Default App always switches back - Huawei Mate 9 Questions & Answers

Hey guys,
My default launcher and my default sms app keep switching back to default on its own. Sometimes when I reboot or when I pair a new Bluetooth device.
Not sure why, and I keep switching it back. Anyone else experiencing this? Is there a way to fix it?
I've switched me default sms app probably a few hundred times since getting my new phone and seems like every time I get a text message I'm like WTF where is it? Lol

Yes this has been discussed before. There's a bug that seems to reset the defaults when you use Bluetooth.
I'm using the stock launcher so can't really comment in detail.

Can you link the other thread discussing this issue?

Sorry I do not recall, you'll have to try the search function.

With the Mate 9, I have the same issue of my default sms app being switched back to factory sms. I also see it having correlation to using ultra battery mode, meaning that I discover the switch only after returning from ultra battery. I called Huawei, great staff btw, but they were unable to resolve the issue. Told me to use phone manager more to clear cache and optimize the device. Neither of those actions have resolved the switch. I'll stop using ultra battery and see if anything else triggers it.

I found that reboot and adding or removing a paired Bluetooth device will trigger it as well.

Hi.
You can try:
Settings -> write on the top search bar: "default" -> Default apps -> Settings for default apps (or some thing like this, I'm spanish) -> Launcher
and change value there.

This won't help...this is a bug in Chinese version ROM....I've both Chinese Mate 9 and International Mate 9....the international one don't have this issue....
The launcher will reset to default one, if mate 9 successfully connected to a bluetooth device when you are not in launcher screen.....
Nobody seems care about this bug...but this bugs is very annoying....If there is any huawei engineer looking in this forum I've made a video for you to check it out.....

Actually I've try every method to contact the so-call customer support in huawei, but just no reply....I try to use the hicare apps to contact them since i am chinese i can write it in chinese and they told me there is some problem in their system and ask me to contact a phone number which is a free phone call in china....I am not in china, so i cannot dial that number....Then I try to go to huawei's website and ask the online customer service there....I even made a video for them.....and told them there is many issue in xda....however....they reply me....1. they cannot connect to the internet(indeed they receive my video, since i can send attachment in the online customer service session)......2. they will pass to somebody who will reply me in 48 hours... and 48hours passed....nobody contact me....I leave my phone number and email address to them...I even told them if there is problem in using long distance call, just send me email with a phone number i can call them back.....but no reply at all.....Besides complain in the website there is nothing i can do really....

I am in Hong Kong. Of course i cannot contact local support, it's a chinese firmware mate 9, the hong kong dealer will not take care this.....(Hong Kong use international firmware).....

I have likewise noticed the launcher switch back to the default one occasionally, and searching google led me here. I bought a Huawei Mate 10 Pro in Bangkok, Thailand last month. I love the phone, but this suddenly switching back to the default without notice was concerning, esp. after reading the news that all U.S. Intelligence agencies issued a warning to all Americans to not use Huawei products due to their possibly being monitored/tracked by the Chinese government and military. Glad to hear the international version rom doesn't have this glitch. It makes me feel it's a genuine glitch in the rom rather than something malicious? sigh... Fantastic phone though, best Android phone I've owned to date. It's a shame they killed the deal with AT&T to bring it enmasse here. Way better than iPhone X or Galaxy S9 in my opinion.

This case happened on my phone (Huawei Honor V8 with emui 8.0) . After system reboot, the third-part SMS app which I set to default Messaging app will lose messaging permission sometimes. I have to check carefully every time I rebooted my phone as I can't sovled it.

[SOLVED] Smart dialing not searching contact names

Well, as the name of the thread explains quite well, my dialer is not searching in the contact names. It only searches the numbers.
The phone is pretty new. Bought it last week while travelling internationally. Didn't use the phone features till today when I got back. I have downloaded and installed a lot of games so I don't want to factory reset it.
Any ideas?
PS: Tried searching through XDA and Google for a solution. Didn't find anything that could help me. Don't bash me if I missed something.
SOLUTION:
Delete google account and re-add it.
Couple things I can think of.
1) Have you got your contact sync on?
2) dialed enough numbers? Think you need to dial 2-3 before it shows last I tried.
3) what FW you using etc?

1. Sync is on.
2. Made enough calls but I don't see how that should affect searching.
3. PDA: N9005ZHUBMI7

CSC: N9005ZZHBMI7

I really did try that before asking for help, man.
Update:
I had installed whatsapp (finally) and noticed that smart dialling started working after that.
But it only searches in the names of contacts who are linked to whatsapp. The ones who are linked only to my google account are still not searched.
This is the weirdest bug I have ever encountered in any phone/ROM.

