So I selected photo to delete and it somehow selected albums. So now Almost all my important pictures and videos are gone. I downloaded several apps and got back a good bit of pictures but I did not recover any videos. I read several pages about rooting the phone to actually get all the stuff back. Is this something that needs done? Also doesn't rooting wipe your phone so would that get rid of the deleted items? I am so devastated those pictures were my life and like an idiot I didn't back them up. Any ideas on how I can recover them?
Any ideas? I read an article saying you can root the phone and still recover deleted items but want to see what you guys think.

If your files were stored internal there's a big chance that the rest might've got overwritten by other applications. On SD-Card you might be able to get more back but if you worked with it (meaning storing other files or probably even editing), it will most likely overwrite them.
Since every phone behaves different I can't say what you should use. I can only say what I read the most people suggesting.
They talk about the program recuva, which runs on your computer. After connecting your phone to your pc, they say you should run a 'deep scan'.
I never used it myself so I can't say if it works. You'd have to search how to use it.

Rooting might also help in your favor, because those apps have more access to the storage and can perform actions normal apps can't do in there rather limited workspace.
But rooting also means writting/modifying data on your phone which could use the space where the remainings of your files are stored (deppends if they are internal or external/sd-card).
But from my expirence on pc, chances are very slim that you get all of your files back. I accidentally formatted my hard disk and after force stopping the process I only could restore about ~30% of my files (and most of them were corrupted).
You see formating or deleting doesn't actually delets stuff.
You could see all your stored files as a book and the index is that what you can see in your file manager. When you delete something it doesn't touches the file at first, it only deletes the entry in the index that a file was at that point in your storage and tells the system that place is free to use again. So apps will begin using that free space. After that it becomes almost imposible to get the file back.

i've returned 2 note pro's thinking they were defective and realising now that the issue of rebooting was due to a corrupted file in my system, i have identified it is one of my comics files i had stored years ago on cd disc, the problem is there are like 1000 comics i can't check each one individually.. does anyone know of an app or a way to scan the tablet to find the rogue corrupt file?
originally when it caused the reboot the comics were stored on my sd card, the second time stored in the device storage and third time in device storage again.. apart from checking one by one is there a short cut way that will tell me which file is damaged?
i know years ago i remember encountering one of the comics would not open that was the corrupt file however i cannot remember which one it was it was years ago i last checked.
A simple corrupted non system file shouldn't be causing the issue. However a simple look at file sizes may point to an issue, it may be more related to filename structure if very long or has non standard naming conventions not used in Unix.
If you have the files on cd and are moving over just move a portion over at a time to narrow the problem down.

Connect it to a computer and let explorer search for 0kb files. Ignore the .nomedia and playlist files.
Any mediafiles that show up as 0kb are corrupt.

Thanks maybe it is a file name issue. Im definitely sure it's the comics as all 3 have rebooted constantly because of iti just cant figure out wht it is. Is a filename which is too long likely to cause reboot?
i know it's not a software or firmware issue per se but i can't figure it out what's causing the reboot. Whenevr i play videos and lock the screen it reboots but it's only after i transferred the comics over

Only alphabet, numbers, underscores and dashes should be used, spaces are not great(depends on what you are doing). basically nothing else should be used(there are exceptions depending on Unix version but this is Linux) or Linux will hate the naming convention. Dots are fine also.
Did you load a comic app to read these or are they just. Jpg or similiar?

I have about 80.000 pdf's and comics in one folder. ALL have spaces in the name.
Comics are usually in cbr, cbz (both are .zip variants) or pdf format. Can you honestly imagine having to load every single page in jpg? Lol.
Exclude the folder from mediascanner by dropping a .nomedia file in it, and scan the thing with Windows Explorer or Apple Finder for 0kb files. (regular search, in english the string is size:empty ) That should be more than sufficient.

Being unfamilar with how comics are stored is why I asked...
Spaces can be problematic based on operating system and interface, Unix nor Linux like them so I avoid at all costs. Just because an app allows you to read them doesn't mean it cannot be an issue.
Unix interpretes a space as space between commands when using command line, since OP problem may be when files are being read outside shot a weird combo is actually causing an issue.
When switching between Windows, Unix, VMS worlds and having them all need to read all files properly either from web servers being hosted on them or from applications being run locally, spaces are one of the biggest issues. That and forward and back slashes.

