About to get a tmobile sg note5... some questions... - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note5

Hello to the greatest comunity...
Im about to get a tmobile note 5 next week (very excited by the way), my prior handheld was the sg s6 edge+ that i lost a couple a months ago (very sad for that) the thing is, i used to root my devices before the s6 edge+ (a couple of samsung models and a htc) im looking to root the device as soon as i can put my hands on it and im looking for a stock ROM but DEBLOATED and without the HOTSPOT THETERING LIMITATION...
I want to keep the phone almost stock for now, i dont want to get crazy flashing all kinds of things how i used to do with my other devices...
Can somebody guide me to the best root way and to a debloated therering restriction free stock ROM for the tmobile note 5 SM-N920T 32gb? Really apriciate the orientation, thanks in advanced...

Or at least, there is a way to avoid the thetering restriction?
No, foxfi does not work...

T-Mobile just removed most of the tethering restrictions yesterday. AFAIK

am i stuck on 5.0.2

Since the new Edge s6 is comming, are we not getting update?
Im starting to hate the phone, with the ram problem.
sometimes apps lag too due to the ram
The Verizon variant of the S6 and S6 edge are still having their 5.1.x tested. We will most likely see that update before the end of summer assuming there are no delays or they don't skip any releases. The production and release of the S6 edge plus doesn't have any effect on the older phones getting updates as they have already been released by Samsung.
We just need to wait as this is Verizon we're talking about.

Thats good. Im guessing 5.1 wont fix the ram tho?
Even if the update doesn't fix the ram issues I just want the update to be rootable. I purchased a white version of the s6 and I'm stuck without root because the seller took the update. I had one prior that was rooted and everything seemed to work better with a debloated rom.

I fear that most of us rooted folks will have a hard choice between keeping root @5.0.2 vs upgrading to 5.1 loosing root...
I sold a nexus 6 cos i wasnt too into roms/etc and wanted to run stock tw on the S6, now i have to root to get a decent experience on the s6?
What the hell lol

S6 edge rooted or note 5 stock??

Here's my dilemma.... I have a s6 edge rooted and running a custom Rom. My friend purchased a note 5 but wants to trade straight up because he really wants root and feels the note 5 is a little too big. What would you do in this situation? Both phones are black and Verizon 64gb. I'm so torn because I know the note 5 won't see root anytime in the near future

I never had the edge but I had the S6 with root and without. I can honestly say root did nothing performance wise for me, the phone worked great both ways. Yes I would prefer a rooted phone but with the debloat tool you can disable (hide) any app on the phone without root, foxfi works for tethering and themes are built in. If it's the bigger screen you want and don't mind loosing root it's a fair trade. Value wise I would say you are getting the better deal because the Note is worth more and it's newer.

You make some valid points. I think I'm going to stick with my rooted edge and here's why.
1. Adaway, I hate adds especially on certain apps.
2. Flashfire, I have the ability to flash roms. I'm running a custom Rom now that seriously increased the overall feel and speed of my phone.
3. I included the ram tweak which resolved the ram management issue.
4. I can flash custom themes!! Yes Samsung has a theme store, but it doesn't compete with akonda theme (yes that is spelled right)
5. My battery life is equal to the note 5 print screens I've seen posted on xda.
6. I really plan in buying the new nexus because I miss the dev community. Plus I love having a phone that works for any carrier 100%.
Don't get me wrong, if the note 5 for Verizon magically gets root I will buy the phone cash same day

It definitely sounds like the Note 5 isn't the ideal phone for you. It for sure won't satisfy the crack flasher in you lol. For me I'm happy where I am, between all the phones I've switched to lately and all the ROMs I made I burnt myself out for a while. Just this year I went through a bunch of phones. I had the Note 4 retail and Dev, Droid turbo, S6, S5, LG G4, M8 and now the Note 5. 8 different phones and a few I switched back to and from. It's time for a break and enjoy what I have.
Try adguard ....no root required but it's 9.00 for a year

I'm right there with you bother lol, I've had this year alone note 4, note edge, nexus 6, iPhone 6 plus, and now s6 edge. I think by far the biggest selling point of any phone is the ability to use the phone on all the big U.S carriers. I've also been struggling with switching to T-Mobile. I have two lines with unlimited data for the wife and I with Verizon. I'm tired of this phone bill $200 a month is out of control.