Hmm that is bizarre. open dialer > hit the soft key > settings and choose contacts to display? maybe it's not set to default (All) - or like I said previously, could be the firmware (cannot find the thread that mentions about it now )

Any chance to get searching on Hong Kong firmware?
Smartdial (pinyin only) doesn't work on latest stock firmware (6.0.1) for Samsung Note 4 Duos, too.
Latin etc alphabetic languages OK.
Strange, because in stock contacts app, hieroglyphic names are grouped to the correct pinyin's first letter!
So the hieroglyphs are rendered to pinyin by system internally, but it's not used in the dialer.
Hi everyone !
I just would like to expose my solution about this problem. I have a Honor 9 with official firmware and this function worked like a charm for few weeks, but stop a day !
So to get back this function, I had to go to the contacts application, next click on "more", next "organize contacts" and finally "repair index data".
And it works !
So now if I want to make a phone call to "Sophie" for example, I can just type : "76" or "767".
My phone is in french. Application contacts, puis "plus", puis "organiser les contacts", puis enfin "Réparer l'index des données"
Hi udine1981!
I have the exact same problem with my Honor 8, but after I do reindexing, it only works for a few hours and after that I cannot find the contacts again...
Was reindexing once a permanent solution on your case?

Text message "invalid recipient" fix

I have been seeing a lot of people on various forums complain about when they try and send a text they get an invalid recipient message. You must be rooted to fix this. In Root Explorer go into the CUST folder. Inside will be a cmcc, dualcu, and hw folder. (Lost+Found & Preinstalled you don't have to worry about) Go into cmcc--->cn--->xml and delete the mms_config.xml file. Do the same for the dualcu and hw folders. Then restart your phone. You will not get the invalid recipient message any more.

Yes, it's not too big of a deal though as you can use another SMS app.
So I could get any SMS App from the Google Play Store? Another question... where's the best place to buy an X2 for use in the USA? I have read that if it says Honor on it then it's a Chinese version but that there is another version of the X2 for international and that is a "better" one for the USA. I don't know how to quote your previous post (I am kindof a Forum newbie). I got an email telling me that I had been quoted so I knew to come here. I wish I could figure out how to quote so you would get an email that I am back! Lol!

I don't think it matters which model you buy. You will not have LTE here in the U. S. The Chinese version has been out longer so it will probably have more development here on XDA. You can buy it on Gizok.com, on ebay or Amazon.

It has to do with the way the phone numbers are formatted here in the US. Huawei has something in the MMS_config file so that any other number format other than an international one won't send texts unless they send you a text first. Removing those files removes the format and lets you text any number without an issue.

Then just using another SMS app is not really a "fix"? The only way to really fix it is to do that complicated thing that was brought up earlier in this thread? When I was told to just use another SMS app I went on the Play Store to look for one. There are a LOT of them! Do you have any recommendations? Will using that app also allow me to get pictures via texts? I get a lot of them!

The problem doesn't happen with a third party sms app. It only happens with the default one. Textra is one of the best. It's fast and acts like the stock Google SMS. Yeah picture messages work fine with Textra.

Text "invalid recipient" work around
You wont need to be Rooted to use stock messaging app and yes invalid recipient is an issue to some. Its only a formatting issue just as if you had a device from your local area and used it in a foreign country you would need to correct dialing codes. The easiest fix is to save all contacts in International format exactly as shown +1(area code) ###-#### or just download a app called Twitch contact formatter from the P.S. Run the app it will find all numbers then select output to international format and done.
1. I recommend you access and export a backup of your original contacts from PC.
2. Then run downloaded app and sync contacts to your g account once again.
If contacts do not update in cloud delete address book in cloud and re-sync from phone.*****BACK UP FIRST*****

Thanks for this information! I am on TMobile right now and Textra is a mess on TMobile. Apparently, TMobile doesn't support third-party messaging apps... Hi, aj, I even choose that TMobile "fix" in the Textra Settings and I had A LOT of instances of my texts not getting sent. Then a few would get sent at once hours later... I think you have answered my question which I called TMobile about and they couldn't answer... Even though I am in a TMobile "black hole" - always on E (Edge) with no phone network available for Internet and phone calls are even in-and-out... My texting on the TMobile messaging app and on home WiFi works just fine... I questioned TMobile and they said it was probably the interaction between Textra and TMobile... Now I am sure that it has to do with the terrible TMobile service here, instead... I am giving TMobile until December 1 to fix this situation. The local TMobile store (less than 2 miles from my house and right in the middle of this dead zone) told me that they're in the process of putting the nTelos towers they bought online with the existing towers and they said service would be a whole lot better. Otherwise, I am off to AT&T, I guess...