they are scanned comics from the 90s i had the stored for about 10years theyre .cbr files optimised for reading in comic apps like perfect viewer.
do you have any idea what is causing the reboot? ive removed the files now no more reboot..very frustrating.
f sake it seems the reboot is back despite removing all the comics...not as much as before only once since this morning howeve it is back..it didnt happen once when i got the tablet till up till putting the comics in..however i havent really been using the tablet since then watching videos or doing anything intensive tbh so it's hard to say the cause..do you think it's definitely a rogue app or firmware issue rather than hardware?
this is the 3rd tablet i have had the first one kept rebooting all the time..i updated to the latest firmware and disabled all the apps i could that i dont use.. on my replacement i kept it as simple as possible i kept the original firmware but did not disable any apps let it run as normal as possible but did add the comics in..in the morning it rebooted.. so i returned it. now this one is the third time and it's so annnoying i have to think that if ALL 3 are rebooting it cant be a hardware issue right? i cant be that unlucky that all 3 have hardware issues so surely it must be right to assume it is all firmware related etc?

I think maybe the sd card may have some things in it from the comics but i removed the sd card and it still randomly reboots could my contacts crashing be the reason? I disabled contacts and contacts storage as i do not need itif idont it keeps bri gingup the warning unfortunately contacts has stopped.

im not rooted so cant do dalvik wipe. Wht on earth could be causing it?
like i said ithas been fine since i got it before i put the comics in i removed the comics factory reset and it keeps rebooting still what the hell i honestly can't figure this out all 3 did the same thing im about to give up
I'm not sure what you are doing after a factory reset but what I would do is remove any SD card and do a factory reset again. I would not allow restoration of any other software (when you get to the portion of setup where it asks if you want to automatically backup and restore day no) and I would simply run the device bare bones for a day or two without installing anything to rule out any application that I might be installing.

ok so i rebooted a 2nd time (jeez im getting fed up of this) and did not load the sd card just incase i also decided to set up a brand new gmail account so that it does not sync my contacts from the other google account in case that was the issue.
so far so good. i also formatted the sd card did not transfer the comics over and all is good.. now i do not know whether it is indeed the comics or whether it's because of my contacts storage on the other google account i originally used.. and i dont really want to test it to find out..originally when i used the previous google account and did not add any comics it did not reboot once.. so what's weird is after the first factory reset where i did not format the sd card as soon as i left it in the sd slot it casued the reboot later no matter what i did.. how the hell is this thing so sensitive that it reboots just by having the sd card in..its like there's a file in there that as soon as u put the sd card in it causes a reboot.. remeber i removed all the comics from the sd card previously and the device and it kept rebooting inexplicably..
so right now i can't figure out if it's the fact i formatted the sd card and factory resetted it or whether it's because i use a new google account?
do any of you guys know how or why something as innocuous as comic books or remnants of it in the sd card is causing a reboot?
Given that the best way to troubleshoot technical issues is to approach things in a logical fashion it's important to isolate things one at a time. You can either do that by removing one thing at a time OR by starting fresh and adding things one at a time.
Just to explain my previous post . . . if someone asks the question at times like this whether or not it's a hardware issue the first thing I jump to is to yank the SD card, factory reset (personally I prefer a full wipe to stock using Kies and a factory image file) and then to NOT install anything on the device . . that right there is fresh out of the box experience with no external influences other than any updates to preinstalled applications. If a person has the same issues with that then there's likely a hardware issue. Sometimes I see people assuming that they're not installing software after initial setup when in fact they are when they opt into Google's automatic backup/restore feature during lyncing to their Gmail account during setup. Its rare but it happens and at that point they're not evaluating a stock out of box experience, obviously.
Back to your last post . . its possible that your SD card has a bad sector on it and the act of formatting it simply erased files that would otherwise be scanned by media server/index services which was causing the reboot. One way to rule that out would be to use a computer and try to do memory testing of the card.
It can be difficult to narrow these issues down, as said I would run bone stock with no sdcard for a few days not even adding a Google account or any updates and see what happens. Google updates have caused me a few issues on other devices when updating an app and needed reinstalled even to clean things up is why i suggested no updating anything. The system is not going to scan the sdcard or use data off it unless called upon to do so. Adding sdcard and if a problem still switch to another even.
Recently a friend had a card that would only read certain movie files and then if reloaded onto card wouldn't read it then. Card was found to be bad(well it works for some files anyways) didn't show bad sectors either.

well guys the tablet hasn't rebooted since meaning it must have been something in the comics which as soon as you add it to sd card or device storage and even if you remove all it's contents still leaves a lasting effect unless i format the sd card and factory reset.. i hate factory reseting it's such hassle going one by one spending days trying bit by bit when it really should just work out of the box with no problem.. however this prob isnt a samsung fault it's a rogue file or something in my comics folder which i cant figure out what it is?
do you know anyway i can scan the comics folder which is now on my laptop so i can fix it for any errors?

