I've read numerous threads here and elsewhere on the web saying that if you have an old Straight Talk AT&T sim card you have to buy a new one to get LTE to work with your Nexus 5. This was not the case for me so I thought I'd share. I ended up calling Straight Talk to ask them about it and after waiting on the phone for 30-40 minutes they said they "enabled" LTE on my account. They then gave me the following APN settings to use:
Name: Straight Talk (can be whatever you want)
APN: tfdata
Port: 80
MMSC: http: //mms-tf.net (no space after http:, had to add one because I can't post links)
MMS Proxy: mms3.tracfone.com
MMS Port: 80
Keep in mind, the APN type is not set. I was skeptical that they had done anything at first because after using the seemingly lackluster APN settings they gave me I still wasn't connecting to the LTE network. However, after waiting a bit (maybe 30 minutes or so) my phone started connecting to the LTE network. The only thing I cannot get to work so far is receiving MMS messages. Also, it's worth noting that the Straight Talk person I spoke to didn't really sound like they knew what they were doing, so I feel like I kind of lucked out with this one.
************************* EDIT/UPDATE *************************
So my billing cycle finally started again since the above happened. It seems that whatever Straight Talk changed with my account from when I talked to them has been reset. With the above settings I no longer get a data connection at all and after my phone is on for so long it will just stop connecting to any cellular service at all. I changed my APN settings to what they were previously and my phone started to work again. This is beyond frustrating - I'm giving up on the old AT&T sim card and will try a new one as most other people have suggested. The APN settings for old Straight Talk AT&T sim cards if anyone needs it:
APN: att.mvno
MMSC: http: //mmsc.cingular.com (no space after http
MMS proxy: 66.209.11.33
MMS port: 80
APN type: default,supl,mms,hipri
I've tried using these APN settings to no avail and had to revert to the old settings. Lately my signal constantly bounces between 3g and H(not H+). I'm wondering if I should see if this is possible and a solution for me.

Here is the solution for me. I have a Optimus G Pro. Was on ATT gophone SIM for about 6 months. LTE worked fine. Switched to Straight talk SIM and only got HSPA. Called Straight talk because I read somewhere that they had to activate the LTE on your account. Was on the phone with 3 different people for an hour. They asked what kind of phone did I have and my zip code. Then they had me go through my APN settings. All was fine. Then she said that LTE is not available in my area. I said BS. She said please refrain from using the B word. I said huh? The B word. Oh. The word BULL? she said yes. haha. Anyway I had ordered 2 SIMs from the website for $6.99 with free fedex shipping earlier. I needed an airtime card so I went to Walmart and saw the activation kits that includes airtime cards. So I got that. It has an activation code in the package for CDMA phones and came with 4 SIM cards. A nano ATT and a nano T-mobile for iphone. Also came with a full size card for ATT and one for Tmobile. The cards could also be punched out to make them a micro SIM. First of all the SIMs were in the wrong slots in the package. I was a little confused at first but then I figured out what the did. Here is the key: the SIM card that I ordered from the website has a model number of: TF64PSIMC4MB. The one that came in the activation package model number is: TF64PSIMC4BMB. Notice the "B" before the last MB. I called Straight Talk and used their automated system to switch SIM cards on my account and about 10 minutes later the new SIM starting working with LTE. I verified this earlier in the day with a friend of mines SIM card. He had the one without the B. I swapped out SIMs and he no longer got LTE and I did with his SIM. So... Make sure you get the SIM without the B.
On a side note: I was getting anywhere from 12 to 48 Mbps on GoPhone. I just now ran a speedtest and got 12 Mbps on Straight talk. I will run some more tests at different times and different locations and report back if anyone is interested.
check here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2526095 and the straight talk thread in the general forum.

I thought the m8 was already Sim unlocked from the get-go.
Me too but I'm using a h2o sim (att) and I'm getting a non Verizon SIM error plus I can't send or receive pics...so I think I should say SIM unlock lol

Yeah, idk about the unknown Sim message. Are your carrier settings all correct? Other than that much I'm not much help as I'm strictly on Verizon
You need to put H2O's APN settings, just like you need to with ANY phone that you use H2O on. All Verizon LTE phones are SIM unlocked.

