After seeing a lot of comparison videos of the HTC One m8 and the Galaxy S5 I realized one of the big things HTC has is their motion launch gestures. Unfortunately for HTC it is limited to doing just a few things. So since the Galaxy S5 has an OLED screen which is turned "off" when displaying black pixels, I figured I could create something like the motion launch gestures that uses minimal battery.
So I created Knockr an app that allows users with OLED Screen devices, like the Samsung Galaxy S5 and Moto X, to quickly enter an app with gestures without having to turn the screen on.
Gestures include:
Double Tap: Double tap the screen to open any app you choose or unlock the screen
Swipe Up, Down, Left, Right: Users can set each Swipe to open a separate app or unlock the screen
Long Press: Long press the screen to open any app you choose or unlock the screen
Volume Up when in Landscape: Pressing the volume up button when the device is in Landscape will automatically open the camera
I am still working on improving some of the things in Knockr, but wanted to post it on here to get some feedback and suggestions to make it better.
Download Here
**EDIT**
The newest update 2.1 now includes Knocks. Knocks is like LG's Knock Code. You can create multiple Knocks to unlock or open apps.

Going to give it a try with my Galaxy S4 Mini, I hope it's not too harsh on the battery. Nevertheless this application seems like a great idea, Thank you.
EDIT: Seems to work very well. Just a few things I noticed.
-The screen can turn on by a single touch to the screen (it will then display lockscreen)
-The backlight keys turn on after the app is activated once the screen is locked (the keys are only on for a few seconds on my phone anyway, no big deal)
-Is it possible to decrease the delay between when the phone is locked and when the Knockr app is loaded/active?

You said that this is for screens with OLED yet someone commented checking whether it would work with their S4 Mini. Now I thought that S4's had AMOLED which was different, if I'm mistaken, does this mean that it will work on my S4-19505?
Thanks, it looks brill by the way.
Nandish-
AM-(OLED) your device has an OLED display. It only works with OLED type screens cause they use no power to produce black screens.

Only one touch and the screen is awake to show the lock pattern on Samsung S4.
What an awesome app! My only recommendation is to take away the one tap to turn on the screen, as the screen can accidentally turn on in your pocket very easily and cause unwanted battery drain.

Thanks for the feedback. It shouldn't use much battery especially if you use the power management since you probably wont have your phone turned off to often outside of your pocket during the day and if you do you can just turn it over and still get the same benefit.
I have already uploaded a new version that has removed the single tap action so there aren't any false touches registered. It also made the screen on an option to choose for any of the gestures. It also fixes a bug that cause Knockr to close when the orientation was changed after being pocketed.
Unfortunately I don't think there is a way to load Knockr any faster since I already have it setup to load as fast as possible. The problem is that I have to use a broadcast receiver to receive the screen off and the broadcast takes a little bit of time to be sent out (I'll keep looking for ways to make it faster though).
Really cool app!
Few recommendations:
1. Any way to show clock and notifications every couple of seconds? (Ex 15s)
2. Way to bypass knockr when power button is pressed.
Thanks!

awesome app
awesome app.
but there is delay while unlocking phone (or performing any action while screen is locked).
i don't know it is because of my s3 or app
but cool idea.
one more suggestion screen should be unlocked after pressing power button.
mind blowing app.
works great.
thanks for this and keep going on.
it is really nice idea.
questions :
can it detect multi finger on screen off? we might get more gesture thts why only.
screen segmentation? means on some part of screen it detects then that gesture recognized.
just some ideas.
Awesome app. Just awesome. I didn't want to install a custom kernel just for this feature and now I don't have to. Working great at the moment. Power button is no use for unlocking but app is working with almost no hitch.
A suggestion for people who use this. Install screen on&off from play store and add that to nova launcher's double tap gesture to lock the screen. Now you can use double tap to both locking and unlocking.
Also, I have to swipe twice to open an app. Can't we do that with one swipe?
Edit: It opens with one swipe but it isn't always working. Needs some work.
Bug
found a bug :
proximity sensor always on for me on stock 4.4.2 Note 2 N7100.
whether i check power management or not.
App works on Galaxy S3, only that the proximity sensor thing for pockets, it isn't very accurate. I kinda cheated to test it, covered my sensor, then swiped left to try to launch camera, and it did. I didn't want my camera to be turned on and heating my phone in my pocket during school

I don't have a OLED lcd panel but I decided to try it. is it because I don't have a OLED panel that the screen shows black with 2 navigation buttons on it? And if that's the reason is there a way to make it work on TFT panels?
I am having this issue with my Verizon Moto X. Does it need any extra settings?
It installed on Galaxy Nexus (It is having SUPER AMOLED), when I double tap, screen wakes but shows black screen.
Cool app!
I can see navbar when i turn screen off though. And i can press power button and turn device off...
Im using a n7000 running Slimkat

Hey! This works very nicely! I'm having no problems so far. However, on my stock 4.4.2 Samsung Note 3 N900W8, I've noticed that if I have Multi Window on (use two apps at the same time), the multi window tab shows on the screen when Knockr becomes active. Specifically, I turn off my screen using the power button, and a second or two later the tab pops up. I don't know if this can be prevented without turning multi window off entirely, but thought I'd bring it up. Great app!
Hey guys, I recently took the update to the latest (and last) Android O beta and I've noticed that now I have to unlock my phone twice everytime to get into it. I use double tap to unlock my phone. On 7.1.2, I could double tap, then immediately swipe to be in the phone. Now when I double tap it just displays the time. I have to double tap again, then swipe to unlock it.
I feel like this is something simple that I'm missing in the settings to disable. I've played with the Display settings and haven't been able to figure it out.
Anybody know what I'm missing?

