Samsung Galaxy Rugby Pro (SGH-547) Root / CWR / Other Hacks

There is now a super thread over here with this root information and some more recoveries. I plan on expanding as more things are developed for the Rugby Pro.
I have added other hacks to this thread below the root download links. Enjoy.
The below guide outlines how to gain root on the Samsung Galaxy Rugby Pro (SGH-I547 ATT / Bell (Yes, Canada works!) / commanche). Please read through the full guide before attempting to root your device.
You will need ODIN v3.04 in order to gain root on the Rugby Pro (comanche), I will not post a link due to the nature of the package. Google has plenty of links for it.
BIG thanks to utkanos for all the help and making this a reality
Install instructions -- goldenlederhosen has provided some further information and detail about the below procedure here
Please read his post as well as the instructions before attempting this procedure

Works like a charm!
Thanks for doing this guys. I was thinking I would have to create an insecure kernel for the stock ROM in order to get root. You saved me a lot of time & energy. Expect a donation coming from my way.

Would you be willing to pull an image of the stock boot partition (dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p7) and PM me a link?
Also: check the OP, I've added some info on how to get tethering (after rooting) without the need for a dedicated ATT tethering plan.

I would if I had any experience. My plan to insecure the kernel would have been my 1st time getting my feet wet with such a thing.

Thanks, I did but I don't find Tethering Manager. I did find Tethering Provision. Is that the same?

Provision is a separate app. When I'm back by my laptop in the morning I'll double check the paths and report back. I froze mine using Ultimate Backup or Titanium Backup. I forget offhand.

I tried to provide the link to both tarball & zipped files of my boot partition image, but I haven't done 10 posts yet, so xda has restricted me. Let see if a little disguise will work:

So what fun stuff can you do with this file & how would my image be any different then yours? Or is it another issue, like uploading being restricted because you're a developer?
Also, I'm interested in learning the process of how you created/edited the files , in order to root the Rugby Pro. I'm sure your busy, so pointing me toward a tutorial would be great.

Looks like TetheringProvision.apk is the one to freeze (do not delete unless you have a backup). If you try this let me know.

I plan on using a stock boot image so I can put together an ODIN image that will flash the phone back to a stock state. If you root your phone or have a custom recovery / system / boot OTA updates will generally fail to apply. The best way to get an OTA update applied is to rollback to stock and install the OTA.

The boot partition should be the same across devices unless you make modifications.
I had to blindly update the boot partition on my device to get root, so I do not have an un-changed copy of it. In order to get an OTA update applied and to work with some Cyanogen / Clockwork Recovery stuff I will need a clean boot partition image.

I worked with a few people to get help putting together an ODIN image that allowed me to get custom recovery and the clockwork recovery update.zip. There is no general guide on the steps necessary.
If you are interested in diving into the custom rom / recovery stuff I will be doing some work with improving clockwork recovery for the Ruby Pro (commanche) and hopefully working on a Cyanogenmod 10 (JellyBean) port in the future. I am working on some items for the Rugby Smart (apache) at present, as soon as that stuff is taken care of I'll be focusing more on the Rugby Pro (commanche). If you are interested in taking a shot at updating the clockwork recovery for the commanche let me know and I can maybe point you in a few directions to get you going.

You probably know this, but here's where I downloaded Samsung's ROM (disguised again, & I'm pretty sure the new "c" version is for Canada) Just search for sgh-i547:

I am interested. Realize I have miniscule programming skills (http, xml & Google {now MIT} App Inventor).
Also, I did freeze TetheringProvision, but I rarely tether. Usually I only need to when it's raining & my home DSL slows too much. I'll let you know if I have any problems when I do finally try it.

I pulled that package as well. Unfortunately it is only the GPL components they are required to release, not the full ROM sources. It does contain the kernel sources which will be very helpful down the line.

There is a lot of testing work and guess/check for the ROM building stuff. I was thinking of setting up an IRC channel on FreeNode for discussing work on the device. Would you be interested / willing to move some of the interactive discussion over there once I have a channel setup?

