Adoptable storage on Nougat - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

I'm running Nougat (got into the Samsung beta) and I went to enable adoptable storage from the ADB shell, the commands are accepted but nothing happens
$ adb shell
heroqltespr:/ $ sm list-disks
disk:179,0
heroqltespr:/ $ sm partition disk:179,0 private
heroqltespr:/ $
I hope Samsung didn't kill adoptable storage from the CLI too

The problem is adoptable storage isn't working, I had it working under Marshmallow and initially it was working under nuogat until I reset my phone, now i am unable to enable adoptable storage.
I enter the commands, they all take however when I go to check the phone storage it continues to treat the SD card as a removable card.

Im still on mm im on pc5 for g930p , and i attemted this within the terminal emulator on the phone its self and came up with broken sd that could be read but not analyzed and mounted so if i do this can again can u supply the process you used since samsung doesnt allow very much ways to utilize the sdcard since its a external storage , id like to have a 200gig internel than the 32gigs

I just ran into this issue tonight. I had a 64 GB card inserted in my phone since the day I bougt it. I am running the Nougat beta as well, and the phone's memory card was accepted as internal storage. I just purchased a 128 GB card, and for whatever reason, the commands aren't working to accept the new card as internal storage. Really hoping Samsung didn't kill the option to use the memory card as adoptable storage.

It does work with the app Root Essentials available at the PlayStore.
Make sure to wait for a couple of minutes after rebooting before unlocking the screen, though. If the SD Card isn't fully mounted and scenned yet, the icons from apps on the adopted storage disappear from the launcher.

For us to use root essentials, the device would have to rooted, correct?

I would recommend actually researching adoptable storage on s7 because you will come to reqlize how useless it actually is

I have and am realizing the limitations of it, and that is why I am on the fence of even trying to get it working again. I finally transferred more than 50 GBs onto it and really don't want to format it again for a feature that isn't completely there.

Has anyone tried to update to nougat with adoptable storage turned on in MM? At least it's still working?

If you have adoptable storage enabled and working, it will remain working with Nougat, or at least that wss my experience with the Nougat beta. If you don't have adoptable storage enabled or disable it then you will not be able to re-enable it in Nougat.

Interesting. To your knowledge, is there a way to get that working on a new card? As I stated in a previous comment, it was working on 64 GB with Nougat beta, but has since stopped working when I inserted my new 128 GB card.

Using the existing commands? No, maybe there is another way to enable adoptable storage in Nougat, if there is I do not know how to do it.
I actually pulled my phone out of the beta, downgraded back to 6.0.1 following the instructions in the beta and then re-enabled adoptable storage, now I'm waiting for Nougat to drop like everybody else.

Bummer I really loved the adoptable storage option, but I lost it once I changed the cards. While on Nougat, my phone did recognize the card as internal, but for whatever reason, as soon as I upgraded it, the phone wouldn't let me migrate the data over. Of hand, is the functions of the adoptable storage saved on the memory card? If so, I wonder if it is possible to do a dump of the files on the card onto a new card.

Can confirm my mixed adoptable storage ist working fine (60gb adoptable / 140gb extsd on a 200gb sd) after upgrading to Nougat.
The UI stuff is still there (migrate data and the overview in storage).

Maybe anyone can try:
sm set-force-adoptable true
before the sm partition step.
Seems this was a required step on other devices. https://www.reddit.com/r/lgg4/comments/3z1bfi/enable_adoptable_storage_on_your_lg_g4_stock_no/

I have exactly the same problem! It seems like the S7 Nougat final Version ignores the commands. Also I don´t find the "Migrate data" Option in the SD card menu

I am using an 128GB SD card as adoptable storage in Galaxy S7 on MM. Did the OTA update yesterday and everything works well.
Adoptable storage is still there. In data storage it lists internal shared storage (32GB), SD card (118GB) and states as device
storage: 62 used out of 150 GB. So now it displays the correct sum.
When I select the security option 'Encrypt SD card' it says, that there is none.

