Before I begin let me say, I am not suggesting anyone try this, I am simply looking for persons with similar experiences.
I recently had my phone become a brick while trying to flash and RUU with S-On. Luckily it was still under warranty and HTC advised me to send it to them, even though I reside in Jamaica, and the phone was bought from AT&T.
Once i got back the phone however I realized everything was upgraded and I was simply happy to have my phone back after about 3 weeks.
Within hours of receiving it I set out to gain root, unlock the bootloader, and get S-Off, so I could restore all the backups I had made. All in all I lost only a few hours of data thanks to my routine.
After installing the latest CM10.1 (built from source) and installing it, I came to realize, I would need to downgrade the touchpanel, which after my previous ordeal, I was (and still am) a bit skeptical about doing.
So I flashed an RUU and went back to AT&T stock.
After playing around with it a bit I was reminded of why I hated the AT&T stock rom. Wifi hot spot doesnt work by default.
So no for the point of all this....
I downloaded the ota from the thread here on XDA and tried to flash it how I would do it with CM.
This thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2119610 to be specific, v3.17.708.5.
As most people would figure, that didnt quite work out.
So I
extracted the contents of the zip file
restructured the folder contents to resemble the a CM update package
extract the boot.img file to the root of the folder
modified the 'update-script' to remove the assertions and flash the boot.img
Signed it with AutoUpdateCreator
This worked fine and now I am able to use the device as freely as I would like.
My data connection (wifi and H+) seem to 'take a short break' now and then, but I also noticed this while using the stock AT&T rom, but this may all just be in my head...lol
My question is, has anyone else tried this and what issues have you encountered?
i just dont understand why youd do this when flashing an ota the traditional way is much faster..

I was hoping to avoid flashing the radio and other partitions.
Figured it would be safest way to change the os itself.
OK, so I've got a totally stock ROM and I've unlocked the bootloader, put TWRP custom recovery on and rooted mt Nexus 5 and all is going well.
The only thing is I know there is at least one OTA update and because of the changes I've made I cannot get them.
Try as I might, I cannot find anywhere to download the OTAs and flash them manually. I have seen this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47128349&posted=1#post47128349 which says it lists the updates available but it makes no mention of which one I need or if I need both of them or which order to do them in if I need to install them all.
Can anyone help? I've been doing this since Eclair and have installed many custom ROMS on many different phones but this is the first time I've come up against something I need some help with.
If someone can point me in the right direction I'd be very grateful.
Cheers.
hi guys,
i read somewhere in this site that you have to unroot to get the 4.4.1 OTA... does this mean that stock android will never get updated?...or is this update not officially launched by google to the masses but just to the developers? pls im new to android and would like to know what the deal is here.
also i have no problem unrooting but i heard that you will stop getting OTA's and will have to side load all new updates everytime and you will also void your warranty...which im in two minds about
No you dont need to be unrooted to update your android version.
You need to have the stock recovery and rom. The update isnt available for everyone yet
you will get a update notification just wait

You technically voided your warranty when you rooted. But no big deal.
You can download the update and sideload on your own, or wait for the OTA to come to you. If all you have is root, stock recovery and no system mods it will update on its own.

Hi do not worry. Those posts really do not apply to you yet. You have a phone that is stock meaning, you bought it and using it. If you keep it like that you never have to worry about update. Google will automatically push the update to your phone by next week. Incidentally the phone is also a developer phone, so people usually play around with it. Root, custom roms, kernels etc. Now for these enthusiasts to get the update, they have to unroot, ,to stock just like your phone. After getting the update they will start messing with it again:laugh: this forum being the developers forum of the Internet is the reason why you are seeing all those posts.
Now you are sitting on a Ferrari phone, using it as a Honda. Some day in the future you will let it run at indy500

Did you mean to ask "do you need to root to get the 4.4.1 OTA"?? If not, your question doesn't seem to add up....
You definitely do NOT need to root to get the OTA. You can wait for the update to be pushed out, or, if you are impatient, you can sideload using ADB or install from recovery.
If you are rooted, as the other folks explained, you may need to get back to stock before you can install 4.4.1
To add to this, I only rooted my Nexus 5 so I could use BetterBatteryStats and some other monitoring apps. Is there any way to go back from TWRP to stock recovery without wiping data/losing root?
I'm quite happy with everything stock and don't plan on doing any mods.
Also, I sideloaded 4.4.1, but would I have gotten the OTA with TWRP?

