how to update to latest fw without losing data - Xperia Z5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello!
Can someone tell me how to update my firmware to the latest?
I have rooted my device and i would like to keep my data and settings, just update the firmware.
Is it possible without losing ANYTHING?
I am on MM firmware number 32.2.A.0.224 . Which is the latest?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Flash the latest 32.2.A.5.11 without wiping and you wont lose any data, but you will have to root again, just install stock patched kernel and flash latest supersu through twrp(included with kernel). Cheers

thanks for your reply!
I have found this guide Installing Xperia Marshmallow using Flashtool and XperiFirm [TUTORIAL], do you think that it's OK to follow it or there are some missing parts?
edit: after the new fw is downloaded nothing happens. I close xperifirm, but the flashtool won't go on with the creation of the ftf. Also I would like to ask about some ta partitions that i got backed up and i think i have to do something with them during the flashing. I have done the procedure back in the spring but i can't remember clearly
The root is the least important.
My main concern is not to lose data and settings! I hope that unchecking "Wipe data" and "Wipe SSD" will work!
I would wait for the nougat update but the bluetooth is not working with my new car stereo and it's driving me crazy!

i will send you link to .ftf

thanks for the link, but I am now using the Customised GR ROM (1298-7321) and I would like to stay on it just to avoid any compatibility issues or any other problems.
I will download again and will try to make the ftf myself.
If you have a guide or something feel free to post it.

I sent you customised GR rom, and you won't face any incompactibility , just flash it

Folder says "32.2.A.5.11 Customized Germany"
and the filename says 1298-3675 which is definitely not Greek.
I have managed to create the ftf, I restarted the process and it went through, don't know why it stuck in the first place.
now backing up with titanium and twrp.
any more help would be appreciated.

please don't say BS if you are not sure that it is true. i once flashed stock rom on custom rom without wiping and it worked without issues, only i lost root, so don't post on xda if you know everything

just to clarify, I never said that I know everything, about flashing something different I quote myself ".. just to avoid any compatibility issues or any other problems."
It's better and probably safer to flash the same fw region, although a fw from another region may work.
Anyway, thank you for your help so far, I have managed to complete the update procedure without any hiccups.

Galaxy S 4 - Random reboots after many ROM flashings

Hi everyone,
I'm a newbie here, but I've read the guidelines, don't hate
I got an international version SGS4 (i9505) and it got instantly rooted the day I purchased it.
The first rom I flashed was a i9505 Google Edition Rom... Everything worked fine but I didn't like it so much.
So I cleaned everything and I installed Foxhound (2.0)... and the problems started: maybe it's just because the two ROMs use different kernels, but my device started reboot randomly!
So I flashed a kernel cleaner (the Kernel Cleaning_Script by jivy26), I cleaned the cache and all the data... Then I installed the latest stable version of CyanogenMod (with Android 4.2.2)
Nothing.
My SGS4 continously reboots and sometimes it's difficult to restart it. I'm so sad, I just bought this phone and it works so bad.
Maybe I should install a Stock Rom and unroot my device?
Any advices/cleaning methods to stop these random crashes?
Please respond
Dem
I would flash full stock via odin and use it for few days.

So I should unroot too?
What's the main difference between a normal flash and a full stock flash via odin?
Please respond, I really don't know what to do and I think this is the only place where I can ask for help

Try a factory wipe first, if the reboots keep happening, I would do a fresh, clean flash of the stock tar. What I usually do is I format data through TWRP, it will say I lost root and if I want to retain it, I answer no. I reboot into download mode and flash stock tar through Odin. Then I root with CF-Auto-Root, and finally flash a custom recovery.

Thank you so much... then I decided to install an Official test leaked firmware 4.3 (I9505XXUEMJ3) via Odin.
Everything works fine, but (although the system's more responsive and stable) I had another random reboot God why?
Maybe it's just a problem with kernel... I installed 3-4 Roms, and maybe my phone is not clean... but I flashed via Odin, I erased everything (cache, format/data/factory). It's so strange...
I feel like I have to throw away my phone... please help!
EDIT: my phone crashed and it is bootlooping now.
My phone is now officially bricked. After I flashed the latest official Samsung Rom my phone started bootlooping and crashing at the Samsung logo. The only thing I can do now is to use the recovery, but even if I format/data factory nothing changed.
Any possible solutions?
My patience is collapsing with this phone T_T
So let me get this straight...you had an instability issue (reboots) and after all the help from the guys here suggesting to flash a stable stock rom, you decided to go ahead and flash a leaked firmware?
Find the latest OFFICIAL STOCK 4.2.2 rom and try again. Don't even root, just check with a stable rom so you can see if your issue is hardware related.
Try downloading and flashing one of the sammobile firmwares.