Seems only thing I can do is set to save to ad going thru setting> apps> internet> advanced> save to sd
Granted I am new to android and is my first time using any of this, adb or such but unless I'm missing something. I did see one difference and I do not know if it mans anything but everyone said it would take a minute or two after the sm partition disk:179,0 private but my went straight to next command line as soon as I hit enter. That mean anything. Running 6.0.1 as of right now. S7 edge

[How To] Enable Write to External SD Card

This app was written by Jrummy and states that it's for Kit Kat (he should probably update it as it still works). I've used it on every device I've owned since Kit Kat without a single issue. Just run the app and uninstall it when you're done (or don't but it's pointless after you've ran it). It's making a very simple (and reversible) change.
Root is required!

Does anyone know how to use your SD card as Mass Storage when you connect it to your computer?
Currently, to write to the phone from the computer, you have to use MTP. It's too slow though. I want to be able to access my external SD like a flash drive.
I have to eject my SD card from my phone and use a SD card adapter to connect it to my computer anytime I want to make any changes.
If I could mount SD card as Mass Storage while phone is connected to computer via USB, that would make things a lot easier.

When I connect my Mate 7 to the computer, it gives me the option to mount it as a regular flash drive or as MTP.
So, I think it's possible through a software mod.
All,
I just picked up a new Pure, and already have it rooted, and while I have read/write, I can't get the dates to change to the creations date, instead, it has the copy date. Will I need a custom ROM to fix this bug???
(I use a backup program to put "MY" file on the SD, and it tries to use the date to see if there's a change, but can't because it can't change the date. I use to be able to do this with rooted devices.)
Def not working on mm

There is no fix for Marshmallow other than using SD card as external storage?
I have my SD Card set up as portable on my 6.0 Pure, and BitTorrent Sync has issues writing to it. It works perfectly fine on my internal device storage, but starts encountering complete screwups on the SD Card. It did work when I had the SD Card formatted as adoptable, internal storage though.

Yep Xposed runs on this ROM, it's a great one. For those here for the original thread, I contacted support and sent them my logs and they were able to solve the problem in the next app update.
I'm getting about 5h SOT with moderate-heavy usage after 24h off the charger and a lot of music (Viper too) playing with the screen off. I have a solid amount of wakelocks disabled too, so that adds to it. Still think I should be able to push out some more.

Z3 Marshmallow Beta - Adoptable Storage Disabled by Sony?

Please, someone help me understand if it is true or not.
For those who is trying beta Marshmallow (not concept), is that true that Adoptable Storage (Internal Storage) was disabled by Sony?

For me it is disabled. I have not been able to activate it either using ADB commands...

There is no adoptable storage for the z3 on marshmallow. Sony in there wisdom have decided we don't need it. However, the current android n preview does have adoptable storage al be it a little buggy.

T-Mobile LG G5 SD Card (adoptive storage or regular SD) how to make it default

In the past on my Android phones, primarily LG, I have had SD cards installed and they became the default storage location for download, DCIM, images saved from any program, etc. Now I have the G5 and it seems to be quite different. I have an SD card installed and it seems there is no way to make it the default location as it has been in the past. I understand that adoptive storage can be made to work to use the SD card for more 'internal' RAM but I have had two issues with this, 1. I can't see the phone with ADB when connected to my PC and 2. I can't seem to find adoptive storage instructions that work. I am not new to LG or Android phone but this one has me a bit confused. Can adoptive storage be used on the T-Mobile G5 and/or can the SD card be made the default location for the G5 to store things, like DCIM, downloads, etc like all the LG phones in the past?
Thanks,
T.E
I was able to get adoptable storage going, discovered there's a typo in Paul O'Brien's article, once I fixed that I was set to jet. This is an edit from Paul's article here:

1. BACK UP THE DATA YOU HAVE ON YOUR MICROSD CARD. Your card will be formatted by this process, so make sure you have saved any pictures, videos etc. from your card to your PC before you start.
2. Decide how you want to split your card. You can either commit 100% of the card to internal storage, or split between internal storage and conventional SD. This option is useful if you like to unplug your card and put it in your PC. I would probably recommend committing the whole card.
3. Umount the sdcard before connecting it in debug mode to your pc.
4. Open your command window / terminal on your computer and type the 'adb shell' command (with your phone connected of course). You will need to enable USB debugging in developer settings (which in turn is displayed by tapping the build number of the device 5 times) in order to see the option.
5. Type 'sm list-disks' to list the disks available for adoption. It'll look something like below - take note of the disk ID (disk:179:160 in this example).
6. Partition the disk. For this we use the 'sm partition DISK TYPE RATIO' command. For example, to partition the disk above as fully adopted storage (aka private) I'd use the command 'sm partition disk:179,160 private'. If I wanted a 50/50 split between adopted and regular, I'd use the command 'sm partition disk:179,160 mixed 50'. Easy right?
7. This took almost no time at all for me.
8. Go to the sdcard in storage and move data to it. This will then merge the space on the card and the internal storage.
HTH.
Ok, first problem first. I have the SDK installed, debug mode on and phone connected. I can see the file system on the phone but ADB DEVICES returns nothing. Until I can get that resolve I can't even do the rest.
Can anyone tell me how to get the T-Mobile LG G5 to be recognized by ADB?
Resolved and I believe I have the adoptable storage working now.