Yes, get the recovery.img from the factory image and: fastboot flash recovery recovery.img. That'll put the stock recovery back on your device

Q: I have don't have the AT&T specific LG G2 (D800)...
A: Don't finish your question... this FAQ doesn't apply to you.
Q: Why won't my phone update?
A: Because your question doesn't include enough information.
Q: My phone currently is currently rooted (and may have been modified); can I update to kitkat (and retain root)?
A: Maybe, but maybe not. You are probably better off doing the procedure (found in another thread) to restore your phone to stock, using ioroot22 (or a more recent version)(found in yet another thread) to root it, but NOT make any other modifications. Then allow the 10o and 10q updates to apply. Then kitkat should apply and leave root intact.
Q: I read the previous answer - where are those other threads?
A: They can be found by searching, looking for stickies, etc. Hint: "ioroot22" is a good search term if looking for "ioroot22." To find a thread about restoring a phone to stock, "restore to stock" might be a great search term.
Q: Why are you calling it "firmware" and not "ROM"?
A: "ROM" stands for "read only memory." The fact that it can be updated (and easily modified) means that it's not ROM.
Q: How to I know which version of the firmware I have?
A: Settings->"About Phone"->"Software Information"->"Software version"
Q: My phone currently has a stock D80010d image. How can I update?
A: You need D80010q to update. First update to 10o, then see the next question.
Q: My phone currently has a stock D80010o image. How can I update?
A: You need to allow it to update to 10q first. kitkat doesn't seem to apply to anything other than 10q. Then see the next question.
Q: I currently have a stock D80010{d|o|q} image, but "update software" tells me there are no other updates. What do I do?
A: Annoy AT&T. If the first tech tells you that they can't push an update, thank them, hang up, and call back.
Q: "update software" tells me to try again in xx hours. I'm impatient. What do I do?
A: Change your time/date settings to manual, and step into the future (adjust the date.)
Q: What about "xposed framework"?
A: It doesn't work (yet.) rovo89 has fixes pending for the next release.
Q: I'm not currently using an AT&T tower (roaming) or I'm using a non-AT&T SIM. How do I update?
A: You don't. People have tried, but no one has been successful when roaming or using a non-AT&T SIM.
Q: How can I install the update without having AT&T's network push it to me?
A: No one yet knows. We have the file that is being pushed, but no one has figured out how to get the phone to install it. (You can flash the entire firmware, however...)
Q: Is there any way to jump directly to kitkat without messing with updates?
A: Yes, but it comes with two warnings... First, it will basically "factory reset" your phone (meaning you'll lose all data, settings, etc.) Second, there's no known way to root the phone after following this procedure. So, if you're okay with what is basically a "factory reset" on your phone and with losing root, jump to the following thread complements of @bigfau: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2662445
UPDATE (2014-Feb-28): Thanks to @AndroidUser00110001, if you have an older firmware with a working custom recovery, you can download and install something that allows you to jump directly to "stock" kitkat _and_ optionally root the device at the same time. HOWEVER, this will still erase any custom recovery on your phone, erase any modifications you've made to your /system partition, etc. For more information, instructions, downloads, and questions, please follow this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2665391
Q: So, I have the new kitkat firmware, but I decided that I want to root my phone after all. What do I do?
A: You'll have to use one of the "restore to stock" procedures to get your phone back to 4.2.2 (D80010d or D80010o), root that, and then have the '10q' and '20c' updates pushed to your phone from AT&T.
Q: Does this firmware have carrier IQ?
A: Yes.
Q: Can carrier IQ be removed?
A: No, but...
Q: Can carrier IQ be disabled?
A: Yes: using "disable service" from the play store (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cn.wq.disableservice), swipe over the "system apps", select "android system" and deselect the checkbox for "IQService"
Q: How do I install a custom recovery (CWM/TWRP) or kernel with this firmware?
A: At the present time, you can't. LG updated the bootloader with this firmware to fix the "loki" exploit which was being used to install custom recoveries and kernels. Be assured, however, that there are multiple people trying to find a way around the security mechanisms anyway. Note that it's still possible to flash an older bootloader along with and older firmware. See the threads on "how to restore to stock."
Q: Why isn't there any custom firmware available based on this official release?
A: I'm sure people are working on it already. However, how would you like to install it? (See above question...) Without a custom recovery, it'd be very difficult to package anything so a typical user could install it. Not many people would be willing to walk a typical user through the process of remounting the system partition and overwriting files. (Anyone who would be fluent with doing that has probably already started customizing their own device.)
Q: I want an RD, RC, or Moderator to walk me through everything. What do I do?
A: Keep wanting.
Q: Why is the sky blue?
A: It's not. It only appears blue to you. It's actually red. However, because you've been told your entire life that it's blue, it's altered your perception of which color is which.
Q: Is this really a FAQ?
A: No. It's just some lines I put together while doing my real (paying) job. Every time my boss looks over my shoulder, I have to make up some lame excuse on why I'm "working" on my hobby instead of what I'm being paid for.
Take care
Gary

I doubt it can hurt, though people would be better off at this point flashing 10o, rooting, and then getting the updates pushed (so they retain root.)

