What software can be used to do a full image backup? And would you be able to run the backup if the device does not boot? Can you write to the internal storage from antoher connected device?

If you unlock and root your Xoom you will install a custom ClockworkMod recovery (two custom versions available for the Xoom made by developers here in the xda Xoom forum) and with that you will be able to make a nandroid backup of your system image, to either the external micro sdcard (solarnz v3.2.0.0 R4c Recovery) or to a choice of media, I think (Rogue Recovery using v4.).
You would be able to restore from your saved nandroid by booting into the recovery menu (volume up + power to get to the red dual core logo, wait 3 seconds, then volume down, and then volume up and into your recovery menu).
The PC sees the Xoom as an MTP device. It doesn't act as a mass storage device (at this time) so while there are ways get info into it, it's not the same as actually writing to the internal storage.
is there any commercially available backup software?

No only the free recoveries. You can also just download the images from my sticky, its stock images from Motorola.
i want to install apps and customize my tablet. then take a back.
i run nightly backup on my home system and monthly on my phone. they have saved my ass a couple of times. open software, click restore, go watch TV, and I am back.

To back up apps and data, whatever you choose you can use Titanium Backup on the schedule of your choice. For backing up system image its a nandroid tthru CWM. As a programmer you might figure out a way to schedule auto backups...

Using the method mentioned above I use the rogue recovery to make the nandroid back up and if you have a microsd you can tell the recovery to save the backup to the sdcard for external backups.

This is what recovery backups are. You setup, run a nand backup. When something goes wrong, boot into recovery, restore, watch TV, reboot.

[Guide] Nandroid Backup - backup & restore

What is a Nandroid Backup?
It is a full backup of the partitions on your device’s NAND flash (NAND actually stands for NOT AND, which in simple terms means an electronic gate). Basically a backup of your phones hard drive if you will...
The Nandroid Backup is a snapshot of your device (it means everything on your phone – your apps, data, your current ROM and even the kernel is backed up) at the time you do the back up. If you restore the back up, it changes your phone BACK to that state. You will need clockworkmod (CWM/TWRP). So make sure you have CWM on your device.
The SD Card data is not backed up in the process. Although, the Nandroid Backup itself is created on your SD card. Make sure you have enough space on your SD card to make a COMPLETE copy of your phone.
It’s highly recommended that once you have done a backup, you manually copy it to your computer in case your sd card is wiped or corrupted.
Pre-requisites:
1. Rooted Device:
2. Custom Recovery (CWM or TWRP)
While the OS is running you cannot do a backup. The boot loader in the recovery enables you to take a backup of the OS while it’s not running.
How to Make a Nandroid Backup via CWM:
Backup via CWM:
1.Boot into Recovery pressing in the same time Volume Up + Home + Power buttons for our Galaxy S Advance phones
2. Select ‘Backup and Restore’ from the recovery.
Once you are in recovery, scroll down to the option ‘Backup and Recovery’ with volume Up/Down and select it (Power button for select).
3. Start the backup.
Once you are on the Nandroid screen, select ‘Backup’ to start the backup process. You have the option to ‘Restore’ backup on the same screen.
The backup process may take a while. Take a break for a coffee.
4. Transfer the backup to your computer (recommended).
Once you reboot, you can see the backup in the ‘clockworkmod/backup/…’ (or similar file) directory on your SD card.
Move, copy, or paste this folder on your PC safely.
Restore from a Nandroid Backup via CWM:
1. Boot your device into CWM and navigate to the Nandroid screen.
2. Choose ‘Restore’ and begin the process.
If you select ‘Advanced Restore’ option, you may select which part of the backup to restore – i. e. the boot, system, data or cache. Or choose the whole backup.
3. Reboot your device. Your system is now restored and is exactly the same as the time when the backup was taken.

Agreed. This needs to be incorporated into the CWR guide.

[GUIDE] [NOOB FRIENDLY] How to backup your phone.