All current models may be, but this hasn't always been true. My previous phone, a Droid Razr MAXX, is LTE but would not work with US GSM carriers. It would work fine outside of North America with a locally-provided SIM, however.
Right, should have mentioned "since late 2012" or something like that. Point being though, his M8 is already unlocked.
All of Verizon's LTE enabled smartphones are required to be SIM unlocked by the agreement of the spectrum auction. The frequency bands they use for LTE are part of that spectrum. However, just because it's SIM unlocked, doesn't make it plug and play. You need the APN info for the carrier you are trying to use.
I took my Galaxy S4 to St. Maarten and rented a SIM card. Took me an hour to get it working correctly because the moron working in the store had no clue what the settings were. I had to call a number from their store and sit on hold with a CS rep for the carrier to get the proper APN settings. WHen you have a verizon sim installed, you cannot alter the APN settings. They are locked for VZW....but when you remove it and insert another carrier....well then you can enter them.

No, but I am a dealer. Make sure you are selecting the APN after you put it in too. Actually you should probably call them, you used to be able to just put in a single APN, but the last time I had to put in two different ones, which makes absolutely no sense since you can only be using one of them. If this doesn't work, give them a call...

Make sure you hit menu - save, then select that APN. Do not put any other settings in or change anything else.

Thank you.. I had those ones in already. I have both the apn set of settings in. I think its something on their end. Every time I call they say they'll call back in 24 hrs and blame it on my phone lol but I was having this same issue on my galaxy note 3. So idk just waitin on a fix I guess.

The LTE on my phone switches to 3G after reboot and does not revert to LTE without a lot of tinkering with the settings. I use Consumer Cellular, the APN settings I have confirmed with them, and the phone is provisioned for LTE on their side.
What I am wondering is if anyone is using Consumer Cellular with this phone, and if so is the LTE working as it is supposed to? I have excellent LTE coverage here, other phones in the house on the same plan (iPhones) get LTE as they are supposed to( not reverting to 3G).
I used my Simm card from my old phone (Moto G 2nd Gen) in the new 3rd G Moto. Could this be something with the Simm? I am not sure where to go with this. Consumer Cellular tells me there is nothing they can do for me.
Any ideas or insight would be helpful.
Thanks...
I'm on Consumer Cellular and I have no problem getting LTE. I moved the same sim I had in my 2nd gen to this phone. Get them to send you another Sim. They've next day shipped a replacement Sim to me in the past at no charge. Just tell them the old Sim is bent, broken or something.

Thanks for the reply, so you think it might be the Simm? I will do that, can you please share your APN settings with me? That way I can at least verify that they are giving me the correct settings (the customer service is not that great).

I am looking for the APN SETTINGS page in the Device Networking area. I am on T-Mobile right now and to be honest I don't remember entering all the APN settings like APN, MMS, APN TYPE, etc. I am going to switch providers to get AT&T towers and I am already looking up whether my sim card is compatible and what the new APN SETTINGS are to get ready for the switch but now cannot find where on the phone to put in that long list of information!

When you put in your new AT&T SIM card they will give you, the APN settings should update automatically from the SIM card.

Thanks! My Note 3 has that long list but I guess the X2 702L makes it easier! I just got back from the Cricket store. TMobile, AT&T and Cricket stores are all in the same shopping center 2 miles away from my house. The Cricket people put in a Cricket sim card and the X2 got H+ service! Much better than the E service that I have now! I am going back tomorrow and will be a Cricket customer by this time tomorrow evening! Woooohoooo!

also, since I am in the US, which model # do I buy??
I wonder why the MediaPad X2 isn't on the Huawei US website?
Thanks a lot!

To answer that question is simple. It has a 4glte band that is not supported in USA. The max you will get is hspa+ (H+). The gem-703l does not come with GAPPS integrated into the rom so by default the online the store to apps froms would be the chinese Huawei app store which is in chinese ( not going to fit well in the US). China had licensing issues with google so that is why GAPPS is not there. I believe it is the gem-702l that comes with GAPPS integrated but the 4glte bands are still not there. No 4glte in america is not going to help sales on the USA site. Right now in america all the way down to a tracfone has 4glte. If this phone had 4glte we would have had to pay $1000 for it. Look at the price of the ascend mate7 flag ship when it was released. And look at the price of the ascend mate 2 right now. Not nuch cheaper. But with 4glte its a money maker for huawei.