im just fed up because i returned my original black wasted loads of petrol going round tryna find the same colour elsewhere ended up with white returned that and had to travel other part of town for the last black one and in process it's ended up costing me an extra 15 pounds total to get it as i lost the cashback i got buying the original and returning it plus the petrol plus also by returning i lost a goodwill refund.
anyway on plus side this one has less backlight bleed so pleased with that however the screen flickering issue concerned me which the other 2 did not have.. i've updated the firmware so no more flickering during video playback however i dont use high brightness so hard to say.. i do see random flickers from time to time but i think it may be slight glitches so bit paranoid.
anyway what is the best way to scan my comics folder in windows to identify bad sectors or anything corrupt that would cause the note pro to reboot?
i dont want to put comics back on or even read from a separate sd card as the evidence shows it'll reboot again unless i get to the root cause.
I am willing to go through setting up ADB on my PC if I can then dump the phones internal storage. Does anyone know if I can do that with a Verizon Pixel XL 2 that is NOT rooted? My understanding is I am unable to root a verizon Pixel 2 XL.
We are pregnant due to IVF and I have ultrasound and other important pictures on my phone. This morning I had been in my "camera" folder within the stock photo app and it was responding very slowly. I had not restarted in sometime so I exited the app and went back to my main screen. I then used the power button and selected restart on my phone.
Upon restart I have no "Camera" folder at all within the app. Internal storage went from ~2GB to over 23GB. I checked trash and while there are pictures I had recently deleted within the trash folder the Camera folder or its contents were not in that folder. I checked Archives as well as I checked photos.google.com I had previously not used the google cloud backup so didn't expect them to be there and they were not, lesson learned.
I downloaded disk digger and was able to pull thumbnails of a lot of these pictures, which makes me believe if I could create an image of the internal memory I may be able to use photorec or similar to find the pictures.
I am not versed in this area, but am willing to learn and read etc to attempt to recover these pictures.
We went through a lot to get to the 4.5 month pregnancy mark and I have no idea why the entire folder was deleted, I presume my restart must have caused that file to be deleted somehow. I have had my phone off for most of the day while at work to eliminate the overwriting of data in my attempt to preserve as much prior data as possible.
Any and all help is appreciated. At this point I am thinking I can dump an image of my internal memory and then use photorec to get to it, but since this is a verizon variant I am reading I am unable to root, so I am hoping I can still somehow dump an image to try to recover these photos.
Does anyone know if I can do that with ADB or similar program and then use photorec on the image?
Very sorry to hear that as those are truly irreplaceable pictures.
ADB will do nothing for the type of work you want to do. It has no capability to dump anything, only execute commands on the Android OS from a connected debugger. Attempting to recover deleted/missing items requires low level access to the storage hardware and is even more difficult on flash storage than it is on magnetic storage. What you're talking about would likely require physically removing the flash storage and accessing it with specialized hardware.
Hi everyone,
Two days ago, accidentally I managed to delete all the photos of my camera album on my S6 Edge (SM-G925F).
I long tapped the album in gallery, just as i would have done with a photo then clicked delete.
It seemed to take too long, so I clicked cancel. But it was too late. All was gone.
I have well, most of them backed up but still missing quite a few.
So far I tried to recover using the following apps:
Dr. Fone (both on the device itself and from computer).
UltData for Android (from laptop),
Dumpster Recover (on the phone),
DiskDigger (on phone)
But all they show me is photos that are still available on the device, or are in some app cache. ( Profile pics of people on Facebook, etc...)
Note: I tried all these methods both before and after rooting the device. (I read somewhere that rooting might help, but I simply get more crap...)
The device is running Android 7.0 (the latest update from Samsung.)
Has anyone managed to recover lost photos from an S6 so far?
What apps would you recommend?
Why can I not see those pics anywhere?
Does samsung have some special way to erase your storage if u delete your photos?
I cannot seem to find many search results about it, probably not many people use this device anymore

Probably no longer recoverable after DrFone.
Pay the fee and get what it can recover.
It encrypts its results (using up more drive space) and presumably makes the original data inaccessible to other recovery apps.
Recovered jpegs files will be disassociated from their exif files though; no timestamps, original #, shooting or location data.
The only way to reliably prevent data loss is to redundantly back it up before it happens, unfortunately.
I did pay the fee, but it cannot find them either...
In the main window it showed 1090 photos, on the side it showed it found 10 000, but at recovery it got stuck at around 5000....