I use the finger print reader to unlock but mine worked as expected. Double-tap turned on the screen and my finger unlocked it. Now, it took three double-taps to wake the phone but that's a different conversation. [emoji52]

The 2 double taps being required is normal behavior sadly. I've seen no option to change this either. It's most likely to prevent accidental wakeups and so you don't fully wake your screen unintentionally when just looking at a notification to save power. :silly:

Normal for Android O? I didn't have to do that with M.
The power button only requires a single swipe and the finger scanner unlocks directly to the home screen. I lock and unlock my phone all day (at work). Usually it's on my desk, propped up with a kickstand case so double tapping is easiest for me. This is driving me crazy.

It drives me a bit nuts too but I'm pretty sure it's part of the new ambient display which is less useful than before, it hides the notifications as little dots after it initially goes away..

I believe that since google will be copying other guy having always on display,. This is the reason why the are doing this.
Always on display will be one of the pixel 2 main feature. They are probably testing to see how it works has a ambient notification. I like nougat notification better.
Yea, I'm not that impressed with O so far. Even if I turn off ambient, I still have to double tap twice. Good thing my bootloader is unlocked. I'll flash the patch for this the day someone releases it.

I find this phone great, the only thing that is bugging me is the position of the power button. It's so far up the right hand side I find it a pain to reach to (I always hold phone in my left hand). I would lock my old phone by using a gesture through Nova Launcher, but (I think because of a newer Android version) it is no longer possible to do that properly. It can only be done so that the phone is "Admin locked" and requires the pin to unlock (not face/fingerprint), or to turn the display black until it times out (which is supposed to be for 5 seconds but for some reason it takes the full normal timeout of 1 min).
Does anyone know of a way to lock the phone properly using anything other than the power button? (without root)
I know LG seem against remapping the assistant button, but one great option they could have would be to be able to swap round the power and assistant buttons
Not the right thread to ask in but you can turn on KnockON in General settings and thereafter double tapping on the notification bar will lock your phone.
Thanks for the tip.
Apologies for posting in the wrong place, I meant to do it in Q&A, somehow I messed up :/
Mods please feel free to delete/move this topic
You can also double tap any open space on the home screen to lock the phone. Same with the lock screen. Double tapping anywhere while display is off wakes it.
Hi to all of you... After five years of searching an app to turn screen off and lock without use of power button that will work with fingerprint and face I'd i finally found one to work great in playstore for free
For everyone that haven't noticed yet
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.redmanit.lockscreen
It works great with our device and other that I have test it like S10 series, A50, 70 series
Thanks for that link.
On a contrary quest:
I'm quite into the idea of a quick shortcut app that will keep the screen ON with a quick tap.
Anyone know of a quick and easy way?
Is anyone else having the same issue?
Double tap only works when the ambient display is showing (the clock before the lock screen).
If you turn off ambient display all together, double tap does not work.

Double tap works for me without ambient display being on.
I'm on stock 58.0.A.28.51.
Looks like it's one of the system apps whose permission I modified.
I just did a factory reset
It seems like a common issue with this phone. My tap to wake has never worked properly and it's driving me insane. Tap tap tap TAP TAAAAP, then it works. Sometimes.
Does anyone have a solution for this before I throw it out of the second floor window?
Yeah, that's one of the very few annoying things. I wonder if it has to do with the screen protector? There have been user reports of lower touch sensitivity (mostly at the edges of the screen) due to screen protectors.
Double tap isn't working again when ambient display is set to "OFF" and I have not messed around with system app permissions.
I did verify that 2x tap is working after I debloated the phone with AD set to "OFF". Not sure what has changed since then because I have not used this phone since debloat.
More details:
-2x tap will only work when AD is showing
-for as long as AD is showing that clock, 2x tap works
Double tap and lag-free notifications should work much better when you set "Smart activation" in Ambient display settings (lokk in "When to show Ambient display" settings).
Same issues, tried many things mentioned here and more ... you'd think simple things like this would work flawlessly in a high end phone. Really tired of digging and digging in the phone and online to find solutions, so frustrating. Sony will have to make something extraordinary in the future to convince me to buy another phone from them ...
It's way too long time have passed from the last post, but I was wondering about the same issue of double tap when searching for the answer had led me to this topic. I've recently bought two same phones, not Sony but Nokia 5.4 with Android 10 and stucked in gesture unlock too. Though this topic didn't helped me, later I've found the solution by myself and eager to share the way that did worked for me with everyone.
So, if the double tap to wake up the screen suddenly stopped working, try this:
1) go to Settings-System-Gestures
2) find the "double-tap wake" option and turn it OFF
3) back to home screen and lock the phone with the power button
4) unlock the phone with any way
5) go to Settings-System-Gestures
6) find the "double-tap wake" option and turn it ON
That's all, your favorite unlocking must work again (well, both my phones were healed). Good luck! )
Inversely, you can't disable tap to wake on the AOD.
Infuriating.
In any case, 3-taps always works for me
Including this phone and Pixel 2XL.
