[APP][Android 7 Nougat][D2W]Turn on your screen by double tapping ON icon in AOD - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Themes, Apps, and Mods

This is just an app i found out while redditing.
So all of us who have nougat know that when we double tap a notification icon while in AOD it turns on the screen and brings you to that app right?
Well what this app does is that it always gives a turn on icon notification on the AOD screen andif you double tap it it turn on the screen and it doesn't send you to a specific app it just turns on the screen kinda like double tap to wake.
I installed it a couple of hours ago and it works just fine! :good:
So i think so far this is the best way to unlock the phone without pressing any hardware buttons.
Link to play store app

This can be done using Tasker too, but since that app is free that's a nice alternative.

This is exactly what I am looking for. Great app ????????

could be very nice without strange autorisation for network access

Hi CoolRaoul!
Could you please describe how to do this with Tasker?
Thanks!

It's pretty simple indeed,
All you have to do is to set up a "Display Off" profile whose enter task creates a notification and exit task cancel it (since double tapping on any existing notification wake display):
Code:
Profile: DisplayOff (168)
State: Display State [ Is: Off ]
Enter: DisplayOFF.enter (35)
A1: Secure settings [ Configuration: Read system aod_mode Timeout (Seconds): 10 ]
A2: Stop [ With Error: Off Task: ] If [ %stsettingvalue = 0 ]
A3: Variable Set [ Name: %msg To: Wake Device Recurse Variables: Off Do Maths: Off Append: Off ]
A4: Notify [ Title: %msg Text: Icon: hd_aaa_ext_import Number: 0 Permanent: Off Priority: 3 ]
Exit: DisplayOFF.exit (214)
A1: [X] Play Ringtone [ Type: Notification Sound: Unlock Stream: 5 ]
A2: Variable Set [ Name: %msg To: Wake Device Recurse Variables: Off Do Maths: Off Append: Off ]
A3: Notify Cancel [ Title: %msg Warn Not Exist: Off ]
A1 and A2 steps are purely optional (require Secure Task plugin), just a small optimisation which skip notification creation if Always on Display is disabled
For the "double tap to lock" (even if t's not the subject of this thread) I use the Nova Launcher gesture.

When my screen is off I swipe to enable screen feeds and then put my finger on menu button then the screen turns on. I enabled finger print and I just put my finger on menu not push it.

Works fine too and do not require any 3rd party app.
This require to swipe up then down (the thread subject was about "double tapping on icon")
Anyway, could be a matter of taste

Interesting app, but since I still have to swipe the screen, even with smart lock enabled, it's utility is somewhat limited. If double-tapping would take me right to the last app, instead of the swipe screen, it would be great, but right now it's easier to just use the hardware button and fingerprint.
I can see this being very useful on the S8, though, with it's stupid rear-mounted fingerprint sensor.

I have smart lock with my gear s2 and with location in my home and it does indeed send me straight to my last app without asking me to unlock or use fingerprint, i don't know why it doesn't work with you.

nice app man!!!
i start using it

Not that useful at all. If only we could double tap the notification icon so it can expand or be shown like ambient display instead of getting us to the fingerprint/pin prompt...

Its the same you have been doing since you got the phone... but now instead of pressing the home/power button you don't need to press any actual hardware button, i personally always have the feeling that i will damage my hardware buttons if i press them a lot which probably isn't true but i like it not having to press any button now.
Besides if you ever had a lg phone with double tap to wake (i had the lg g2) its exactly the same thing, you double tap the screen and it just gets you to the lock screen and you have to nomally unlock it.
The only way to go directly to the home screen without anything else is for samsung to implement a fingerprint reader like all the ones available on newer phones where you only put finger on top and it will unlock.
Since i have a gear s2 and enabled smart lock with it i just press this icon's app on the lock screen and it gets me directly to the home screen without having to do anything else.

Yes, you are right, that it what everyones is doing right now!
What I am trying to say is that it would be better if there was a way to see the notification before we unlock the phone.
When I receive a sms, an icon apears in AOD but no further info is displayed. And if I want to see the sender I have to press a button! Thats what is wrong in my opinion! Double Tap should awake the screen in Black and White (just like ambient display) and then we decide whether to unlock or not.

Tested Smart Unlock with NFC tags

So I bought a few cheap nfc tags from China and used one for the Smart Unlock. Since mxp doesn't have fingerprint sensor, I guess having a Skip alike thing would be the next best thing. Very easy to setup, just go to Security menu, Smart Unlock (you must have pin or pattern lock), add Trusted Devices, pick NFC then put the tag behind the phone. Give it a name and thats it. The only hassle with this unlocking method is you have to wake up the phone then only it will read the tag. Skip has a magnet built in that wakes up the phone automatically. Oh and another not so good thing is you have to lock the phone using the power button in order for the unlock to work. Whenever I lock using Nova's Screen Lock or Greenify's Hibernate and Lock, it just didn't work.
Update on diy skip. Now I no longer needs to press the power button to lock/unlock the phone. With root access, use Tasker and Secure Settings plugin to emulate power button press when display is off (run command - input keyevent 26). Then use Nova launcher's screen lock shortcut gesture (double tap, swipe up/down etc) to complete the process. I have a small magnet taped to the nfc tag, so when I slowly swipe from the side, the magnet wakes up the screen and then nfc takes over to unlock.

