Root + Unlock - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello friends from XDA. I used to be an avid android user for many years starting with the release of the G1 and have had many devices and have a lot of experience as a flash whore over the years. Got in the hot tub a couple years ago and fried one of my phones and have been using an iphone ever since. I got my hands on a gs6 and would like to switch over but it needs to be unlocked.
Model: SM-G920A
Badeband G920AUCS5DPI1
Build: MMB29K G920AUCS5DPI1
So i need to know the best/easiest way to root AND unlock this fella. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Rooting can be done by using cf-autoroot, there's an official thread in the original development forum which contains instructions. Now about unlock, whereas previous s series phones could be network unlocked via root methods, the s6 cannot, you will need to use a paid method for this.

Well I cant find that model on the cf-autoroot forum. From what I can tell the ATT version (SM-g920A) has a locked bootloader? Anyone know how to unlock bootloader or if there is another way that works? I posted on the cf-autoroot forum and am still awaiting a response. Thanks for the help in advance!

Ah gosh that's right, I did a little research before in this as there was another user with this query, I'm sorry to say that 6.0.1 on your variant can't be rooted, the only root methods ever available was for the lollipop software version, there's no way to downgrade either as far as I know.

[Q] Questions about root methods (towelroot) and not "tripping" Knox

Just read some posts in the towelroot forum, and I had some questions - but first, a little about me:
I'm coming from an HTC Evo 4g LTE (Sprint) and I just switched to Ting (uses all Sprint towers & devices, just an a-la-carte payment plan as opposed to monthly)
Anywho, all this Knox business (and acquiring root for the S5) is new to me (but I am no newbie when it comes to root, just my first time owning a Samsung device.) I havent even had this phone for 24 hours yet.
Just wanted to know what build/kernel/Android version you were on when you attempted towelroot?
I am on Android 4.4.2 - Build: KOT49H.G900PVPU1AND2
I did not install the System OR Software Update that is in my notification list after activation. (Pretty much same rules were for the HTC Evo 4G LTE, it would update the bootloader to a version that was considered "unmoddable" at the time) and for that phone it was also called "S-OFF" (S stood for Security) - Im guessing Knox is somewhat similar...?
Also, what is the preferred root method for the G900P? I only know of towelroot and CF-Auto-Root (sp?) - I know Chainfire makes apps specifically for Samsung devices, but read an old post on another site that CF's method will "trip" Knox... is that still accurate?
Just wanted to be 100% confident in what I'm doing, before I attempt anything. (Again, I have a lot of experience in HTC devices; not so much with Samsung) :/
Any help regarding my device and acquiring root without "tripping" Knox is greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance! - zmag

To add to this I just purchased a S5 coming after an S1 and S3.
I am wondering if I have to worry about any updates on sprint locking me out. My S3 is on Verizon and luckily I rooted it before they came out with the update that locked it out. Can I go to the newest version that my phone wants to update me to without any fears of being locked out in the future?

Currently for the Sprint 900P (not the 860 Sport) NE5 is the latest build and I have not heard of anything being patched to not allow root.
However, it is best practice to always wait on taking any new Sprint updates until the devs have time to look into it and make sure root is still possible. There is no way for anyone to know what Sprint/Samsung/Google will patch in future updates. It usually only takes the dev community about a day or so to confirm whether existing root methods will still work.

Can I root model number sm-G930r7

Looking forward to rooting this phone so I can use my root apps and ect. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Anybody else with a Cspire gs7?

I think they mean to say he can't find the firmware for his phone. I personally haven't heard of Cspire so this may be why. The MetroPCS firmware took a while to be found. In any case, find your firmware HERE but I can't be sure it may be there. Good luck.

If your model number happens to be a SM-G930R7, I happened to find a working stock firmware to recover the OS back to working order. If you do have said model, I can set the files up somewhere for download and you just do the usual with Odin.

Straight Talk Galaxy S6 (SM-S907VL) Root/Recovery?

Hi, I recently damaged my S4 and decided to upgrade to the S6, so far I love the phone, got it new for $250
However since it's with straight talk in not one of the more common models and I can't really seem to find any information on it, I'm mostly hoping to find a way to root it, a custom recovery would be nice but I certainly don't need it
Has anyone had any experience with this device?
Or could someone maybe point me in the right direction?
Device: Galaxy S6 (Straight Talk)
Model: SM-S907VL
Baseband: S907VLUDU1APG8 (idk if that's important lol)
Android: 6.0.1
I appreciate any help that you guys might be able to give
I am looking for the same!
Would like to root and install CM.
Samsung S6 SM-907VL
I too got the "Black Friday" deal with this phone. It is Straight Talk and is a nice phone. I emailed a popular rooting developer and they have a list a mile long with phones their app will root. But it will not root this model. If someone finds an app that will root, please post.
Looking to root this model too. Could you flash a rom from one that uses the same board and chip set? Essentially turning it from a straight talk phone to Verizon , sprint, or at&t then proceed to root from there? Might be a noob question but I been wondering if it would work

You can not do that. Unless you want to brick your phone. I am searching now, will let you know if I come up with anything!

