Hi guys,
Unfortunately today has been a very upsetting and sad day for me. I took a risk buying a OnePlus One and it has been the best phone that I have ever had, although today has shown that even though it was amazing for me I have had a bad experience with it. As many of you may already know; the OnePlus One is very hard to insure due to it not being the most popular phone and today my phone screen has smashed. Although many of you may think that I'm an idiot for dropping my phone - it was a complete accident and fell out of my pocket, out of the car door and hit a stress point in the bottom left corner. This stress point on the phone was fairly spectacular as it damaged the screen itself with spider cracks running up the whole phone screen and the digitiser failing completely.
I took it apart with my Dad and we both saw that the screens below had smashed as well.
So, apart from the story - what phone should I get?
I'm deciding - although it was the best phone I've ever had - to step away from the OnePlus for two reasons.
The first being that it is hard to insure and even harder to find somewhere in the UK that will actually attempt a repair.
The second being that I've read that in some cases they are charging the price of the phone to repair the screen and getting a hold of a new one is harder because of the invite system that I will have to become a part of again.
So, after that long story - What phone do you think I should get? The LG G3 looks very appealing but the thought of the back buttons puts me off a little bit. Although, there is the iPhone 6 Plus... (If I had no mind).
Could you recommend a phone and why?
Cheers. Jon
This really should go in the dedicated thread.

That said, perhaps a Nexus 6 or a Note 4? Both great phones with top-tier specs.
The Nexus being a Nexus with stock Android and customization freedom, and the Note 4 with the spen and great screen and camera. (and a MicroSD, of thatmatters to you).

Well I heard great things about Samsung Galaxy Note 4. The photos you make are clear and bright- plus it's a rear and front camera as an extra bonus. The phone has a pen included, where you can copy- paste anything you'd like and share it with friends or save it for later.
Some phone don't have these add ons so if you are a gadget freak, I'd pick this one. Good Luck
Whatever you get, put a damn case on it.

Well put, Planterz.
Well, i should recommend Sony Z3, a Good Phone with high quality build...
Another could be a Nexus 6, excellent phone if you like pure Android, and fast UI and work.
I have had my Verizon Note 5 for 9 days now. I really want to love it. Like a wayward child I want to hold it and tell it everything will be ok. I want to look at its beautiful face and ignore the behavioral issues.
But I just can't.
I have had every note since Note 2 (and Note 2 with unlocked BL is STILL my daily driver.)
But with the note 5 i just cant get over everything that makes it a non note
I have been told that USB-otg works, but I mainly used the Samsung multimedia doc (from note 2) that allowed keyboard and mouse, charging and HDMI out.
The LG v10 seems like a step in the right direction... if only it weren't so blasted ugly!
Those of you who have had the phone longer... help me get out of my funk! cus as of right now this thing is getting returned in 3 days.
If you don't like it, return it. No one here needs to convince you of anything.
The is no right or wrong. To me the stylus makes it a Note, and I'm ok with the features. If you're not, that's ok - return the phone.
It is a lot of money if you aren't happy with it.
For me the V10 was too darn big. But that's me, you might be fine with it.

The note 5 is a damn good phone. I've had mines since it came out. If u what a unlocked boot loader then return ur note 5 and buy one from Samsung. Yes I would love to have a unlocked boot loader but we all know how vzw is.The s-pen makes it a note not the boot loader being unlocked. The size makes it a note as well. There is to much good that out weigh the bad. Love my note 5 for now.

