Hello, i want to overclock my device and for this i downloaded a custom kernel, but if it fails i would like to have a backup of my stock kernel, i have TWRP recovery.Thanks.

Just make a nandroid backup of your current ROM before you flash the kernel, if you need to go back to stock just restore the nandroid and you'll be back to what you had before you flashed. No need to complicate things with trying to backup just your stock kernel, a normal nandroid backup will do what you're looking for.

Just want to make sure if the nandroid backup & restore is really working on Sensation with latest CWM since I have made a bunch of backups and I am heavily messing around with the phone for the past 48 hours lol... Just to be sure this backups are going to actually work in case I screw the phone...

Do remember that clockwork /nandroid restore will not restore the kernel. If you flashed a rom that's using a custom kernel, you will need to flash the stock kernel before trying to restore your backup or you will get stuck in a boot-loop.

isnt the boot.img the kernel and init stuff? i was under the assumption it was backed up when you do a nandroid on most devices (like HTC). the RFS file system samsung uses on their devices prevented us from backing up and restoring a boot.img file so we have to always have a kernel in case of the good ol boot loop
so to go back to stock kernel, i install it to the sd card then flash it in recovery right?

Yeap... That's how you flash a kernel, but not needed if what you want to do is restore from a nandroid backup... To restore just select the nandroid backup you want to restore. No need to flash any kernel prior restoring from nandroid.

since when do you have to reflash a stock kernel in order to flash your backup? I have tried every rom out here for the sensation didn't like any of them and reflashed my backup of stock with no issues....

This is not true. Nandroid contains the kernel image.
You would only have to flash a different kernel AFTER you restore, if you don't want to use the one that you backed up.
To the point, nandroid restore works perfect with 4.0.1.5 CWM. I confirm.

Done a nandroid backup from within 4EXT recovery of my phone, which is stock 2.3.4, as I'm tempted to give one of the ICS custom roms a go.
These require flashing the ICS firmware before installing the custom ROM.
If I go back via the nandroid restore from recovery, does this restore the firmware or would that need re-flashing first?

No it will not restore firmware, but if you keep a library of firmware on your SD card you can install as you need from recovery. Rename the PG58IMG files with a reference to the firmware so you don't get muddled up, then rename to PG158IMG as you need.
I remember seeing over in the Dev. forums that CWM recovery isn't restoring the kernel properly when people try to restore their backup of the stock ROM
Does this happen with TWRP as well? Or is the issue with the stock ROM / Kernel?
I'm hesitant to try CM9 and would like a clean way to recover to the stock ROM without having to use the downgrade method and reinstall everything.

From what I read in the CM9 thread someone had the same issue when using TWRP.
Nandroids don't include the kernel i believe it must be restored seperately
It should, wouldn't that be in boot.img? I know on my Droid Inc I have gone between sense and aosp backups, both using different kernels.

Im a little ashamed but I have never restored from a backup before in recovery. Do you have to wipe and all that prior to restoring or just hit restore?

I believe the restore wipes automatically...I could be wrong though. I haven't had to restore a rom in months.
It does. Restore formats the partitions then restores to them.
restoring stock rom without backup
Speaking of restoring through recovery, Is it possible to restore my phone to stock rom without the back up? If not, then RUU to stock 1.85 is the only way right? I installed a new rom yesterday, and I decided to wipe everything including SD so I basically erased my stock rom backup.

The best thing for you to do now is restore via the RUU to stock.
Once you have that done you can go ahead and flash other ROM's

Do i need to flash a stock boot.img when restoring a backup from TWRP?
My experience points to yes because I tried and it never got to boot animation after nandroid restore. Not 100% sure though.

Well if you think about it technically... If your backup is a custom rom and you restore it you have to flash its kernel, so since the backup is like a custom rom only backupped so you will have to flash its kernel too
