Bootloop upon flashing Open Gapps in CyanogenMod 13 - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello!
I could not find any other threads related to this issue, so my apologies if this is a "duplicate" thread
So I found my old Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 (Model GT-P5113 in Samsung ROM, identified as Galaxy Tab 2 in CyanogenMod) in a cabinet doing nothing, so I thought I would flash CyanogenMod on it and get some use out of it. And so I did; I flashed the nightly build of CM 13 in the "espresso wifi" image. Now, that worked just fine, but when I tried to flash open gapps (open_gapps-arm-6.0-nano-20161217.zip to be exact), I got some sort of boot loop; the device starts and gets into the App Preparer thing (pardon my ignorance) and begins preparing the google apps, and once it does all 16 apps, it starts preparing some other cyanogen mod apps, or at least I believe they are cyanogen mod apps, and then the app preparer just closes, and the boot animation restarts. If I wait long enough, it will once again get to the app preparer and begin flashing 2 apps, I could not see the first one, and the 2nd was the Google app. It would then begin flashing the cyanogen mod apps and then it would close, and the cycle would restart. I flashed Gapps right after flashing cyanogenmod; I did NOT boot into the rom upon installing open gapps. Does anyone know how to resolve this issue? I will provide more information if it is needed. All help is appreciated.

You should only flash gapps RIGHT AFTER you flash CM13. If you flashed it after Cm13 boots up, you will face some issues. (Like bootloops, force closes, etc)

Hi, Lightracer, thanks for the reply! I did not boot up the tablet after installing CyanogenMod; however the same result occurs whether I flash it with or without a boot up in between (I needed to reflash CM multiple times)

What recovery are you using? Are you sure you're flashig the right opengapps package? (6.0 nano/pico work just fine)

Yes, I am using the right package; arm 6.0 nano with TWRP recovery

What happens if you let it complete rebuilding the ART cache (app preparer)? Does it do that everytime? Also, did you do a clean flash? (Wiping System, data, cache, art cache, and then flashing the rom? I never had issues like that with installing gapps :silly:

TWRP version 2.8.5.0 (I apologize, I would have said this in the above post, however, I was not home at the time so I was unsure)

thats the cause of your problem. wrong twrp version. go to andi34.github.io and download the latest common twrp (3.0.2-8). choose the zip. you can install it with your current twrp. then reboot back into recovery and reinstall rom and gapps.

That worked, thanks! I was initially following CyanogenMod's guide for the specific Galaxy Tab 2 Models (P5100,P5110/P5113), which included older CM images and the older TWRP, but flashed the espresso wifi image upon realizing that the guide was out of date. Also, the newest version of TWRP I could find for the Galaxy Tab 2 was version 3.0.0.0, but it still worked fine.
Thanks to everyone who participated in this thread!

You could download the common twrp which works for every samsung galaxy tab 2 model. The newest version is 3.0.2-8 which is found on andi34.github.io under recoveries. This could be useful if you want to flash newer roms.

Comming from paranoid, I suggest first to back up apps data and wipe caches before the flashing the Rom .
You should not have any issues there after but if any, the wipe data and flash Rom and pa gapps

Ok for some reason, gapps updated and then it said that it has to install so it rebooted me into recovery and it started to install but it said that there was an error in the rom manager script or something like that. So I just got fed up and restored my backup that I had. So now I am back on stock. I want to install OmniROM though tomorrow.

Also will I be able to automatically update gapps once OmniROM boots because for some reason I cannot flash the latest version of gapps so I have to use an older version?

It's not that PA doesn't work with CWM, just the ota app.
OmniROM requires twrp or CWM-based recovery. Not CWM itself if I recall.
You also have zero reason to install those gapps updates on either rom..
Gapps are updated automatically through the play store.

Wipe only /system partition. This prevents backup script that applied by GApps package that you have installed before.
For GApps, are you using parameters or additional scripts when installing GApps? Maybe you should remove all parameters before installing GApps. Parameters/scripts save their backup scripts, so if you dirty flash the ROM, the backup script will be executed first.

