Hey,
what would u guys recommend me to do with my xperia z3?
Install another ROM or just root?
Maybe something totally different?
I guess neither Ubuntu touch nor Kali Nethunter are working :/
so what is the best option now for me ?
I found 5.1.1 version .264 the best, you can have root, Xposed and a great battery.
6.0.1 brought only a 33% lower battery life for me, with no apparent benefit (except security fixes that is)
If you have Xposed you can put the Nougat nav bar ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/xposed-pixel-navigation-bar-pixel-t3502987 ) and the N-ify quick toggles/reply ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/xposed-android-n-ify-features-t3345091 ) and you're done, looking like Nougat, but with the great Lollipop battery life.
I dont like to give up security :/
Is there a security or privacy based rom for xperia z3 ?

Was about to recommend that too, @sashpta remember your need an unlocked bootloader though.
Hmm oke,
Is the a detailed guide on how to do all those things? That jaguar guy also said I need LP or MM first and an unlocked bootloader etc...
I don't want to break my phone so a detailed guide would be nice.
And are still all apps working on that phone? Like WhatsApp, Firefox etc.?

They're all here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3/general
Although, if you don't already know what those mean, things can get tricky.
Eg. unlocking the bootloader will invalidate your warranty, if you care

Yes, that's a given.
Warranty is gone sincd this month, that's why I want to do something now. So that wont be a problem.
Thx for the link. I hope it all works when I try to do it.
Is there a high chance of my phone breaking?
Or is there even a way to make a backup or something so that I can recover it everytime I fail?
Do make a backup because you need to wipe all (!!) for unlocking and flashing.
Hmm k
I guess there is also a guide for those backups isnt it?

I'd rather save media from Download/DCIM/Whatsapp/Telegram/Music/Movies/etc.
A backup app like TItanium might work, not sure on the details though.

Does such an app also safe the OS?
Nope, not sure what you want.
when u install that rom, then u do changes in ur current os (that is installed on ur mobile), maybe u even delete it (not sure, that's how i imagine it hehe)
so when u fail u can't go back to how it is by default (the default android version)
so i wonder if u can backup that android version that's given by sony. so no matter what happens u can just go back to it
What version do you have now? ( About-> last text down 23.something??

Yes, you can just go back to that (and then obtain root afterwards if you want that).
And the backups for this are explained in 'general'?
There is no backup, per se, you flash whatever you want, and if you don't like it you can go back to your version.
Yes, you will probably wipe everything from your device, so MAKE A BACKUP of your stuff on your PC or something, and then play with these.
Not sure what you mean by "backup" though?!

Ah oke, I thought it's like when u change the OS on a PC.
Then the old OS is gone, so either u need a 'recovery backup' or the .iso of ur old OS. Or u hardly can go back to ur old OS.
But I guess it isnt like that with a mobile.
So is the version i have now on my android still 'under' jaguar then ? or can i just download my actual version somewhere and 'install' it on the device ?

It depends on your skill level. It may be hard for you but easy for me . You could try this: http://builder.clockworkmod.com/ or building it from source (you'll need to do that for the ROM too).

I guess they just haven't released it, yet.

Considering that the images will have to be flashed through fastboot, you'll probably lose root and everything else on data/system partitions (unless they don't wipe it, but I think it does).

As long as you don't flash the userdata.img, all /sdcard data will be fine. You don't have to flash userdata.img to bump android versions! System, boot would do just fine (and bootloader if they bump it as well)
Or you could just wait till a flashable zip is posted. Someone will have one up within hours of release.

Unless they changed the folder structure like they did a few releases ago - if they did, best to do a clean install.
I'm backing up right now just in case.
Don't wanna mess with the installation script by flashing some things and not others (although there would be virtually no risk by flashing system and boot partition), but better safe than sorry, after all, we can just shove everything back when finished
Consider ir a backup routine, and you'll have an updated bk

That's an entirely different scenario. Each and everyone of us would need to wipe clean if that happens but usually a system and boot flash would do just fine
The N5 has been my FIRST of many, many, many Android phones and even Windows Pocket PC phones that I haven't felt the need to unlock/root etc. Everything has just worked great on it and I have always been able to do everything I wanted to do from this phone. I have been so satisfied with the phone that it has kept me away from XDA for a while. Don't know if that is a good thing or bad, lol. I used to be on this site for hours every single day and now I feel like I am light years behind in rooting. HA!
L has me interested though and I am contemplating unlocking my bootloader for it which just becomes a PITA with losing your data and adding things back and all that great stuff that takes so much of your time. Then if things suck you have to flash back to something else and the never ending process continues. The N5 has gotten me so much time back in my life but I feel like it might demand some of my time back to it. Oh I hate this stuff!!!!
I think I'll make a backup, just in case, as someone said previously, I would prefer to make a clean installation if it's needed and use the image provided by Google.
Thanks!

LOL... Who cares what backup I'm talking about? That's irrelevant to the question, which was "does this require starting over?"
Let me try asking again, I suppose.
Does this require [mean that I'll need to be] starting over [Reformatting/wiping all data on device; 'starting' from factory settings] or could I restore a backup [the copied data from my phone to another device, in order to restore data] I made [after rooting with the method you posted]?

Relevant is to ask correctly , to the point and give relevant information , this is not the mind reading section of the forum
what kind of backup you made? Titanium?
What data you mean , user data or apps data?
If you followed the procedure in post 3 the same in both telephones( same model) and both have the same firmware restoring app and settings , user data should be possible ...data of those apps i would not restore .

Does this imply that one backup may not restore data in this case while another may? I used SmartSwitch on a PC, Titanium wouldn't let me back up without root. Are you implying that it matters which backup program I use?
I wasn't planning to back up app data such as game progress, just apps, user settings and files.
I've already started from factory 3 times on this phone and I simply didn't want to go through settings again.
Regardless I think this gives me the information I needed, I wouldn't feel so bad about restarting my phone again just to root it, if I can get all my settings and files back.

Do you mean keeping the encrypted data from the stock firmware? If so, then no. Root always changes the encryption keys. Even the methods that allow root + encryption still require a wipe at first.
Sorry if this is a dumb question but I am not clear after reading several threads, and I've been out of the custom ROM and root game for 6 months or so.
I'm currently on the March version of PureNexus. Unlocked, rooted, etc. I kind of want to try out stock Android O. Would this be simple? I can just back up my current setup in TWRP and then what?
Sorry, like I said, it has been 6 months and I don't want to screw up anything... Phone has been running great but I want the shiny new toy... ?

Due to the lack of pie support of the pay solution at the moment, you can downgrade your phone to OREO, install the solution, take a picture and upgrade your phone to PIE again.
You need newflasher v13 from XDA and the stock Oreo ROM I uploaded in the TWRP thread.
And a downgrade requires factory reset.
Because of the encryption.

Go into my TWRP thread and install TWRP and magisk.
Root your phone, backup your apps with Titanium Backup
Downgrade to the Oreo firmware I uploaded there, use xperifix as DRMfix.
Boot into Oreo, use the camera to take one shot.
Upgrade to PIE and reinstall your apps with Titanium Backup.
Titanium Backup and xperifix costs some €/$
Then wait for xperifix PIE release to get your 100% photo quality back.