@SuperSport explained it to me. If I get the D80010q .tot and flash it with Lg Tools, root, and then check for the update to D80020c. Hopefully root will still stick after Kit-Kat

best FAQ ever!
Thanks for the FAQ Gary! I am running stock d80010d, every time I check for software updates I get this message "Your Phone is not registered yet." I have called both AT&T and LG twice about this, and no one seems to know whats going on. Any ideas?

This is the answer to my question! Much Thanks brother!
Root didn't seem to survive update
I was on D80010o and rooted.
I chatted with AT&T rep and updated to D80010q and then D80020c (Kit Kat).
I tried updating my su binary and it fails.
Disable Service says I'm not root.
Has this happened to anyone? Is there a way to update SU?
Thanks

Your phone is no longer rooted. There's no way currently to root it. You can restore to D80010o, root the device, don't do anything else, and get AT&T to push the updates again.

Thanks!
So there's currently no actual way to disable carrier IQ without root right?

Apparently not. AT&T got wise to the previous little trick and buried that sucker good.
As longs as it isn't a buggy battery leech like the last version, I can live with it.
Has anyone outside the US without an AT&T SIM card been able to upgrade to AT&T's stock 4.4.2?
Thanks
I'm currently on NI1, and I just had a update notice. It's about 392mb in size. Didn't see anything about any updates so figured I'd post.
Did you take the update? Did it install? If so what is the firmware listed as?
Since it is 392mb I would assume it is an update, rather than a full version increment? Probably still 4.4.2 Let is know
It's almost done downloading now at 81%. I'll post back with a version once installed.
Are you rooted right now? If so it may not install, or try and fail. If you are rooted immediately after it finishes downloading you can copy the update file to your sdcard/external sdcard and upload it to a file sharing site. If it is in fact a newer version of firmware you could make devs happy. If you need to know how/where the update is located I can help you out
BEFORE IT INSTALLS open up a file browser (if rooted possibly) and navigate to \cache\fota\2400258.cfg. Should be the name or something similar. Long press on it and choose copy. Then navigate to you sdcard and paste it where you can find it. Then upload it to a sharing site.

Thanks, hopefully SOMEONE will pull it soon.
Yeah. Been having random issues with my phone since the previous. All seems to be good now. The update does add a few new programa. Nothing worth using except maybe keeper. But so far so good.
Phones definitely a lot snappier now.!
I would love to see a screenshot of the about to confirm.
There you go.
Update failed on my rooted device
I just tried it, It failed to update and I lost root.
Here is a screen of the few apps it put on once completed. It also added a kids mode app.
If ANYBODY is rooted it most likely WILL FAIL. It is only 300+ MB sobitbis not a complete ROM and most like just has mostly PATCH files inside. I would recommend users that are rooted WAIT until a dev can do something with it, and check it out. Each update has locked our phones down harder.
On that note if ANYONE is rooted and downloads it, do NOT install it. But go to the location I listed above to pull the file from the phone and upload it to a sharing site. Then a dev can look into it first and incorporate it for our rooted phones WITHOUT updating the bootloader
After looking around the forums it looks like Samsung has pushed a few updates to phones ( S4 getting 4.4.4, S3 4.4.2 patch files, and the Note has gotten an update as well). I think these updates are probably going to be the final updates before they phase out old devices and possibly start porting 5.0 on our device (S4). I really wish there wasn't new At&t bloat, but hopefully these are new services that phase out all the old outdated bloat At&t had in the past :good: also to each his own I just never use those apps.
Thanks for posting this, I would've enjoyed this if I hadn't already flashed Goldenfinger and nandroided all my apps over... to lazy to use Safestrap again.
DON'T INSTALL IF YOU'RE ROOTED!
Nice. Wasn't doubting the OP. I see att has updated their support page to reflect the NJ4 update.

If no one else does, I will try when I get to work tomorrow. We have numerous S4's that people traded in for the S5. I can see if I am able to root one and do the update using your instructions.