Keep me in the loop. I tend to only tether for the purpose of my tablet when I'm not near a WiFi AP. I wanted to point it out just in case, better to have it working before it's necessary.
Let me know if you want a modded stock kernel . I'l be willing to help, even though I don't have the device on-hand.
IRC channel on FreeNode is setup: #rugby-pro-dev for those that are interested.

I think we should be covered at the moment. The first priority will likely be getting a recovery nailed down and 100% before working on a customized kernel. I'm hoping to get recovery nailed sooner than later so we can do things like nandroid and similar before starting in on CM10 or another ROM.
I am also working on the Rugby Smart (apache) CM9/3.0 Kernel/CM10 stuff as well so my time with the Pro is limited at the moment. Hopefully the Smart stuff moves quickly so I can loop back around to the Pro quickly.

Ah, learn something new every day.

Sure, I already monitor #opennic on freenode, so I can just open another channel.

ETA, help, donation etc
I'm very interested in buying the Samsung Galaxy Rugby Pro for AT&T. However, there is no Cyanogenmod port for it yet. I really only want to have a phone if it can run a free ROM.
@kemonine96 et.al.:
When do you think a beta CM port will be ready?
I have not done any Android development and very little administration, but I am a seasoned Linux software engineer. Is there any way I can help with porting CM to this phone?
Finally, would a donation (kemonine96 has a paypal donations link) speed up the process? I can't afford to pay hundreds of dollars, but I could do something like 50....

You are not alone in that sentiment. I won't run a device I know won't receive a CyanogenMod port. The good news is as long as there is root, CyanogenMod can be made to work.

"Soon". Myself and a couple others are working on a set of changes for the Rugby Smart (predecessor to the Pro) and once they are further along I will be looking into starting the CyanogenMod port for the Pro.

Most definitely, there are a few things that would help out a CyanogenMod port significantly. If you contact me via IRC (see OP) or via PM we can discuss some of the options and take it from there. Please note I leave my IRC connection active 24x7 so I may not respond right away.

As much as I may appreciate a donation, please hold off as I cannot commit to working on CyanogenMod for the Pro in a paid capacity I am comfortable with. I am working 50-60 hour work weeks at my day job so my free time is severely limited. I have every intention on bringing CyanogenMod to the Pro but it is a free time problem more than anything else.

[Resolved] [Solved][Q] How to increase the media volume range for xperia mini pro [Help]

IF THERE IS A POST ABOUT THIS ALREADY PLEASE DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME AND JUST REDIRECT ME TO THE LINK
As said above, if the link you give me for the steps are hard (I cant do complex stuff, i only understand simple instructions) you can re write the steps here for me to get a better understanding
Okay, i am kind of irritated with the whole 15 levels of volume for Android devices and i wish to increase the range upto 30, 50 is preferred.
I've tried this link HERE
And obviously it didn't work because it is made for a Samsung device which is not mine
So done with the intro (Sorry if I bore you )
I will just tell you what I have and what i need
What I have:
I use an Xperia Mini Pro Sk17i
Running on Cyanogenmod 9.1 (ICS)
Yes it is rooted (No duh)
What I want:
Better range for my volume from 0-15 to 0-30 (50 is appreciated)
At least a frameworkmod.zip
Easy instructions or link to where i can do all this if it has been done
I know if there is a thread about this this will just make me look lazy or something but no, i have been searching around (still am) but i decided to ask so that a kind, charming, knowledgeable person (Trying to attract you ) can step forward and help me
Hope I can get a reply
Additional info can be asked at your request
There must be a specific rom for that..

I shall if you help me out more
Anywho, im sure you dont need a specific ROM for that
I've seen certain devices just have a framework.jar or framework.zip you need to install which just changes some codes
I found one thread HERE after some extensive searching and that volume fix is for my phone, it is not a Rom. I dont know if it will work with CM9.1 Mango but I am just doing a nandroid backup right now and I am going to try it
No helps?
Come on, im sure someone can help me out
Please?

