I know.. I know... No OTAs with root... It was a security update so I didnt think much about it until it actually hit me...
It was truly a mistake. I just got back into android after a few years hiatus.
Is there a way to go back without losing anything? Any kind of help would be appreciated!

You need to be 100% completely stock to an OTA... Stock recovery, stock kernel, stock system partition... How you get there is up to you.

Really? Restore your pre-root backup with TWRP or flash the stock images from the General Discussion section.
Remember that we do not have images for the latest security patches on some models yet, if you go back to stock, take an OTA, and root, ROM, or do something nasty to your device, there may be NO WAY to recover until, or even if, newer factory firmware images become available.
These updates are just security updates, they are not bug fixes in any way (at least from what has been shown), so there is no real world benefit to applying them if you don't need too. Security updates are mostly just feel good propaganda anyway.

A security update has no correlation to a Nougat update, we are not getting it, even if we were it would have zero correlation to it... Except you would like need to have it to take the next OTA.
As far as being useless, no it isn't... it does contain some security update, which although they are not really important shouldn't be ignored without a reason, and being rooted/modified MAY be significant enough reason but that is your call. I would read the release notes, if it is just security updates it's probably worth skipping for now, if it is bug fixes or other updates then it is probably worth it to take but use caution modifying your system because you cannot flash a firmware that is older successfully and we don't have the "new" firmware versions yet.

I unfroze all the apps I had frozen and tried the OTA and it still failed.
I am rooted with just the stock ROM.
Anything I am missing here?
I do not think OTA updates with the carrier is possible on a rooted phone. I know mine would not do OTA updates when it was stock, unlocked, and rooted. It would always fail.
No OTA updates will work on a rooted phone. If it somehow does work it will likely break your root privileges
ok that makes sense.
So did you just not do the update and how do I make it stop trying to update.
I might start running custom roms again. I have not done that in a long time.

You can do a OTA with root but you will just lose it. If you altered some system files it will fail or if you run a custom recovery it will fail.
I've had similar issues, on other devices, with ota updates not working because of root, and more specifically I believe, cwm recovery. Unfortunately I've had to use kies to update.

There was no option to update. Verizon pushed the update to my phone twice in the middle of the night without my knowledge or permission. In the mornings I would see the message that the update failed. I didn't want it anyway, and dislike the bloat, so I flashed to a custom ROM after their second attempt. No more OTA updates for me now. That's what happened with me anyway.
Yea I agree... I did not really need the OTA and I plan on installing CleanROM 5.6 tmr.
I just froze all that bloat back. I can't stand all that S***T running in the back ground.

So im a noob. I rooted my gs3 when i got it. I added the wifi button and mobile hotspot. Now i want to update my phone to the newest build. I froze kies and SDM to prevent any OTA updates so I wouldnt mess anything up or lose root.
Does skipping builds cause any issues?
Can I update in a way where I wont lose my info?
If that is not possible (saving info) How do I update without losing root? (can you point me to a video)?
Since there is no stock image for mb1 yet, you'll have to go to the lk3 build first. You can do so by flashing the stock lk3 image with Odin (you can find the files in development). From there you can take the ota. There may be images that allow you to keep root while going from LG1 to lk 3 but I'm not sure
If you already have root then I believe all you have to do is flash a 4.1.2 rom via custom recovery...I may be wrong though so double check the guides over in the gs3 development stickies.

He could do that but it would only update the system and data partitions. The other partitions and firmware will still be out of date and that could cause some potential problems, especially if its a jump from ICS to JB
What do you mean like radio, rpm and kernel?
Yes and any others. There are I think 12 or so partitions total, but I'm not smart enough to know what they do (except for the three or four that get backed up with a nandroid such as system and data)
Edit: better link showing a table of the 23 sg3 partitions and labeling their functions.