Call customer service and tell them you are going to switch. I did and I ended up getting $30.00 off my monthly bill yesterday and when my three contracts run out soon it will be an additional $25.00 off every month per line. If you are not on it it's the customer loyalty plan. I'm only on a 4 gig plan but we hardly use one so it's plenty for us. Either way i would call them I was at $235 or so every month. I did look into T-Mobile but it isn't worth it. After the equipment charges for the new phones and insurance the savings would have only been $10 a month and inferior coverage. If you own your own phones and get good service with them it might be worth it. Cricket was a good option for me too but Verizon beat their price.

I too looked into t-mobile a little while ago, but did not find to much savings. I think carriers are starting to get on board with their pricing. Wanting to squeeze a little more out of customers since verizon and att do.

Thanks for sharing those reasons. I have been struggling with the same question ... S6 Edge or the Note 5. Was leaning towards the Note 5 because of the 4GB of system RAM and S-Pen, but I am concerned about the RAM management issues so many people have reported. Being as locked down as the VZW version is, there is no way to fix the issue without waiting for Samsung to fix it. The extra RAM becomes pointless if you can take advantage of it.
I didn't realize that you could run custom ROMs on the Verizon S6 Edge. I knew there was root but didn't realize you could flash a recovery and install custom ROMs. That would be a big reason to go for the S6 Edge in my opinion. Especially since Root access would let me fix the Ram issues as you have done. Would you happen to have a link to the thread that showed you how to install the custom ROMs for the S6 Edge? Thanks!

So there's a choir items to address.
1. You have to be on firmware oe2 or lower in order to root. You will never be able to upgrade your firmware or root will be lost, probably forever...
2. You can find the information in the Verizon s6 edge development thread.
3. I ended up trading for the note 5 because it's worth more in eBay right now, bigger screen, spen, and the bottomline it's running newer firmware.
Since Foxfi and adguard work extremely well the note 5 will hold me over until the nexus huawei comes available. I'm done with lock bootloaders and receiving slow updates

Verizon Note Edge Root Woes, Inquiry about direction & Community Advice

Hey all,
I know this has been asked and andwered but basically, I've been waiting for a long time now for the ability to root and place a custom ROM on my Samsung Galaxy Note Edge from VZW.
I don't get the feeling that any developers are working on a fix or process whereby this will be possible.
i paid retail for this phone because I didn't have a free upgrade yet. Am I going to have to buy a NEW full retail on a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge on order to get this capability??
i guess I am just frustrated as I have been waiting since about this time last year or so.
Let me know the thoughts of the community if you wouldn't mind. I'd appreciate it. I love Samsung so I want to stay with it unless there is major reason to change for quality, performance or other key reasons. and if I am going to have to buy a NEW one, what would you all go with and why? Even if it means waiting a bit for a better phone to come out.
Thanks so much for the answers, suggestions and opinions in advance! You all rock!!!!

I've been waiting also. The edge was a bit of an experiment for samsung so it didn't sell as many. And it seems there's a bigger base of users from Sprint and AT&T. And lastly Verizon's version seems to be the hardest to root. I'd love to have a custom Rom because this stock rom runs like crap. It's slow with many errors. I regret buying this phone

Thanks for spelling out the very reason I want a custom ROM. Mine works ok but it shouldn't freeze up on the gapps.... Stuff like that. Not a phone newb either, just had to try out the edge feature because it looked so awesome. Sigh. Maybe more input? It seems the devs are done trying maybe?... .