I am just stuck in the CM boot screen, I've changed the permissions as mentioned in the Topic
This post is solved thanks to numerous people
THIS POST HAS BEEN SOLVED THANKS TO NUMEROUS PEOPLE
Okay so I managed to get 30 steps of volume ^_^ :victory: (Yes I am jumping for Joy)
So anyways, alot of editing, i will be posting links to where i got help to and.... also make the steps easier incase any newbie (Like me) comes by
So yeah
I would Like to credit Dexter93 from #xda-rc who took his time to help me out
Recognized Contributor Chat Support Link HERE
Go to that link so you can access the link to have a chat with the recognized contributors if you have any doubts, they help alot ^_^
And if you are lucky they should be online most of the time
How I managed to do it
This is just for people who need to change their volume on their Mini Pro or other devices
Things you need :
Java software Development Kit
Download Latest JDK (Just download the Latest JDK, not JRE)
smali/baksmali tool (Thanks to the Korean guy, 'vorcot')
Download here
Have Notepad
Have your Framework.jar file on your desktop
Now sometimes Java might not be recognized in cmd
This will be noticed when you use Backsmali.bat (Happened to me)
You can get such message like: "Java Is Not Recognized As An Internal Or External Command"
So to fix that watch this video
Credits to the guy because I thought i would never fix it
After that
Go HERE
And follow the steps from "A. Basic Steps"
and in one step to change the volume you cant just put 30 or 100, it must be in hexadecimal form
You can use the converter here
Just enter a number on the decimal are which is your regular 1-Infinite numbers and click convert
Hope it helps for people who need it :good:
And Any questions can be asked
When I am free, i will make a full Tutorial for complete newbies

Basically the procedure would be something like this
you should only use ROM, and kernels meant for your device, do not use those mentioned in guide.

Which recovery does this use and by who? Also maybe you should include information+links on how to replace kinguser with supersu as kinguser does not give the same root access permissions as supersu does
I think you shouldn't post files without giving credits or asking for permissions...
And what's even more, there was already a KingRoot tutorial already over here, so repeating the threads is completely unnecessary.

[GUIDE AND STEPS] HOW TO DUALBOOT 2 OR MORE ROMS USING DUALBOOTPATCHER APP
Howdy All!!!
Today, I'll be guiding you how to Dual Boot 2 ROM from S5 G900H device. This guide can also work for other Phone and Models as well, as long as it is been supported by DualBootPatcherAndroid app.
I'm not the creator of the DualBootPatcherAndroid app, I'm just the user that decided to share a guide and steps for using the DualBootPatcherAndroid app.
With this, we don't need to flash our current ROM away from our devices to try a new ROM. We just test any ROM by Dual Booting it and leave our Daily ROM Untouched. Also, there's NO LIMIT to the number of ROM you want to install on your Device, as long as there's Available Space on your Device or Micro Sd Card. And, any ROM that you Dual Boot that you don't want for one reason or the other, you can easily Delete it and it won't affect you Primary ROM which should be your Daily use ROM. You just Delete the ROM then you good to go with your Daily ROM.
DUALBOOTPATCHER NOW SUPPORT ODIN FILES AS WELL
I pay my Respect by giving Credit to the following:
@chenxiaolong, (for creating DualBootPatcherAndroid app) Here's his thread link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2447534 to thank him and donate to him if you want to donate.

