does anybody know, first of all, what the deal is with the stock black on white phone app not following a theme's colors? is this a fault of the theme dev or Google's "phone" app?
Secondly, does anybody know if there is a fairly recent phone.apk version that has been modified to invert the colors?
Man! almost every other app I have is white on black, except this phone app!
If you are not sure what I'm talking about, try applying a dark theme and then start a call, and watch your phone app revert to the ugly black on white in-call screen.

That is a nice dialer, indeed, but the in-call phone app is NOT the same thing as a dialer. There are many dialers, but I am asking about the app that a dialer launches when a telephone call is running.

I'm not looking for a dialer. Please see the original post.

The new google voice actions is really slick looking grey/ steel and functions beautifully
It would be awesome to see the sleek look of this app brought throughout the entire os, it actually brings me to wonder what gingerbread will look like if this is the newest thing from google... perhaps it will take a turn that way!
untill then... i hope someone with the time would take intrest in this ^_^
interesting obversation by the way!
Gingerbread is expected dates are mid- October (around 15 -16th).
So we really don't have long to wait.
Hmm like a Carbon steel theme? I like that Idea too!
Really, the new "voice actions" box looks exactly like the new widget theme Google introduced with Eclair. Nothing new or exciting here, other than that this is the biggest box we've seen with this theme (until now it's been smaller, like the music or news/weather widgets). Would be cool to see them continue to integrate it, though.
Personally, though, I think they should run with the new Froyo look. The semi-transparent background from the new Launcher2 dock, or the keys that appear on the Froyo stock keyboard when you swipe up? Overlay those on top of this widget background. Use that as the background for all the widgets, and the keys on the keyboard, really anything in the OS that is supposed to be dark.
I also wonder if Google will ever exchange the status bar for a dark one, since that's what every custom skin (Sense, Blur, TouchWiz) and almost every theme from XDA does. Seems obvious that's what most people want. (Not me; I prefer it light, but I'm just sayin')
I liked how everything was black and dark on previous android versions (settings, call, messaging, etc..) I don't like the whiteness in the lollipop ui as it may consume more battery life than dark ui.
Suggestions?
Bump
This should actually be possible through the Samsung theme store (look at the Space theme for example). Unfortunately I've yet to find a simple dark theme. The theme store is also a bit of a pain to navigate.
Ha! Just had a look at that theme, and one of the screenshots says "CONACTS" instead of "CONTACTS." Way to go, Samsung quality control!

Hey - I think I can help with this. User Gunthermic was kind enough to upload the Cogul Black theme, which was promised, but never arrived in the theme store. See no. 10 in the following for download and install instructions - http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...e-samsung-stock-s6-themes-collection-t3080847
My first thought was to turn the screen off :-/ don't get much blacker than that.
But I too miss the darkness of such things as CM KitKat u.u
I can't seem to find out how to change the colors. Before I could select from a few colors (without having a theme). Now I just get grey and a dull yellow. Anyone know how to change these?
Nobody? So you're all stuck with dull grey and dull yellow chat bubbles too?
I'm talking without a theme here. Stock 7.0 update. No way to change those colors?

I just use google messenger. Can change contact colors on that one. Never knew you could on the stock messenger app.
I didn't think you ever could change the color of the bubbles. Prior to my S7, I had an S6 that I was looking to change the colors on. All that I could turn up was changing the background and that was about it.
You could definitely change the chat bubble colors on MM. I'm used to using black and blue bubbles but now I'm stuck with yellow and grey after upgrading to Nougat. I don't understand why Samsung would remove that option with an UPDATE lol.

Did some one figure it out? I can't stand the damn color of the bubbles. Grr!
this is bugging me too!! have we found a fix?
I've been trying to figure this out too. Along with the fact that keyboard is no longer simultaneously spell checking my words in two languages like it was doing before. It's frustrating. I have to toggle between language. No fun.
Just go to the theme store and grab a theme. I'm using a material design theme. Nowmmy bubbles are blue and white.

I'm right there with ya. Unfortunately Messaging is the app I'm in most. Had to make the skin change.

I just updated my OS [Verizon is always the last kid on the block to update anything] and I'm having the same issue. Before the update from Marshmallow we could choose which bubble style we wanted - now all we have is this sickly yellow and grey. Are we stuck with this?
Sent SMS
I have posted this somewhere else but it is not getting answered. Since you were talking about changing messaging apps, this seems like a good place to try again. No matter what I do, I cannot get previously sent SMS to show up in third party texting apps. I have tried 5 with the same result. Only the stock app shows the sent messages. Samsung S6 with 7.0 as of 5/9, but the problem existed on 6.0 as well. Thanks
I hate the grey and yellow mites colors too. Wtf?
the badges? yeah after the update they changed it to a hideous orange color and i haven't been able to change it back. i actually contacted samsung and they said it was deliberate. why? i have no idea. so gosh darn stupid.
Google messenger. I left using theirs on the S7.
I haven't owned a HTC prodiced phone since Nexus One and wanted to know if it's possible to theme the phone black, as in black settings, black dialer, black notification area, etc? Not a big fan of white background...
i would imagine so, HTC has a theme store with a ton of different options where you can pretty much change anything, icons, text, dialer/messages backgrounds etc...
No HTC theme system isn't as deep integrated like Samsung or LG. It won't theme the settings or the notification area. Dialer, message app etc can be theme through the theme store.

This is correct. I received the phone today and I've found no evidence of being able to change notifications/dialer etc to black. In the theme store you can change wallpapers, icons, and some other things only.

You tried using substratum rootless option? Works on most phones which are running android 8.0 Oreo ?
I hope it will be possible. Just pre-ordered one. Would be nice if it's rootable and if skins can be bought for it. Hate cases...
Hello
When I purchased my Pixel 2 I used to have a true black theme when using dark wallpapers.
Since upgrading to 8.1 the dark theme is smoked black (a bit translucent). (E.g. I'm now in Tapatalk writing this I pull down the quick settings and I can see this text behind it).
Is this something that really changed in 8.1 or I have a bug or something?
I can't remember if the settings app was black before...but at the moment is light. Same thing with the Google Feed cards, dark wallpaper but white cards.
Sent from my Pixel 2
Not a bug, this is something Google changed in 8.1 - solid black changed to a rather meh slightly transparent black.
You can use Substratum to change it back to a solid black if you want (though a lot of black themes seem to have irritating glitches with at least some notifications, so some trial and error may be needed).
The settings app was always white. You do need to use a 3rd party tool to change that.
I don't use Google Feed, so can't answer that last one.
Thanks. This week I've tried modifying this using the Andromeda and substratum etc. But I didn't liked it because the notifications were also changing the colour etc. But mainly because of the customisation, I'll prefer to keep things as stock as possible.
Anyway thanks for confirming this was an actual change in 8.1!