Why on earth are trying something you don't know about. If you don't follow the guides here on xda it will not work. You have to install custom Recovery's in order to clean and erase your whole phone. If you don't it will keep on DIRTY FLASHING and acting up or rebooting or what ever. Stock recovery is basically useless for what Your trying to do.

I must admit I failed so bad :\ Should I re-root to install a custom recovery? And then? How do I clean my phone? T_T I had a custom recovery, but I just format all datas/factory and cache. Is there anything else I can do with a custom recovery (considering that I don't have backups on my phone).

Which stock 4.2.2 rom did you try?
When you installed 4.3 stock rom, you probably also installed the new knox bootloader, so in order to go back to 4.2.2 you must install a stock rom like XXUDMH8 or XXUDMI1 that have the new bootloader.
Download one of them from here http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/1/?model=GT-I9505&pcode=0
and then follow the instruction from this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2265477

Thank you so much I'm here to learn. So:
1) I should install a stock rom (such as XXUDMH8 or XXUDMI1) with the new bootloader
2) Then I should root using this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2413014
3) Then I should install a custom recovery and... ?
Tell me if the steps are correct or I'm failing again lol

Yeah that's basically it. After you have custom Recovery installed do a complete wipe of everything twice just to make sure. Then go ahead and install stock with Odin and your random boots should be gone.

Keep in mind that with so many flashes, if you already have the new bootloader, you may have triggered the Knox efuse and voided your warranty.
You can check that in download mode, if knox warranty is 0x0 you are fine. If it is 0x1 you have triggered it.
You can look for more info in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2447832

How to root without voiding the phone warranty?
Try to install with this kernel "GT-I9505_AdamKernel.V1.6.KnoxFree2.CWM". You may search it in this xda forum.
Hopefully this will helping you.

[Q][Solved] NE5 Update with Philz Recovery and SuperSU? (Not Towelroot)

So I saw here that the NE5 update was out, and I want to install it. However, obviously I can't do an OTA update due to it being a "modified device." I am running Philz Recovery and root from flashing SuperSU.zip.
Is there any way to update manually, without losing root (permanently), recovery, or wiping all my data? I know that I could always restore the stock recovery and firmware via ODIN, but that would get rid of everything, including my data.
(Side question: What exactly does the NE5 update add? I know it's another build of 4.4.2 but what features?)
Thanks.
SOLVED: Just went the long route with wiping and installing the updated NE5 firmware via ODIN. Flashed Philz recovery and SuperSU.
Admins/Mods feel free to delete.

The NE5 file is already deodexed and rooted. Therefore, you don't lose root. You get Wi-Fi calling feature with this updated. And, I believe it's an update to the modem.

Remember: You will lose all data. So it's better if you do a backup of your data using Titanium or alike to get the data back.

About Root in 05Q

Hello guys!!!, Today I get the new OTA with the firmware 05Q and I install it. I see in the forum a version of 05Q rooted LINK HERE
I only want to ask if anyone know another way of get root actually or if I should wait until our amazing toolkits for 1+1 get updated.
Thanks i nadvance!!! :cyclops:
You can gain root following, This thread. If you already have a custom recovery install, might be easier to install the pre-rooted 05QA. I went the second route.
P.S. That toolkit will root 05QA, just does not have the new firmware to go back to stock.
I have a custom recovery installed ofc, if I install the pre-rooted 05Q I lost all my data and apps? Should I do a factory reset? Thanks for your fast answer mate!!

You said that flashing entire ROM would be easier, it isn't. All that's need to get root is to flash the SuperSU zip. He's already on 05Q so flashing the ROM zip is completely and utterly pointless. It's like telling someone who's run out of petrol to install a entirely new petrol tank that's full of petrol (when all that's actually needed is the fuel).
It doesn't matter what someone thinks might be the solution, if you're going to answer in the q&a section you need to give the best and easiest solution.
The thing is flashing update-supersu is not working... for me at least. I updated OTA.. After installation finished, rebooted to TWRP and tried to install update-supersuv2.37.zip...
It doesn't show any error, but when I reboot my phone there is no supersu installed ( actually there is one but it's greyed out with android icon and not showing up on application list )

Can i go back to cm11s this way?