If you like the phone to be easy to use and where you don't have to do much to set it up and you don't want to worry about rooting or flashing things to get the Google play store working properly then get the 702L If you like to flash roms and completely customize your phone and like having more frequent updates to the newer versions of Android then get the 703L. Honor x2 and Mediapad X2 are the same phone. Usually Honor is another name for the 703L and Mediapad they call the 702L. You won't get LTE with either one but it's still worth the purchase. For me I'd get the 703L here in the US every time. I own both the 702L and 703L. On ebay is where I recommend getting it from. There are several sellers in the US now that sell the phone and you'll get it pretty quickly. I'd spend the extra $30 to buy it here in the US since there are sellers in NY and NJ who sell it now.
Here's a NY seller selling a 702L

Here's another 702L that has a lower price but ships from China. I bought mine here before anyone sold any in in the US.

If you want a 703L you'll most likely have to order it from overseas.

3G on AT&T and HSPA+ on Tmobile, no 4g or LTE. It's still fast though. If the phone says Honor on the back then it's a 703L. If it has the Huawei logo towards the top then it's a 702L or 701L but most likely a 702L.

Hi! Sorry for venting the other day! Lololol! I am wondering what your thoughts are on the 702L vs the 703L for use in the USA... I am going to try the AT&T sim card next week and if it doesn't work I will have to sell my 702L... [emoji24] [emoji24] [emoji24] Now that you have tried both phones do you think that if I buy a 703L (and don't root it) I would still have a texting problem? I have been testing my Note 3 and it seems to be working fine on the Cricket network... I did learn for sure that I cannot send or receive MMS while on WiFi on the Note 3... I have found all the correct Textra Settings (which I couldn't do while on TMobile)... So it isn't my location... Cricket basically told me that I am SOL as far as the X2 702L goes...

That's quite alright. Honestly the 702L was easier to get things going out of the box like MMS, the Play Store and the keyboard is in English instead of Chinese. My buddy wants an X2 as well since the first time he saw mine. Last night he stuck his AT&T SIM card in my 703L to try it out and everything worked perfectly for him. MMS and text messaging worked fine on AT&T. I don't understand why you aren't getting messages. Maybe it's something with your X2? Maybe when and if Huawei decides to put out an update for your 702L it will work. Or if you want to be brave and flash the 703L software on it then it may work. I'm looking to buy the Huawei Mate 8 in a week or so. It's 6" and has all the LTE bands for the US. I'll be selling one of my X2's as well as I really only need one now that I understand the 702L a lot better.

I have my fingers crossed that my mom's AT&T sim card will work next week... I never really considered that it was actually the specific phone I have and that another 702L might work!!! Now I am mad that I sold my other (unopened) 702L already without thinking of trying that one! It's just that what's going wrong and the way it's going wrong is so strange... That it seems to work for the first hour or so after plugging in a new set of APN settings and then it stops working to the point where I don't even get SMS messages (one-to-one) as well as MMS (group messages and pictures)... Lots of misses... I really didn't think it was my specific phone... I am not going to switch to AT&T unless I am POSITIVE it works... And then maybe I will attempt to return this one... I hope i can convince the seller to help me out with that... I can always direct them to this thread as proof!

VR,
There should have been no difference with the other 702 so it was good you sold it. My rooting shouldn't have anything to do with Text working.
I am on ATT and use AwSMS as my SMS/MMS app, Textra was interesting (it usually worked but notifications didn't come up until much later) but better luck with AwSMS https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=project.awsms

And I'm going to race AJ to get a Mate 8 or a LetTV LeMax Pro or a Samsung A9 or a ... once the news comes out of CES next week. Happy New Year.

