I've tried several keyboards that allow swiping and they all malfunction when I try to use them. They work some of the time, but very often the swipe trail will veer down to the space bar in the middle of each word. This happens on the stock Samsung keyboard, the Google keyboard, Swiftkey and Swype. I'm guessing it has to be a screen problem, but have no idea how to troubleshoot or fix it. It's out of warranty by about six months, but it's in perfect condition otherwise. Running rooted KitKat.
Any ideas?

You can check the touchscreen function in Factory Mode.
Use calculator to enter the code:
(+30012012732+
In Factory Mode, then enter
*#0*#
Your tablet will have a menu of many tests, including the touchscreen test. Use BACK button to exit testing and factory mode.
This is an example, if all are green, it will pass and exit the test

Well, not ported as they already mostly worked, just fixed a couple of hiccups. Nothing very clever going on here, but may be of interest to some folks.
As per request in another thread, I've fixed the Desktop Home app for the Samsung Vibrant so that the one thing that doesn't seem to work properly, the "Alarm" button, is now ok.
You can grab the APK from:

I've also partially fixed the Vibrant Car Home app so that the icons are centered and the "Contacts" link works. The "Search" button doesn't seem to do anything and it seems to be hit & miss as to if you get a "Browser" icon or a "Voice Search" icon as pictured below. It may be a compatibility issue with the JME firmware I'm running, I'll have a play later. Anyway, you can grab the .APK from:
http://db.tt/qN07wwk
The app is incredibly no-frills, there's no other settings or options whatsoever other than what appears on the screen. I'd suggest using the Car Home v3 app from the market instead, although this one does look pretty.
The apps don't lock the screen on either so are probably not terribly useful without an actual dock.
If I can decipher the decompiled smali code some more, I'll replace the "Search" icon with a "Music" one. Changing the app an icon runs is easy, implementing it when it's not already doing something is less so.
I had a problem after rooting my nook touch where the no keyboard was capable of displaying a suggestions bar. Word predictions, dictionaries, etc. have no problem and if set to automatically choose the first prediction, it would work fine as 'auto text prediction'. I've tried about 10 different keyboards/input methods and they all seem to work except the suggestion bar is gone from all of them. This is regardless of which application or application settings.
The main problem with this is, the first prediction isn't always the right one, and it makes 9 key keyboards impossible, as well as any non romanized language (particularly Chinese which depends on the bar to choose the correct character).
So, I'm wondering what in the firmware could cause this effect, and is there any thing I can do to patch it?
My device details:
Rooted nook simple touch (touchnooter) running on 1.1 firmware with android 2.1.
The keyboards were installed (as required) to system/app by installing to data/app and then copying the apk into system/app and rebooting. This is necessary supposedly for the nook touch as the keyboard settings screen is absent (the normal android settings menu has been totally replaced with the nook one) and default keyboard must be set by another application which requires the apk to be in the systems directory.
Hopefully there is some android guru's out there who can figure out what may have caused this weird problem. Thanks!!
Here are some pictures to illustrate:

Has anyone else encountered this with the latest Google App update?
In the Google Feed, there are sometimes lists of related news stories that you have to swipe horizontally to scroll through. But, I use Action Launcher with the Google Plugin, which allows you to access the Google Feed by swiping to the left. If I try to swipe left on these story feeds, it just swipes back to my home screen, now. And if I swipe right, it dismisses it.
In the past, there was an arrow you could tap (circled below) that would allow you to activate this scroll. But, it's gone now. Same result in Lawn Chair and even Google Now Launchers. Anyone know if there is some kind of setting that would fix this? Thanks in advance!

Same issue
I'm having exactly the same issue with the stock launcher (google now launcher) on the Moto G5 Plus. I found that if you explicitly start Google Now as an app, the horizontal swipe works fine even though the left/right arrows don't appear.

Thanks for the reply. Hmm, not the most ideal solution, but I guess it's better than nothing. Thanks!
Hello, I am new here and am absolutely not a developer.
My company has bought a year ago 1K tablets from a vendor in SZ.
The tablets have installed a developed application by a third party for elderly which requires that the tablet screen will be ON 24/7 and constantly on a charger. The application manages to adjust the screen brightness during the evening/night.
Now after 15 months we experience that tablets are coming back with a strange screen behavior.
Screen is ON constantly
Pressing shortly twice the ON/OFF button the screen goes OFF and returns ON with horizontal lines but the touch functionality in tact.
Turning OFF the screen (press ON/OFF button shortly once) for 20 seconds and then turn ON the screen again, these lines are gone.
When you repeat the first step turning OFF and ON the screen, the vertical (blurred) lines returning.
I have tried many things.
Flashing the firmware using flashtool in different settings (we have the firmware).
The factory can reproduce the issue, but is reluctant to find a proper solution.
I would like to be in touch with an engineer / developer who would be able to helps us out.
We can sent some tablets for examination or just the firmware files.
I am reaching out on this forum hoping on some positive response.
Thank you for reading,
Best Regards,
Jan

Hey everyone, im always caught up trying to help old people with their phone. I feel like UI are designed to be unusable for logical people or those unfamiliar with the main function of everything being so discrete in view its effectively hidden or for first time users is represented By a sometimes unstandardized iconography. Anyway... can you help me out. One of the main issues is how every app opens to what you were doing last time pressing the icon. 90% of the time this is infuriating and gets older people lost. They usually have a different reason each time to use any app or access any feature, so going back to where they were last time makes the process of using their phone always different and unpredictable if they cant remember the fuk.. so every button press effectively dumps them somewhere different. They dont have a picture of order in their mind like me of what they will find a step back as the are often just stumbling forward. So the back button is confusing in general and home takes them right out and any app takes them right back to 4 steps ahead. Is there an over riding setting to make every app, even settings, messages anything and everything... when pressing the icon it starts fresh step 1. Probably better on RAM too. It has to exist or a front end dev needs stranglature. THANKS!
Elder people should use a phone with /e/OS pre-installed.
