Hi,
I'm currently on the latest stock ROM (SM-920F - MMB29k.G920FXXU5DQA7)
I'm in the UK and am looking at moving from Tesco Mobile to Three as I don't get any signal in my house and want to use WiFi calling.
The only way to get native wifi calling is to have bought the phone from the carrier (ie to have their ROMinstalled) so I'm thinking of flashing my phone with the three ROM, the problem is I don't want to lock my phone so that it will only accept a three sim.
Can anyone confirm where how the sim lock is activated? Is it done in the ROM or do they do something over ADB to lock the sim?
Bump
Don't think it would lock your device because I thought of doing the opposite years back. I thought if I flashed an unlocked rom my phone would be unlocked, it wasn't. So an educated guess would say you will be fine. But then again I'm not 100%. Try it, you could always flash back.

I bought my Desire S from eBay which was Orange SIM locked and Orange branded.
After messing about with custom ROM's I set it back to S-ON and flashed the UK Orange RUU. It was working with an Orange SIM that I have, but rarely use.
I went to a high street phone unlocking guy earlier today and paid for him to unlock it. I didn't see exactly what he did, but he put a SIM in it and may have connected it to a small unlocking device. I asked him 'I can put any SIM in, yeah?' once he'd finished and he said yeah. I went to a nearby coffee shop and sat down, swapped the Orange SIM (which had a signal) with my giffgaff/o2 SIM and I also got a signal. 'great' I thought, 'his unlocking trick worked!'.
I put my giffgaff SIM back into my Galaxy S for the journey home, since I've got that all set up how I like it, and I put the Orange SIM that I don't use back into the Desire S.
Now that I'm home neither SIM is working
I thought to myself 'did the guy only temporarily unblock my phone?' but that can't be right because when I was sat in the coffee shop I rebooted the phone at least twice, if not three times, when I was swapping SIM's so a temporary fix would've been cancelled out then.
Is it because I tried to use a giffgaff/o2 SIM with an Orange branded RUU ROM? Would that have done something to my radio?
It sometimes displays 'limited service' on the lockscreen and displays 'no service' on the unlock screen bar.
I've tried switching it to GSM only in the menu's.
Should I S-Off the phone and flash a custom ROM to try and rectify the situation, so that I can use any SIM in the phone?
Could it be that his special SIM has dirtied the contacts in my phone?
It worked about 3 hours ago
Update:
I just picked it up and then noticed that I had a signal on giffgaff!
The signal has gone again but at least the SIM is working. Either there are local network troubles of the radio I'm using is not too good.
I'm going to go ahead and S-OFF, root and custom ROM to see if that helps signal strength.
Will a custom ROM install update the radio, or do I have to specifically flash a new radio?
So have you tried to use SIM in another phone?
I had same kind of issue. I called to customer service and they said that try SIM in another phone, then put it back to my phone and that solved the problem!
So I was changin my service provider and tested a new SIM in my phone(wasn't in operation yet) and then switched back to old SIM, then "no network". Randomly gave some signal but only few seconds at time.
Sorry for my english.. May be that I missed some points of your text But hopefully I helped!
Hi,
I hope someone could help me save a useless phone.
I got a Z3 from ebay (it's O2 Germany). As soon as I turned it on it updated to 5.0.2.
Then later I inserted the SIM card (took me some time to get the nano from the carrier).
It's not SIM locked.
The problem is that I can't get a steady signal. AT ALL. It hits a signal for 2 sec, then nothing.
It can recognize my carrier in the split second that it's on, I got the access points and all. I can even search for carriers and get a list of several to choose from.
The same phenomena is apparently happening with the NFC - the software switch turns on then straight off (same radio chip issue?)
I have tried GSM only, WCDMA only, LTE.
Tried changing the bands used using the internal *#*# menus.
Using flashtool I have flashed a stock global rom instead of the german. And local stock.
I have read that some people had this issue after the lollipop update so I rolled back to stock 4.4.4, same issues with cellular and NFC.
I'm really at a lost. I have this fancy brick that I was hoping to give my dad (he needs the screen size, the old fool) and instead I'm wasting valuable time at work trying to fix it...
Anyone?
Thanks,
Juv.

I got the exact same problem, im in Norway and using mye Operator firmware..
I'm having the NFC problem. I have the US T-Mobile version (D6616), and NFC stopped working right after I updated to Lollipop.
Factory reset, and repairing using Sony's PC Companion does not help. On first boot, i'll get a "NFC firmware update failed (-1)".
Just unlocked my phone through the Tmobile app and now plan to root (hopefully I can I'm already on 10D and was gonna do the tot method but idk about all these problems with it, this is my daily but I miss xposed dearly). Any way I want to know will the unlock stick through a factory reset and rooting? Also when I unlocked I got this weird message.....
Update: Well I'm rooted and ran the app again and still shows the message. Tried a few extra sim cars I had lying around for att and Verizon...... BOTH were able to pick able to pick up a signal and read the phone numbers from those cards but of course weren't able to make calls. Are the G5's like the S7's when it comes to unlocking? The S7's support all carriers hardware wise once unlocked not just GSM ones, is this the same? Unfortunately I don't have an active Verizon sim to test with.
Yes I have had the lg v10 on T-Mobile and had it permanently unlocked and since then have flashed wiped and tried new Roms with no revert to being sim locked and I had it done on my lg g5 and since then flashed fluences ROM and wiped a few times and my phone still works when I put my [email protected] work sim in it to make calls and text
OK, this is going to sound weird but here goes. I know generally that once a phone is unlocked.. it stays that way. This is the first time I've ever experienced anything quite like this. I purchased a n920t used and unlocked.. once I tried the note 7 port, found bugs with different services crashing like "enhanced features".. I went to flash the n7 rom after a wipe. Didn't like that so decided to flash back the stock image.. the phone restarted saying it was Sim locked and to use the silly t-mobile app to u lock it. Well I'm in Canada, won't unlock or even try via WiFi and you must have a connection to their data network to try.. purchased a remote unlock service.. unlocked no problem. Played around trying to debug the note 7 port and tried a couple of older rom ports for the phone and relocated again. After I spoke with the tech that was unlocking my phone AGAIN.. he said that the new "remote unlocking" type phones unlock via the modem... long story short.. you have to be very careful that you don't load a locked or blocked modem via rom image or you will wind up relocking your phone.. at least that's been my experience. Of anyone else has had this type of problem with the new style of unlocking.. please chime in.. I would love to know how deep this problem goes and if this is going to be an ongoing problem if modem change is necessary.
Albear
I just recently switched from Sprint to ATT after unlocking my phone. After the switch was pretty terrible when all the installed software just kind of broke. Caller ID even started screwing up.
Fast forward to now and I ran the process using the Factory Binary and Canadian Firmware and successfully got my phone to identify as an ATT phone and boot with the full logo and software suite. However after doing that I am still unable to get anything really ATT related working properly. All my caller ID issues are now fixed, but I can't get WiFi calling to work (the main reason I flashed ATT instead of unlocked)
Is there any way to get wifi calling working on my phone? If not should I just switch to the us unlocked firmware since Wifi calling is really the only reason I know of to use a carrier firmware.
Thanks!
Cannot find anyone to answer this either. Have Unlocked version of S8+ on AT&T and cannot get Wifi Calling or Video Calling. Get no answer that if I Flash AT&T firmware on phone will that get me Wifi Calling etc. like an AT&T phone.
I believe that with anything but a carrier sold device, you will never be able to get WiFi calling. In spite of flashing the proper CSC and firmware, the IMEI still shows up in their system as an "unknown" device.
