Hello!
I have already poured my heart (an obsessive number of hours) into getting as far I as I have with this and could really use some expert advice. I have repaired a water damaged Droid Turbo 2 (factory unlocked, locked bootloader) stuck in bootloop and eventualy got the device to a point where everything I tested (screen, digitizer, sensors, wifi and bluetooth radios, speakers, microphone, cameras, flashes, battery and charging circuits, ...) worked. I was super excited, until I tried to activate the device with my carrier today, multiple times, (Metro PCS) and failed. I'm not an expert on this stuff, especially how cell networks work, and I need guidance on what to do next.
When I attempted to activate the device at the Metro PCS store they set the phone up from the carrier's end with the IMEI and sim card number, and after the phone was rebooted multiple times no connection was ever made. No service is shown on the 'bars' and Cellular network settings > Mobile Network Type displays 'No service'.
The brand new sim card appears to be functioning. When calls are attempted, a prompt appears that states the phone will not make calls on airplane mode, even though airplane mode is definitely not active. The prompt allows you to select 'Yes' to turn airplane mode off, after which the phone states that it is turning on the radio. This process apparently times out, and I am sent back to a blank dialer. The people at the store or Metro PCS Dealer Support Group haven't been able to tell me why it won't work, except a lady on the line eventually said that she thinks the phone only supports CDMA, but I am sure this isn't true. At the store we did try manipulation of APN settings with no luck as well.
Main things I did to get the phone this far (ie. before ever attempting to activate it with a carrier) - flashed OEM firmware 6.0.1 I found online (didn't fix), torn phone down and cleaned corrosion with 91% isopropyl alcohol (the step that got the phone out of bootloop), tore NFC/wireless charging coils part flex cable in the process which caused the charging circuits to malfunction, replaced that part, and tested every feature I possibly could.
The only two things I can think of as to why I can't get the device onto my network: the cellular radio happens to be the only thing still broken on the phone OR it's just not going to work with Metro PCS for some reason.
I know there are people on these forums that know a lot about this stuff, and I could really use your help. Any advice will be appreciated.

Hi !
Most probably a hardware issue , let`s keep the discussion in one place

So, I have extremely crappy 3G coverage at my home sometimes, and it completely prohibits me from speaking to people. I have called AT&T tech support and basically they said they know the transmitter in my area has a problem, and I can go pound sand. A microcell "might" work, but I have heard they have problems on DSL lines, and I really don't feel it is fair that I should have to pay extra for what my service provider should be supplying anyways. But enough with my anger at my provider.....
I just purchased this LG Phoenix and the way I used to get around my 3G problem previously was that I would force 2g/EDGE on my old BlackBerry Bold 9000. Not only that, but it used to save LOTS of battery power. On this phone though, it wouldn't appear you can't disable 3G. I have checked in the settings, and I have tried a couple of different Apps in the android market to no avail.
Have I missed something, or am I just going to have to wait months till developers start rolling out custom ROMs or the like? I really like this phone other than the fact that I can barely make calls on it at my house. Which negates the purpose of owning a phone I suppose.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Well, I see nobody has any answers. That's OK, because I found out what I needed.
Basically AT&T disabled the option to choose your data network within the operating system. (Along with side-loading, which I will admit they fixed with the 2.2.2 update)
What I need to access is in one of the two following menu options on this device:

Unfortunately, I have been told that I can deal with it and pound sand, or wait until a custom ROM is adapted to this device.
Sooooo.....
In case anybody actually gives a crap, I have found an answer to my dilemma.
You can force 2g/3g transmitter usage though the hidden menu on your phones.
First, dial: 3845#*505# (Phoenix) 3845#*506# (Thrive)
Scroll down to the "Network Mode" selection and enter.
Automatic is the first selection in that menu. This is what are phones are set to by default. This allows the phone to switch between whatever it thinks is the best wireless network to use. Unfortunately, I can barely talk to people when I have 1 bar of signal in my house, and very often the phone won't switch over to 2g when 3g signal is very weak. 2g also saves A LOT on battery power.
If you want to choose the wireless mode your phone, scroll down to the bottom of that menu and you will find the following options:
- If you choose WCDMA Only, you will connect to the 3G network
- If you choose GSM Only, you will connect to the 2G/EDGE network
I hope this is helpful to somebody other than just me.
Is there an easier way of doing this rather than inputting that code each and every time?
Bueller? Bueller?
I purchased a Global GSM 16 GB Moto G from Amazon back in January, and have been using it purely as a WiFi device these past months. I bought it to use as a travelling phone, as I already have a phone but needed something unlocked to use when on trips. I am in Mexico for a month and have been having trouble getting a local SIM card (from a company called Movistar) to work with the phone. They only had full sized SIM cards nearby, and I didn't want to travel an hour to pick up a Micro SIM, but I had brought along a SIM card cutter just in case, and quickly trimmed it down.
I popped it in and the phone quickly recognized it and picked up signal. I tested sending and receiving messages, calling and receiving calls, all with no problems. However, the next morning I saw that the phone had disconnected and was no longer recognizing the SIM card. I did the usual restart, which worked for an hour, then I had to resort to taking the card out, cleaning the contacts, and putting it back in. It worked for another couple hours, then quit again. Whatever I try it tells me my SIM card is invalid or doesn't recognize it anywhere from a couple seconds to a couple hours after I insert it. I have tested the card in an old unlocked RAZR V3 with one of the Micro to normal SIM adapters included with the SIM cutter and it works just fine, with no connection problems even after a couple days of use.
This leads me to believe that the problem lies within the software of the Moto G itself. After a bit of research it seems like this might be a problem with Kit-Kat. I've checked the SIM contacts inside the phone with a flashlight for damage (though I'm very careful with my tech) and they all appear to be just fine. I've attached a screenshot of my lock screen with evidence of the "Invalid SIM" message highlighted in orange.
I would appreciate any help figuring this out!

