I'm so sad now... after comparing the DAC quality to the old Moto G - Moto G4 Plus Guides, News, & Discussion

yea well,
I don't know how it seems not to be an issue for most people ... I have used the old Moto G (1. Gen, XT1032) for years and, now, decided to upgrade to the new and way more sophisticated G4 Plus (XT1642). I have to say I love the phone in pretty much all regards, but this one major drawback is just making me sad. It's not possible to listen to music on it anymore (using the audio jack) once you compare it to the good old Moto G.
The DAC quality just went as bad as cheap Samsung phones, in my opinion.
If there is anyone here with an old Moto G at home, just try it. Use the same source & headphones (e.g. Jaya the Cat - Blur). The difference is unbelievable. One enters into another (music) world listening on the Moto G. The G4 Plus just doesn't sound pleasant at all...

Consider getting a good pair of bluetooth headphones with aptx support.

You can turn the awful response to a GREAT sound using viper4android. You will need to root the phone, install TWRP and several zip files and do some configuration in order to make it work (installing drivers and enabling the dsp is not enough to make it process the audio). There is a guide to the installation process for our phones (make moto g4 plus viper4andoid scream or similar)

Spotify is a bad example, because the free version is highly compressed (lossy).
I am not sure why people use phones for music, it is not how real music should be listened. Get an external DAC and use only FLAC files.
However, I agree that a pair of GOOD Bluetooth headphones, with AptX support might be better, and only because Qualcomm included AptX support in their Snapdragon the MotoG4Plus has AptX. Today's Moto by Lenovo doesn't even know if their phones support AptX, last time they checked that on the MotoX and MotoG first gen, when Motorola cared about their brand:
https://www.aptx.com/products?field...d_product_brand_tid=2&field_aptx_type_tid=All

You can use an USB DAC with an OTG cable.

Yes, these would be the options...
Just sad, as I already have expensive Headphones and don't like to use an external DAC. I wonder, why the DAC of the Moto G so awesome sounds? You should really test it, it's an amazing difference...
Does anyone know by chance which DAC chip they built into this old Moto G?

What audio app are you using? I get the opposite when I use Google play music. I make sure it is downloaded before I play it. I have found it is nearly the same or a little better with the new G4. I have the regular G4. If you are using Pandora or Spotify they are not good for audio quality so I wouldn't assume they would be good baseline.
Make sure it's not downloaded to an SD. Has caused me issues when I did so I have to use internal storage. Latency issues.
Personally I use my ear pods from my old IPhone and it works good. Bluetooth never sounds right and any headphones that cost more than $10 aren't worth it to me. If your really concerned then I would recommend an iPod and not use your phone.

Try the nougat soak test once, there is a significant increase in audio quality..currently only Custom ROMs having the new audio quality are 7.1 ROMs by vache and shreps.

I'm using PowerAmp music player and I found it is great (my only option from a lot of players). So I bought it. I suggest you try that once. Moto G4 Plus is my first from the brand so IDK about previous generations. Also n7 Music player is also nice but it needs a lot of internal memory for album artwork. The inbuilt Audio Effects app sucks and it feels cheap. Coming from a Music phone (Xperia) to Moto is really disappointing. It's all Google and Lenovo now.

I have no issues on my moto g4 plus . I am quite particular about clear sound too . I have found it to be just nice . So far only tested it with online radio. Streaming for 94.3 Bangalore as well as Mumbai on 1cast.in .Sounds excellent . I connect the phone to my pre amp which is is also connected to an amplifier with the phono to rca cable . Of course it's like vintage audio stereo system with vintage speakers too . Sound is excellent . clear clear like a 192 Kbps feel but it might probably be 128kbps cause usually online radio stations give u that .
I even compared it with my IPhone 6s on the same stereo system . I did not find any noticeable difference maybe the iphone is 2% clearer but I don't notice it at all . .
I also have the moto g2 . Will compare that too since some people here say their old moto g seemed better regarding quality of output
In short I think the moto g4 plus has a good sound output . I wish I knew the specs like what sound card is in if it has 3dac or not like the iPhone 6s

Maybe your phone is damaged.
I compared my Moto g4 with a DVD-a player. Used the same file of a dsd track. Connected the phone to the amp via RCA. No difference.

Mi 4C Sound Quality

Has someone tested the audio quality of the Mi 4C?
I mean the earphones one during call and with music.
I would like to know if it is comparable with Htc One M8...
Thanks!
not tested the earphones, but the built-in speakers are very loud!!
Thank you kelkelkel, could you please tell me when you'll try the headphones?

