Porting Android TV to Nexus 5 - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, it's my first message on the forum even if I'm sticking with it since the first Nexus devices, thank you for all your work. I would like to know if it's possible to port a Rom from the Nexus Player to our device with a working Leanback Launcher and Cast features. It would be really interesting to be able to convert our powerfull device to an Android TV-like box connecting it to a 1080p TV. I am aware that requires a lot of work on the compatibility side due to the dofferent hardware but seems that the Nexus has all the features needed for such use.
Thank you. Have a nice day.

I just posted this response to a similar ATV port thread:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-explorer/general/help-port-android-tv-t3686800
I had the same question and this is my very first post too. Recently bought the Shield TV and while setting it up I was like “Why can’t phone h/w do this?” I have an old Nexus 5 (N5) with slimport and HDMI cable that puts out a nice display on my big TV.
So…
The N5 already had TWRP and LineageOS 14.1 (LOS) on it and that works very well. I use open-gapps for google apps. The N5 is called Hammerhead.
I see where open-gapps has tvstock build with the ATV framework apps (TIF core and base apps for play store and youtube etc.).
I’ve been playing with different configurations of the tvstock load on top of latest N5 lineage build. I have it booting and into ATV launcher. Several apps fail at boot time and it has limited capability so far.
Mods for tvstock install so far:
gapps-config.txt with most of base lineage apps disabled (audio, music, recorder, mail, etc.)
installer.sh:
--- mod to force the device_type to tv and set the core apps to tvcore
--- Mod to remove use of ATV’s setup wizard (setupwraith) that seems to crash and not allow launcher. Enabled normal LOS setup. The ATV setup also seems to disable ability to enable developer options too.
I created an XDA account just to explore creating a thread or something to see if anyone else has attempted ports. Web searches have not given much. Some RPi 3 info, Odroid boards and the Linaro stuff but that didn’t help me any as they don’t get into the details of how to configure the builds.

Have you made any progress with this "mod"?
I also have an old N5, but don't know if it can be turned into an Android TV-like device. Would be nice, since it can use google assistant, has good hardware, etc.
If you do manage to get it "fully" working, please post a step by step guide on what to install and what works what doesnt.
cheers!

Xtreamer Multi Console

just came across this one.
looks like the minix with custom rom for games.
was wondering if XBMC is indeed playing ok on an android based machine ?
http://xtreamer.net/MultiConsole/index/console-with-hand.jpg
http://www.xtreamer.net/MultiConsole/index.html
Anyone got this?
anyone?
to buy or not to buy?
i got this.
its working ok. i guess if you do not mess around with things (like i do) its working fine. i am looking for an alternative rom for some time, but did not have the guts to try something out.
xbmc is working fine there is a preinstalled version but i installed the one from the homepage, because it is the latetes version. sometimes its not working like i would like it to work, but i am not shure if it is my network router or nas or the xtreamer.
I bought it but disappointed and it has lots of problems which needs fix. I understand most of these devices would have problems out of box. But Xtreamer hasn't released any update since the product release in Feb.
The launcher is a bit interesting to look at but it has issues which messes up all apps running on it including XBMC. I'm not really fan of the air mouse and prefer IR remote.
I've bought it too.
I'm quite satisfied when I using it as media player, but I exeprience many lag especially during browser activity.
I wonder if it will be flash xtreamer multi console with nexus player firmware... I believe in google and I hope that it has create a good usability device..
kind regards,
luigi
No Xtreamer Multi-Console
I have this device (Xtreamer Multi-Console) and I just want to say - don't bay it!
Because:
1. Xtreamer Multi Console is very slow device
2. The original GUI is very ugly and uncomfortable [I've tried others launchers, but the console is still very slow]
3. The remote control is also very unusable (I had to buy additional keyboard for control [Logitech K400 2in1]
4. Too expensive
5. Xtreamer Multi-Console has a lot of bugs
New firmware
Hi all, with new firmware Xtreamer_MC_2.5_12.05.14 is best of
1) very fast
2) GUI is with new function, but I use Nova launcher or XBMC launcher.
3) Remote control have new function without cursor - best for XBMC
4) Multi Console is very very stable
Wauuuuuu

