I decided to change my default SMS/MMS app after playing around with some better alternatives to Samsung's "Messages" app. Only after I made the change did I learn that emergency alert messages (also known as CMAS or WEA messages) are handled exclusively by Samsung Messages.
This means 1. I can't actually delete or disable Samsung Messages or else I will lose CMAS/WEA altogether and 2. Every time I get an emergency alert, to read it I need to pass the "Make Messages your default SMS app" screen.
Is there a way to move CMAS/WEA handling to another app? Other Android variants seem to handle them in a dedicated app with its own settings in Android Settings. I am on stock (rooted) Marshmallow, build PG1.
I apologize if this has been answered elsewhere. Searching on CMAS, WEA, and "emergency alerts" turned up nothing.

I'm using the latest Cognition ROM, v2.3b6 and I've noticed since v2.3b2 that every SMS sent or received is now in the call log. I never saw this in the stock ROM or Cog v2.2b7.
It's really annoying when I want to scroll down to a recent number only to find that I've got to scroll through dozens of SMS messages depending on how many I've sent/received after a call to/from the number I am trying to locate.
Anyway to turn this off?
I've seen it in every 2.2 version I have tried. Unfortunately I know of no way to turn this off.
Can only hope when the source code drops it:
A) Will have an option to turn off
B) That Developers find a way to add that functionality
There is a way to customize the call log:
Phone->Logs->Menu->View by
Only problem is you cant have it show all calls (has to be either missed, dialed or received).
You can also stop that from happening by using Titanium Backup and "freezing" the stock messaging app. Doing so will stop all the logs from coming in and going out, but you also have to use a third-party messaging app. The only downside I've found to this so far, is the loss of MMS capability, but that could be an issue only with how Handcent is set up on my phone. Has anyone else tried this and still been able to use MMS (receive and send)?
I've been having an issue since the 4.4.1 update. I primarily use Textra for SMS/MMS and it's set as the default. However, I'm on a limited texting plan and use Google Voice for a few of the people I text with most frequently.
I have direct message shortcuts on my homepage for my main contacts. I used to (before the 4.4.1 update) be able to click them and get prompted for what program to use, Textra, Google Voice, anything else. Now, it always defaults to Textra.
I can go clear the defaults in Settings-Apps-Textra-Clear Defaults and it works normally for a few minutes. However, it always seems to set Textra back as the default SMS client eventually.
I'm trying to figure out a way to let my direct message shortcuts work again. I've factory reset and set up just enough to let me test again (Textra, Google Voice and a direct message shortcut), but it still does the same thing. I've tried with other SMS clients (8SMS, Hangouts) and the behavior is the same.
Can anyone think of a way to fix this? Is there a way to automate the Textra-Clear Defaults? Is there a way to create a Google Voice direct message shortcut? A way to fix Kit Kat so that I can use whatever texting app I want?
I'm running rooted stock so root solutions are fine. Would I have better luck with CM or something based off of it?
Thanks for any feedback!
Hi guys. My understanding is that this is specific to vodafone customers in particular so plenty of you may not experience this but every so often iam getting a pop up mentioning rich communications and to enter my number (which i have done) but i keep getting the same message! Today i clicked and held the message from the notification window and was then able to bring up app info and from there i could disable the app which was under 'messaging services' but now iam wondering if this will affect incoming and outgoing text messages? Although i dont actually use the defualt sms app.I use textra from the app store!
So I am what I would call a Tasker Beginner/Intermediate user. I have recently created a profile that triggers on the geofence of my local grocery store. The task waits 5 min, checks if the profile is still active and sends my wife a SMS asking if she would like me to pick something up.
I know she receives the SMS but it doesn't show up in either the stock messaging app or google messages app on my end. I have Messages set as default and thought that it may be playing up, so I made the built in Messaging (stock) app default and still nothing shows up in the conversation. I have also set up just a SMS task and manually fired it, SMS is received, just doesn't show on my end.
I have "Store in Messaging App" tickbox selected.
Has anyone else had issues with seeing the SMS that Tasker sends?
Matt.

Same issue here. I never noticed it because I dont have that option set but I just tried it and can verify the same result. I have posted a question on the Tasker group. Hopefully the developer can address the problem.
Thanks tboooe,
Good to know I'm not the only one. I'll find your post and sub to it.
I've had this issue before too. Also with using Join to SMS from my PC. I was told that it isn't an issue the developer can fix as it's really just something some phones and some messaging apps.
Anyone got any tips on getting message notifications on the GW4? I am using it with a Pixel 4a5g. I currently have loaded the updated Google messages app on phone and watch. I have enabled notifications everywhere I can find for the app. I can open the watch app and read all my messages, but I can't get any watch notifications. On my GWA2, using Next, I was able to get the notifications and the message would pop up on my watch and let me read it. On the GW4 I have to open the app to read it. I am also open to any other messaging apps that others have found that work.
Update, I did get Next SMS to work, but I wonder if anyone has had any luck with VZW messages or Google messages?
You have to make Google Messages to the default text message app on phone to get notifications from it, and you can only use Google Messages for writing SMS after that.
The first thing I did was make Google Messages the default SMS... as a matter of fact, you can't even bring it up on the phone unless you do that. I know Google is just starting to roll out a new version of messages for using with watches, I don't know how to tell if I have that version or what that version number is, so I guess I will use Next for awhile longer and see.
This feels like a Gear app permissions issue. Check that the gear app on your Phone has permissions to read messages. Also it might be under device admin setting or something like that
I assume you mean the Galaxy Wear app, it does have SMS permissions enabled (actually all permissions enabled).
Note, as I said above, it works like a champ with Next SMS, so I think everything is enabled that needs to be. The difference would have to be with the messaging app itself.
You can also check settings on the watch itself. Settings/Applications/Permissions then scroll to Messages and allow everything one by one.