Stereo or mono speaker?
Speaker or Headphones?
The mi4c has superb sound. My headphones (beyerdynamic tp51p) really become alive. You'll not be dissapointed.
Finally I've tested the phone and the audio is low and poor, in my opinion.
I've tried three pairs of earphones. I think it is worse than my old Moto G 2013.
Anyway installing Cyanogenmod the volume is good and the sound is more crystalline.
So the problem is the Miui software...
We are still very far from the quality of HTC or even iphone.
Equalizer, earphones enhancing are honestly not very useful. In Cyanogenmod instead the equalizer runs well.
Anyway the price of the phone is very good but I can not recommend the purchase to audiophiles users or those who want a particular quality of listening .

Stock? I've haven't found any earphones in the box.
Did you try to ear from Htc, S6 or iPhone? It is very different, I repeat, this is my opinion!
Didn't you noticed that the max volume is low yet?
I tend to agree with @HarryCustom, max sound quality is so so under miui even with the enhancements. No contest compared to my M8, both speakers or headphone. Waiting for sound mods when available since I have rooted it already.

I've installed that rom, but I think the mod is not working, the audio is low yet.
It was a problem anyway because I've decided to use Cyanogenmod, in my opinion is more stable than Miui...

Is that miui build more stable than the default Chinese one?
I am Italian, so I've received the phone with a modded stable rom with plenty of bloatware.
So I've flashed the Miui.eu rom and cooked Smiui.
I think all the roms are immature, but this a common problem when you buy a new android phone.
I've tested both Miui and Cyanogenmod for a week. In my opinion there are not so much difference in stability.
But maybe I excedeed saying that the other one is more stable, to tell the truth te only sure thing is that I think Cyano fits better for me.
I am sure only about one thing the sound is different and better with Cyanogenmod...
Are there any apps in the play store that can change the sound quality? Sounds like it has a lot of bass
Hi you can try Eizo Noozxoide, in my opinion is the best audio adjustment app.
Anyway if the audio is poor, is poor...

Here are some actual values for the Mi4C (Running the Chinese version of MIUI) and iPhone 6s, and as you can see they perform practically the same, but the iPhone is louder (not shown here) and the stereo crosstalk with Headphones attached is more than a bit disappointing. How is the sound better with CyanogenMod? In what way? Can you hear more distortion or worse dynamic range in compared to other phones? I'm waiting for my Mi4C to arrive, and I'm somewhat the audiophile (though that's not why I bought this phone, it just has the least amount of compromises for the price).

Hi xdadevet and sorry for my terrible English, I am not an audiophile, not at all. I tried both on Miui.eu, the last rom available, and Smiu with volume boost patch (that seems to be not useful) and I noticed more distortion and worse dynamic range than on CM12.1 Alpha.
Maybe my phone has some issues, but this is what I've noticed. It's not very difficult to understand that, I can't need to be an audiophile to say it: for expample on both miui I can keep the headphones in my ears even with the maximum volume and, the sound is distorted , unclean and weak. On CM the sound is crystal clear , the equalizer works well and the phone sounds a little better than my old Moto G (always on CyanogenMod), at maximum volume I'm forced to take off the headphones. I was hoping that the Mi 4C sounded better anyway!
Using the sound enhancement by Xioami (all the profiles are for Xiaomi earphone, any other earbud has to use the general one ) ths situation is the same, you can ear a bit better, but volume and distortion are the same. I've tried a pair of Blox, Edifier H110 and Baldoor E100.
Maybe with another type of headphones you can change the situation, but I think there are some problems in Miui management of audio, as the sound quality has to be the same on CyanogenMod.
To conclude, we are very far from HTC , just yesterday I made a comparison between listening Mi4c with CM and an One M7 , I'm sorry , there is no comparison...
The rear speaker instead is good, better than other phones even if the phone is resting on a table.
I hope new roms could solve this issue and also the touch one.

Still a good choice in 2016?