Honestly, I have had my Note 5 since launch day and minus a few issues (on Verizon's end, NOT Samsung's), I love it. It does everything I need it to do plus more. I really love the S-Pen and the rapid charging. Battery life is fine with me (if you honestly don't have an external battery charger, wall charger, or car charger then you shouldn't have a high end device). The picture quality is unbelievable, etc. Honestly, to me, the Note 5 is on top of the food chain but this is your preference and your decision. If you're note happy with it, then return it and get another phone that you're happy with (that's the beauty of a 15 day return policy, haha). Don't spend a ton of money and settle for a phone that isn't meeting your needs. There's no right or wrong answer on purchasing a device.
I'm a longtime HTC fanboy (I just dig the aesthetic of Sense and HTC's general skinning) and have always hated TouchWiz. However, now that you can do some base themeing, it's a better experience.
At the end of the day, Samsung Pay is pretty damned awesome. That alone will keep me on the N5 for a long while.
This was my feedback to samsung on the note 5. Not that they'll consider it, but nonetheless, I feel the same way.
I previously had a note 3, and absolutely loved it. It was the perfect phone for a power user. But time passed and it was time to upgrade and I figured I'd try the note 5. I'm regretting that decision more by the day. Honestly, if I could replace the battery, root it, and it had an ir blaster, it would be my new perfect phone. Nevermind it didn't get the spec bump this year - it's fast enough really. The phone is pretty, but a phone is a functional device first and accessory second.
I thought I could handle not having a replaceable battery - I was wrong. I'm on the road a lot and being able to replace the battery is invaluable. 3000 mah isn't cutting it.
I need to be able to modify the software if I want. I don't feel like I own my phone, and I resent it more the longer I think about it. I realize there are other options but, honestly, I really do like samsung phones. And I want to like this one.
I loved being able to control my entire htpc from my phone. I'm probably still a bit of a niche user in this regard, but why remove the ir blaster?
Bottom line, I'm going to have to sell this phone and get a Note 4, and hope you guys get it right next time. This one was a total miss for me. I wanted a newer note - you gave me a blown up S6 with a stylus.

Thais is exactly how I feel about the Note 5. I've upgraded, heck, pre-ordered two Note 3 and two Note 4, but I didn't upgrade to the Note 5. I just felt so under whelmed, plus the fact that it can't be rooted just sucks. It's a huge let down considering I have a Note 4 Developer Edition.
Ultimately I went with the Nexus 6P. I'm really liking it so far, and the more I use it, the more I can't justify the $200 price premium of the Note 5.

I've had many phones over the past year and settled with the Note 5. Although it's locked and unrootable I still chose it because I can do everything I liked to do on a rooted phone and more. No I can't physically remove unwanted system apps but I can hide and disable them with package disabler or the debloat tool. Removing them matters little because you can't make the system partition smaller to use the space anyways. The size is fixed. As for the IR blaster I never used it much and always ended up disabling it. The s-pen works the best out of all the note series I have used going back to the Note 3. If anyone is thinking about purchasing this phone or any other I suggest that you do your research before doing so. I had the S6 before this and loved it but always wished it was a bit larger and had the s-pen. So when the Note 5 came out I jumped on it and have been happy since day one. Yes root and a unlocked bootloader would be nice but I'm not about to switch to a inferior phone or carrier for that. It's just not worth it to me.
My Note 5 performs flawlessly
Just got the hotspot working. Started a VPN connection, then fired up foxfi free edition. Foxfi uses it's own vpn, so it disconnected mine. When foxfi timed out, hotspot stayed up. Not sure why, but it's working through the native tether. No VPN is connected now (full speed connection).
I like it, somewhat. I waited until I could find the right price. $400 on Craigslist. All set up and good to go. I don't like the size, it's too narrow for my hands. It is snappy and responsive. The camera is nice. I do groan a lot, missing things like the IR blaster and removable SD card. It's a nightmare to load everything on here and I dread the impending factory resets. But it's good enough, I guess.
I could have been more impressed though. Samsung set the bar way too high with the Note4 and Edge advancements they made when they released them. They have done no such thing on the Note5 though.
I don't really have complaints, so to speak. But it really could have been more innovative, as past Notes have been. It is still great. I do like it. But my expectations have not been exceeded as they always have been in the past with Samsung.

Agree. If it wasn't for Samsung pay I would've actually ditched this phone and went another route.

It's been over 2 weeks, and I'm still not fully in love with this phone. But, I'm loving the really nice screen and camera. Cause I vid chat with my girlfriend, play retro snes games and watched alot of HD tv shows from my DVR.
Would be nice if the note had the same curved edges as the edge plus. But then again, I prefer the curved back more because its easier to hold. Im sure they could have pulled off both if they really wanted to. However that would be one less change they can make make for the note 6 next year.

Awesome. I barely pull out my wallet. It's just convient. Will see how long it takes for more supported banks, but by first quarter next year I'd things haven't picked up, I'll probably ditch my note.

