Will the Verizon Pixel ever be able to root after updating to 7.1.1? - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

I bought a used one for cheaper but unfortunately it was a model sold by Best Buy. It was already updated to 7.1.1 too so I can't unlock the bootloader... I heard the chance was small, but I want to have a little hope I will be able to root my phone in the future

None of us know for sure, but I don't think it will. I don't think anyone is even working on it. The last one was pretty much an accidental discovery

I wonder if a new/unopened Verizon variant would have the 7.1.1 update out of the box....

I got a replacement for a broken one two days ago and it had 7.1.1.
But that's a bit different from a brand new one unopened in box....

I received my new Verizon PixelXL on 1/31 and had 7.1 out of the box. Received 7.1.1 within a few hours of booting on, but had to reboot to receive the update.

I got mine yesterday from a Verizon store and it only had 7.1 I was able to unlock it. Could have been old stock I suppose but the way the guy talked they sell them faster than they can get them and at first told me he didn't think they had any in stock.

Received my replacement device from EE in the UK with 7.1 also. Very lucky indeed.

I'm soon to receive my 128gb Pixel XL from Verizon. On the off-chance that it has not been updated to 7.1.1 , is there a way to go through the initial phone setup while being sure not to take the OTA update?

You really should be fine on the version.
It needs to be in bootloader....So perhaps you can just hold power and volume down first time. Then ADB push and run depixel8.
If not, do not put a sim in it, and skip wifi setup.

Don't have WiFi on. That's the key. Large download like that won't automatically download over network connection.

I've done it on mine. Take the sim out before powering on. During setup do NOT connect to WiFi. Once you're through setup enable developer options and turn off auto updates. Then you can dePixel8!

Mine updated even though I selected not to so if you get one that has 7.1 do it quickly before you get hosed.

Any luck on 7.1.1 verizon

AT&T Note edge root & rom options?

I have an at&t note edge. Running stock kitkat 4.4.4. I see the at&t note 4 has been getting the lollipop update. But nothing for the note edge. I read that the note edge might not get the update. Ive been waiting for a long time now. If I want to put lollipop on my phone myself what should or could I do? Can I root the phone then maybe flash a rom on to it?
Due to the Bootloader been locked by AT&T I don't see a root coming any time soon for our Note Edge.
I'm still loving the edge as is, but if it was rootable, I'd love it even more.

Just out of curiosity, where did you read that? I find it hard to believe that even AT&T being themselves wouldn't push an almost completed update to such an expensive flagship....

I read it over on some of at&ts online forums. I have also been checking every day to see if there is an update on my phone. Its a little weird the note 4 is getting updates but nothing for the edge.

The reason I find it unlikely, from a development standpoint, is because they are virtually the exact same hardware the only major difference being the edge screen, obviously, which would just require a bit of tweaking of the edge screen apps which is already done by Samsung...
Let's also remember the edge came out a month later give at&t time and they will push out lollipop for the edge.
Guess what? I just checked again today for an update. Says it's ready to download! I'll have to go find a WiFi hot spot.

Woohooo! Awesome! Mine is downloading now.
Mine is downloading very slow download though.
I was gonna make a new thread but I might as well just reply here. I just bought a new unlocked Note Edge but I'm still stuck on 4.4.4. It keeps saying that my phone is up to date even though that's clearly not true. Shouldn't an unlocked phone get it before all the carrier versions? Not to mention, I am in Australia which from what I read should've been the first place to get the update. Any thoughts?
Being in Australia I'd say you should have. I unlocked my phone a few days ago on kitkat 4.4.4. Then today updated to the new lollipop. The update came out yesterday here from at&t. I'm on AT&T in the usa. I have been testing t mobile with it. But so far not impressed with the service area range of t mobile. Maybe it's your service provider?

Yeah could be but as I mentioned, I bought an unlocked Note Edge and I'm just using a pre-paid SIM card right now so I'm not tied to any carriers. I was always under the impression that unlocked phones don't need to wait for carriers to release updates?
I have never heard of an unlocked phone getting updated before a locked phone on the same network. From what little I know, it being unlocked just allows you to use your phone on other carriers/networks.

So you mean if I put a SIM card in now from a carrier that has already pushed the update out then I should be able to update it? I guess I always thought that unlocked phones would get the update through the phone manufacturer (so in this case, Samsung) instead of waiting for the carrier's approval.

Thanks a lot for the info! Well I just went there and downloaded Kies3 (I'm totally new to Samsung) but it doesn't seem to think that my phone needs to be updated (there's no notifications under Firmware information). My current firmware version is N915GXXU1ANK4. The closest model number I could find was the GALAXY Note Edge (SM-N915G) and the newest firmware for my country/carrier (Australia, no carrier) is the 5.0.1 released on 17.02.2015. Could you please take a look and see if that is in indeed the one I need to download without fear of bricking my phone? Thanks a lot!