same things happen to me also.
when I cut down a normal sim to micro . some days itss working then same invalid sim problem.
only solution to re insert sim.
At this point my phone will reject my SIM card every couple minutes to every couple hours. Sometimes it will not even recognize it immediately after a SIM re-insertion cycle. Right now it's pretty much unusable as a cellphone.
Woke up this morning, no service, keeps saying current network (T-Mobile) is unavailable, the only way it'll work is if I pull sim card out, power it down, reinsert it and start it back up, it'll work fine for about half an hour and drops network again.
I'm running latest mahdi ROM, nothing else modified.
Any help appreciated.
BTW sim card is relatively new( about 5 months old)
Try a different ROM and if it still does it RMA the device I was having problems with service to where when I was using data it would decide to switch to h/3g I'm on T-Mobile as well

Thanks for the suggestion, i don't think its the ROM, but to put my mind and ease and eliminate that possibility I'll flash another ROM tonight.
Btw how does the RMA work? I've never had to go through this before
Thanks
If you purchased it through T-Mobile just call T-Mobile and tell them you're having problems with it and just do troubleshooting stuff and if what they say doesent work unroot it and send it back and if you purchased it through google same exact thing
Although I bought it brand new, it wasn't from Google or T-Mobile itself. If I can't rectify this with software I'll have to contact lg and see what they say
No bueno, flashed other ROM and currently on stock ROM still having same problem, service drops off rendering phone useless. Emergency calls only is all i get.
Any advice?
Try going to the service menu which you can get into by dialing *#*#4636#*#* in dialer. Go into phone information and try changing this setting:

Since you're on t mobile I'd recommend trying anything but CDMA. WCDMA is fine though. Maybe one of the options will help solve your connectivity issues.
Personally I'm on WCDMA only when connected to WiFi. This gives me 3G. Otherwise I am on LTE only. GSM should give you 2g.

Have you tried different modem?
Figured it out, in short I got scammed. Called tmobile today, they blacklisted the phone for non payment, I guess the guy that sold it to me hadn't paid it off/paid. I guess lesson learned, call service provider and make sure device is paid off.
It still works with att. At this point I'll sell it as such and or for parts.
Thanks everyone
Today i went on business trip and while on plane i put airplane mode on. Upon landing i couldn't connect to network anymore, it gives me 2 errors depending if i manually select network or try automatically, those 2 are Unable to connect. Try later and Error while searching for network.
I reset network settings, restarted phone, reset it, tried different sim in my phone and it didnt work either, mine did in other phone. I dont known what to do besides wait to go home and give it to service since its under wattany... any ideas please?

You didn't say but have you tried a reboot?
At least20 times, wiped cache too
Came home and network works... I'm still taking it to service but don't know how they'll or I can test it. Other sim produced same error abroad so it's not that...
Edit:
Bit of an update:
I called my warranty place they said phone is from Italy which now made sense but that it should work. I ran imei check and it says blacklisted. I bought it new unsealed with warranty from official place so now I'm gonna need a new phone, right?
It is the bug of Samsung. I am having the same problem all the time on both S8+ and S7Edge. Iphone 6 is fine. Typical answer form Samsung is 'network or sim' related. O2 is saying problem with your phone. When I choose network manually everything is working. As a fix you can turn 4g off when roaming
Here is what happened:
I got a week old phone with a broken screen.
Decided to try to fix it so I ordered a spare screen from eBay. After 2 Weeks display finally arrived so I changed it my self by following a YouTube tutorial.
Everything worked flawlessly except new display had 4 dead spots on a touch screen so I complained and got a new one.
I changed it again and this time screen was OK but I can't get GSM signal, so I dissassembled it and assembled once again but still no change.
Tried different sim card-nothing happened.
Tried to register network manually but it doesn't work.
Plane mode ON and OFF is not helping neither.
Phone recognise a card, asks for PIN, PIN OK but still no signal.
Anyone has an idea is there a way to improve or boost GSM signal? Or to fix "receiver"?

Update about phone:
I wondered how my friend managed to crack a screen just buy stepping on it, and now I know.
I had to screw a shelf today, and while holding a screwdriver in one hand, and shelf in other, the only option to get some light was to put a phone with flashlight on between my teeth. Same second I've "bite" my phone, I heard "crack" sound, and the corner of my screen was broken. Now I know there is no gorilla glass here, and can easier understand the price difference of Alcatel and my Galaxy S6.