So basically what you're saying is that I go to twrp (wipe only system partition, flash the nightly file and reboot)? What about the gapps? Wouldn't it wipe the ROM and the gapps files?
Anyways I flashed the gapps the normal way after flashing the ROM file. I tried flashing the whole thing again though, made the nandroid backup, then in twrp tried flashing it the failproof method (wiping cahce/dalvik/data and SYSTEM), flashed the cm12.1 nightly file and one other gapps 5.1 file (not the one I flashed earlier) it got booted fine, I did get my gallery and trebuchet settings back. But the on screen nav and other various features are still missing. I even tried searching the on screen nav buttons in settings, it does appear but when I touch it, it takes me to the buttons settings and there is no setting called on screen nav .

get the update from cm site, and a lollipop gapps. wipe cache, dalvic cache, and system only in advanced menu, then flash rom and gapps.
no data will be lost. make a backup first, in case there is a problem.

really nothing will change by doing it the way i said, unless you made a bunch of system mods.
you can try it your way, it may work.
my way just gives you a clean system, so there is no chance of conflict with the old gapps that dont work properly.

But after booting all the google apps(play services, google now etc etc)started crashing one after the another and none of them are actually installed. Just icons are there in the place and when you click on them, it says 'app not installed'. Everything except google apps seem fine. I couldn't access twrp recovery either so couldn't restore the Nand backup .While booting into recovery,it is stuck at twrp logo and no progress further. At last I had to flash the stock through flashtool. That went alright but again I'm back on square one!

Okay, ler's walk through it step by step. Maybe we can get it working.
1) Flash TWRP again through that app you used.
2) Wipe system, data, cache and dalvik-cache
3) Flash CM12.1
4) Boot into system (might take 5-15 minutes)
5) After it booted up (and everything looks fine), reboot into recovery
6) Flash the opengapps zip
7) Boot into system and wait
(I normally flash system and gapps in one shot, but sometimes it creates errors, so try it separately)
Now it should work... Please tell if you encounter issues

Thanks for the help, but twrp becomes inaccessible once CM is installed. So I cannot flash anything further. Then my only option would be to use flashtool. It happened last time.
How do you fix this and what can I do to make sure twrp stays accessible?
Also, in advance wipe menu of twrp, there was a partition called 'Android Secure '. I didn't know what it was about, so left it intact along with internal and SD.What does this partition hold? Does it need to be wiped as well?
I did wipe system, data, cache and dalvik cache last time.

To acess twrp (not cm recovery) you should spam the volume UP key when you power up the phone, and led lights up.

Already tried that. All I'm getting is twrp logo screen. The screen flashes in about every two seconds. No progress from there.
I also tried rebooting into recovery using CM advanced reboot option.Result is the same.
Before installing CM, twrp was working fine and I could easily boot into recovery.

Tried that too.I couldn't get that app to work in CM. It shows installation error.
I'll just try again with the latest twrp version and different zips and see how it goes. Hopefully I'll get it right this time. [emoji4]

I can help you my friend!
Firsly, Android 5.1 (CM12.1) is outdated. You can find Android 6.0 on these forums.
1. Download Android 6.0 to your phone.
Stryflex ROM or Cyanogenmod 13 or whatever ROM you like, search this forum, those two I tried.
2. Download AGapps (these will work).
3. Install TWRP. This app works when already in Cyanogenmod.
4. Go to recovery, wipe system,data,cache...everything except internalSD (that's where Android 6.0 and gapps zip is).
5. Flash Cyanogemod 13 or Stryflex.
6. Flash Gapps.
7. Reboot.
And Android 6.0 is really miles better than stock. Once you try this, you just can't go back.

Judging from the first two posts, you don't have a SELinux-compatible recovery.
I flashed CM like this
-rooted the phone
-installed a recovery with Rachit Rawat's windows installer (@corphish's app works as well)
-flashed a kernel that comes with a recovery installed (I personally use Vengeance r1 since it's the most up-to-date for stock)
-got the CM and gApp zip files on the phone, wiped everything and installed just CM
Then I flashed the TWRP recovery through the terminal that comes with CM..and then I wiped everything again, just in case something had gone wrong during the previous install. This time I installed both CM and the gapps, and everything worked just right.
