Okay, so I just learned how to extract system.img from KDZs, and how to extract the files from said system.img. Could I add all the mods I would regularly add to my phone to the extracted files, re-join them back to a system.img, name it rootedsystem and flash it with our phone's regular root flashing procedure (http://forum.xda-developers.com/g-flex2/development/lg-g-flex-2-ls996-zv6-sprint-5-1-1-t3169212)? It would make installing mods and re-flashing a whole lot easier to have a system.img with all my mods installed. Can I do that, or not? Thanks in advance.

I can't fully speak on it as I've never done it but it's not going to be as simple most likely. As you would need to also learn on how to make a .tot file. As You wouldn't be able to make it into a kdz as those are official.

I actually know how to extract system.img from KDZs, and the files from the system.img. I'm asking if I can just add mods to the system.img's files just like I would add mods to my phone directly, and then flash it.
Also, the part about just flashing it with root flashing works. You do the same thing for rooting but for another image.

anybody can tell me how to convert official ROM to update.zip
I want to know how to make an official from the ROM can customize the ROM, instead of only at others do the update.zip in thickening delete...
First, you need to run the RUU.
Check in your system TEMP folder, and you should have an update.zip there.
Unzip that, and you'll have amongst others, system.img
Extract the files via unyaffs or other means, customize your build, zip and sign.
Voila.
My guess is that a simple search via the search tool would've resolved that, then again, I guess you were too lazy to do that.

Wouldn't that be what the Odin files are in the "get back to stock" thread?

Pretty certain Odin files are zip files. I can't check into it at work but I would guess you can just use 7zip and extract them. Otherwise, just flash your phone back to stock and pull whatever you need from there.

There is no such thing. That's why you have to use Odin to go back to stock. And I know the file extensions of Odin, however those files contain other folders/files. Which is why I said use 7zip to see them.

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.
You know another thing you could try is the pick n pack rom file. It is stock deodexed and a flashable .zip file. The odin files can be opened on a PC you just have to use the programs mentions. But as far as a complete stock flashable. zip file. You aren't going to find it cause we just don't have it. Best bet would be to download the mentioned programs and decompress the ODIN file.
Another thing I just remembered is the program winrar recognizes the .tar ODIN files as winrar archives. You may be able to decompress and extract the files you need with that program. But if your gong to have to download anyting I would just do the above mentioned programs as they have been proven to work.
Tap-a-Talked.
As stated above you can get those from pick and pack it is the stock rom essentially and includes all of the .apk's and files in a .zip (you'll need apktool to decompile the .apk's in windows), or you could flash stock in odin and then pull them with ADB (QTADB works well for that).
You won't be able to work with the .bin files located inside the .tar (in windows), but you can get into the .tar with winrar or 7zip. You need linux to get into the .bin files
I just can't find a way to extract what is in the .img files.
It's such a small file so shouldn't be hard to find.
Downloading it from the Play store does not resolve the issue
How can I re-acquire the needed .odex file and/or extract what I may need from the .img files?

Do you have a Backup of your system - if so restore your backup. If not google extract .img files and look for software.
No backup...I just need to find a way to extract the files from the .img files of which I did google but nothing useful came up

Why the hell is it impossible for someone to find a way to get such a small measly file to get this stupid update to go through!!
Which update are you trying to apply? You will need the pre-updated file. 4g updates were 3.2.4 and 3.2.6.

Because that's the first thing you do when you are going to flash stuff. If you had done this the first time you wouldn't be in this situation.

did u ever find the file? if so can you send it to me. i have a similar issue
I have spent several weeks working on this (reading thread after thread) on modifying stock firmware and im running into a problem. I more or less want to know if what i want to do is actually possible. I have downloaded the original .tar.md5 firmware image, opened with 7zip and "extracted" the .tar file (more or less just removed the hash) and then extracted the .img files from the .tar file. I have unpacked/mounted/modified/repacked using several methods (dsixda kitchen -which havent been able to work around adding the java path since after i add the path cygwin thinks im missing clean app until i remove the path in which case i get an error saying it cant find java/ i have tried mounting using ext4_utils in ubuntu) my issue arises when i take my modified and repacked system.img file i cant get it to work either by 1. zipping it in a .tar with the other .img files and flashing with odin, 2. zipping system.img alone into a .tar and flashing with odin, 3. installing cwm/root and flashing the system.img)
More or less my question is
1. is it possible to modify the stock firmware and load it onto the tablet without rooting
2. can system.img be flashed by itself or does it need the other .img files in the same .tar
3. does the tar file require being signed before flashing even with CWM recovery and root already on the tablet?
I have used these forums for a while to find answers, but i am new to posting, i havent needed to post a question until now since i spend as much time researching as i can before bothering people with a question (i like to figure stuff out and hate to admit defeat) Thanks in advance for the help despite my noobishness
Hello all.
I haven't posted here for years. My account is still active, but I am no longer allowed to post in specific forums regarding ROMs, so I am asking here.
[moderators: sorry if this is the wrong topic. It is the closest I could find, since my question is not device specific]
I have an Android 9 box which is signed with AOSP test certificates.
I also have an update.zip file for this box.
This box has A/B OTA support, it is working and verified through fastboot.
I want to edit and repackage the update.zip
I know how to do it on old ROMs, but I could not find any tool that can repackage payload.bin
There are several tools to unpack it, and I used one to extract boot.img and system.img
But I can't find any way to package these files back in to payload.bin format.
I tried various google searches and even analyzing the open source unpacking tools, but building a packaging tool from scratch is too complex for me at this point.
Any advice?
Have you found anything for this? I am trying to repack the payload.bin as well from modified IMG files, but I cant find anything on the web.
I extracted this script from linux-86 tools, pretty sure this is the one that repacks all the images into payload.bin, but donno what's the exact code inside it that makes it possible... Understand the last 100 lines & you might succeed.

Hey
I've also tried everything, how do you pack it back into a payload.bin, I only wanted usb rights in the Platform.xml, I didn't want that anymore, that's enough for me, but how do I pack it again, thanks
I'm asking here as I never got an answer, sorry