I don't sure about it.
In addition, to make it easy for use you must spend a lot of your time.
So I advice to try Asus Nexus Player
This device still has issues even with the latest firmware Ver 4.10.18 which was released nearly after a year.
Slow, status bar cutting the subtitles in XBMC and it's unstable device for sure and not worth the high price.
Has anyone tried other ROM(s) on this device and know they work?
Thanks
I also bought this ... thing ... on June 2014...
DO NOT BUY IT !!!!
It's the Slowest, nerve braking, time consuming piece of ... well you know what i mean
I can't imagine why a company sells equipment that in their imagination works in the best posible way, while the truth is that it doesn't.
- You click on Gmail, and you just HAVE to wait. And i has nothing to do with Wi-Fi signal or internet speed.
- You try to open the new Kodi (ex XBMC) and you wait.... and wait... and ok ... wait some more... and ... nope..
it throuhs you back to the main android screen. And so you click it again... and it works... (party time after 10 minutes)
:good::fingers-crossed:
- It takes about 3 minutes until the booting of the device finishes. And its Android right? :crying:
My Samsung Galaxy SII is way much faster than the Xtreamer. The booting finishes in less than a minute.
- My Xtreamer is using the Latest version... And i don't know what they fixed, but guys come on... It's slow..
- Also it has a banch of crapware installed, that I took the liberty to remove.
- And the Launcher just takes... the rest of the cake... It's simply the worst launcher i've seen... and i've seen many.
So i also changed that as well.
- So now my Xtreamer finishes launching in around 2 minutes and 35 seconds to 3 minutes and 10 seconds.
This is also crazy because the time difference is way to big.
- And the Wi-Fi streagth is not good. My Wi-Fi Modem is just 3 meters away, with no obsticles in the way,
and it gets 2-3 bars of signal.
I guess i have to find a way to install another Rom in this that might work better.
Anyone knows if there is any other rom i could install.
Thanks for reading.
Have a nice day people.

Shield Portable Marshmallow Options?

I see there are several custom marshmallow ROMs for the Nvidia Shield Portable. I'm thinking of upgrading as I'm sick of always having to move my apps around and not being able to update them. Adoptable storage solves that issue.
The ones I've found are:
CM: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nv...t/rom-cyanogenmod-12-shield-portable-t3042192
LineageOS: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nvidia-shield/development/rom-lineageos-shield-portable-t3562831
RR: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nvidia-shield/development/resurrection-remix-t3465740
Which of these is the most stable and supported? It appears CM or LineageOS.
Are any shield features supported on these? Such as (in order of importance):
Console mode
Controller
Gamestreaming (using official app, not moonlight)
Gamepad mapper
Thanks!
I'm running CM13 for the same reason, adoptable storage. Controller works but most shield specific stuff does not and other apps are needed. Let me know which one you end up on. Haven't booted mine for a while and thinking of wiping it again.
LineageOS is the continuation of CyanogenMod, I wouldn't use the cm builds anymore. And wow, somehow I missed RR getting released, need to go take a look at it sometime.
As for feature support (should apply to all custom ROMs, but I can't be 100% sure about RR):
Console mode: Yes, works fine.
Controller: Built-in works, wireless does not. Been working on the wireless support for years. I can make them pair and work, but there's no user friendly way to do so yet. See the end of the shield apps thread in the tablet section for more info.
Game stream official: No, does not work. As far as I can tell, support for the tegra 4 was completely removed from the M version of the shield hub streaming. As such, I cannot fix it. Moonlight does work, I am told. Don't use streaming myself as I don't have windows.
Gamepad mapper: This is virtually impossible to port from stock. Tincore is the alternative, but is a pain to set up.
Thanks for the informative response! Sounds like LineageOS is the way to go. If I decide I'm going to keep my portable I'll probably flash LineageOS (I'm debating selling it as I bought a GPD Win, but it's found a use as an Android TV system for my wife... so I'm debating keeping it or selling it and buying a cheap chinese system).
I've posted an atv build or two in my cm thread. Working on making atv work better in lineage right now. Been having troubles the last couple weeks, but have a couple more devs looking at the problems now. Once those settle down, I'll run another build for roth. It worked really well for the short time I had it installed. Might even end up my normal install once the kinks get worked out. But if you're interested in atv, I am working on it. If you want a really nice dedicated atv system, the shield android tv is amazing. For kodi, retroarch, etc, etc. A bit pricy, but totally worth it for the features.
Thanks, I'll look into it, but it's just a kitchen TV machine. All she really uses it for is CrunchyRoll and YouTube (hence why a cheap chinese system would be perfect).

