Police can remotely erase Videos and Pictures - Security Discussion

I spoke with someone who recently got back from the Standing Rock protest. They had attempted to shoot some video and pictures of the Police. They found that the all the videos and pictures taken that day are unreadable by the phone. They show up as an exclamation point "!".
Other people at the protest said that the only way to save your pictures and videos is to put the phone in Airplane mode before you take the pictures.
I am not aware of any attack vector that the Police could be using that would work like this across devices and carriers.
Is anyone here able to explain how this is possible? Is it a backdoor in Android or are the carriers allowing this access somehow?
If the Police can remote wipe photos and videos of all devices in an area, what else can they do?

No doubt a state sponsored player could do this (or some "approved" 3rd party so that the State can't be held responsible?), however I wouldn't have thought the police would have the capability or the legal authority. But many US police forces do have Stingray which can give them the ability to listen into calls, sms etc. But I'm not aware of any way in which they can affect pictures on a phone, though they are able to downgrade from secure data protocols like LTE to less secure protocols, via Stingray, so who knows maybe doing that & used together with other exploits may give some kind of access, but still seems very unlikely to me but I'm no expert ........ though if they are using the Patriot Act or whatever and labelling protesters as terrorists then the gov could legally maybe use a whole set of exploits that aren't yet known to the public!
Still all seems a bit unlikely they would go to the trouble of doing this even if they can given there was press there with normal cameras.
Afterthought! Though using a Stingray would give them all the protesters imei numbers etc which would enable targeted "social engineering" attacks.

No they cant, I am shutting down this post as I'm not allowing conspiracy type posts on this forum.

Owning a Pixel 2 XL and keeping a decent level of privacy

I'm really tempted to buy a Pixel 2 XL but the privacy aspect of it freaks me out a bit.
I'm concerned with my online privacy: I don't have FB, try to avoid having a central provider of apps (i.e. Google), use a VPN, Signal, you get the picture.
Is it possible to stay this way and own a Pixel 2? Some specifics of things I'd like to avoid: microphone recording all the time, definitely not uploading my photos to Google Photos, Google having the ability to "see" my phone screen at all times, location being constantly recorded, etc.
Could rooting the Pixel 2 help with this? Also, does rooting to use something like LineageOS on the Pixel 2 negatively impact the quality of the camera?
Thanks!
How comfortable are you with building android from sources? The pixel 2 is supported by copperhead OS which would probably cover all of your needs.

First, as someone who spent years working on other company's databases, I can tell you from experience that the few people at Google who can access your data aren't going to be accessing it. When they're working on a database, it's not your data they're looking for, it's the reason the database isn't working that they're looking for. Once they find that they go on to the real work they're being paid for and try to catch up on the time they wasted getting the database (which may hold everyone's pictures or everyone's contacts) working. Fixing data isn't their primary job. And they don't have a moment to waste looking at your contacts to see if there's someone they'd like to call. Put someone in with a totally wrong ZIP code (like someone in Los Angeles with a ZIP code starting with 6 - which is Illinois) and they'll never change it for you. It's wrong, if they see it they'll know - but they'll never be looking at it.

And the VPN keeps a log of every connection you make, so that keeps it nice and centralized, if the government ever wants it. Bad idea.

Don't turn on your voice recorder. The Pixel doesn't record "all the time".

Not unless you want to use an app that requires root access that would "help with this". And none of what you're talking about so far involves root access.
Also, does rooting to use something like LineageOS on the Pixel 2 negatively impact the quality of the camera?

You can run Lineage without rooting. If you root, then install Lineage, you'll have to root again, because (as far as I know - I haven't run Lineage yet) Lineage doesn't come rooted. Does it affect the camera? Not if you still run Google's camera app. If you run a 3rd party camera app, probably. (Google does the HDR in the software of the camera app.)
If you want total anonymity, just do 2 things - never use a phone and never get on the internet. (Also never use a credit or debit card, don't have a bank account, pay cash for everything all the time, don't have a real job [wages have to be reported to the government - any government] ...) Basically, live totally off the grid. As soon as you get on the internet (even from a library's computer) you've left a trail. As soon as you've opened a bank account you've left a trail. As soon as you've applied for a credit card you've left a trail. And any of those 3 is a lot less secure than the data you back up to Google.
So you have a choice - live a totally paranoid life as a hermit in a cave, or learn to live in society, take normal precautions and stop thinking that everyone's trying to get your information. Very few people (other than organizations like your government's taxing agency) care. (I've been on the internet, storing data on servers, since servers used to dial each other up once a day - and I've never had any data compromised or had a "visit from the black helicopters". [And, on most sites, I've used my real name and real location, so I'm easy to find, if anyone wants to look for me.] I've been bothered more by people trying to sell me their brand of religion waking me up, and I don't have "No Trespassing" signs on my lawn.)
(Just don't use your phone for anything illegal. But don't use a computer for anything illegal either. If the police come for you they'll take your phone. But they'll take your laptop, desktop and all your papers.)

