This morning i finally relented and installed the 4.4 update (kitkat?) on my droid razr maxx hd. now im stuck at the red M motorola splash screen thing. is there any way i can fix this? I went to verizon and they wouldent do anything for me. I need my phone for work every day so help is greatly appreciated. i also tried the power volume down to restore factory settings or whatever but it just goes to the M screen forever. the only thing that DOES come up from those menus is ap fast boot. not sure if thats helpful or not. PS im new to this stuff so noob friendly responses please!
Were you rooted at all? Did you modify your system in any way (froze or uninstalled stock apps)? If so, that's why.

That's your issue. You can't do an OTA after you've rooted since the OTA does a verification to ensure the system isn't modified in any way.
Go to the link I posted in my previous reply to you to get yourself updated to Kit Kat and then unlock you bootloader if you haven't since the KK update put the bootloader exploit back in.
ok

could you link me to the root/unlock tutorial for my phone? sorry im noob XD
Just to be sure, you didn't update to the latest soak that just came out, correct? You are on the previous Kit Kat OTA right?
If you haven't applied the latest soak (183.46.10.XT926), then you are golden and can unlock. ONLY apply the soak update AFTER you've unlocked your bootloader.
no

You should have just ignored the update until after you unlocked the phone. The link I sent you to was meant to get you updated to KK before the 183.46.10 update. The previous KK update allowed you to unlock your bootloader. Now, that is no longer possible. There is no way to downgrade to a previous version. Once the ability to unlock has been patched, you cannot go back and try to unlock it.
You can still root the phone, though. Search for towelroot and you can install that and run it to root your device.
One thing you could try is once you've rooted, try running Motopocalypse to see if it will unlock your bootloader. Either it will or it won't. It won't hurt your phone in any way or brick it.
lame...

WHOA! WHOA! WHOA! My bad. You should be okay to unlock!
Please go here and attempt it -> http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/46155-rootunlock-442-182183-razr-hdm-only/
Get Towelroot and run it. This should root your phone -> http://www.towelroot.com/
Next, get the motopocalypse apk from here -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53428225&postcount=22
Install and run that on your phone. That should then unlock your bootloader.
So, you are fine. I completely brain farted that the soak test hasn't been sent to everyone. It is available to download and install, but don't do it yet.
PLEASE go and unlock your phone. I'm so sorry for the confusion.
Let me know how it goes!

No, that is the version you CAN unlock. At first, it was believed it couldn't happen, but someone discovered that Moto had accidentally added the bootloader unlock exploit back in with the KK release. It's the version after that, which hasn't been released yet but will be soon, that patches the exploit back up to no allow it. The zip file for it is available outside of the soak test so it hasn't been sent to you. What you took was the OTA you do want which does allow unlocking.
Please, go unlock your phone now before the OTA is released and then you'll be forever locked.
Go here to unlock it -> http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/46155-rootunlock-442-182183-razr-hdm-only/
Do it now before you do anything else. Do NOT apply the soak test OTA (which is available via a media fire link from SamuriHL) until you've unlocked your phone.
done
Rooted and unlocked. Very happy about it. But now what? What can I get with bootloader unlocked besides revert to jb?
I still need to get my WiFi tether app to work. I'm grandfathered into unlimited data so my phone is basically my internet. Are there any cool ROMs where the WiFi just works with no tricks or work a rounds?
I have a google pixel xl. I am currently on 7.0 but just received notification that i have a 7.1.1 update waiting for me. I have rooted my phone's in the past but have not rooted or unlocked bootloader this time. Is it my understanding that once this update is received that it is not possible to unlock the bootloader and/or root? I would like to keep the rooting option open but at this time would like to stay on stock as i like having timely updates ota. The last phone/ROM i used, the developer kinda laxed on updates, plus additional issues that were not present on factory installed rom.

As long as you have a Pixel bought from Google and not Verizon you are fine to take the update. The Verizon variant ships with a locked bootloader that can't be unlocked without the intervention of dePixel8 on 7.1 firmware. The Google variety will always have the option to unlock bootloader / root.
You are on 7.1, not 7.0... the phone shipped at 7.1.

As I understand, the google phone should have no issues getting the bootloader unlocked. The verizon one cannot be unlocked from 7.1.1 (at least so far).
Beyond that, rooting can be done in 7.1 or 7.1.1.
I would suggest unlocking the bootloader and keeping it that way if you want to change anything.
(My suggestions are based on Google Pixel, and NOT the XL). I just noticed, but you're posting on the pixel forums btw.
Guys, I decided to opt in to the Android Q beta but unfortunately, no matter what I try, the OTA won't download and keeps pausing itself. So I decided to flash the system image from here: https://developer.android.com/preview/download.html
However, it seems like that requires a bootloader unlock.. The Verizon Pixel 3 has a locked bootloader (without possible unlock).. so it is possible to proceed while the bootloader is still locked? What might happen if I go ahead and execute "flash-all" script in fastboot?
Never mind this.. the OTA finally worked on cellular.. just never on wifi for some reason
Hello just a few minutes ago I manually searched for updates from the system setting (have auto update off) and realized I had an update so I took it. I've taken updates OTA before with no issues however this time it basically completely factory data reset my phone and also what's more bizarre is it removed my bootloader unlock that I had gotten way back when the phone was first released. I have never installed custom firmware or even rooted the device but I did get my bootloader unlocked using a paid service that I found about here. I have a snapdragon model note 20 ultra 5g. I am so confused why this time around the OTA affected these things. I have included a screenshot of the OTA I took. Can anyone tell me what happened to my bootloader unlock I've had for like 6 months ?
Do you have a U or a UI device? If so I think Samsung changed the bootloader from version 1 to version 2 and that might be why you lost it. Checkout the last 2 pages of this thread here where you might be able to get more clarification.
Whenever you lock or unlock your bootloader, you device will factory reset.
When you took the update, it updated the bootloader to version 2.
Since your unlock was not an official one, it relocked your bootloader in the process.
This is what caused the wipe.
Yup. You're not supposed to take ota updates with unofficial unlocked bootloader.
Not even sim unlock.

Nope. Not for US versions.
Why did you unlock the bootloader if you haven't ever rooted or flashed custom?

It sounded like a good idea at the time.
when unlocking the bootloader and there is a waiting period of 1-2 weeks but in the meanwhile the phone wants to update it's firmware, what to do?
- is the unlock process interrupted when the phone updates itself to the next miui version?
- or is it actually necessary to update to the new version to successfully finish the unlocking process? (f.i. the "unlock" process started with the old miui version but ends with a new miui version)
the community blog is not clear about that, anyone got experience with that?
EDIT: nevermind, already done. for those who want to know nevertheless: don't update the firmware while on a waiting period to unlock, just stick to the version you started unlocking the phone, it works. though, it might work with updating too I've not tested it.