Thank you for doing all this work! As you saw based on the other threads, I am using LineageOS now. I haven't fully tested everything yet, but so far things are mostly working well.

HELP : Port Android TV

I just want to ask that if Android TV hardware uses the same hardware as a mobile phone despite the resolution. isn't that possible that we can port Android TV to any device with Qualcomm chipset like our beloved PICO and connect it with TV using micro USB to HDMI like we mirror the screens and use it as our media server?
Tell me if I am wrong?
Well, I am a noob in porting Roms but not in the computer.
Please help? If you people have any Ideas.
it is my first post please be gentle.

Well i think you have a little progress, well i couldn't experiment it because my connection is limited and AOSP clone eat lots of data. Please let me know if you can boot it up and mirror it on tv.
I have a Nexus 9 and wish to have Android TV on it too. Some things work just by flashing tvstock gapps. But like settings doesn't work. We should work together to bring Android TV to our devices.

What is the best ROM for nvidia shield k1 2020

I recently installed a Custom Rom and the truth is that it is giving me more problems than solutions.
I would like to know which is the best custom Rom to install it and that I can use the tablet 100%.
What do you recommend?
Preferably android marshmallow or higher
Which custom rom did you install?
Hi
At the moment i testing out following Roms:
Stock 5.4 (debloated by myself)
This is the latest Rom from Nvidia which has all of the oem apps and features this Tablet offers. But on the downside it has slowdowns and freezes. In my case i debloated the Rom by myself where i deleted apps and the systemapps like twitch, squid, fallout and ota or feedback for example. With this the device is barely useable with some slowdowns and freezes but way better than before.
LineageOS 14.1 by Saint2k
This is a stable, fast and secure Rom. Secure because it get almost every month a security update like on a new device and is the perfect Rom if you use it as a normal Tablet and play Games from the Playstore. On the downside Nvidia Games doesnt work and the Old Controller is just useable with the USB Cable + OTG Adapter. Also the Console Mode is buggy and some say it has a bad Batterydrain at idle what i cant comfirm yet.
AOSPExtended 5.8
This Rom is based on Android 8.1 with working Hardware Acceleration. But it has the same issues with Nvidia Games and the Controller and Consolemode. This is the more stable Version of the AOSPExtended Roms.
AOSPExtended 6.7
This Rom is based on Android 9 and the Nvidia Games App works but only when the App Signature is deaktivated with LuckyPatcher. For the GAPPS you also should use the OpenGapps Nano Pack instead of the older MindtheGapp. This is the less stable Version i also had 1-2 Restarts and 3DMarks had some Graphicissues. But apart from this it is a interesting ROM where i hope the Developer still is working on
One thing to the DRM Issues:
Every Rom also the Stock One is affected from this. Its because our Devices has Disconnected from the Widevine Service run by Google without a warning or a reason.
That means no Copyright Protected Medias like from Netflix are able to use atm.
I hope this was helpful for you and dont hesitate to ask if you have more questions.
i am also curious about this! looking for the best ROM for my k1

If you flash Magisks it has a few different modules that fix DRM so Netflix and other streaming apps work correctly. I just learned about them the other day when I was checking out some options in Magisks Manager.
As far as the best custom ROM goes I am going to have to go with ASOP 6.8. The reason being is it is the only ROM that will let my PS4 controller connect wirelessly. Also, it is the only ROM that screen casting is working for me on. However, it does not work when I use cast by swiping down on the screen and selecting it. I have to download a 3rd party app to get it to work. I found one the other day that worked perfect for allowing me to watch Cinema apk movies on my TV. I ended up factory resetting my tablet though and now I cannot remember what app it was.

Cool that means you be able to watch Netflix, Amazon, ... In Full HD ?
Because i also tried out the liboemcrypto disabler on my rootet oem tablet and i was able to start at least the netflix app but it wasn't going above 540p i would say because the Widevine CDM Securitylevel is now L3 before it was L1 with only Current HDCP Level stated as "Disconnected"
But i try out the second modul with DRM in name when the Tablet is done with charging

I tried the 5.8 aex 5.8 and it worked very well, until playing a google play game I realized that the tablet was locked and I closed the apps. Apart from that the screen mirroring does not work, it freezes the image.
Now I have installed the 14.1 , it works very well, the same game freezes, but it takes a lot longer. And this standby spends little battery, but on consumes that gives taste. And with this screen mirroring does not work with a smart tv, like stock.