I'm just like you! I suggest to check all the settings on myactivity.google.com and turn every option off, especially "web activity and apps". I stay away from social networks and use a good VPN too, but I've just found out on XDA that it's a bad idea, as VPN keep log of your activity... What do you think??
I also use Orbot sometimes, but with all scripts disabled some sites are unreachable.
As to the photos, to tell you the truth I'm not concerned at all, since I only post pics of my cats, animals, wallpapers and so on...
I can't help you with rooting, this is my firt Android phone, I bought it in April!

Can you recommend an app for surveillance of another phone?

In an unfortunate set of circumstances I must put myself first and betray the trust of a person who I believe might have already done so to me.
I suspect my fiancee of having an affair. I have some partial evidence which might be circumstantial but my gut is telling me to pursuit it and uncover it all.
I know that there are generally apps that are keeping tabs on the phone: it's location, forwarding of facebook messenger, sms texts, call log and gps location, remote camera view snapshots and audio streaming of its surroundings and they operate while being in complete stealth mode.
I ask you if you can recommend such an app or a few so I could choose in order to snoop out what is really going on. :crying:
Please, can you recommend such apps?

First of all.Wrong Forum bro.Thr forum rules doesn't allow such Discussion. Secondly don't be so specific while asking stuff.Thirdly it is very much Possible but on old phones like at most android 5.0 due to major changes in Security. Fourthly there is another way but it requires to some extent a higher level of understanding of linux and how an android device handles it's OS.Maybe you can build a backdoor in it.Fifthly the samsung account manager usually handles that.Go look it up.No root no bull**** straight last 15 sms and calls along with location.

RANT - Screen Capture Blocked.

I can't believe Google allows screen-capture to by blocked. All of a sudden I can't do a screen-capture of Mint or my bank apps... WTF! I NEED TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT!!!
This type of thing is so nuts to me. Why is Google allowing apps to do this? It is my phone, my screen, I can take a picture of it with another phone (lame)... why should anything be able to block that?
I see there is an Exposed module to fix this issue, great, but I have have my first non-rooted phone for 3-months now (OP7P) and I have grown to be a big fan of Google Pay. It is complete BS that I have to lose that feature (and HD Netflix) in order to be able to take a screen-shot anywhere I please. What is this world coming to? This angers me to no end!!!
To avoid scammers? I mean it's logic [emoji848]
I disagree... If a rooted phone allows scammers to cheat Google Pay... they just need to design Google Pay better!
HD Netflix had nothing to do with scammers.
Taking a screen-shot of Mint/Banks/Netflix has nothing to do with scammers. I should be able to screen-shot and share whatever I want.
Our OS's and Browsers don't work for us anymore, they work for paywalls and DRM. It is wrong. Our OS's and Browsers should be built for us, and allows us to easily circumvent the trash paywalls and drm-limitations we put up with these days. If the content provider makes it possible for any unknown visitor to view their content, then they should not be able to stop people they track from viewing it, capturing it, and sharing it. Chrome and Android should be a tool for the user, not give control of key-functionality to each content provider.
I can take a picture of my phone with a secondary camera. Blocking screen-capture prevents nothing and is only an annoyance to the user. If they are worried about DRM, fine, make the screen-capture lower resolution with a watermark in the corner... don't make me get a second camera and point it at my phone in order to accomplish what I want to do (and have every right to do). This all started because I wanted to take a screen-shot of my credit-score to share with my wife (no identifiable information on the screen at all). Google+Mint have no right to try (unsuccessfully [2nd phone]) to take that ability away from me.
So... QUESTION:
Does anyone know of a way to fix this?
Possible Answer: https://repo.xposed.info/module/fi.veetipaananen.android.disableflagsecure
Does anyone know of a way to fix this while also keeping Google Pay & HD Netflix working?
(Assuming this is not possible, which makes me want to sue Google/Mint over this)
In a unrooted phone? Or rooted? If you root it you will lose the hability of viewing Netflix in HD wince it relies on verification of widevine L1 and since root fails to verify it and will report back a L3 (google what this is), your best option is using a modded Netflix client (available here on XDA) and magisk with this module: https://www.xda-developers.com/magisk-module-mock-locations-screenshots/amp/
To disable secure flag and enable the hability of taking screenshots on any app use the above module.
And in case you wanna use Google Pay use the methods available here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/magisk-google-pay-gms-17-1-22-pie-t3929950
And BTW since you guys are saying that taking a screenshot of a app is not a matter of security, when you disable the secure flag you are prone to get ransom ware and get your bank details leaked and other private stuff. Get informed when saying stuff that isn't true. Yes it's related to security... Google doesn't add stuff because they just want to and want to annoy everyone...
Thanks for the links. I will check out Google Pay on rooted hacks, but it is my understanding that is a constantly moving target that never stays working long.