Maybe. Please correct me if I'm wrong but adoptable storage tries to only put stuff on the sdcard that will live comfortably there. Nothing system related will go there, so worse case an app takes longer to launch.

Flashed firmware, unsupported SD

Hi I am following the rooting guide for my Sprint S7 and it says to be on PE1. I flashed PE1 without knowing it would wipe all my data..
My SD card was set as adoptable storage. It is now unrecognized/unsupported and the phone wants to format it. Putting the card into a computer does nothing.
Is there any adb command to trip the phone back into adoptable storage? Or to set a flag to turn the card back into portable? Is there anything I can do to make the card readable so I can get all my stuff off of it?
Once you had your phone set up as adoptable storage on a stock Samsung there is the possibility that it was encrypted, as the Samsung Galaxy S7 is encrypted by default. did you use SD card encryption at any time? I'm thinking if I remember correctly you have to format before using SD adoptable and you also have to format to return to use as regular SD card, so I have to say I think your out of luck. Find out what partition type it's formatted as, and Try a data recovery app if u can find one that is compatible with that format. Last of all I know you can use adb to setup adoptable storage again by typing a certain command line but I don't know if it will format the card or if your stuff will be there after. Best to research these things beforehand to avoid crucial data loss but we all learn somehow.
Cheers!

Cant adopt my sd storage to internal / adb shell does not work?

Hey guys,
I hope you can help me with a problem I am facing for several hours now... I just bought a 128gb Samsung micro SD card and noticed too late, that you cant easily adopt it to the phones internal storage. Luckily I found the tutorial on xda which seem to show a way around to still be able to use the sd card as internal storage. Well, for me it does not work so far!
I enabled USB debugging on my phone, all drivers are correctly installed, I've downloaded and installed the whole android sdk just to be sure... When it comes to the cmd actions my S7 will show up after typing the command "adb devices". When I type in "adb shell" I get this: "herolte:/ $" so I guess until now everything is okay. But after I type in "sm list-disks" and "sm partition disk:179,0 private" nothing seems to happen and the next line stays empty like this "herolte:/ $".
Does anyone know how I can solve this problem? Thanks!!

Hi
My findings are not as bad as yours...but I still have a problem
1) adb shell command OK
2)sm commands OK
SD is partitionned according to my wishes ( 75% std SD, 25% supposedly adopted) but I see nowhere ( using Freespace or DiskInfo) that it is been adopted.
what I did:
$ sm list-disks
$ disk:179,0
sm partition disk:179,0 mixed 75
OK seems good
but
$ sm list-disks adoptable
no answer
$ sm set-force-adoptable true
no answer
I'm kind of lost !!!
Something strange which has nothing to do with the precedent...
according to Freespace, my /system is 94% full !!!
what are yr findings ?
I've done nothing special...no root, original Sammy nougat 7.0 Rom
any info greatly appreciated
Hey @zorglub!
Somewhere I've read that Samsung (better Samsuck) has disabled that workaround, too, so with the newest android and Samsung updates, there seems to be no way to adopt the sd card to the phones storage. This also affects at least one Samsung tablet.
Really pisses me off, because you cant play your on card storaged media in VR cinemas and I bought especially for this scenario a Samsung 128gb card. Why dont they give you the choice to coose at least? I bet this **** is gonna be "fixed" in the coming S8.
HI
Unfortunately...I think you're right !!!
Adoptable stuff does not work. I have tried some shell sm commands, in particular 'sm set-force-adoptable true' but when you check 'sm has-adoptable' you always get 'false' for answer.
This might be a show stopper
Let's wait for next release...
Do you think there is any other way to play your sd card media files in VR apps? Somehow normal videos work but I cant play any VR 3D video stored on my SD...