What I'm looking for in a rom for my tablet is: to be able to play google play games, something demanding (like when I buy it), also be able to use screen mirroring to watch videos and movies on smart tv. And if it's possible for the battery to last.

Hi
In your case i would give the Unofficial LineageOS4.1 from Saint2k a try. Its fast, reliable, and secure because of the almost monthly security updates. Also Games from the PlayStore shouldn't be a problem. I also have a mirroring option which gave me no issues so far.

Ok i tried the screen mirroring again and you are right it also crashes for me when i start it direct with the button from the dropdown menu. When i use it to cast the youtube app it works fine for me and thats the only thing i use it for atm so thats the reason i didnt notice it.
About the demanding Games i play occasionaly COD Mobile with the Tablet. Its really slow at starting because most of the time the game does updates and loads a lot of annoying ads
It just needs a bit of patience but when you actually in the match itself it runs just fine and it doesnt crash a lot for me.

I recently upgraded from a 2 year old 14.1, to the latest. I found on the androidfilehost for the-saint2k sometimes had the latest on the right side, under recent files. I checked now and its updated to the latest
https://androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=297059
I found the kernel from BitObession
https://forum.xda-developers.com/sh.../tweaked-kernel-nvidia-shield-tablet-t3069776
K12-002 works fine and fixed my battery drain during sleep
https://androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=282989
I dont use screen mirroring, but i do use HDMI out for use at school and that works fine. Nvidia console is still included in this builds, and I'm glad its standard.
Now I've noticed Kernel Aduitor is no longer available in the appstore, and is over 2 years old. Is there a better kernel auditor app for changing the governors? My tablet is a e-book reader currently, I could happily downclock it to get more out of the battery.
I hope you find your solution. I wouldnt expect too much more development for this (in before lineageos16.0 becomes the bees knees for this device).

Ok sounds for me the Games running out of memory and the ROM cant handle it. You could try to change the Low Memory Killer Settings. For this you need Root Access and with the Kernel Manager App from the PlayStore you can easily change those Settings it even have some Presets as shown on the Screenshots.
It also have Settings like KMS which reduce the Memory Usage too and you can set the Read Ahead Buffer Size.
I think it may need some tinkering with those settings to find the perfect ones.

I agree with Scavenger87, I've also tested Saint2k 14.1 & 15.1, AEX 5.8 & 6.7. By far the most usable is Saint2k 14.1 the second time I've loaded it up (so far).
AEX 5.8 has outstanding deep sleep battery life but the random reboots to the OS or TWRP in the middle of doing something eventually had me loading up Saint2k 14.1, which was stable but ate battery at idle despite running the BitOb K12-002 kernel.
So I tried Saint2k 15.1 but had a lot of problems launching apps and also RR, then wiped & flashed AEX 6.7 which seemed to have even more problems with app launching. Both were quite laggy compared to LOS14.1 and AEX5.8 when the apps finally started to run.
Today I reflashed Saint2k 14.1 with BitOb K12-002 kernel and so far the device feels like is should - clean and snappy. It just finished being fully charged so I'll get an idea of sleep battery consumption over the next few days.

I would like to make an installation as clean as possible of 14.1.
What do I have to clean when I reinstall the rom from twrp?
And if I have to do a separate installation to make it work better, when should I do it? Thank you
For a complete wipe down you should go to TWRP -> WIPE -> Advanced Wipe and Wipe Everything apart of the Micro SD card for obvious reasons
Then install the newest build of the 14.1 by The-Saint2k which you can found here : https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=8889791610682953905
The Filename says its from the 6 October 2020 which wasnt revealed by The-Saint2k in the Forum and i wasnt able to test it out myself but i never had any new Problems with his ROMs.
I dont get the second question what do you mean with seperate installation ?

Some zip file that improves performance, or the operation of the tablet or rom.
Ok i don't have any expirience with such improvement files but i guess as early as possible maybe like the gapps direct after the rom.
Which files are you mean ? And did you try to test the Games without those packs ?
I mean because you facing instability issues..

My installation was only of the rom and gapps.
But there are times that they recommend you install some more package from twrp to improve the functioning of the tablet. As for example the one from aex 5.8 there is one to use fast loading (or so I understood).