@jonathanmohamed, (for his AWESOMATIC Work and Effort creating AJ'S ROM NOTE7 PORT) Here's his thread link http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...development-exynos/g900h-aj-s-n7-rom-t3487815 to thank him and donate to him if you want to donate.
I'm also thanking all other Members and Developers for given Support one way to the other to the above Mentioned OP's.
There's no way you gonna brick you device for following this Guide. You only put your device in DANGER if you Flash any ROM that's not Recommended for you device and if you include any other steps apart from my complete step... Then you have YOURSELF to BLAME!!!
First is to get everything that is needed, best to get everything ready and setup.
1> You need to be on the Primary ROM that you want to be using, that will be the ROM you using daily. My is AJ'S ROM NOTE7 PORT at the moment of creating this Guide and Steps.
2> You need to download the other ROM that you want to Dual Boot with. My is WANTED ROM as at now.
3> You need to download the DualBootPatcher app from the link https://dbp.noobdev.io/
4> You need to install the DualBootPatcherAndroid app on your Primary ROM.
5> After installation of the DualBootPatcherAndroid app, open it and it will ask you to set kernel and reboot, do as it instructed you to do... But, if it did not ask you to reboot your device that fine but if it said you should reboot then don't be a hero, just reboot.
6> Open the DualBootPatcherAndroid again if you reboot your phone, click on ROM and you see just your Primary ROM with a tick. Press the 3 dash on the top left hand of the phone.
7> Click on Patch Zip File, and click on the plus(?) button at the bottom of the right side of the phone.
8> Navigate to where the Second ROM is that you want to Dual Boot, and click on it, something will pop up with info about your device, leave that and click on the Partition Configuration and you will see list of where to install the ROM. You can choose Data Slot or Extsd Slot. Let me explain :
Data Slot: If you have space size you can choose Data Slot as you install more apps your space size will be reducing and you might end up with "Insufficient Space" message.
Extsd Slot: if you choose that then the ROM will be install in your ExtSdCard but the Data Files will be install in the phone memory but the System Files will be in the Memory Card.
9> After choosing your choice for installing the ROM, you now have to choose ID for the ROM, it's a name you want to call it. Now mind you, if you want to install any other thing ZIP files from recovery to this ROM, you MUST name it the same name and follow the process starting from number 6. If your satisfy with the ROM name you choose, then click "Continue". Then choose where you want to save the new ROM, and the click save.
10> Now reboot to recovery and navigate to where you save the new ROM and flash it as normal. You need not worry cause it will be installed in the new name that you named it.
11> After installation, reboot as normal, it will take longer than 10 to 15 minutes to show the Setup Screen but don't worrying it doing it's thing in the background. To know you on track, when it's restarting and you see the light at the very top left side of the phone ON,* then you know you on track, just leave it and soon you be greeted with the Setup screen of the ROM.
12> From the Setup Screen you definitely should know what to do.
13> When you've COMPLETED the Setup, the next thing to do is to install the DualBootPatcherAndroid app, that is what you be using to Switch ROMS.
14> To Switch ROMS:
I> Open the DualBootPatcherAndroid app
II> Press the 3 dash on the top left hand of the phone
III> Click on ROMS (for the first time it will ask to Set Kernel, go ahead and do it)
IV> Click on the ROM you want to Switch to (the one with a tick is the one it will always boot up whenever your device restart)
V> Reboot the device.
VI> Once Reboot, you be on the selected ROM.
Go ahead and Explore the DualBootPatcherAndroid app. But whatever you do. DO NOT MESS WITH YOUR PRIMARY ROM UNLESS YOU UNDERSTAND AND KNOW WHAT YOU DOING.
That's ALL there's to it. I hope this Guide been Helpful and easy to Understand. I Might FLASH my Phone from Scratch to create a Video Guide if I happen to find myself something to record with.

@faqeeh.f,
Kindly follow the Guide and Steps. Instruction is not to add anything. Nothing will conflict with anything cause the DualBootPatcherAndroid app will sort it out.
Once again people, just follow the Guide and Steps as it is... Is that too hard to understand

I'm glad to be able to support one way or the other, that's why we ALL here to give support, to get the best among the best for our devices world wide:good:
As for the question you asked, I can't tell now cause I've 3 ROMS running on my device... WANTED ROM 6.3, AJ'S ROM 2.2, and CM-13.0.
What I'll do later today is to wipe everything and start from scratch and give the information details you asked for and be able to tell you.