So just if anyone is interested.
He said right now there is no time frame for the return, advised it will probably be based on what he's seeing and hearing that it will need returned in the next 60 days (i.e. really was just worried it'd be 15 days), which gives plenty of time to figure out another option.
I upgraded to the Note 7 from an Iphone 6S Plus and had to return my iphone due to the lease. So having no other sprint phones I was told i could wait for another device to come out within the 60 days (LG V20 maybe, would like to see some reviews) or purchase a device outright (I would do a note 4 personally, used) and have no installment plan and be good to go once something new comes out like the S8 S8E.
It does kind of sound like, but no 100% confirmation, like they are going to be forcing you to return your devices. Just no date listed yet. Those that want to keep them should keep eyes and ears out. Would not be surprised if a black listing of IMEIs comes around at some point as a forced safety feature. You "own" the phone but not the right to use it on their network.
Yeah I was told the same. My next option would be the LG V20 or the Google Pixel XL. Crossing finger that they let us keep our Note 7 that doesn't get hot when charging.
I had to turn my Note 4 due to lease when i got the 7. I want my upgrade back and a Note 4 until the next Note or what ever Samsung will call it. I can't go back to a smaller screen and i use thw S-pen everydat

Mine only gets hot when I use it heavily while charging, but so has every other phone I've ever owned, including apple products. My iphone would cook my hands playing some games. The pixel XL seems out for me, would have to buy it outright it appears and it didn't look like it had SD card support. I've seen mixed reviews on both phones, but a few have favored the V20 over the Pixel. I think I'll have to see it in person. I am mildly turned off by an IPS display, I really like AMOLED and it's what brought me back to samsung (knew I was coming back to android.)

I've been looking at picking up a used one. They sell for around $200-250 in decent shape. Sure is a lot better for me to do that, have no installment billing and wait out a decent phone to be released. I may put off for the V20 to get more reviews. I am leaning super hard towards a Note 4. I liked my Note 4 when I had it and think I'd like to have an S8E if it turns out to be a decent upgrade. Would be awesome to see the note 7 mildly reworked as the S8E with no stylus (I know you and others use it a lot, I don't use it nearly enough to be bothered that much.)

I've been told by Customer Services, Tele Sales,. AND Tech Support that the Note 5 will be coming back in stock. I Wouldn't mind the note 5, just hopefully we can get a port of the Note 7 rom for the note 5. I Loved my note 5. The "edge" function on the note 7 I rarely use.....I mean....extremely rarely. It's a nice feature, but honestly I feel Samsung should give everyone who bought a note 7 a note 5 for free. That's just my opinion though
Hey guys,
Just a place for former Note 7 users to vent / discuss etc. Going through a recall sucks. Going through it twice sucks more.
We can use this as a "phone comparison" thread talking about software differences or other things you miss, or whatever.
Just traded in my replacement Note 7 for the edge this morning (Canadian exynos version).
Missing the bigger screen, more symmetrical body, spen, and Grace UI already! Man, even the theme store is gimped!

do you find that the S7 edge's steeper curves/edges make it harder to use the phone one handed? from what i read, the Note 7 was a huge improvement over the S7E in that because the curve got toned down a bit. on the S7E, i hear people complain that when they use it one hand and move their thumb around, alot of times the part of the palm under the thumb touches the touches, which lead to unwanted taps or for the screen to not respond because part of the palm is on the edge.
i have the note 7 and am considering switching over to the S7E, but i think the steeper edges would annoy me if the touch issue is indeed the case.

I was worried about that. athesticlly I much prefer the Note 7 edges, especially while watching media. I personally haven't had a problem with accidental touches.
I am now convinced both of my Note 7s (original and replacement) had a bad fingerprint sensor. They would both not register consistently, especially when my hands were cold (Im Canadian lol!). The S7E nails it every time.
At least my S7E is literally newer. Original built Aug 09, replacement Aug 31.

Well not quite.
I pre-ordered the Note 7 for $1050, initially paying a $50 deposit (plus tax, coming to $56)
I then took advantage of the trade in ($200 for a dead flip phone) and paid tax on the remainder. My total bill was $976.
I also received the Gear Fit 2 as a pre order gift.
I just Traded in my 2nd (replacement) Note 7 for an S7E. I was given the $100 trade in (pretax credit) and the $200 pre tax trade in from the original Note 7 order. My total "debit" after the credits was $652. After my $976 "credit" I was left with $317 which was refunded to me. Both exchanges I only gave the phone, and was not asked for accessories.
In summary,
I paid $659 total tax in.
I have: An S7E, Gear Fit 2, 2 sets of Note 7 accessories (Chargers, cables, adapters, headphones etc.....and I kept the last spen for laughs).
So, I have some freebies and an S7E for $659 Canadian total. Is that worth the hassle of going through 2 recalls? For me it was an extra hassle as I am I Pilot with air Canada.
All in, I am impressed with the way Samsung handled this so far. They have kept me as a customer.
As a note, I purchased the Note 7 (preorder) outright from Samsung Canada at a Samsung Store. Both recalls were official from Health Canada, and as a Pilot I had to navigate bans from the FAA and Transport Canada (as well as the regulatory authorities of the other countries I fly into and out of).