[Firefly] [ROCKCHIP] [ITX-3588J] "This device is not Google Play Protect certified"

I want to say that thanks to the help from @Nikhil I finally got the Google Play app set installed on my Firefly ITX-3588J ROCKCHIP RK3588 board's Android 12 stock image install. Except now there's one last little problem that's a bit different than everything I'd been having before here, and that's that it says:
This device isn't Play Protect certified.
Your device isn't certified to run Google apps or use Google services. Contact the device manufacturer or retailer and ask for a certified device.

And I can't use the Google Play Store to download the apps that I need that were the whole reason for putting it on in the first place (to get Chrome, ZOOM, and Linux Deploy especially).
What can be done about this? From what I gather, Google maintains a list of "blessed" devices and obviously this board (very new, not from a typical manufacturer, not your typical Android device i.e. a phone or tablet) is not there. Is there any way around this? I saw something about registering it in your Google Developer account (which I have one of), I tried that some time ago when I had a less than working Google Play installation (before the recent one which looks to be "100% proper", that one was crashing in weird ways in addition to giving this error), but it seems not to have taken and/or be remembered. The device is connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi but that's about it.
Is there any fix? I seem to be soooooo close now to finally having coaxed a usable system out of this board!

Yeah. It's not on the list of certified devices - which is hardly surprising to me given what it is.
ADD: I decided to try registering as a custom ROM.
ADD 2: I finished the custom ROM registration. The device is no longer giving pop up notifications that it is "not Play Protect certified", but Google Play still goes to - and now goes immediately (no log in prompt) to - its "This device is not Play Protect certified" error screen. What's going on?
ADD 3: I managed to get it to work. The trick was to go to System > Apps and clear cache and user data for both Google Play and Google Play services. That reset everything and now it goes! Thanks for your help.
I am thinking of purchasing one. Where are you at with yours @Shimmy99 ?
Have you been able to download everything you wanted? Are you using a touchscreen?
Thanks ahead of time.

Works great as an Android 12 machine. Ubuntu is proving much less trivial to get working, however, chiefly due to graphics support issues (also not gotten GRUB to work yet, either) - I even installed a GPU card, but it is not fully working because it appears something is funny with the driver code and the way Rockchip's PCI Express controller work together and it looks like a real kernel development problem (kinda reminiscent of issues with the Raspberry Pi and GPUs, but different ones). The real trick to getting a smooth GApps installation was to pack a custom ROM with a suitably loaded "product" partition/directory with the apps from a package like NikGApps. Can/will provide more details later/if you want them. No, I use keyboard and mouse. Android, though, is kinda quirky with them.
Thanks for the detailed response. I am thinking of getting the Firefly variant with 4GB/32GB. You mentioned you were trying to add a GPU? It seems the main reason for getting this is due to the Mali GPU. What I am trying to do is create a system with enough "kick" to compete with the Steamdeck but with a 10" screen. Frankly, I just wanted something a little better than my current solution based on a 2019 Shield TV (Tube) but with twice the performance. The Shield TV has been a fun project since I doing a lot of SMD soldering and working in small spaces. I plan to talk about it more on my YouTube channel 'All THings 3D' in a week or two. At $400 for a 10" variant (full BOM) using the Firefly makes it a hard sell for anyone except the tinkerer. If I stick with the Shield TV, it competes niceley with the new Logitech 7" cloud game pad.
Anyway I will message you since I have another project I am working on that may interest you.

You trying to make a handheld with this? This board, I don't think, is compact/cool (as in temperature - it has a fan!) enough for that purpose. It's really more like a mini desktop computer board, or at best a laptop - it'd be an awfully thick "handheld" to accommodate the ventilation... Yes, you're right about the Mali GPU - no Ubuntu support (but OK with Android 12). There are other and smaller RK3588 boards, but the heat dissipation of this processor looks, given the presence of a fan, to likely be a liability for handheld use I'd think.

I received the Orange Pi 5 yesterday and was able to get very good 3DMark (4454) rating with small heatsink on top of the RK-3588 without a fan. My case already has a couple low profile 40mm fans in the back of the case for the 10" 1080P screen that currently houses customized Shield TV board. This will work much better and with much better rating. The only problem is no WiFi or BT on the board and I am already using the M.2 slot for a NVME and none of my USB WIFI dongles work which means I will have to find a Android 12 build that someone has already included the drivers for USB device, or do it myself. Or, maybe Orange Pi themselves have USB driver built in that haven't disclosed which one yet. In any case $84 for the board with 8GB which is less than half of the price of any other RK3588 boards out there.
More to come...