Been using the moto x 2013 for some time now and its just about perfect. I dont game, my use is heavy on web, text. The problem with my X is that the microphone doesnt seem to work anymore, I have to carry a wired or bluetooth to talk on the phone...which is a pain.
I want something small, similar in size, to replace it. Ive narrowed it down to a S4 or LG G2. Which would you guys recommend? Anyone else make a move from the X 2013 to one of these models?
Thanks,
Mario
If it is bought new, sure. But second hand you can get more recent models at the same prices.
Based solely on the specs, I would go for the G2. When I'm looking for a phone the first thing I look at is the performance, and, looking at the hardware, the G2 is better equipped than the S4. But this is just on paper.
For all I know, the real world performance may be the same.
I am satisfied with the S4
Thanks. Yeah either the G2 or S4 new is what I want, just curious to hear what folks think getting a 2.5 year old device. Id get a new flagship but all of them are just too big.
Get the snapdragon variant. The exynos overheats
S4 is still a very good phone: it can run without problems marshmallow custom roms and you can play on it big games like fifa 16 or asphalt. But if you want a good new phone and almost same dimensions like s4, I recommand OnePlus X.
I don't think S4 will be a good idea now. I had both versions (GT-I9500 and GT-I9505) before I moved for Xperia Z3 D6643. Unfortunately, I have damaged my Z3 and until it got fixed, I will be using the GT-i9505 again.
This phone is driving me crazy, even with max brightness, it's impossible (looks like a black screen) to use it under sunligh. 3G, and 4G (not to talk about GPS) data drains a huge % of battery, average screen on time is about 3-3,5h, no battery optmizations.
The Z3 (5.2") and Z3 compact (4.6") are the best options when talking about cost x benefit. Almost 10h screen on time and +800h standby time.
Thanks all. I kept looking and looking for new S4 or g2 but everything out on the Bay was new "other" or sellers with tons of negative feedback. Lots of positive but also much negative. I just saw no trusty sellers. Ended up pulling trigger on oneplus x. Now the wait for it begins. Hope oxygen is decent.

run very very good i have add the QI modul and it run official rom until custome have no bug ( zero bug ) actualy custom rom have some BT problem and i use My S4 with my smart watch here why BT are important now if you see forum you have big chois of rom ( custom ) and all tested and run very very well on S4 personaly i change phone until S4 are dead hahaha but LG have an Good support in my watch runing official 6.0 firmware LG give quicly update whet are roling out but samsung are still on 5.0.1 bad guys samsung
@spawk
Samsung has it's own update cycle. Most flagships get support from Samsung up to 2 years after released.
And, in 2016, Galaxy S4 won't be supported anymore.

The Only thing that is extremely bad about i9505 is its sound quality in earphones. On gsmarena u will see they will say it has best audio quality but in reality its far far away from the best its so flat and dumb.Even all the chinese phones sound better than it there is literally no bass at all in the sound and if u increase it by an equalizer the volume decreases alot.
You could also try i9506 S4 LTE+/LTE A
Ive been using this device for a long time now. Recently broke my galaxy note 3's lcd and sold my lg g2. Back on my i9506 and still good. Its not far with g2 in terms performance. Although I use 2 batteries on my i9506 but hey, great device

Sound quality depends a lot on the headphones. I hardly think that in-ear ear buds are great at producing bass.
Let's not forget about the song quality too. Anything with a bitrate lower than 320KBPS will have its quality reduced. So always go for 320 or FLAC.
It can have the best sound chip in the world if the headphones are garbage and the music file has static noise.

There are always better devices. My 2 other devices (An ZTE Blade and LG P350) sound crappy compared to my S4.
That's why there are mods like viper4android. With the right setup you can get nice bass.
Besides, stuff like this is just a preference. I, for instance, don't like heavy basses. I like to listen to the music, not the "boom boom" sound of the bass.

I Dont like much bass either but the sound of i9505 compared to Sony Xperia Z2,Galaxy Grand Prime,Galaxy J5,Galaxy Ace 3 and the desktop computer is really flat and lacking.I can hear more elements in even samsungs lowest end phones than i9505 using the same earphones
Stay away from S4.
- Lollipop roms are okay but not very fast.
- Exynos AND snapdragon can overheat actually depends on the kernel.
- microphone distortion (personally) which I can hear as I play back the call recording
- not as fast or smooth as I expected for quad core when I previously had S5 mini
- Sometimes run out of ram but not too often
Generally just don't expect much. The specs look really good on paper but it's actually not that good a phone.
The screen resolution is very high which is nice.
Camera quality / focus is average as well. Slow to focus. Quality average.
I suggest buy 2nd hand used S5 or S6.
Unfortunately no S6 mini.
@fatjoez
1. Really? 5.1.1 is okay for me.
2. I've a device with Intel processor and it does the same thing. In short: All CPUs could overheat.
3. -skipped-
4. Blame Samsung's policies.
5. I'm only felt it on TW ROMs.
And no, I won't buy Exynos devices. Devices with Snapdragon SOCs are the best choice.
But, it's up to you. I couldn't interfere your mind.