I love the edge features and the design of the phone but this last update really made the performance worse. I even did a factory reset after the lollipop update but it still runs slow. I don't see us getting any help with root. There may have been some movement with the Verizon edge developers edition because it was unlocked

How does locked BL effect you?

Well since there is to be no root or recovery we are left with discussion and mods/apps which do not require root.
My question to the group is how does this phone being locked down effect you. Many say they will wait and hope, others saying returning/selling ASAP and still others are saying this phone doesn't need it.
As far as how it effects me? Not a whole lot, Android has come a long way and this phone is super solid. I feel that this version of Touchwiz is non intrusive even less so than the Note 5 which barely lasted a month. I do appreciate root, and when I can, I always root. For me the biggest problem is Samsung's abhorrent updating. Sure we get special treatment over older still supported devices but let's keep it real Samsung sucks. After a year Samsung magically becomes even slower. I also greatly appreciate a stock Google experience. I will probably sell this bad boy. Once my bogo comes through
I currently have Nexus 5x and Nexus 6. And am undecided as to which one I will keep although leaning towards Nexus 6. I may end up keeping s7 edge until Nexus 2016 comes out, but that option is looking unlikely
If I had known ahead of time the S7 bootloader was locked I would have bought the wife and I Nexus 6 devices and then gone to Project FI
yea sux when i found this out. but remember AT&T bootloaders were always locked down well for the most part and DEVs have always found a way to do it or work around it. I know u guys remember The days of the Loki patches rainbow recoveries etc..lol . phone has only been out a week give it some time fellas have faith in our DEVs they are the BEAST! IT WILL HAPPEN dont ask me how i just know these guys never disappoint!
in the mean time if u haven't already check this out these dudes are sweet they have instructions for non rooted requires a $2 app but worth it for now I confirm they work on my S7, cheers

I waited months for my LG G4 to get root and a bootloader unlock. Finally got cm13 and just a short time later upgraded to the S7... I miss cm13, but it'll just take some time and it'll be back on my phone.
How does it effect me, we'll it means that I don't actually own my $800. Pocket computer. I am not the administrator so my info can be easily stolen and the device can be crippled by limiting updates. It's basically a $800. Device that will be current for 4 months. Garbage.

Mine's going back tomorrow, unless there's some news. I figure that I can just re-purchase it once/if BL is unlocked, or check out the G5.
Going to do the jump to the g5 most likely.. I didnt have to root my g4 to get the software how I like it. There is just too much samsung integration here to get around it all without having lots of minor annoyances (no major ones, just lots of little **** I dont like).
Locked BL affects me moderately. I prefer lower DPI so without xposed/app settings, the camera/video calls aren't full screen. I also lose the ability to customize the phone (xposed/wanam). I have a harder time transferring apps (no Titanium Backup). I miss out on the whole reason for liking Snapdragon over exynos (kernels, CM). I never considered returning the phone (t-mobile's BOGO free + 2 yr netflix + $60 + wireless chargers from Samsung Pay + 2 GearVR was a ridiculous deal). I have considered selling/swapping for a 930F (all it would take is VOLTE + native video dialing and I'd swap immediately).
Just got my s7 today . . Retired my note 3 after years of use .... s7 is awsome right out the box ... very fast battery is great ... happy with the purchase

Pretty much using Nexus 6 on project Fi. It's interesting not using as much data but I do like the service. Going between sprint and T-Mobile has been nice. I have no real desire to go to 6p now. I am really hoping that Google will release another 6 inch phone soon. If it's only 5.5 I will be disappointed but will still probably get the next Nexus
My Nexus 6 is unrooted, I just know Samsung won't get Android N until the Note 6 is released

Note 7 and it's fate

Given the fact that Samsung rolled out all the Snapdragon s7 and s7e with locked bootloaders, I have little to no hope for the note 7. What do you guys think about its chances of coming with an unlocked bootloader?

If you want a rooted samsung phone in the future you will all need to buy the international models.
Thats why I purchased the S7 EDGE G935F international model a few weeks ago. All the international samsung phones are very easily rooted and none of them have locked bootloaders.