Ah the tax was the problem for you which is why you got less money back. I live in a tax free country and I heard from my friend that he got S7 Edge and the money which made him pretty happy.
Though funny that you are a pilot and had a Note 7, because with the Note 7 exploding I wonder how people travelling through plane or those who were like you managed so far.

I got caught "on the road" while the initial wave occurred. Samsung Canada totally dropped the ball. I went directly to the Samsung store upon getting back from my flights. At that point there was no official recall anywhere and they were referring to it as a "voluntary exchange program". They refused to refund me, and told me my device was perfectly safe. I did the right thing and put my Note 7 in sage storage and dug my old trusty HTC One M7 out of the drawer. During my next pairing, the official recall rolled out, the FAA and Transport Canada reacted etc. Samsung still refused to give me a loaner device, and wouldn't accept my old one. Went to work again, Samsung started accepting returns, my new "safe model" arrived etc. I got back and had a week off. I enjoyed my new Note 7 and Samsung shipped a return box for my old one. Off I went to fly again and boom, bad reports coming and then a quick 2nd recall lol!
Samsung did things right the 2nd time.
Tax free the math would have worked out to paying $850 after trade in for the Note 7 (1050-200), then getting the new S7E for $550 (850 list - 200 trade in credit - 100 credit). I would have walked away with $300 exactly. Due to our taxes being higher on the initial purchase (math lol!) I actually ended up with more.
If you count the $250 value of the Gear fit 2 and the value of the 2 USB C quick chargers and accesories (lets call that $100, but probably worth more) than really we were not treated that badly.
That being said the Samsung rep (not a Samsung store employee, an actual rep from Samsung canada) said he expects former Note 7 owners to get a "sweet" offer on the spiritual successor to the Note series, along with a generous trade in value for our S7 or S7Es.

Sosad, this is one of the funny feature N7 offered to me. Actually, S7E ports can enable many of the N7 pen feature, at least I can use my ADONIT MINI stylus till the next Note arrives...

do you find that the S7 edge's steeper curves/edges make it harder to use the phone one handed? from what i read, the Note 7 was a huge improvement over the S7E in that because the curve got toned down a bit. on the S7E, i hear people complain that when they use it one hand and move their thumb around, alot of times the part of the palm under the thumb touches the touches, which lead to unwanted taps or for the screen to not respond because part of the palm is on the edge.
i have the note 7 and am considering switching over to the S7E, but i think the steeper edges would annoy me if the touch issue is indeed the case.

With one handed it happens, but it happens more if you're laying on your back and holding the phone.
two things can decrease the effect.
1- put a back cover, which will decrease the touching side areas.
2- this only affects the keyboard, which is the most annoying problem:
Settings > Language and Input > Samsung Keyboard > Keyboard size>
decrease the width of the keyboard.
While the above may be temporary fixes, for me it's not acceptable at all, Samsung should optimize its software to understand unwanted touches and ignore them, for me the whole edge thing is crap

Dang, my S7E was manufactuered July 1 according to this app. After about 3 weeks of ownership I noticed that the home button only works when depressed in the middle - when you press the left side it doesn't register as a click. On top of that, the audio crackles frequently when watching Youtube videos as well as when recording videos with the camera. I tried taking it back to Best Buy, but they refused to honor an exchange!

Samsung never stops failing with it's home button. Had a problem on S4 now my S7E home button clicks like with a brand new speaker inside it. Fells so cheap, my TAB S2 have a much better home button, dunno if replacing a device will help... a lot of ppl saying that button is clicky as hell and no one will help with that problem :/
There is no screen capture GIF option yet... but you can use an samsung add-on to capture gifs from your camera on the fly.
I'm a Note7 Refugee as well, after the recall I would have done the Note5, but no sd card so I opted for the international S7 Edge with Exynos instead of the t-mobile version with SD820. (It was cheaper, faster, multitasks way better and has better battery life. I'm relatively happy with it other than no S Pen. The "my knox" is less refined than the "secure folder" we had on Note7. I hope they update S7 Edge to include the "Secure Folder" version, as it is one of the best software features of the device.
So basically features the S7 Edge needs from the Note7 that are actually theoretically possible are:
-Animated Gif Screen Capture
-Secure Folder
-Always On Display that shows third party app notifications.
-GraceUX
If they get us those, Waiting till next year's "note" or "S8 Pro" device that has a stylus will be tolerable.

