Downloading photos from Gmail to Pixel appear to be low-resolution? - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

Hello,
I have been sending myself photos from computer to phone via gmail (over wi-fi), and have noticed on my Pixel they look to be low-resolution versions, yet the file size & info is the same as the full quality file. I'm opening them & looking at them from the Downloads folder. Zooming in on the image shows it to clearly have lost some detail. I was doing this with no issues on my Samsung Galaxy Alpha just weeks prior, and had not changed any settings (if any exist) on my Gmail.
Any ideas?

Can anyone replicate this?

[Q] Trouble syncing HD pictures in Google contacts

I couldn't find the answer to this question on xda or with a general web search so I hope it hasn't been addressed already.
From what I read Android now supports contact pictures up to 720X720 so I initially believed that if I uploaded a picture larger than that Google would size it accordingly, but that is not the case and when I wiped the phone and did a fresh ROM install they synced as grainy low res pictures. I then resized a few contact pictures to 720X720 and assigned them to the appropriate contacts using the Google mail website and then synced the phone but they sync as grainy low res pictures. So then I transferred the resized pictures to my phone, assigned the pictures to the contacts and tested the whole procedure again and the result is the same, a grainy low res picture.
So is there a setting or something I am missing or does Google still resize every contact picture to 96X96? This obviously isn't a huge deal but when a big ROM update comes I sometimes like to do a clean install rather than dirty flashing the new version but redoing all of my contact pictures makes it a huge pain.

Mass rename of local photos in Google Photos

I need to organise my photos. The way my camera app works is that it just uses the next available number (e.g. photo0001 photo0002 photo0003, etc) and just remembers the next number to use.
The issue with this is when you go back and delete photos, it leaves a blank "slot" (e.g. photo0008 photo0010 photo0011 photo0015, photos 9, 12, 13, and 14 were deleted), and if you ever reset your phone, the camera forgets and starts over from 0001, sees that number is already taken, and uses the next available number.
This results in your photos being in the correct order if you go by date taken, but a complete mess up you go by filename. I plan to fix this by using a mass-renamer that will rename them in order of date taken.
Issue with that is, I have no idea how Google Photos will handle this. It's suddenly going to see thousands of photos that are different from the version stored online (because their filenames now are different) and bundled of new photos which didn't exist before because they are existing photos that had their filename changed to one that wasn't in use before.
Will Google Photos be able to tell by performing some sort of visual check or using some sort of hash/checksum? Or is it just going to turn my album into a mess? What would be the best way to deal with this? I could turn off photo syncing, delete everything saved online, then re-enable it after I rename them, but that would mean I would have to re-upload all my photos and videos, my 64gb card is almost full and I am upgrading to 128, that would be a LOT of data to re-upload.

A few questions: Photo transfers & notifications

1. I've transferred a bunch of my pictures over to my Pixel, but some of the photos seem to be completely out of order. Is there any way to fix this? I'm assuming it's something with the metadata, but I'm far from an expert there... it's claiming all the photos are from "today". This is only in a few of my folders, my Instagram photos for instance seem to be in the proper order while others are a complete clusterf*ck.
2. Is it possible to curate what's in the main photo stream? I'm used to the main gallery on my previous phones being from the camera with the ability to have other folders. I'd rather not have dirty pictures showing up in my main stream, but it'd be nice to not have to use a third party gallery app.
3. I don't see notification counters on my apps like I did on my S6 Edge. Is that just a Pixel Launcher thing? Can that be changed?
Thanks

Novice Question about Google Photos

I own a Pixel 2 XL and I'm slightly confused by Google photos. When I'm in an area that I'm not connected to the internet, my pictures won't load. I can see like a low quality version of it, but the full resolution picture won't load unless I have an internet connection. Is there another gallery app I can download to view and edit my pictures in full resolution? I love everything about Google photos except for that one thing. Any tips are greatly appreciated, sorry for the noob question.
I'm fairly sure that's expected behavior. When your Photos are stored on the cloud only, you'll only see low-res versions that may be cached. Adding a gallery won't do much if the photos aren't stored locally.
If you really want a local gallery (I use one for local folders that never sync) I like QuickPic.
Are you using the "free up space" option? That deletes your photos from your phone; after that they can only be accessed via the internet. I don't use that feature (unless or until I'm desperate for more storage). To check, I just switched my Pixel 2 to airplane mode and was still able to access photos I've taken since I got this phone at full resolution.

[Solved] My pictures' thumbnails or previews do not match the actual photo.

Edit: Solved. If anyone's in the same situation, what worked for me is searching for .thumbnail folders (make sure "show hidden files" or similar is enabled in your file browser), and deleting their content. Google photos will then recreate the thumbnails when you next open it.
Hello friends.
Ever since a few days, I've been having the strangest of problems with my pixel 4xl under android 10:
Basically, the thumbnails or previews of my pictures do not match the picture itself.
For example, if I want to send an image to a whatsapp contact, or attach one to an email I'm composing or whatever, the preview or thumbnail that I'm shown is that of a much older and long deleted image. Pressing the miniature instantly shows me the correct picture, but if I press the back button, I'm again presented with something that had nothing to do with that particular photo.
Hope this makes sense.
This happens both in the Google photos app and third party apps such as whatsapp.
The only step I can think of doing to correct it is deleting storage and cache of my Media Storage, but that didn't help.
Can anyone shed some light on the matter?
Best regards!