Motorola has a product called Skip which utilize the NFC chip to bypass the lockscreen. If you have been using some Moto phones, you should know that most of them has a magnetic sensor that is used for the docking (older Moto phones have dock accessories). The dock has a tiny magnet that when the phone detects it, it automatically turns the phone into a desk clock or navigation mode when attached to a car dock if I'm not mistaken. It seems that Moto maintains this sensor in newer phones, it is located at the back and in MXP case, somewhere in the center. If you have Skip, you attach it to your belt so when you pull the phone out from your pocket, all you need is a swipe on Skip and the phone is unlocked. I believe what happens is the phone detects the magnet, wakes up the phone (still locked) and then it detects the NFC tag inside Skip to unlock.
So I bought some NFC tags, got small magnet from my busted laptop hard disk, taped them together and attach it to my belt. If you don't have the magnet it is still possible to tap on the NFC tag to unlock but you have to enable Moto Display. When you pull your phone out, you'll see the clock, swipe down to get to the lockscreen (pin/pattern/password lock) and then tap on the tag to unlock.

Anyone else with experiences ? I was able to register the nfc tag but unlocking on the pattern lock screen didnt work. There was a sound when putting the nfc tag behind the device (so i guess somehow the nfc reader worked) but the unlock failed.
Maybe its only working if i have some special services switched on?

Usually the power button. Sometimes maybe because of the auto lock after some seconds (i set it to 30). I am not sure what you mean with shortcut app.

Our phone has a default app that detects the nfc chip, it's called Tags. I believe this app made the sound, if you're at the home screen (unlocked) and place the tag at the back of the phone you'll hear a sound and a popup message asking what to do even if you already registered the tag for smart unlock. I disabled this app to get rid of the sound and notification.
What I mean with the shortcut app is something like double tap to sleep or lock the phone. Greenify and Nova launcher app also has a shortcut to lock the screen. If you use this method to lock the phone, smart unlock won't work.

if my phone detects a nearby nfc, even if it is registered with smart lock, there is a black screen only saying:

Can someone enlighten me why this is useful? I mean, if you have Tasker and root you can use Secure Settings to unlock by WLAN or location (in LP that is), and if you are going to literally stick the key on the back of the device, why even set a lock at all? I would understand if the tag was in your wallet or your jacket or on your desk, but literally on the device?
Who said about sticking the key on the back of the device?
Oh, the magnet is just to wake up the screen. I must have read over that too quickly.
I want to apologize. I was wrong about not working my nfc tags. I simply missed that pretty little detail: nearing the nfc tag while in lock screen. I always tried to unlock while beeing in the screen before the unlock screen.
So, everything is fine now. I am using a stylish nfc ring beeing very happy with it.
Update, 2.2.2016: No, not everything is fine. I came across a bug or intended feature. The lock functionality is disabled after some time not using the phone, according to this:
this is a lollipop behavior.
According to this, nephiel made a workaround for at least MM.
Here is the bug report for this issue.
Does anyone else use the nfc ring or another nfc tag for unlocking?
Regards.

Don't like AoD, is DT2W an option ?

I don't care for the 'Always on Display' that Samsung and LG have implemented in their phones the last year. To me it seems absolutely useless, because it's not interactive and can't tap a notification to reply from the lockscreen. I much prefer Motorola's way they did their 'Active Display', I think that's the better way to do something like that. But whatever
Is it possible to disable AoD, and turn the screen on by Double Tap 2 Waking ? And then swipe up like other Android phones to enter the home screen ?
If I get a text, I want the screen to turn on, and be able to reply to that text from the lockscreen, is that possible on the S8 ?

You can install "glimpse notifications" app free from playstore with allmost zero battery consumption ... With that you deactivate AOD and everytime you receive a notification the screen light up to see the notification on lockscreen.
Don't forget to activate led bling light to work together and put all the apps that you want to light up your screen to "white list"
Also, the long press home screen works on both AoD and the regular lock screen, if you turn off AoD.
Galaxy S8+ Black
Hard pressing the home button while screen is off (AOD off) also works.

How to double tap straight to lock screen?

