[Q] HD playback with no lag...?

Im trying to watch either .mp4 or .mkv but both lag in stock player and moboplayer. Anybody get this to work with zero lag?

What are the specs on the videos that you are trying to play?
Here is a vid of me using Vital Player on the transformer with a H.264 encoded MP4 and an MKV movie. No lag, no sync issues.

If the movies you're trying to watch are encoded with High profile then playback will be laggy no matter what on the TF.

So this handles 1080 but with some tweaks I'm assuming..again, I'm a new at this

For the MKV, I downloaded it was already encoded so I am not sure of its specs, but the playback quality and resolution are excellent even on my desktop's 24" HD monitors.
For the MP4 played at the beginning of the video, that was shot in 1920x1080, brought into Premiere CS5 for editing and exported through Adobe Media Encoder using H.264 at 1280x720.
There are some threads with Handbrake encoding specs on the forums as well.
When using Vital player make sure the Decode Mode settings are set to automatic. It will automatically recognize there is no hardware acceleration (as I understand is normal with the Tegra-2). It will then compensate with "software acceleration". Also in the Video Mode settings I have it set to speed over quality as the performance is better without sacrificing much of the quality to my eye.
With these settings, Vital Player should play just about any video you might download off of a torrent site. I have yet to find a video that does not play well through it. I'm not sure if other users who say it does not work for them have checked the Vital Player settings, if my videos are just not up to the elusive "high profile" they are talking about, or if I just have a rare Transformer that just works, but as you can see in the video it does work for me.

So you had to encode the mkv or mp4 before playback? So it cant just play them straight up?

I believe that nearly any video you get is going to need be encoded in some form at some time.
The MKV was more than likely encoded by someone else before I downloaded, but no further encoding was necessary on my end. The MP4 was shot on my own camera (Canon 7D recording at 1920x1080p) and needed to be edited. When you export directly from the timeline in Premiere, it must be encoded to even be usable. For sites like YouTube or Vimeo to even accept them there must be encoding. The H.264 encoding that I used is the highest setting for that type of video's purpose (HD web playback). It is different than what I would have exported for burning to Blu-Ray but is adequate for a screen the size and resolution of the Transformer's.
When I return home, I will try bringing in the raw, unedited video from the 7D (which is around 3GB for a 4 minute vid at that resolution btw) and see if Vital Player plays it back with no lag. I seriously doubt it as some average computers have a hard time playing that back without lag. Even Final Cut Pro can't import raw 7D video without a conversion (Adobe Premiere does not have this problem though). Why anyone would want to play a video of this size and resolution on a tablet is beyond me (3GB for 4mins is ridiculous in a playback form). I can't even imagine wanting to watch a full length movie in that form.
Both of these videos seriously choke in any player other than Vital Player (including Mobo, QQ, and MVideo). I couldn't play any video in my library with them or the stock player, but all of these files play just fine in Vital.

Maybe that's all I was missing for the other players (I didn't get prompted to download codecs). I'll stick with Vital Player though simply because it's already on my tablet and it works.

Ive tried lots of different players and anything i download from BitTorrent (.mkv which I convert to MP4 for my Xbox) won't play worth a damn on my transformer. They are all720p. They all lag like crazy. Can the transformer not handle this?

90% of all HD videos you download the internet are ripped from blu-ray and likely encoded with high profile h264 because that's what looks best. the tegra 2 cannot handle these files at 720 or 1080p, and thus they need to be re-encoded to main profile, which as i understand it, means a much lower bitrate (and thus worse picture).

I got all excited because of this thread...but I just gave VitalPlayer a shot on a 720p high profile x264 and it still sucks. No artifacts but the framerate is really low it seems.
In case anyone is interested I did receive this message from ASUS:
"On this issue, we have tested some of the 1080p video is playing well. We have cooperation with google and will launch android 3.1 in June to resolve the 720p and 1080p video playback problems."

i believe that is flash only, as in 720/1080 youtube streaming which is much lower quality than a high profile blu-ray rip. the problem is tegra 2, which is a year old, not supporting 720/1080p playback. it's the reason boxee box dropped tegra for an intel chip.

[Q] Laggy when playing video 1080p with VP9 video format

Hi, Recently I've downloaded video 1080p from youtube but when playing it, the video laggy but the audio just playing properly fine...
I thought it because the decoder set to H/W, but when switched to S/W both video & audio become laggy, then try switched to H/W+ it become worse (doesn't support this kind video it says...).
When I see media info of video, it use VP9 format video.

I've tried on 3 devices; Asus Zenfone 6, Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, and LG G2, all of it have the same issues...