Oops, yeah I guess I should've just checked that instead of trying to figure it out from my current firmware :silly: My model number is SM-N915G so I guess I'm on the right track. Is there a way to determine for sure which country my phone belongs to? I bought it at a standard brick and mortar shop here so I'm 99% certain it's an Australian phone, but just in case?

It should be Australian most firmware on Sam mobile tell you what country the firmware is from. Some have multi csc so it can be used in another country, if it has multi csc just get glue service providers apn and enter it for internet to work properly.

Pre-Ordered from EE (Will it be stock or with the carrier (EE) add aps and tweaks)

I'm hoping its a stock phone so when google do an update and release it, I don't have to wait a few months for EE to release theirs.

Best thing to do is ask EE through twitter (@EE). They're actually very helpful. Post your findings back here. )
I never thought about asking them, I'll do it now and let you know.
It's stock android.
However, the bootloader WILL be locked. Only unlockable if you're PAYG or after your contract is up. Dunno how this will affect OTA updates.
I don't really believe that it will be a stock OS because they'll most certainly want their WiFi calling app on it.

I'm with EE and bought my Nexus 6P from Google directly and WiFi calling works just fine. I'm hoping it's stock but knowing EE, it'll have some form of rubbish on it that prevents proper Android OTAs.

Hey that's promising then - it could mean the Pixel will have it too!
Got mine pre ordered from ee too. Will the bootloader definately be unlockable? If so, how quick are ee with pushing android updates? What's their track record been on the nexus 6p?
Can't comment on EE update speeds but I bought mine from Carphone Warehouse, just to be on the safe side. Expected delivery on 20th (release date) too.
Looks like those on EE will get OTA along with everyone else! (Evend though bootloader maybe locked). They're not installing any customisation's ..
https://community.ee.co.uk/t5/Android/Pre-order-Pixel-the-Phone-by-Google/td-p/491795
I ordered my N6 through EE. Fully stock, no bootloader restrictions and no bloatware, they didn't even pre-load the EE app. Hopefully it will be the same for Pixel.

Can the Pixel be rooted?

I'm very confused. Some people say I can root it just like a nexus, some say that Google would just brick my phone, and I also heard I would need a custom ROM first. I'm super confused. Can anyone help me out please? Rooting is very important to me. Also it's the pixel XL if for some reason it could make a slight difference in what I would install/use.
OK. All pixels or pixels XL can be bootloader unlocked and rooted except for Verizon and EE variants running the 7.1.1.
Read in the dev section. It's much like a nexus, only thing is the two partitions need to be accounted for.
I'm running Dec 7.1.1 stock rooted with twrp. No issues at all.
Have you looked in the development forum at all?
If you have a pixel from Google you can unlock the bootloader and root it.
If you have a Verizon pixel you can only root if the bootloader is unlocked. The only way you can u look k the bootloader is if you are on 7.1. if you have updated to 7.1.1 you cannot unlock the bootloader therefore you can't root.

To my knowledge there is no one working on an unlock for the VZW devices on 7.1.1. The "method" previously used was stumbled across. Even though I am unsure of how Verizon blocks enabling bootloader unlocking I very highly doubt that a new method will be found. Every device in Verizon's history that could either be exploited or had an unlocked method exposed had a patch issued to block it. Once patched there has never been a second exploit found.

I completely agree. The first S4 was released with the MDK bootloader. Loki was the exploit. That device lived to see both an AOSP 7.1 and OptimizedCM 14.1. The first OTA they pushed blocked it and many were quite upset. A new method was never discovered. Not sure if Big Red still uses the same "excuse" as back then but they claimed they were protecting network security. Blow that smoke up someone else's ***. I'm not so easily suckered.

Not sure what you are talking about. I have a Verizon pixel with unlocked bootloader and I am rooted. I was just stating that on general I hate Verizon because they require bootloaders to be locked. We got lucky with the pixel because there was an exploit found to unlock it..Which is how I was able to unlock mine.
Now that the recent update patched the exploit it sucks for other people getting Verizon pixels cause once they ship with the update they will not be able to unlock bootloader

That's not the only things that sucks for those still waiting and wanting to unlock. I am hearing of clerks in the store activating them before giving it to the customer. They are buying an unlocked device and being given a locked device.