I recently flashed my HTC One M8 with [ROM][4/13/14] GPE for M8VZW. Curently the rom is a little laggy and the camera is really slow. How will I be able to update the rom? Will it update OTA? Any idea when the lag issues will be fixed?
Thanks

It's all on the ROM developers... I would suggest you post this question in that ROM's thread for best response. Custom ROMs will not update "OTA" since you have a custom recovery on your phone. You will have to rely on the Devs to provide new ROM versions with the OTA updates "embedded" in them. (Though, I think if there is a Firmware update, you can manually apply it once someone posts a process for doing so on S-Off/Unlocked M8's)

I would post but cant since I just created an account. When flashing an update to the rom will it reset all my settings so I have to go through the setup process again?

you should not have to if youre just flashing a newer version over the same ROM but just an older version, UNLESS the dev says to wipe, in which case you will have to go through setup all over again.

Ideally, it's always better to do a clean install when you flash any ROM, just to prevent any possible issues from coming up. However, it's not always necessary when you're just flashing an update to a ROM you're already running. Though if the update includes a new version of Android, it's usually highly recommended to do a clean install. And if you're running one ROM and decide to switch to another, a clean install is recommended again, if not absolutely necessary.
I would recommend checking out Titanium Backup or Helium. They're both app backup solutions (if you decide you want to start checking out different ROM's more often, you'll be very happy you have this) that will let you restore your apps and app settings after a clean flash/wipe.

As Abe and sfreemanoh have already stated, that too is up to the Developer. If you are changing ROMs (Example: Have Stock ROM that's S-Off/Rooted and decide to flash ViperOneM8), you really need to Factory Reset your phone. Titanium, Helium, or MyBackup are three ways to save your Application/System data before your wipe.
If you are merely updating your current ROM version (Example: ViperOneM8 v1.0 to v1.5), the Developer should always post what needs to happen. In many cases, if there are just minor updates, the Devs will say it's OK to "Dirty Flash" without a wipe. Sometimes Devs always tell you to wipe and do a clean install. (ViperOne actually has "OTA" update files, which is basically a smaller update file that you can dirty flash.)
Thanks guys for the answers.
Just wondering if I'll be able to take an OTA update from 6.0 to 6.0.1 whenever it is available? I received a message saying a software update was available and when I told it to install it, it rebooted into TWRP, checked the current software for about 3 minutes, then rebooted? Upon looking, I am still on 6.0? I had the system check to see if there was still an update available, but it said there was nothing. Maybe it was just a radio update? I am anxiously awaiting the update so that I may install Xposed. Any input would be greatly appreciated :good:

You can't take OTAs with rooted phones and twrp. The OTA looks at the system partition and if anything is changed...it will not install.
You have to either take a backup somebody made with the OTA/stock basically. Flash it via TWRP. Or RUU back to the lastest for your phone. Then, take all OTA updates, then TWRP, Format Data, then SuperSU again, reboot...start/restore phone.
There is no easy way without Dev support/Custom Roms to get latest bases/OTAs right now without wiping/starting over somehow.
This is why having devs creating Roms is really a luxury. Because they already have the proven installer/Rom customized. They will then take OTAs/new bases, roll that into their Rom, and you just do an update/flash, like Viper, and not lose anything, and no need to wipe.
Likely never to happen with this phone since Devs really only work on the Mainline/Flagship M models, like M8/M9/M10 etc...
So the wave of the Oct. Security Update for the H918 is out. This new version is completely safe to update since this is still ARB 1 (See attached pictures).
Is it strictly security, or are there any UI/UX bugfix or additions?

If you accept, the phone will go into a bootloop since the stock recovery has been replaced by twrp. So don't accept the update. Reflashing the ROM would stop the bootloops if you just so happen to accept it.

To me I believe its just strictly security tbh since I haven't noticed anything else. I will see if performance has been improved or not

Actually I did accept it when I first saw the notification then when I realized I was rooted (about 4 years without root) the phone booted in to TWRP and I freaked out ... so I moved the slider to see TWRP was asking to enter some sort of password or key for it to continue. but then I saw the cancel button and I cancened and it took me back to the main TWRP screen where I just rebooted the system without issues.
The only reason I rooted was because OREO battery life was 10 % per hour weather I touched or did not touch the phone. I thought this security patch might have battery optimizations.
But thanks for your replay, I'm going to stay away from this system update since I'm rooted not. I guess I got luck and not bricking my phone.