Basically one thing that I despised about the Pixel 3 XL when I had it was that you can't use the double tap to wake without using the Ambient display, and it appears from what I hear is that it's the same way on the OP7P. You actually have to do a Quad tap on the Pixel 3. Double tapping twice. What idiot at Google thought that was a good idea.
On my currently S10+, I have AOD and Ambient display turned off, and if I double tap the screen it takes me right to the lock screen so I can easily see what my notifications are. That's the way I prefer it. I know you can hit the power button, but I prefer to use the double tap method.
So, that one thing pretty much killed my desire to buy this phone. There is no way to turn off the Ambient display on the pixel 3 and still use double tap to wake, and it seems this stock feature carried over to the OP7P. Samsung at least gives people a choice.
So before I give up totally on buying this phone, does anyone know a setting or a hack to get it to work like the S10+ does?
You can double tap to show your lock screen on the 7 Pro. You can also double tap on a blank area of your home screen to lock the screen.
Yep 2 taps while screen is off will turn phone on at lock screen.....not ambient display or like a aod type screen.... and i like that because next move is just unlocking device
Nova launcher has a gestures input section and you can choose to "screen lock" with double tap, see attached. Hmm read your title which is misleading, makes it seem like you wanted to lock the phone with dbl tap.
It's in the kernel settings, it seems. Maybe somewhere else. I don't think I'm going to do DT2W because of the fingerprint sensor
Thanks for all the replies.
One thing that I noticed in all the review videos I watched on Youtube, is that when they double tap the screen, it shows the black ambient screen with the little icons for notification, not the actual lock screen. Then they use their finger to unlock.
So what you guys are saying is that it can be set up to when you double tap it takes you right to the lock screen wallpaper which shows the actual notifications and their text and not the black screen with just the time and little notification icons?
I like to actually see the notifications and what they say when I double tap like when the phone is sitting on my desk. I always hated that on the Pixel I had to double tap, and then double tap again.
@djsubterrain
Ya the title was the best I could come up with at that moment.

Because you need to enable another setting for double tap to wake.
Settings> button & Gestures> quick Gestures> Double tap to wake.

Locking screen without pressing power button

As title, there is any way to lock the screen without pressing the power button?
I used to lock the screen with fingerprint sensor on my old Moto G5 Plus but on this Zenfone 6 i still couldn't figure out a way to lock it without pressing the on/off button. Besides not being so practical it will wear the button faster and we all know how things are made today... to not last.

It's enabled by default, there is no dedicated settings. Once enabled double tap in settings, double tapping on status bar will turn off the screen.
You can double tap anywhere to lock your device, not only on status bar. The area you tap must be empty (icon free). I keep the center of the home screen empty for convenience.

Double tap only works when the ambient display is showing (the clock before the lock screen).
If you turn off ambient display all together, double tap does not work.

Double tap works for me without ambient display being on.
I'm on stock 58.0.A.28.51.
Looks like it's one of the system apps whose permission I modified.
I just did a factory reset
It seems like a common issue with this phone. My tap to wake has never worked properly and it's driving me insane. Tap tap tap TAP TAAAAP, then it works. Sometimes.
Does anyone have a solution for this before I throw it out of the second floor window?
Yeah, that's one of the very few annoying things. I wonder if it has to do with the screen protector? There have been user reports of lower touch sensitivity (mostly at the edges of the screen) due to screen protectors.
Double tap isn't working again when ambient display is set to "OFF" and I have not messed around with system app permissions.
I did verify that 2x tap is working after I debloated the phone with AD set to "OFF". Not sure what has changed since then because I have not used this phone since debloat.
More details:
-2x tap will only work when AD is showing
-for as long as AD is showing that clock, 2x tap works
Double tap and lag-free notifications should work much better when you set "Smart activation" in Ambient display settings (lokk in "When to show Ambient display" settings).
Same issues, tried many things mentioned here and more ... you'd think simple things like this would work flawlessly in a high end phone. Really tired of digging and digging in the phone and online to find solutions, so frustrating. Sony will have to make something extraordinary in the future to convince me to buy another phone from them ...
It's way too long time have passed from the last post, but I was wondering about the same issue of double tap when searching for the answer had led me to this topic. I've recently bought two same phones, not Sony but Nokia 5.4 with Android 10 and stucked in gesture unlock too. Though this topic didn't helped me, later I've found the solution by myself and eager to share the way that did worked for me with everyone.
So, if the double tap to wake up the screen suddenly stopped working, try this:
1) go to Settings-System-Gestures
2) find the "double-tap wake" option and turn it OFF
3) back to home screen and lock the phone with the power button
4) unlock the phone with any way
5) go to Settings-System-Gestures
6) find the "double-tap wake" option and turn it ON
That's all, your favorite unlocking must work again (well, both my phones were healed). Good luck! )
Inversely, you can't disable tap to wake on the AOD.
Infuriating.
In any case, 3-taps always works for me
Including this phone and Pixel 2XL.