There should have been no difference with the other 702 so it was good you sold it.
I am on ATT and use AwSMS as my SMS/MMS app, Textra was interesting but better luck with AwSMS https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=project.awsms
You will need to set up your APN
These hanks to thread by Texodos I use the top one. Make sure settings are same in the Messaging app if using a different app than Huawei. I had to tweak a little.
NAME: ATT Phone
APN: phone
MMSC: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMS proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
APN type: default,mms,supl,hipri
If you are using a Straight Talk SIM use this.
NAME: Straight Talk
APN: tfdata
PORT: 80
MMSC: http://mms-tf.net
MMS PROXY: mms3.tracfone.com
MMS PORT: 80
APN Type: default,mms,supl,agps,fota,dun,hipri,entitle
Then go to the home screen menu setting, more networks, mobile networks, network mode and change to LTE/WCDMA/GSM.
If you are using Aio Wireless from AT&T
Name: Aio Wireless
APN: ndo
Proxy: Not Set
Port: Not Set
Username: Not Set
Password: Not Set
Server: Not Set
MMSC: http://mmsc.aiowireless.net
MMS Proxy: proxy.aiowireless.net
MMS Port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 150
Authentication type: Not Set
APN type: default,mms,fota,hipri,supl

Thanks for all the information! That took a lot of time to type up for me! I was using an AT&T simcard. The original AT&T - no subsidiaries... And I used the APN that has the 410 in one of the settings... I actually looked at it so often that I had it memorized... That's the one that AT&T customer service gave me when I called them... The only difference is that I used Textra... I manually set the MMS settings in Textra to coordinate with the APNs... I missed texts quite often... Mostly MMS - Group texts and pictures... But sometimes even an SMS here and there... I don't know how to describe it but it was like the phone went to sleep when I wasn't actively on Textra... It would work successfully for a while after inputting the APN and saving it, inputting the Settings on Textra and restarting the phone. I would then get active to test on Textra by starting a group conversation and asking for pictures, etc... So we would all be active on that group and it would be working. Then we would all stop and maybe a few hours would go by with me not being on the phone and I would get a call that asked why I didn't answer a text... What text? I didn't get it! This mostly happened with group texts and pictures but also occasionally happened with an SMS. I then started sending a text first thing in the morning asking if I had missed anything the night before - seeing if that would "wake up" the phone for the day... I decided that I could get used to doing that... But that didn't work... I am so confused about what the problem is... I am going to try the SMS app you recommended but I will have to try it with my Cricket mobile simcard. I won't have access to the AT&T card for a few weeks... I have been using my Note 3 since 3 days before Christmas... After the 2-day test with the AT&T simcard failed... I am at the end of the line... I have tried everything my limited capabilities can think of... I really just don't get it... I will try that other app tomorrow!!!

Mostly cut and paste and it drove me nuts too. Try AwSMS. Less extra settings and better luck. Part of my success may have been turning off some of the Huawei "optimizations" as suggested by AJ. Those cause great battery life but also seriously impacts multi-tasking. Hopefully he can weigh in here.

I really don't see any difference in battery life after removing all of the extra Huawei power saving features. Just remember to hit the recents button and close all your apps periodically throughout the day and your battery life will still be great. In fact I really dislike all the extra Huawei power saving features and I really don't think they're necessary when you have a 5,000mah battery that lasts a while. Go ahead and give AwSMS a try. You really have nothing to lose.
Took me a bit for me to find the older thread with the help AJ gave me. The power and phone freeze made negligible difference but reduced a bunch of extra Huawei settings that still impacted background processes. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3253532

I think that's the B111 that AJ last mentioned. I asked him what that was in my last post to him but he hasn't answered, yet... My phone is not rooted! I have never done that before and I am not sure I trust my ability to do it successfully! At first I was against doing it because I know that it voids the warranty. But now I am getting the drift that these sellers aren't that cooperative, anyway - so why not root it?

There is a higher level of skill required than your average root job to get to B111. While I have not owned a phone I haven't rooted, the 702-703 switchover and updates have set me back twice and I haven't succeeded yet. The changes to eliminate the huawei components are much more straightforward. If they require root even I don't know.
hello there , where are you all getting this huawei mediapad from. i am looking for a second one as spare parts. do anyone knows anything about sending this item in for service. i have the huawei gem 702l mediapad x2 not the honor one the one with the huawei logo on the back big difference, anyway i have att here in the usa and all i did was insert my sim card, and i did not have to change any settings. the phone is nice and huge, good for watching videos. anyway i been looking for someone to help me get my sd card working, its not reading my sd card, when i got it i stuck my sd card in wrong and now i am afriad that i might have bent the sd card so i cant insert that. i saw somewhere on youtube where you can open up the mediapad and get a replacement sd card socket and just solder it. have anyone have any recent success with this. if so where did you go and who did it for you. let me know. thanks
