Hey guys, i have just come across this on kickstarter.
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/glowdeck/glowdeck-wireless-power-light-and-sound
It looks interesting and i think it may be the first of its kind? Anyone aware of any other viable alternatives? I love that it has multiple charging coils so you can just chuck your phone down on it.
This will beat my current setup which is an energizer qi charger and an old logitech alarm clock with a bluetooth ipod dongle (this works well btw, just not pretty)
What do you guys think? Any other things like this available or going to be soon?

Looks nice! For a $100 for the mini version is kinda steep for a charger. $275 for the one with bt speakers and display...is ok, but still kinda steep for a nightstand piece. EDIT: I kept looking at it and I opted for the single display with speakers lol. I may change my mind down the road, but I like the look of it. It's a step up from the multiple charger stands like the Tylt VU but that one has no display and runs retail for $70usd plus any shipping.

I see you guys are discussing Glowdeck - which is great; I'm very glad to hear that it is of interest to you - so I thought I'd chime in and try to explain some of the price-related comments you raised. A backer just asked how much I expect the Multiple Device Edition to retail for after the Kickstarter campaign, and here's a paraphrase of the response I sent him:
Because there are still some cost details to be hammered out (with components suppliers/manufacturers), it's difficult to say exactly what the retail price point for Glowdeck will be (assuming the campaign succeeds), but I set the reward levels on Kickstarter about $50.00 below what I expect the Multiple Device Edition to retail for (i.e. $375.00). I thought this would be a way to reward the first folks who support the product.
To be sure, it's not an inexpensive product, but in addition to going against the grain (at least in the tech world) with an elegant wood finish, I was determined to use only premium quality components. Instead of Glowdeck being a product that does a bunch of things just okay, I set out to build a high-end device that would perform excellently across the board.
The question now is whether the market is willing to pay a little bit more for a product that doesn't skimp on quality - both aesthetically and functionally. But with your pledge, I'm encouraged that the answer might be yes...

Does the Glowdeck top up the phone overnight? Ive read a few posts about some qi chargers charging the phone to 100% then turning off completely, so if you charge it over night it will be at about 90-95% in the morning instead of 100%..

I would absolutely be interested in something like this, but the Qi wireless standard, while the dominant standard now, may not be in the near future. I'm sure you've done your research to know that a bunch of big names back another standard (and I won't get into it here). As such, investing $200+ on a device that may not work with my future devices is a hard pill to swallow. I'm not the kind of person that would buy a wireless charging case as an accessory so if my next phone doesn't support Qi, my Glowdeck would lose much of it's functionality.
In addition, and again with my view of never buying a wireless charging case, just not enough phones support Qi natively (integrated). If wireless charging was mainstream (and ignoring the standards war), I would really be interested in something like this. I currently use a wireless charger for my Nexus 4 and it's awesome, but will my next phone have it? My next phone may be the Moto X and it's already stated that it won't come with wireless charging. If my phone is the Nexus 5, again, we will not know if it comes with wireless charging. I almost feel that if I buy a Glowdeck, I would be restricting myself to wireless charging phones only to ensure I won't be stuck with having a $200 alarm clock.
Overall, wireless charging having an uncertain future through it's adoption and competing standards hurts this product in my eyes. Tack on the premium price and I can't see myself buying something like this right now. However, the idea is great -- many times I wish I had 2 wireless chargers so I could put one on my nightstand. Glowdeck does this and so much more.
Just my feedback that I'm sure people will disagree with. Goodluck on your campaign!
Really nice charger/speaker/clock! Would love to have one but yes, the price of $275 (not considering FX) is a bit too steep for me since it is just going to be a "want".. But you have a nice product there! Good luck with your kickstarter project!

Thanks for the feedback - it is all well taken. Deciding on a wireless standard was difficult, but there was a rationale behind the decision to go with the Qi standard (at least for the time being), and I think I will address this point in an update to the Kickstarter campaign in the next few days.

Thanks for the kind words. And I know where you're coming from with regard to the price. Out of curiosity, would a modified version of Glowdeck with no display (nor WiFi connectivity) appeal to you as well? If so, what price would seem reasonable for such a product?

I like the display because that will make it function as a bedside clock too, but WiFi to receive feeds does not appeal to me . As for price, I would not comment since I don't know the cost involved in such a project.
IMO Lose the display, things like daydream make up for it. The screen is too small anyway (OR/AND) Lose the wifi, apps should make it possible to pull all info from the phone. Make something like a slope or stand with the nfc inside so the phone can stay upright(Also lowers the number of coils u need).
It has all of the functionality I've ever wanted in speakers before except the design is so terrible. I don't know why anyone would want the weird wood finish on this, it looks so tacky and gives off a hipster vibe. I would kill to have a speaker with all these functions in something more geometric, modern, satin colors and less of a 1950s vibe. Price is also a turnoff.