Make sure it has all needed permissions.
No clue how to use that app. Try their support and Google search to try to find out what's going on.
Don't mess with that app or anything on the phone or you may lose what it found completely.
Normally I say clear app data and the system cache but NOT in this case!

Most of them is backed up just the ones in the last few months aren't.
It turned out during a chat with their support not long ago, that my phone is not supported by their app, and i will get a refund from them.
But the question stands...Is there any app out there that supports the recovery from an SM-G925F?

Hi, I recorded a video of sentimental value on my P40 pro and tried to move it straight from the safe to a USB stick with a type C attachment. The video is like 1.5GB and when I moved it it just disappeared.
I have noticed a couple of folders on the stick with a .nomedia file in them, not sure if they're what is remaining or they are from before.
I don't have a restore point to retrieve the video so I am understandably annoyed and don't want to fork out money on software if it won't work.
Any ideas would be appreciated?, I did try the free version of UltData but couldn't find it, HiSuite etc.
Losing porn can be traumatic... in the future copy/paste instead then delete the source.
I never use secure folder or encrypt data drives because you are the one most likely to be locked out.
There are free recovery apps from WD and Lexar that run on Windows. -If- it's on the stick they can recover it.
Recovery from the phone is a much more tricky proposition if even possible. If it was me, I would have already written it off. If you're hell bent on trying to recover it, stop using that phone and take it to a data recovery $pecialist.

My S22 ultra was giving me warnings for being close to full on the memory. I had to have Google backup off for work reasons, work provided phone. I normally use Android file transfer and make copies on a Mac computer.
The usb was giving my fits and i couldnt connect. I ended up using a Windows pc and i started coping over my pics. The windows track pad glitched and i deleted the new file and the old file on both the PC and the S22. My Camera folder was missing on the S22 where the phone default saves.
Ive tried a bunch of the data recovery apps and none work. I have read you need root to be able to see the delete files as they stay on the device until over written.
Is there truth to needing root to see the deleted files. I havent rooted a device in probably close to 10 years so the easiest method would be awesome.

The files are lost especially if you ran out of memory; likely overwritten by now.
Always copy/paste to backup.
Keep work and personal phones separate.
In lieu of expandable storage use a OTG flashstick in the future. Thank Samsung for taking away your easiest, most sane option... on a flagship none the less.

There is no guarantee that with root you'd be able to recover lost files. You only have a better chance.

To root, you need an unlocked bootloader first.
If you unlock your bootloader, the process will wipe everything on your device. So you need to backup whatever files you have before proceeding with the unlock process, i.e. you have no chance of recovering already deleted files.
How come your files in PC that were deleted aren't in the recycle bin?

It happens from time to time. When it happens if the source file is gone so is the data, unrecoverable.
That's why you always copy/paste rather than cut/paste critical data. Delete the source file only after the transfer is verified.

So the files disappeared because he was cut-pasting them, and not 'deleted' as he wrote. Now I understood what actually happened.
Yep nothing in any recycle bins. I was able to recover all the files on the PC side but they are corrupt and won't open. I've used several different programs to recover and to fix the corrupt files. I normally triple and quadruple backup everything. I used to test devices so i was constantly swapping SIMs so I used to save all the time. The program ended and I've been on this s22 since it came out and I became complacent with updating. It sucks a wipe is needed. I was hoping the files were just hidden like PC and Mac when deleted and easily archived. Thanks for the comments, I learned a hard lesson and I knew better.

That won't save you if the file is lost during transfer. Seen it happen enough to know.
It's different from deleting a file with the trash bin active. You need to be careful of that with critical data.
Never clone media files ie discs, partitions either, always copy/paste. Cloning or compacting media like .wav files can toss the null marks and they are needed and functional in that context.
Never encrypt data drives... as you are the most likely one to get locked out.

Like I said, he didn't explain properly.
I have lost files too with a cut-paste, so I'm aware of this problem.
This is why on macOS, they don't give you a 'cut' or move (except move to bin) option, but only 'copy'. Those who are absolutely sure they need to cut will have to use the 'Option' key to make it show up.

Always leave enough head room on Android internal memory. It can putt along like that for a while with just warnings until one day... boom.
If you're seeing warnings you're cutting it way too close. Leave at least 10% headroom. Lol, I played that wicked game with my S4+, 16gb isn't much.
Samsung should have a base starting at least 256gb internal memory in this day and age especially if they were rude enough to drop expandable storage. Since the N10+ I haven't been pleased with the Samsung flagships; they all have multiple issues. As such I haven't bought any. Samsung continues their ball dropping fest unabated. Here Sammy this Bud's for you