No they really do! They do it because banks and drm people wanted it.
If being able to take a screen-shot is prone to ransomware, they should make the screen-shot more secure. If it is not a root-app, it should not be able to access my screenshots so easily. Don't prevent me from taking screen-shots sometimes because screen-shots are not secure... fix the root issue, make them secure.
They could block the screen-shot with a message as they do now... but make it so I can click the message and have an option to overwrite it. Again, the phone should work for its owner, not for content-providers. I should be able to overwrite any for-my-own-security feature that I want/need to.
They could make it so instead of Mint blocking the entire screen-shot, screen-shots worked with a black bar over account numbers or something. There are lots of options that don't involve telling the user "NO!" when they try to use a basic system-wide feature that has always worked everywhere in the past.

Google account/Android phone/life is hell

don't even know where to begin to explain the world I live in and this is the best place I can think of or somebody could possibly answer what the hell is happening.. no I will try to keep this summarized and not going to too much detail other than with the technical aspect.. so my girlfriend was going into my phone and I'm sure she was trying to get into everything possible like my Google account Instagram lineapp what'sapp snapchatocrosoft account amazon.account VK, everything... Now I'm sure somewhere along that she synced her phone because obviously a bunch of my files now ended up on her phone making her think that I somehow installed some virus to her phone which now in her mind she feels like if the phone's messing up or if the router is Messing up which my assumption is she was in the router messing around with settings and now she doesn't have internet when she goes to solve this problem she goes out and uses Wi-Fi elsewhere and now when she went back to the house she couldn't go to the Internet service provider website to be able to mess with the settings on the blue curve router from Shaw because her phone was saying she was in the states we live in canada. She's under the impression I've gone to some third party app site that allowed me to get some firmware that her words has mirrored her storage and it was my way of blocking her ability to see twitch and discord because I was obviously hiding that because I was talking I assume with other women on it ...
Alot of the issue started with the fact that I used to play a game called magic Rush and I had shared my account or given it let's say a player that continued on with it.. obviously giving the Google account because it was binded is the email to the account, caused a s*** storm of problems.. password manager was all synced across his device anything he downloaded in his Play store showed up in my history just making it look like I just deleted it.. she feels like I'm hiding files on my computer or my phone because of some of the apps he had downloaded the other guy in Guatemala that I had shared the account with he had a calculator app that was a vault for hiding files like pictures.. she's literally accused me of everything under the sun thought somehow Steam my Steam account was being used to talk to other girls or somehow I was hiding files because she would take a random file from Steam in one of the folders and when she tried to open it with when we are it would just show up like random numeric code complete gibberish and this is why I must have been hiding files I must have been encoding them because I had things like notepad++ and irfanview, she's told me that I've cloned her SIM card and I have a VPN in the states so I can use things like Vox talk or w.e phone app that's just for the states.. I'm on an s10 plus and she's on an s10 so now that we kind of got the Guatemala guy off the account there is still weird s*** going on she went into developer tools on Google Chrome and it looked at the source code when you're looking at the Google activity when you're logged into the account and it had lots of words like null and hidden and she was swearing up and down thinking that this was proof that I was being shady..
Does anyone have any idea what could have possibly moved my files onto her account whether that be through her signing into my Google s*** but I mean yeah she feels like my phone's infected her phone or my computer has infected hers and I think it was just her and experience self somehow enabling it to like share all files I don't know I can't tell you everything she's possibly gotten into but she's clicked on everything a woman could click on oh and side note if you reach this far and you read all this thank you for taking the time because this is a serious issue in my life right now this was also in the beginner or new help thread I will also attach pictures the cheese sent me over the last month or so showing that I was being shady and did some s*** to her phone that I had rooted it or mirrored her storage

Try proving in a way like using a root checker.
Get some one else's device and show the same root certificates...
This may help.
And did you show her that her KNOX is still intact and it did not trip.? If no, first do it... that way, you could prove that nothing just happened to her device and its still secure and not rooted.
Then maybe you could give her other explanations...