You should be able to walk into a TMobile store and ask them to give you a signal booster. Do you get good coverage outside your house or is the coverage bad in your entire neighborhood? If the whole area is bad then the booster will do you no good though. Downstairs in my house the signal is not so great so they gave me a signal booster. I put one of them upstairs near a window and the second one downstairs and I get a great signal downstairs now.

I tested it and the signal is 4G LTE at about 2 miles away on one road entrance to downtown. All of downtown is E - including the TMobile office! Then it is hard to say... Rural areas that I rarely go into are on other sides so I haven't gone many miles into them to test it out... The northern part of our city is about 20 miles away. I go there and service is great. There are rural areas between us and the northern, developed part. I would say west of us (pretty rural) is bad almost starting at the sign which says "Welcome to Suffolk" about 30 miles away... In land area we are a big city. Old timey divided into little old towns. I am in the old downtown. I looked at the TMobile website and read about the signal booster and was excited until I read further and realized that it would not help... I had excellent service on Verizon... But CDMA was no longer an option when I decided to try the X2! I had no idea TMobile was so bad in my area. Especially since they opened a store less than 2 miles away! Lol!

I have downloaded Twitch and read everything that I can about it on Google. I am not sure how to do backups. I go to Contacts and in the Menu there's an option to Export to sdcard. Is that what you mean? I have never backed up to pc and don't know how... Am I doing a backup just in case Twitch screws something up? To be honest, I am a bit OCD and the uniformity of how Twitch re-formats my phone numbers is very appealing to me. I wouldn't mind having my numbers formatted that way permanently. Would I still have to do a backup in that case? Does having the phone numbers formatted this way allow you to use the stock text messaging app (I'm assuming it is because it's already on my X2) instead of Textra? I LOVE Textra but for the time I am still on TMobile I cannot use it because of the terrible TMobile service in my area... Thanks for your time!

Hello,
You can try using the stock app but if your always on EDGE your phone will not preform as intended when EDGE was industry standard anything over 4 MEGA Pixel photos wasnt even a thought. At minimum you need to be on 3G or HSPA+ which is what Tmobile uses. Check your APN settings Google this ---> apn-settings.com/t-mobile-apn-settings-step-by-step-configuration/
Not sure if the new Tmobile 4G extender will work since the radio in the Mediapad X2 does not even support US 4g networks. At this point I suggest trying stock app if that doesn't work its time to switch carriers. I had to switch and never looked back I live in the city and in my dead zone only ATT worked for me. If you don't want to go threw the activation process just find a friend with ATT and invite them to your house check if they have good signal.
When you backup your original contacts I do mean EXPORT as shown here Google this ---> support.google.com/mail/answer/24911?hl=en
Twitch hasn't erased any of my contacts I only recommend export/backup as a standard with any personal info... Being victim of three hard drive failure in my PC and did I mention they where all in a row. Twitch does have the ability to return your contacts to original format.
As for you formatting they will always need to be set as International prefix in order to use stock messaging app. It works very good for me.
I am not sure about your last question about the SD looking icon? When you launch the app on the top right it should recognize your county format with a flag and to the right of that you have another drop down option select International prefix. At the bottom right of your screen select save and you should be done.

Thanks also for the Google link to help with the Contacts backup! That should work! I just want to thank everyone for the extra mile they go to with explanations for the clueless (me) lol!

MHA-L29 - US Ver / Stock Messaging App

I have been all through the settings, for the life of me I can not find a setting when sending a group text to actually send the message to the group, rather then sending everyone I selected in the group a single message. I downloaded a third party app but I like the stock all. Is there a setting somewhere I am missing?
Thanks in advance
Same problem here since December on international MHA-L29C636. Only workaround I have found is the Textra app. If you get an answer I would love to hear it.

Hmmm.... I have the L29 ( US version ) and I don't see that option....
I appreciate the suggestion, but that option does not even appear in the advanced settings of the stock messaging app on this phone. The phone is an MHA-L29C636 running build 158.
Well, I have the US version...I never had any issues with group messaging....though I never paid any real attention to it. I just updated my phone to the new US build...

Where? What version are you running? I also have the US Version.
This one...
How did you get the new version?
...FunkyHuawei.... Google it...
Even though you can download it, you can't load it unless you spoof the Huawei server on the response...
Process was simple. Was able to use the Huawei HiSuite app with a host file...
My phone is totally stock...