Is it something like bugs so the video didn't play properly? Or android can't play video with format VP9 properly?
Because I've tried other video 1080p, it can be played properly.
Oh FYI, I've tried using few other video player, and none of its can play the video as good as MX Player. That's why I've been using MX Player as default video player.
Hope there will be improvement on the next update so the video VP9 1080p can be played properly

All 1080p videos are not same.
It may lag at various parameters like higher frame rate, bitrate, color depth,....etc.
For example if you consider a video 1080p @ 30fps inorder to display 1 sec of videos it needs to decode 30 frames. Where as in 1080p @ 60 fps it requires 60 frames to be decoded. So, It will require the double power. Like wise various encoding parameters matters in video playback.
Second, H/W uses your hardware's native decoder . If the codec is natively supported by your device, H/W decoder will be the best option.
In case of S/W decoder, it supports more video formats since it depends on the ffmpeg. But, decoding will be completely done one CPU. So, it needs very high cpu power. That's why it's more laggy.

VP9 isn't a widely supported format. That's likely why HW and HW+ don't work well with it; most devices don't have VP9 hardware acceleration.
SW rendering of a 1080p video is very demanding. Even on the most powerful devices, since there's no hardware acceleration, expect performance to be sub-par. Currently, devices on the market can only SW render 720p smoothly.
This being said, for SW mode, try Settings > Decoder > use speedup tricks. See if that helps a little bit on SW.
Ultimately, the best option is to reencode the video to something like H264/AVC mp4.

Can you explain more where you're trying to playback the video? VP9 support is built in to Android from KitKat+ and should not have an issue playing back. Additionally, can you try playing back the video on Chrome on Android and see if there are still decode issues?

I see... So the point is the problem because most devices don't have VP9 hardware accelaration yet, especially for 1080p VP9...
Well... I've tried using SW speed up trick, it didn't much help...
Yeah...maybe the best option is to reencode the video to H264...or download 720p version..., cause the 720p VP9 can be played perfectly fine.
Still... I hope the MX Player developer team has plan to improve playback for 1080p VP9 video

As I said before, I'm trying to play 1080p VP9 video (that I've downloaded from youtube using IDM on computer) on my Asus Zenfone 6, Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1, & LG G2 using MX Player.
But when I playing it, the video is laggy on all devices...
Surely you can streaming it using youtube app & chrome android and it plays well till the end cause the available quality option in those apps is up to 720p (the 1080p quality option is hidden on those apps so I can't select it to test if it plays well or not).

That would be something you would have to ask the ffmpeg team to do, since MX uses their codecs. Unless the MX dev has a magic trick up his sleeve, I don't think there's much else MX can do to further improve SW playback performance for a video that exceeds the CPU's capabilities...
Likewise, on a hardware acceleration, it's limited by the hardwaree put in place by the manufacturer... so this aspect would need a new device.

Read the second post. Video encoding parameters matters.
If you can't play in H/W or H/W+ decoder, Don't expect the smooth playback on S/W. It fully depends on CPU. If is laggy then your processor is not powerful enough. Sometime enabling the speed up tricks may reduce the lagging.
One more thing, using CPU will drain your battery faster than H/W. When CPU runs it's maximum speed for long time it will emit more heat which may lead to issues.

The chance of that happening, I can't see to be high. The MPEG consortium probably pays a lot to lobby chipset makers to only support MPEG formats, such as H.264 and H.265.

Lolno, it's just that industry is not interested in VP9. Even if they don't have to pay royalties they still have to develop asics (and h/w engineers are saying that it's not h/w friendly) and include them into the chip. It still costs a lot.
And what is the point of supporting vp9? It's an ugly google toy that they're ready to abandon (say hello to vp10 in 2015).

Ah yes, ASICs. I don't think manufacturers would be very happy at making more dies for new ICs. They already aren't happy with being forced to support Hi10p in H.265.

becayse you can't play vp9 if you download youtube videos with IDM (internet download manager)
because it is bull**** and its newer versions used idmmkvlib.01 codec.so when downloadimg it not only download andit convert into ist bull**** special format.so won't play withx pr others.try another downloader or manual download yt videos i recomend.

4K Video Playback with HEVC - 10bit

I have a few questions regarding 4K videos. I tried playing a 4K H265 10bit video on the phone using the native Sony Video app and, although it did play, it was slow as heck. Does the phone support such videos natively (i.e. Hardware Accelarated playback)? Is it an issue of the app itself? Since almost all 4k content, with or with HDR/10bit, is in H265 are we limited to Youtube and Amazon for 4K playback? Do I have to transcode all my 4K Blu-Ray movies to H264 in order to play them? Are there any third party players (e.g. bsplayer) that can play 4k videos (and utilize the phone's 4k resolution, not just play them in 1080p). Thank you all for your time.

I downloaded a 4k test sample encoded in x265 and played it with MX player app with hardware acceleration.
Worked perfectly. Smooth as butter.