HOW TO BACKUP YOUR PHONE
Hey guys!
I've seen a lot of people being confused about how to backup your phone before a custom rom install or a firmware upgrade.
People here mostly use Titanium backup or Helium to use backup their phones, still the new users/noobs dont know how to operate them.
ao I am making a detailed guide for both, Rooted Phones and Non Rooted phones.
Thanks.
COMMON WAYS FOR ROOTED AND NON ROOTED :
CONTACTS : Simple. Android has given us the unique feature of backing up using the phone itself.
-Open the Contacts app
-Press the Menu Button
-Press Import/Export
-Export to SDCard
and youre done. The phone will make a *.vcf file in your system which can be used on any android phone.
IMAGES : Two Alternatives. Using an App or Manually
-App : Use Quick Backup to SD by Linever corporation from the playstore. It backups in the SD card by making a folder for each album that you've transferred.
MANUALLY :
-Copy the DCIM folder.
-Copy the Pictures folder
-Paste it somewhere safe
CALL LOGS : Use Easy Backup frim the playstore
SPECIFIC for NON ROOTED vs. ROOTED.
NON ROOTED PHONES
APPLICATIONS: TWO WORDS. APK EXTRACT from the playstore. IT saves your apps on the Internal SD card and then you can safely copy all your apps
APP DATA : The MOST IMPORTANT backup after contacts
Nobody likes to lose their HighScores or the points earned and start from the beginning.
-Download Helium App from the Playstore
-Download Helium App for the PC (it prompts)
-Enable USB Debugging from developer options
-Backup on the INTERNAL SD first.
-Copy the folder named CARBON from the internal SD to anywhere safe.
You can restore by the same app on some other phone by just pressing restore. Somehow for me I copy the carbon folder to the INTERNAL SD again and then restore as a direct restore from sd does not work.
ROOTED PHONES
We guys have a lot of options.
Ohh yes we do.
APPLICATIONS and APP DATA
Two APPS. TITANIUM BACKUP & HELIUM
-Open Tiranium Backup
-Tap Backup/Restore
-If you want to backup just one app, tap on it and select backup or;
to backup all the apps, use the tick mark in the app on the backup/restore tab.
Restoring Via TIB.
This is one issue many face. But it is simple.
-Just open TiB
-Press Menu button
-Press Batch Actions
-See for restore
-Press on Restore Apps with Missing Data.
HELIUM
The same process as non rooted users, but then we dont want USB debugging on or the Desktop app.
Just give root permissions and start backing up.
I find helium better than TiB for App and App data.
Again. Opinions differ
This is a basic guides for the "Important Things" in our phone.
If you want me to add about anything specific, Just leave a reply.
Or if you have any other ways or backing up, Ill add it here.
I'll make sure I keep this updated.
Thank you
PRECAUTIONS :
Never Backup system apps and try to push them on other roms.
Dont even try pushing them into system/app or system/priv-apps.
Each system app is made according to a relevant framework.
This can lead to a possible funny behaviour of the phone and many unexpected crashes and weird bootloops.
Its always advised to backup and restore the general utility apps that can be downloaded from the playstore to save data and download time
Do update backups once a week. This helps your backup not to get obsolete with time
Thanks @malybru for the help
[B]Guide for a NANDROID a.k.a. NAND backup.[/B]
Nandroid backups are a life saviour if you dont want to flash the whole stock rom then again do the process of custom recoveries etc. just because you had a "bootloop"
Like c'mon! A bootloop/random ui crashing and you flash a full stock rom. Sounds funny.
But yes, people have to do it if they dont have a handy nandroid backup.
Pre requisite:
-A Custom Recovery.
The best and widely used ones being Philz Recovery
TWRP Recovery
CWM recovery
(Will update links after sometime)
-Knowledge of how to flash things via odin.
-Some common sense on selecting what to flash
How to Install a Custom Recovery
Should I tell that?
in brief
1.Boot into download mode
2.Connect phone to odin and wait for odin to recognise
3.Select the recovery in AP/PDA
4.Press start and let it do its work.
How to enter into a custom recovery
a. Press Volume up + Home Button + Power Button. As soon as you see The GalaxyS4 screen, leave all three and in a jiffy press Volume Up + Home Button.
b. Use quickboot/any other mod that you run that boots your phone in recovery.
Nand Backup
a. When youre in the recovery, press on backup/restore
b. Press on backup and do a full system backup.
It usually takes 30 minutes for a bloated firmware backup. Restore takes the same time.
Do have atleast 40% battery.
Remember, backups can be selective too (Only Data/Only System etc etc.)
Same is for the restore.
A nand backup will always restore you to your last backup position (obvious). So do keep manual backups too.
Good guide.
Added to sticky roll-up thread.
thank you!
What about a basic nandroid backup?
Removed. Backup of messages is not available in stock sms app after all. Sorry for any problems my error may have caused...

Anyone know how to backup bluetooth pairings? That causes me most pain when updating roms. Titanium has the feature but does not work

Mr. @deepankerS,
This guide makes life easy!
You mentioned to back up data and apps through APK Extract, Helium, TiB on the internal SD.
Can I do it on the external SD instead? Would that affect the restore process if i was to restore data and apps backed up on the external SD Memory card?

Lol first edit your comment and shorten the op thread
And yeah..if everything is on the internal sd, copy these folder manually from the internal to external. By default these apps will save info on the internal sd card.
Thus you have settings in the apks to select where to backup.
Just Helium doesnt work on extsd, be it backup/restore.
-TitaniumBackup
-Carbon (contauns helium data)
-ApkExtract/Extracted
Need some help, i have been making backups with recoverys TWRP and Phliz both. I did a full backup of my stock rom 4.4.2 and with TWRP when restore i was unable to write to internel sdcard. And ita was really a annoyn situation. And with the new Philz when i did the restore after boot all apps keep fc could not use it at all.
Any idea why this happens is it due to rong way of wipe (data, system, cashe) when i flash custom roms? Or way that i backup the stock rom? This only happens with the stock rom

Hello there @deepankers
I have rooted my phone and everything was going absolutely smooth until today I can't do anything to my external SD card (delete, create folder, etc...). I have already done the SD fix using the app "next app* when I first rooted the phone. I tried Uninstalling then reinstalling es explorer however the problem still exists! I'm sure that es explorer has root access. I tried using the stock "my files" app to do any modifications to my external SD however with no luck!
I appreciate your help in resolving this issue.