New Gear Software Update Pushed Today (14th Sept)

Fixed the voice recognition. Tested and worked. Not sure what else was fixed in this release but thought I'd start a thread for it.

well my test consisted of opening the messages app, replying to an existing text by speaking. The watch asked if I wanted to send the speech as an audio file or actual text. I selected text and off it went. recognized all words I spoke "Just trying to send a test".

size - 18.8MB
- S Voice - Accuracy and performance improvements
- Incoming message vibration notification support extended to 3rd party apps
Just got an update as well (T-Mobile) R735TUVU3CQH2 around 25.5MB Version 2.3.2.2
US wifi watch updated this morning and I got none of that. Voice reply still doesn't work.
Hello to everyone. I'm dealing problems after last update of gear app software. Every time Gear S2 tries to exchange data (reconnection, data to Shealth, watch apps install) with Galaxy S5 (android 5.0 and android 6.0.1) it uses 99% of phone cpu for 50-60sec, , sucking both batteries (phone and watch). Tried on android 5.0, android 6.0.1, rooted or not. Is there any ideas what is wrong?

EMUI 10.1.0.135 beta on EVR_AL00

It's my second time I've finally broken through all obstacles of the Chinese language and managed to subscribe for EMUI 10.1 beta. And it was worth it.
That was yesterday and today I received the shiny new beta update. As usual after installation, I firstly transform the appearance into pure Android (in my opinion there is no such flexible launcher as EMUI when you get the hang of it).
After adaptation, I started to explore my brand new device. It's a lot to try, I'm attaching some pictures for the first impression.
For those who want to try it, there is still time to catch the train. It's only for the Chinese model, you must install Huawei Club app from Huawei app store and crawl through Chinese instructions. Good luck.
Thanks

Ok. Please don't be upset if the last part wouldn't be exactly accurate. The result is to be achieved by trial and error. It's hard to reproduce the exact procedure in Chinese and there are different highlighted links all lead to the final result. Below you have marked some of those links.
What is important:
You must be registered by Huawei as Chinese (you can switch this later back).
No Chinese sim is needed but you have to register your phone number for verification purposes.
You must be on 10.0.200 (if you are not, separate instruction is available for the upgrade).
You must download Huawei club app from Huawei store. Sooner or later you must register yourself with this club.
Follow beta application steps as you can see below. As I mentioned before there might be some errors incorporated and you can get to the same result from a different sequence of steps.
You'll be informed when you succeed. And soon after your beta license is going to appear in system upgrade settings.

Theme is dark IOS from here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.deishelon.lab.huaweithememanager
customized and with sans fonts.
the icon pack is:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.natewren.materialthings
it's a paid version but I think that the free will do as well:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.natewren.materialfree
and the whole point is in limitless customization enabled with:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mixapplications.themeeditor
how you activate google assistant???
I've always had Google Assistant. Installed it from GPS. Only I can't use a hotword from any screen, I have to either open the Assistant or use it in Android auto. That's good enough for me.
And Huawei strict battery policy kills it now and then and I must open it again.
Is it resolved sound problems.

What is a low volume? Volume on the loudspeakers is just below the distortion level and the sound is good as it could be on the phone.
Volume on my wired earphones goes to the limit of the sustainable level.
On Bluetooth, earpieces are just loud enough but I guess that the loudness depends on the Bluetooth device a lot.
And yes, Dolby is active.
Besides, what I noticed so far is that 2 Google apps sometimes lags significantly after upgrade: Google and Gplay store. assistant with Android auto works flawlessly though.
And the camera is completely renewed. New functionality, new possibilities, better menu, similar to the new Huawei phones. I haven't had a chance to really try it yet.
Every on on internet sying that android 10 dystroyed the sound of the phone?
There is no bass
Low volume means decreased loudness of the phone
Bluetooth is a little messed on 10.1. my Sony mx buds cut in and out sometimes
Installed beta first time. Still no problems faced.

Don't have problems anymore either. Updated play store and Google.
There are no projects in the app. I signed up on the webpage but didn't have any beta confirmation. What am I doing wrong?

When I get to step 6, the blue dialogue box is white, and if I press it I get a black screen with Chinese writing. I am already on 10.0.200. Thanks for any input!

Hello. What is your model number? And in what region do you have your Huawei ID? In my case I have the EVR-AL00 and the region I used was China for the process. Also I had debloated the phone but reverted it back to clean stock for the process (because I removed some stuff that didn't let me get the beta profile). Btw, I don't think the region matter because now with my country region I can do the steps and everything goes well as I posted. If you want I can make a screen recording showing. Let me know.
After signup just need join the beta programme. Click that white box witj chinese for joining beta and downloading beta profile.