Well hopefully we can hear back soon, I've still had pretty much no luck with this model, seems it's too little know for anything custom yet
Has anyone tried KingRoot?
I've tried Kingroot a few times now, the device is not supported unfortunately
Need root and 7.0 rom!
Seriously been looking for root since I got this phone. Is anyone even working on a root for it? Would the root for sm-s903vl work for the sm-s907vl or would it brick it? At this point I don't even care if I trip Knox. I just want ROOT!!
Fruitless searching for method to root sm-s907VL S6
Has anyone found anywhere that has information about rooting this model or atleast maybe the news that someone is working on it?! I have searched and searched and tried several different methods but nothing has worked yet. I really like this phone so far but I really gotta have my customization fix for it. Thank you to anyone who can give me some hope and of course if I find anything I'll post it here.
Thanks
I don't suppose anyone has had any luck with this device?
I'm having trouble finding stock firmware as well, I was thinking I might try a couple methods for different models but that's a little foolish without a way back to stock...
As a side note, don't buy straight talk phones, nothing seems to exist for them xD
You can get the stock software at www.firmware.gem-flash.com... I've used their copy personally and had no problems..
Device: Galaxy S6 (Straight Talk)
Model: SM-S907VL
I have the same issue and have tried several root tools and none have worked yet. Maybe some devs will get it working for one of them soon.
I have tried everything. If there is somebody smart enough to root the galaxy s6 s907vludu through straightalk please let me know. I have been searching for months. If anybody can find something for this unrootable phone please let me know.
I have model s906l it's an early sts6 and Im currently running s907vl firmware. I think the s906l can be rooted but it's running Android 5.02. My point being if you really want root maybe you can flash the s906l firmware using oden. Update nope I was able to flash up but cant flash back down. Stuck on mm without root for now.

I don't think you can downgrade an OS. Bootloaders would normally not allow it.
I tried flashing the 5.0.2 SM-S906L rom on the SM-S907VL through Odin and it gives a secure boot check fail.

I am having the same issue, I have the S6 SM-S907VL as well, I am very pleased with the phone itself as well as the cell carriers service but not having any developers hacks & mods or stock firmware or rooting methods for it is really frustrating

I have the same model also I wish now that never seen it. I've had an LG Stylo 3, and Motorola phone all of which I could easily download a ROM from here and easily customize the phone. This phone has proven impossible.

N915A flash question

Hey guys. I'm totally new here so my question may seem a bit silly. Accept my apology if so. Also searched through posts and threads to find my answer but wasn't successful.
I just bought an unlocked N915A from ebay and I want to flash it with another ROM. Like N915F. Is it possible at all?
I'm in Australia and I don't use AT&T network (I use Optus) so its okay if my phone doesn't work on AT&T networks anymore. The purpose is to create root access. Because apparently it's not possible to root N915A yet.
Appreciate your time guys.
cheers
P.S.
I can return the item with a small postage fee and buy another model. Like N915F. But I have to do it within 15 days! So... yeah, I highly appreciate if anyone can help.
Return it. The 915A has a locked bootloader whereas the 915f bootloader is unlocked showing for custom recoveries and custom ROMS.

Right okay cool thanks for that. I have bad news for you, because your phone has a locked bootloader it cannot be rooted at this point until an exploit is found. I even had a look over in the At&T s6 forums and there's not much going on. Sorry mate.

That sucks but thanks for the straightforward answer. But there's really 0 options for me at this point? Not even downgrading or flashing? (Just some terms I've picked up, don't exactly know what those mean)

Unfortunately not, downgrading is when going from one version to the previous, due to how samsung setup their bootloader, trying to say go from nougat to Marshmallow is not possible so you will always remain on nougat. Flashing is commonly done via a recovery and a piece of software called odin, every phone has a recovery but most root things need you to have a custom recovery like twrp this can only be achieved via having root, odin is used to flash stock Samsung firmwares. Hope that helps a bit. For the time being my advice to you is to keep looking at the s6 at&t forums from time to time, at some point they may come out with a root exploit that works.