Hi! My question is lame, i know.. But here it goes anyway, i couldn't find a simple and direct answer..
Is less than a week that i have this phone, and i've been reading a lot of guides of how to rollback to cm11s.. the thing is i've flashed the latest CM12S signed zip ota through CM Recovery, everything is fine as i'm testing it right now..
My question is: if i want to go back to CM11S (in the case that i don't like CM12S or have some bugs), can i just wipe data / factory reset and cache in CM Recovery, and then flash the cm11s signed zip?
I haven't rooted or unlocked bootloader, is it relatively easy from what i read around here.. but i wondered if i had to go through all those steps (unlock bootloader, custom recovery, and then flash) or just doing the steps mentioned before will work just fine..
Is it better to fastboot flash or through custom recovery is fine also?
Thanks in advance!
PD: I'm also asking what do you think about some other 5.1.1 Lollipop ROM, custom kernel, etc.. I'm kind of a flashaholic and i would be able to install the custom recovery if would be really worth it
PD2: sorry for the bad english, i'm from argentina

Just unlock your bootloader now, the longer you leave it the more difficult it'll be to backup your internal storage beforehand. You should really have it unlocked anyway as insurance against anything going wrong with your phone. Once you have unlocked it you can flash TWRP recovery, then the correct procedure to go back to CM11S would be to perform a full wipe (system, data, cache, dalvik cache) and then just flash the zip. As far as custom ROMs for this device go, there are many excellent options to choose from that offer extra customisation that you won't find on the stock ROM.
Don't we have to flash the firmware prior to flashing back to CM11s to prevent a hardbrick? I'm looking into doing this as well, so I'm just asking for my own clarity.

Once you've flashed the ROM, please do share your results. I am still unsure if reverting from a Lollipop ROM to CM11S will cause issues with the radio and/or a softbrick of the device, as I've read that this "can" happen.

Reverting from Lollipop to KitKat won't brick your device, whoever said that is wrong, and would have caused a brick because they didn't know what they were doing. You do need to make sure you flash a KitKat modem though, otherwise you'll have issues with the prox sensor.

Yes. Root is nonconsequential. You really just need twrp.
Can i just flash it over TruPureX Android 6?
(I guess i can, just want to be sure)
Where can I find Android 7 modem to flash separately?
Will it work with Android 6 modem?

No Nougat modem is available until the flashable (non OTA) full stock 7.0 rom is made available from Motorola. This is not likely to happen. No issues have been mentioned running this update on a 6.0 modem. Not sure what the advantages are honestly. I never had problems with bt, wifi, or calls with the 6.0 modem firmware.
Create a backup beforehand and you can always go back to it.

Hi talk about u experience
Greetings, it counts as you did, I have android 6.0 mphs24.49-18-16 and I can not update. Phone with bootloader unlocked and with twrp, no root
I get "invalid ZIP file format" using TWRP 3.1.1-0 on an XT1575. Was running lineageOS 14.1 but I wiped system and data before trying to install the zip. On my laptop I can open the ZIP fine and extract the files, but that doesn't help.

See this thread :

The OP will need to comment - he may be coming from a rooted stock ; at least according the the thread noted above - if you have installed a custom ROM ; there are other steps besides just trying to flash this
I have NOT tried the OP's method or the referenced thread - so I cannot really speak from experience ; just pointing out other resources that have additional information -
Will this work with XT1572? Just confirming.
This is not a traditional TWRP zip file. It is a backup file. You need to unzip it and put it in the backup directory. You then restore backup, choose the nph25-200-22. . . directory, and away you go!

Ah, sure, OK, that makes sense, just wish that had been explained somewhere. I'll give that a shot tonight, thanks!

Success? Some people have reported bootloops due to a firmware problem. I'd like to know how it went.

Well it worked, sort of. It booted to stock but it wasn't stable and the play store kept crashing, I tried all the usual stuff for that, clear services & play store data, uninstall updates, finally tried a factory reset and now I'm stuck in TWRP bootloop, even if I reinstall this image.
So very much YMMV.

Thankfully the 7.0 stock firmware is available now. I wiped and clean flashed it and it works perfectly.