it worked fine for me on my 64gig card although I am about to past a not good update in my thread.
My 128 gig card it didnt work but as it turned my 128 gig wasnt working at all even with just normal portable storage mode.
Adoptable storage does seem not smoothed out, but given it uses F2FS and touchwiz does not support F2FS on portable storage I think its worth it once working.
Now with my working 128 gig card I have made mixed storage, works fine.
Note the list adoptable wont show a result, but it still works in mixed mode.
Code:
[email protected]:/ $ sm list-disks adoptable
sm list-disks adoptable
[email protected]:/ $ sm set-force-adoptable true
sm set-force-adoptable true
[email protected]:/ $ sm list-disks adoptable
sm list-disks adoptable
shell[email protected]:/ $ sm list-disks
sm list-disks
disk:179,0
[email protected]:/ $ sm partition disk:179,0 mixed 50
sm partition disk:179,0 mixed 50
[email protected]:/ $
Then afterwards confirmed 2 extra storage devices in settings/storage and disk info pro shows both partitions one as F2FS and one as exFAT.
Duuude, congratulations you managed to implement your sd card suitably!
Ive kinda got success, too, as I could prove right in the store that my sd card wont play any slowmo videos, although I recorded and stored them directly on my S7. So without doubt there was simply just a defect to my card! With my new one erverything works fine and I bet that I could even implement it to the phones internal storage. Lucky that there is no need anymore !
First broken sd card Ive ever bought in over 20 years.
edit: What. the. ****. Somehow the S7 kind of destroys the SD cards. Slowmo videos I recorded an hour ago and stored them on my card wont play anymore, same happens with movies transfered from my pc to the card. Same scenario as in the beginning!
Hello,
I tried to add my micro sd to the internal memory, and to do that I used this adb method:
in the adb shell
sm partition disk:179,32 private
This method is used and explained on other sites, but I lost the micro sd card, Android doesn't see any more the card, it seems like it doesn't exist or doesn't insert.
when I reboot Android it shows me for a few seconds a message like " not supported card" and then the notification disappears ...
Somebody can help?

"Format as Internal" not Possible with Samsung
Hello fellow Samsung users,
I have a Galaxy J7 V and have been very frustrated with the same issue of not being allowed to effectively use my new 256GB microSD card. I finally got fed up with trying to follow tutorials that just don't seem to work with my phone, so I contacted official Samsung support about the issue. Here is what I found out.
The representative confirmed that "SD cannot be set as a default internal storage on the phone," even after I mentioned potential ADB workarounds. The representative further stated that "we can move the applications [to the microSD card] only manually and they will be moved back to internal storage after update, this feature cannot be changed as it is by default." However, they did say that "you may get this option in the future updates [although] there is no official update available yet."
Overall I feel a little bit better about Samsung, knowing that they are at least aware of the issue, and hope that they follow through with this important update.
Cheers
It's now July 2020 and nothing has changed, the same problem wasn't fixed at all. I don't think they will fix that in the future, because it's an old smatphone.
So the adb workaround no longer works, at all? Am I understanding that correctly? I've been trying to get it to work for a few hours now, and I'm trying to determine if I should give up or not.
I get this
how to make it work?

Hello,
I tried to add my micro sd to the internal memory, and to do that I used this adb method:
in the adb shell
sm partition disk:179,32 private
This method is used and explained on other sites, but I lost the micro sd card, Android doesn't see any more the card, it seems like it doesn't exist or doesn't insert.
when I reboot Android it shows me for a few seconds a message like " not supported card" and then the notification disappears ...
Somebody can help?
------------------------------------------
1|jackpotlte:/ $ sm list-volumes
private:179,34 unmountable
private mounted null
emulated mounted null
jackpotlte:/ $ sm list-disks adoptable
disk:179,32
jackpotlte:/ $ sm partition disk:179,32 private
jackpotlte:/ $
and then nothing, I'm using a Mac os terminal and trying to apply this on my galaxy A8 2018

thanks

Some phones(eg Samsung) don't support micro sd as internal memory(formatting as private) so you have to format it again as public : sm partition disk:179,.. public