They should adopt a "capacitive" home button like the HTC 10.
Much more responsive and not prone to failure.

How is yours? Mine is extremely clicky and loud in the middle ok in left and right... If i press the button of the bottom only then there is no sound... Rly sand when flagship device feels so cheap just because of a home button. My friend also have s7e and his home button is more acceptable but still rly sad there is no fix for this stupid home button sound... Maybe only time will help...

Mine makes a click sound but seems to work well.
It seems no different then my 2 Note 7s, My Wife's 3 Note 4s (thank God for my carrier's protection plan lol!) or my Mother in Law's Note 5.
Just flew with a guy who's S4 has a really crappy home button.
I am holding out hope Sammy will switch to capacitive.

How do I get S Note so I can view my old cloud sync'ed notes? This is probably obvious, but I cannot find it.
Just wondering, now that the Note 8 has been unveiled and we know for sure it's specs etc, are you inclined to jump ship from the S8+?
For me the differences are so minor. I wouldn't use the pen for instance, 0.1 inches bigger, big wow, 2 cameras, big deal, £100 dearer, not doing it for me.
My eyes are set on the LG V30, what about you?
[UPDATE]
After all the above, I'm actually writing this on a N8.
Blame the wife, her Z5 gave up the ghost and she loved the S8+ so much. What's a dutiful husband to do? Didn't make sense having 2 S8+'s, the rest is history.
Between what we already have on the new S series and all the Note 8 leaks we've been pretty aware of what we'll be doing after release for some time now. Maybe yesterday's reveal might have changed some minds of those on the fence but for the most part if you've been a Note user for a while you'll likely want to go back which is what I'll be doing eventually. Just not within the next month.
I prefer to wait at least a month just to monitor how the release has been going and see if there's any hardware issues. This caution on my part served me well last year when that whole Note 7 fiasco occurred. I was getting ready to jump on the new Note back then because my Note 5 was getting long in the tooth and I was dearly missing Micro SD support and the prospect of having a Note with a strong IP was just too tempting to pass up on. Luckily I held my ground after launch and realized what was going on with the batteries. I actually was going to pull the trigger right before the second recall happened. It wasn't meant to be. Hoping everything will be fine this time around with the Note 8 and I can finally, finally have both Micro SD and IP rating on my Note device. Finally.
This S8 Plus is sick but it's difficult to be without that S-Pen. If the Note series was only an S device with an S-Pen that would do it for me. The extra bump in specs that the Note series usually brings along with is just the cherry on top for me. I could take it or leave it but give me the S-Pen.

I get you, but bar some minor tweaking the Note 8 is just an S8+ with a £100 pencil stuck to the side, lol.

Seriously, I'm just joking. I realise that for some folks productivity requirements, this is an essential piece of kit. Just that for me it's not an 'enterprise' or productivity tool, so I'd never use it. I just like messing with phones and the differences here would probably only satisfy my fix for a day or so.

I've actually never even used any of my Note devices as an enterprise or productivity tool like their ads would suggest. I just prefer to enjoy interacting with my phone's display using that S-Pen. The built-in digitizer performs much, much, much better than any third party stylus can and the added tools built into the S-Pen makes things that much more easier to do various stuff.
Had the Note 7 and realized the pencil is just useless for me. Will stick to my S8+ and see what the Pixel XL 2 will bring.
Note 8 looks awesome its a beefed up version of the S8+ I’m deffo jumping ship i haven’t even used my S8+ it still got the factory stickers on mine i should have waited but with the NOTE 7 Fiasco i thought SAMSUNG wouldn’t release a new note till next year. but 6 gig ram and dual camera and dual sim roll on 24 September.
I'm definitely not jumping ship for one. I had a note 4 and I had so many performance & battery issues it wasn't funny. Plus the upgrades between the s8+ and note are so minute, the ram and the spen were the only thing holding me back. I just can't justify paying an extra few hundred dollars for it. I do miss my spen though...
For me, yes probably in a couple of months. I think my S8+ looks better and most lightly is better in hand as well but the S pen is what will make the difference for me.
Looks good, but not a fan of tbe spen and the minor changes. Dual cams and 6gb of ram is not worth the extra money. How much faster is 6gb of ram when multitasking?

Almost imperceptible.... from what I read it will be most useful to post process photos because of the dual camera.
I'm bypass the note 8.