I own a local store which has about 35 stands for each product, and me and my team want to run slideshows (picture+video) in each one.
My guess is that I should use tablets.
Why tablets?
a) Slideshows needs a software to run them. Displays are just displays.
b) KODI (XBMC) app is a good option, as each Kodi would also run a Samba server and I could send the media I need to play to each one from one computer.
c) I looked for digital photo frames, but they don't support any kind of networking, and the few ones I've found are as expensive as tablets.
My questions are,
1) Is it fine if they are connected to AC power all day 24/7? Our local is opened 24hs. Should I take off their batteries? I don't know if tablets are prepared for that purpose.
2) Is there a difference between generic tablets and Samsung Galaxy Tabs 3? In fact, I really don't need high-end tablets, I just need to run the slideshows. But my only fear is the device-life.

1. I remember reading an article about keeping smartphones plugged in for long periods of time after they reach 100%. From what I can recall, it stated the batteries inside phones and tablets, even most laptops, are designed in a way where once they reach 100% capacity, the device will run directly off the electricity of the charger, rather than the battery's charge. This prolongs the battery's life and, quality, and you should have no problem leaving then plugged in for long periods of time.
2. You would certainly be fine with the Galaxy Tab 3, really any tablet model would do the job. It really depends on how much you're willing to spend for the quality of the display. A larger tablet provides a larger screen (obviously), just making is more appealing to a customer! But sure a larger screen will cost you more. More expensive tablets typically have higher resolutions. PPI (pixels per inch) come into effect. You'll notice a more visually appealing experience if you buy into tablets high a higher resolution, or more PPI.
Basically, any tablet will.. Do the job. You will be able to run slideshows just fine with literally any tablet, you do not need to worry about that. It's just up to you to decide how much money you're willing to spend for how high quality you want the display. The Tab 3 will work just fine, but it's display is, in my experience, mediocre. But then again, that's my opinion for the tablet's entertainment side, if I needed to use it for a simple slideshow, it would do the job just fine.
I'm unsure what your budget is, but here are some examples (As a new user, XDA won't let me post direct links, you will have to google/amazon them manually)
))- The Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 has a phenomenal screen at 8.4 inches it's probably the perfect size. 359 PPI - $220 on amazon.
There are tons of different android tablets, and many different Samsung variations, listing the ones I would consider competitive for your needs, I would be listing 10 Samsung tablets alone. When researching the perfect tablet, make sure you consider Price, Screen Size, and PPI. For simple slideshows, the RAM, Processor, and other internals really won't make a difference.
Wow, really thanks for your feedback.
I read something about that battery intelligence when connected to AC power yeah, but I was wondering how long could tablets live turned on permanently.
It's not the same thing if I should change tablets every 2 months or every year.

Any well know brand will last you well over 2 months. Plugged in endlessly may sound risky, but in my opinion, they should last years, even if plugged in all day every day.
By well known brand, I mean something like a Samsung, Motorola, etc, because you can find some seriously cheap android tablets for extremely cheap prices, but they don't even have a name brand. The boxes just say "Android Tablet". Stay away from these. Go with a Samsung, Asus, Motorola, Sony, etc.
Another tip, a very important tip, use the standard USB cable and USB Brick Wall Adapter that come bundled with your tablets. If a cable becomes worn or breaks, I highly recommend purchasing one directly from the original manufacturer.
You certainly will not have to replace them every couple months. Depends on the tablet, but any name brand should last you at least a year in my opinion, as long as you stick with the original charging cables and wall adapters, and take good care of them. (If the tablets are prone to direct sunlight all day long, this will overtime have an impact on the device, most likely screen discoloring. As long as they're inside at average room temperature, you should be good with the tablets for a very very long time.
Sure I'm some random person giving you advice, and it's ultimately up to you to believe what I say. My posts have been a mix of facts and opinions, so do take that into consideration. I'd like to include I've been an android device owner for about 4 years, and I've owned about 11 different android phones, and 7 different android tablets. I root them and install custom ROMs, I use android devices every single day, and I would consider myself more knowledgeable with android devices than the average android user.
Does anybody have any actual info on the new Samsung Wireless Charging Pad?
I'm assuming it's a 1A charger, but I havn't seen anything regarding its maximum surface temp, coil count, or anything of that nature. So does anyone know what we're dealing with?
While I'd like to just assume Samsung didn't make a device that is going to overheat and cause premature battery death, part of me thinks that's precisely what the may have done haha.

Seems to just be another 2A input, 1A output charger, but that's just one more thing that hasn't really been clarified on.
you won't find any wireless charger at 2A.. they're all 1A at most. i doubt we would ever even see a 2A pad as i can imagine the amount of heat it will generate..
i have this dock/pad: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RGIK7P/
which IMO is better than any samsung overprice pad. phone can be held in portrait, landscape or flat like a pad and has 3 coils so it doesn't matter as long as it's touching the surface. it even holds my tablet, and works with 2 of my other devices. just make sure whatever you buy it's Qi and not PMA because even though the S6 supports both, i think in the end Qi wins and becomes the wireless charging standard. most phones coming out are Qi and at least you know the pad you buy will work with future devices.