I think the isuue is stock rom do a format to its partions which is why it do many isuues. Coz in reovery it do its own wipe before resotre. Which makes problems to stock.
Even in new philz i had the issue but what i did was wipe full (not internalsd) restore only system and boot once after that i restore data. In that way no isuue at all. All work good.

Phone boots to OS immediately shuts down and reboots to recovery

Hi,
My OP6 is unlocked, running TWRP (3.2.3-0) recovery and magisk. I didn't flash zips for about 2 years, and I actually don't even remember what magisk version or what OOS version I run...
Today my phone suddenly restarted while using some navigation app. Since then, every time I turn it on it boots to OS but immediately shuts down and reboots to recovery (TWRP). I just can't boot to system. I can boot to trwp or fastboot. Both slots yield that behavior.
My phone used to restart every now and then, but this is the first time that it won't boot to system afterwards.
I got a 2 years old twrp backup (system+boot), if it can help.
Do you think I can somehow boot to system (preferably without wiping data)?
And if not, is there any way to transfer data from the phone to pc? (I couldn't make my pc recognise the phone)
Thanks
Try timing it just right before your phone starts up again with holding power and vol down button so you can get into TWRP. You then should be able to see your phone on your PC to back up.
Sounds like your data might be corrupt.
I am able to enter twrp, just the data is corrupt somehow.
So I spend a whole day fixing it:
1) Created a nandroid backup of the current (unbootable) state - this will just backup my applications data
2) Wiped data+cache from twrp (factory reset)
3) Now it boots normally, but all data is gone (I also copied the nandroid backup to my pc just to be safe)
4) Flashed magisk
5) Installed all missing apps using some Nandroid Manager app
6) Restored the data of all those apps using titanium backup ("restore from nandroid" option). Note that TB couldn't restore the apps+data, I had to preinstall the apps for it.
7) Remember to create snapshots and backups more frequently
Thanks!

Saving settings and data while updating LineageOS

So I've read that regular LineageOS updates work with "dirty flashes" but the bigger updates (between majoe Android versions) require "clean flash".
Is it possible to somehow save all the system and application settings and data between the big upgrades requiring clean flash?
Thanks and sincerely

Boot into TWRP, select the Backup option, then select "advanced", select the data partition but do not select any other partition, swipe the slider to start the backup. When the backup finished, move the backup file to external sdcard or PC if you don't have external sdcard.
When you flash your ROM(do not store your ROM and gapps in your internal storage, store it on external, if you, don't have external, store it in your internal but don't wipe your internal when you do your wipes), wipe system, data, cache and dalvik cache then flash your ROM. After the ROM finishes, while still in TWRP, you can either go ahead and restore the data backup that you created or you can reboot into system to let the ROM do its initial load then immediately power off, reboot into TWRP, select Restore, then restore the backup of your data partition and reboot the device. I would let the ROM boot then go back to TWRP and then restore the data.
Thank you sir!
Is there any downside of restoring from backup instead if setting up everything manually?
Are there any downsides of choosing one if the two options proposed by you over the other?
Sincerely

1) no downside, it restores all settings, apps and app data to exactly what you had before flashing the update.
2) no downsides, it is just that letting the ROM boot first then going back and restoring the backup reduces chances of things being buggy after the update.
I recommend that you boot into TWRP, select Backup and make a full backup of everything except for internal storage. Then, when you flash your ROM then let it boot then go back to TWRP, select Restore, then select "advanced restore" then select only the data partition and none of the others(this will restore only the data partition from the backup and not the others), then swipe the slider to start the restore process then reboot the device.
The reason I say to create a full backup of everything is so that you have a working backup to restore if something goes wrong with the update process. It gives you a restore point to go back to so you can troubleshoot what went wrong then try again. And if everything goes right with the update, you won't need to restore the whole backup, you can just do the advanced restore and restore only the data partition and then you should be where you want to be.
I don't know if this will backup and restore your SMS/MMS text messages, you may need to backup/restore those via one of the SMS backup and restore apps in the PlayStore, there are several that can do this.
Thank you again.
Does this backup work for migration between any custom ROMs let's say from LineageOS to PixelExperience or only between versions of the same ROM like from Lineage 18 to 19?
Is it possible to migrate the same set of settings and data from stock ROM with locked bootloader to a custom ROM?
Sincerely