Oh ok...seems like a few people are having issues with that method (as most new root methods), but it's definitely a start in the right direction.

I've seen both sides on it, some got issues and some are reporting that everything is okay. Another interesting aspect is people reporting this doesnt trip knox, while being rooted samsung pay doesnt work but when they revert knox still shows 0x0.

They my understanding is knox remains 0x0 because it uses a repair kernel

Crazy how there is not much talk about the Note 7 with it only about 2 weeks away. I am really mixed about getting it still since I know it is going to be locked. The only thing that is really holding me back at this point is not being able to use Viper. There are a couple of other things that would be nice to still be able to do but those aren't major. Android has come a long way and the need for a custom rom just isn't what it used to be. I really like the Note line and prefer to stay with it so I may just bit the bullet and go without root. Whether I get it at launch will also depend on the special offers they are giving out. I got the Year of Netflix and free VR with the S7 Edge before I returned it so if they have a simular offer, I will probably jump on it.

I was just thinking this same thing...i own my note 5 outright so i may just trade it in if there's a good deal...progress has been made with root on the s7's so I'm hopeful similar leaps are made...nonetheless, i have to say, my girls note 5 is bone stock unrooted and with few exceptions there's little that can't be done...for her nothing, and for me, well, I'm just finally learning to develop on Linux so i definitely want to keep SOME rootable device in my stable as well, but that's might end up meaning a second device (next nexus?) and swapping my sim around smh...it's just that usb3.0, ip68, 256gb storage and 6gb ram PLUS a true edge screen is almost too much to resist, root or not, plus there's always samsung pay while it's still 0x0...i see myself getting it, only question is when and will i also spent flagship money on a second device (OP3? nexus? Htc?- pretty much all are sd820...) until a good root method or unlocked bootloader becomes a reality....

I'm always with 2 phones, 1 is usually a nexus device, the note series have been my go to though. I'll likely get the N7 and do what I can do to it with in the confines of no super user. Nexus devices are so cheap, you can always pick up one for around $200, excluding the 6p. The devs here on XDA are top notch, so I'm always confident they'll come up with something.

Well a locked bootloader is a locked bootloader in most cases. The s7 exploit is really just a Samsung repair kernel that was leaked that's really not fit for prime time, unfortunately...
And even that is still limited in no custom recovery or roms, just stock debloat, xposed, viper/etc...

All the future samsung usa phones which are branded tmobile, at&t, sprint and verizon will have locked bootloaders
If you want a rooted samsung phone in the future you will all need to buy the international models.
Thats why I purchased the S7 EDGE G935F international model a few weeks ago. All the international samsung phones are very easily rooted and none of them have locked bootloaders.
And to top it off all the samsung international phone models come sim unlocked .
Good luck.

I wouldn't say can't, it can in fact happen and has. It just isn't easy. There are snapdragon devices that never got stable CM builds. Just in the case with the exynos, the odds aren't in their favor.
If I do get the Note 7, which I probably will, it will be with the knowledge that if most likely will never be unlocked. I have been running pure stock and not even rooted for a couple weeks now to see how unrooted life is. I have been rooted and running a custom rom for several years now. Like I said before, there are some cool features in custom roms but the need for them just isn't what it used to be. The only thing I am truly missing is Viper. So for me it comes down to the simple question of which is more important. What is more important, all of the new features of the new phone or the ability to use Viper.
I swore I wouldn't buy a locked phone and would move to the Nexus line but based on the rumors of the next Nexus phones, I am not thrilled with them. I just don't see anything that I would rather move to over the Note 7 based on what we know so far. That along with the fact that I am on the original Jump program so without needing to buy the phone outright, I need to pick from T-Mobiles selections.
A lot of the reasons to have root can be accomplished with apps so life without root isn't a huge deal for me anymore. I just wish there was a Viper alternative that can be used without root. Anyone know of one?