As I said in one of the other threads (I think in the Edge forum) - I think we can be fairly certain this is what it is. The S6 supports Qi and PMA and there arn't many solutions that do this. I think Samsung will be using TI's solution, which is 5W.
Infact, I have just found this: https://e2e.ti.com/blogs_/b/fullych.../11/wireless-charging-finally-goes-mainstream
Although they dont specifically say they are the supplier, they do provide a link to their PMA/Qi solution suggesting that is the chip Samsung used.

This guy's version is the one without the inductive charger, product #EP-PG920IBE
The one you're talking about is: http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/EP-PG920IWUGUS
the input is 1.5-2A but only 1A comes out... wireless charging = wasted energy which is why more needs to go in to get 1A to come out.. if the charger was only 1A input, about half would be wasted and you'll only get about 500mAh out.
as i mentioned, stop wasting your time looking for a 2A wireless charger. there isn't one and won't be one for a long time until they made more improvements to the technology...

all i see is amp talk, my apologies..
while i cant provide you with a definite answer to the coil count, i am confident it wil just be 1 coil. almost all of the small round pads are just one coil because the pad is small there is no need for more coils. the bigger pads have more coils to cover the entire pad. coil count also is pretty irrelevant since its only useful on pads that have more surface area, or pads that can charge multiple devices at the same time, which the samsung cannot do.
not trying to sound negative, but there are so many better, and cheaper options out there compared to the overpriced samsung accessories.

Personally I'm actually hoping it's one coil. Less coils tends to translate into less heat, and right now I'm trying to decide what's going to be my bedside overnight charger that the device will spend 6-10 hours on bi/daily so that's a key concern.
I do agree that it's pretty pricey though. There are definitely some chargers that ought to do just as good of a job for literally half the cost provided you don't have any unusual needs. I have a few personally, or I'd actually probably get this charger.

I am not good at the technical side of this stuff - but curious if there is any disadvantage to useing the Charger you linked to - versus the one made by samsung (aside from yours can be purchased now and samsungs has not been released yet) ? Any additional benefits aside from the Upright Dock? Kind of nice to have it hold the phone up like that (as long as it is stable and doesn't fall over if you bump it?) thoughts>

No disadvantage, if anything the Samsung has disadvantage..
the one i posted is more versatile (can hold the phone in 3 different positions: Portrait mode, landscape, or flat) and is cheaper.

For the one I linked the only issues would be that it -might- be a little warmer and the charging LED might annoy you because it flashes. It also may or may not have as much "range" on its charging surface horizontally and vertically.
Of course until Samsung either posts some real specs or some testing is done on the pad, I can't really call it one way or another regarding the surface temperature of the device while charging. Same goes for the amount of throw the charging surface has in terms of being able to penetrate perhaps say, a thick case.
As for the one tft posted, I'm not super familiar with it but given that it is a 3-coil unit it likely gets warmer than either the one I linked or the Samsung charger will get, though this would somewhat be mitigated while it's standing.
Frankly unless you have some sort of special function you need your charger to perform (or not perform- IE; flashing LEDs and excessible audible notifications) or some qualification you need to have met , there's no reason to spend more than around $30 on a wireless charging pad imo.
Find something with overcharge protection (generally not an issue in newer pads, and the device shouldn't allow itself to be overcharged; the issue here is excessive, unnecessary power consumption and heat), decent range, and a design you don't mind seeing occasionally and you should be good to go.
The only time you might have some need to spend more on a charging pad is when you're looking at standing chargers or car mounts. I'd look to Tylt for those in particular, but that's moreso just because I like their designs and support their company. You can definitely find a cheaper standing charger that should be quite comparable (tft listed one), but when it comes to the car mount I actually don't think there's a better one out there at the moment personally. The only one I'd consider on par with the Tylt in terms of design and usable functionality is the AirDock, but that's only assuming its sticky/magnet surface NEVER drops your device, which I just don't trust in this price bracket of devices. Not to mention, the AirDock is the most expensive car mount I've bothered researching.
I have a chinese Qi pad that worked great with the Nexus 5. I cant seem to get it to connect to the S6
anyone having issues?
Hi guys - any one looking for a cheap solution and doesn't mind the standard, you can pick up the Powermat 24 hour pack for the Galaxy SIII or iPhone 4/4s for about $10. The cool thing bout this is that it comes with an external battery pack!
http://www.amazon.com/Duracell-Powermat-24-Hour-System-Samsung/dp/B00A0HZV7K/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1428360755&sr=8-2&keywords=powermat

It works great with the Galaxy S6 - tested with the Iron Shield Verus and Ringke Slim cases, the only real issue is that the coil on the phone is right under the camera so the camera hump sometimes messes with the placement.
Note that the description says that you need to use the included case to charge your phone - you can ignore that the Galaxy S6 is a PMA 1.0 device.
I wonder if Samsung knows that a hell of alot of people already have the S6 now?
Seems to me the wireless charging pad that was supposed to be part of the S6 product lineup would already be released.
Also it should be noted that Samsung apparently offers 50% off codes for accessories to users who register their device on Samsung's website, therefore, the "official" charger would be only $25.

anything over $20 is still too much for a charger when we have fast charging capabilities. wireless charges at a much slower rate