Thanks a lot for your time. It seems that mx player does not use the phone's native 4K resolution though and displays a 1920x1080 image so there is no point in using it. My question is whether a video player app exists, besides Sony's native one, that is able to use the phone's 4K resolution, not just play 4K videos.

Tried with Sony Xperia Video app and the 4K sample I downloaded runs the same as it runs in MX Player.

Kot5nik, in my opinion, changing the resolution that android runs is not the proper way to go. Since XZ Premium is a device that supports 4k/HDR i shouldn't have to resort to "adb" to watch a 4k video in another app. Plus, by doing that, battery drain increases a bit, phone dialer app does not work, app switching does not show thumbnails etc.

FartyParty, I stand corrected. You are absolutely right. I took screenshots of both MX and Sony apps and the look identical. Only one difference though. It seems that MX Player doest not utilize HDR. There is a noticeable difference in contrast. You can see the attachments if you want to.

Here is what i found from testing the device for 4K HDR videos
the device can and will play 4K H265 10bit and even HDR videos but there are things that need to be done to play perfectly
first you need to check for the containers to be mkv or mp4
second using sony app will not allow to play surround sound file like dts, ac3, AAC 5.1 or AAC 7.1
third which i think is very odd and stupid from sony is that how such a powerful device can't play mkv with AAC sound track no matter what stereo or surround.
The trick for this to use software where they can switch container without the need for converting the whole file from mkv to mp4.

I have to also agree with @Liltman and say that the MX Player does play video content in 4k however there is a very noticeable difference between the stock Sony album player and the MX player.
Sadly the Sony video player doesn't support truehd aac files so the video will play flawlessly without the sound :crying:
The MX Player on the other hand WILL play the sound but the quality of the video seems to take a small hit as it's not as vibrant as the Sony album player. This is because MX Player supports 4k but not HDR
I hope that Sony added codecs to make TrueHD sound files compatible with the Sony gallery player on Oreo but I am not very confident about that.
I would appreciate it if someone can find a way around this annoying issue. What software is @HYPER-RX referring to?

Try VLC guys. When I played an HDR video in VLC it tried to force my brightness to max like YouTube does. However, it had to ask for som system write permission to do it and it didnt work completely. See if VLC does a better job though I found it to be pretty good.

MX Player definitely does support HDR. You can tell because in HDR videos, if you try taking a screenshot, the screenshot will simply come out as black, whereas in SDR videos, you'll get a normal screenshot.

Hi I just tried VLC and you was spot on. I can see that it actually does support HDR however I'm still having audio issues with the sound. Especially the HEVC Atmos 7.1. Do I need to download a codec pack or something?
It's a shame because the video quality is incredible!

I tried to play 4k hdr 60fps video using the sony video app. I had no issues with playing it. It was smooth no lags at all.
codec was hevc and bitrate was 75Mbps and audio was AAC.

H265 Playback

so i recently purchased a Xperia XZ premium. I was really exited since i already have a massive library of 4K movies , and i get to watch them on the go. But sadly i found out the default Video player does not support H265 codec and i had no choice but to use VLC & MX player. so my problem is do i get the same level of HDR play back performance and up-scaling level with VB frame rate sync with these 3rd party players? because iv heard that the default video app has all of those options that i have pointed out.

Sadly the phone is only allowing us to run 4K files at H264 codec using the OEM app

That is not true. You can play h265 hevc movies with the album app. Also mkv files.

im not saying it cant.. but it lags like crazy.. ( stutters every frame. heck it even skip frames) fyi im on oreo ( 47.1.A.12.145)

No, it don't lags! You should check the thread download from Oreo to Nougat the back to oreo... It seems it is a problem with partition fragmentation... Or google play services... You can try to become beta for google play services, if not helps just downgrade to Nougat then update again to oreo

Heck... so you are saying i can run 2160p 10 bit h265 HDR mkv files without a lag on default video player and the lag im getting is due to a software fragmentation? bruhhh.... sony why you do this.

Nope it is not software dependent, actually it is the way the file encoded causes the problem. Try to shoot a video with 4K HEVC from your camera, you can play it without lag.
As far as I know it doesn't lags in 8bit, and unless you have OLED display (XZP has IPS) you can't really tell the difference. -- No you can tell the difference but sadly this doesn't change the situation.
MX Player is the greatest one in terms of playback, but VLC is Ad-Free and open source.

First, to answer the question, it plays 4K very smooth, no delay even in action scenes (tested on some YT movie trailers).
If I got a 4k video file, not the display resolution matters, but the ability to play it without wasting a lot of time to recode the file to a lower resolution. For instance, you can't play 1080p on some laptops older than 2008. On streaming services like YT you can receive a lower resolution, but there are cases where you receive a FTP (or attachment, or cloud drive) transferred video file.
I revived this old thread because I wanted to know faster than it took me to find out on YT, did a fast google search and this forum was the first result, so I also made an account.