Well I bought a oneplus x. Been using it for one day and I'm not sure about it. Works OK. Speed us good but it's just too big. I just wish I could find a phone the same size as the 2013 moto x. Now I'm thinking either a S4 or Z5 compact. :/

Xperia XZ Audio Capabilities? Hi-Fi

Hello XZ owners!
I was wondering what the quality of the DAC is on this phone?
I'm looking for phones that have good quality sound/DAC like the axon 7 that doesn't require me to tweak with Viper.
I like the XZ because it's water resistant, micro SD, and allegedly has hi-fi DAC. And Sony is apparently somewhat dev friendly.
Considering selling my OnePlus 3 for this phone, or picking it up as a phone to take out on the weekends.
Any feedback is appreciated.
For me sound quality is as good as it should be. But sound is very subiective, i would recomend to take ur faverite music(flac or what ever format u prefer) on sd card, ur hf and go to retail store which is offering sony and try it by your self. I persoally didnt herd better music like xperia xz and sony mdr-zx770bn, aptx compression is what needed.
Well the volume is not the highest, quality wise its ok but not the best also, its not on the iPhone level lets say. But I'm no sound expert by any means, I'm just comparing sound on the same ear/headphones.
I believe Samsung, LG and HTC have better sound, but its been a while since I used them so I'm not sure.
I would say that since the Nougat Update its very good ! Im using Shure SE215 and I hear no hiss at all (Before Update a bit, after the update none (if only music is played )). Im also owning the A35 Walkman from Sony and I would say that the XZ is very good if you think about it as a Phone and not as a DAP, as a DAP It would be still very nice !

I don't mean to be disrespectful in anyway, but i think the consensus is HTC and LG have much better DAC than Samsung. It's somewhat subjective, but when you compare the v20 and HTC 10 and AXON 7, they have the best sound on flagship phones lately. Thanks for your input ?

Sound Quality

Ok, so I have an LG V20 with built in quad DAC and Dolby atmos installed. I used the wired head phones that came with the V20 (B&O) which are maybe a little better than mediocre. The quad DAC works only with wired head phones. (yes there is a way around that, but I didn't do it) My LG Bluetooth platinum head phones sound better than the B&O, but then the quad DAC doesn't kick in on the V20.
I'm using Poweraudio Free for a music player. There are no ads and I don't see much difference between free and pro. (If I keep it, I'll buy the pro)
I first got the sound level of each phone as close together as I could.
To get close to the sound of the V20, I first selected in moto audio "music" and "flat". I then chose the Rock setting from the Poweraudio list of presets, then bumped up the 60 hz and 230 hz setting in the equalizer. I then increased bassboost to 4.8 and virtualizer to 6.6.
I played a song from Black Sabbath's 13 album which is fairly new so the recording quality is good. It is also heavy on bass and guitar.
Results: Very, very close. The V20 sounded a little more open, probably because of the Atmos app, and the Stylus sounded a little cleaner. Overall, hardly any difference.
Much better headphones may yield different results, but I won't be buying any of those. Cheaper head phones you might not be able to tell any difference. The bottom line is that the stylus has very good sound.
Edit: I did a Bluetooth comparison. I had to bump the the 60 hz and 230 hz back down, reduce bassboost to 4.2 and virtualizer up to 7.0 to get a similar sound. The V20 was a little more "open", but the Stylus was very close. Whenever the gym opens back up and I'm there doing a workout, I'll never know the difference. $800 phone 3 years ago versus a $300 phone now.
A DAC aware music player, and a USB-C DAC dongle of course, with wired headphones are the best combination I've found. As to music players that are DAC aware and will directly drive your dongle, bypassing the limitations of the Android Audio stack, HibyMusic is free and sounds good. I strongly dislike the interface. Neutron is a bit pricey but has a decent interface and is what I currently use. Onkyo has a paid version that is DAC aware but I've not tried that one. FiiO is free and should work as well, but again, I've not tried it.
A DAC will do a lot for your music and is worth the extra bulk and hassle.

A good news: Dolby now can be disabled with USB C digital headphones. It gives 100% unaltered audio