Well that's normal procedure for any carrier. You get a phone they open it and try to activate and test. You just have to say "WAIT" and explain that you have to change a setting before activating. Then take sim out and skip everything and turn off auto updates in developer options. Use your best judgement based on the rep you are dealing with. With best buy before even going there to exchange my pixel.. I thankfully got someone who did the same tinkering I did with phone so I was honest with him and I got him to exchange my phone straight out.. without having to do the whole return thing with verizom and mess up my plan. I also examined why I had to take the SIM out and not active and he was cool with it. I walked in and have him my box and he gave me another and that was it haha.
But dealing with verizon you could simple say you heard the update causes issues so you wanna test without it first.. if they say no then argue. They may be required to activate but they definitely don't have any kind of policy that says you can't skip activation during setup and do it right after.

It depends on whether or not you're dealing with a knowledgeable Verizon Corporate Store associate (I don't deal with authorized resellers.) He does not have to open the box to activate the phone. He's required to record the IMEI and the SIM IDs, but those values are printed on the box for the last 2 years. The majority of the time, I walk out with still-shrinkwrapped phones. (Obviously, that doesn't guarantee that that particular phone still has an unlockable firmware.)

True, but that is what they are doing. I've been on VZW for years. When I got mine they opened the package and went to insert the SIM and I told them to stop. They said "We have to make sure it activates before you leave the store". I said "No you don't, If you place a SIM in and activate it the deal and sale is off". Long story short I left with a device that did not get powered on. And this was at the VZW store, not a reseller.
I was told at the Verizon store when I got mine, as long as you go to the big corporate store they don't have to set it up, but If you go to the little retail ones they do. I put my sim card in. Had absolutely no problem. I just didn't click on the 7.1.1 update. it didn't automatically update while I set it up. I got home and unlocked. What worries me the most is me going and breaking this thing and getting another one past 7.11, I really wish I would have gone through Google.

Every Verizon phone I have owned loaded with a verizon splash screen.
Now as for the greyed out part, see if you are on the latest update. Some were having troubles with this if they weren't on the latest update. After updating, it turned this feature on

Verizon pixels don't have a Verizon splash screen. They have to normal Google boot screen. I would figure it out and contact asurion if they gave you a Verizon pixel. They should be replacing the exact phone you had. If it is in fact a Verizon pixel you are screwed and can't unlock since it updated to 7.1.1
How do you even have insurance through verizon/asurion? I haven't had it in years but I thought you could only get that if you got the phone through verizon... Didn't think you could bring your own phone and add insurance?

Nope, that is incorrect as is evident in this example. Ive bought my phones off Ebay ever since Verizon did away with unlimited data plans. Ive had a few replacements since with no probs. The only requirement is your phone, regardless of where it was purchased, needs to show as being activated on your account. Asurion insures a ton of other carriers, not just VZW.
Delete, checking it out.
??
I'm assuming you're on Verizon, if so check your device's name on their website. It should say "NON VZW PIXEL" to indicate a Google store phone.

So other than the locked bootloader...is there any other difference between the Goog and Red versions. I got Verizon Pixel from Best Buy on $240 deal and have used exclusively on Tmobile. There is zero Verizon bloatware I can find.

No.
I'm sure you mean "factory unlockable bootloader" since even bought directly from Google the bootloader isn't unlocked until you check the option in Developer Settings and then use the fastboot command to unlock the bootloader, but yes, that's the only difference.
UPDATE:
So i just called up Asurian and told them I was having random reboot issues and they sent me a new VZW Pixel that was back on 7.1. I then went thru setup w/o SIM and no wifi and immediately depixel8'd it. All good now.

Is anyone working on a way to unlock the Verizon Google Pixel's bootloader still?

I have had my Verizon varient Google Pixel for a year now. I am on Android beta 8.1. Are any developers still experimenting and trying to find a way? Or has anyone already found a way? I have wanted to unlock this thing since day one. Please tell me someone out there is trying to find a way.
No one has tried that we are aware of since last fall.
No one's going to work on this, when you can just buy one from google that can be unlocked.
Well I'm getting a replacement this Wednesday due to a manufacturing defect. Does anyone know if it will come with Android 7.1?

It's going to be updated for sure. Doubt they have any old stock left

Actually it has been reported on another thread that if it's a brand new Verizon Pixel, NEVER USED BEFORE, that you can put a different carrier sim in the phone and oem unlock will be available in developer settings to unlock bootloader. However if a Verizon sim is put in it prior to unlocking, it will never be able to be unlocked from what I read at following link. https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel/help/bootloader-unlock-verizon-pixels-t3616101

Actually if you read through the thread carefully, the working theory is that VZW was out of stock and shipped out Google phones. If you have a Verizon phone on 7.1 you have options....if it's been updated you're out of luck.
Just so you guys know... It did end up coming with Android 7.1.2. No unlocking for me.
Actually, I realise they sent me a Google store varient and I am now rooted.
Yeah. I dumped mine once my replacement came with 7.1.1
Happy with the Essential for now.