My Huawei P30 has been hacked with a RAT! can I still save my accounts?

I have a Huawei p30 phone with last security patch received in august 2020, not rooted and never been in strangers hands.
This crazy psycopath woman has been stalking me badly for a year, but then in september 2020 she shared a weird (fake) video with the image of a pixeled pony on my Facebook page. I clicked on it but strangely it won't open. Few hours later this crazy woman deleted the fake video and begun to write me about things I said privately to a friend via Whatsapp! and in the following months she started insulting me with fake Instagram profiles every time I chatted privately with other girls, making fun of the things I wrote to them. She seems to see everything on every social network! And even when I took a picture with a girl that I never shared but only had privately in my gallery, she reacted to it by insulting me!
I don't know what kind of trojan or RAT is this but I would like so much to get rid of it!
1) Can you guys tell me how can I get rid of this RAT? I've already searched with Kaspersky, Malawarebytes, Avast for Android but they can't see a damn thing.
2) Can I put my sim card with my whole whatsapp (and related backup messages and contacts) on a new device or I am going to risk?
3) Can I keep my Gmail and Instagram accounts by disconnecting them from the hacked device and changing passwords from a new device?
THANKS
Personally don't think your phone got infected by a RAT and/or Trojan: this type of malicious software requires root-access get granted to it.
IMO your issue is related to the social media you make use of, the method you login there, the passwords you use with this accounts.
You know that FB, WA and Instagram basically are ONE company, that your related account details get shared between them?

If you look around over the Internet there is PLENTY of new generation RAT trojans that take root permissions of Android phones with just one click. Some of them are called drive-by download, they use a buffer overflow mechanism. Off course you need security holes for this to happen, and Huawei is very very exposed to this, they never release security patches! Even the police officer I talked to when I filled the complaint told me that they see many cases like these. It's absolutely possible.

I want to say one thing to the one guy laughing underneath my post. ALL of my accounts were protected with double step autentication (2FA) and just yesterday, my phone received a series of notification about a Google chromecast device that was connected to my Huawei p30. I even got the last notification saying "you succeded connected google chromecast to your device". Now tell me how this is even possible, because I never had a google chromecast device and I was at work the whole time! Looks like there's a clone of my p30 smatphone out there. Do not aswer if you have no clue about new hacking programs.
1. Make sure that you have finished a full data backup.
2. Do a factory reset + wipe cache.
3. Change your passwords ASAP.
Just for your reference.
A side remark dedicated to visitors here who don't know what a RAT is:
A RAT ( read: Remote Administration Tool ) is an Android app that always runs as an Android service, what gets started at Android's boot. It has initially been developed as an university project. A RAT consits of a client module ( the mentioned Android service ) and a server module located somewhere outside of Android device, reachable via Android's network connection.
A RAT's client module only can get installed on Android devices with unlocked bootloader, AVB disabled and rooted Android. It's the user - and ONLY he /she - who allows a RAT service to get installed on Android
These are a RAT's functionalities typically available
Get contacts (and all theirs informations)
Get call logs
Get all messages
Location by GPS/Network
Monitoring received messages in live
Monitoring phone state in live (call received, call sent, call missed..)
Take a picture from the camera
Stream sound from microphone (or other sources..)
Streaming video (for activity based client only)
Do a toast
Send a text message
Give call

About the backup: can I just connect the hacked phone (offline) to a clean PC to transfer my files? I am afraid I'll transfer also the rat this way!

So you are basically telling everyone that when FBI is live monitoring your smartphone, that's because you CHOOSE to ALLOW a RAT service to get installed into your smartphone? I never ever allowed this thing to install inside my phone, all I did was to click on that fake video! and things like this, to mutuate the words of the police officer I talked to, do happen all the time!
My last 2 cents here:
If someone ( like FBI employee, spouse, life companion, etc.pp ) wants to monitor everything on your Android phone not having your phone in hands, wants to access your phone's data not having your phone in hands, he / she must install a monitoring app or RAT software ( e.g. AndroRAT ) on your Android phone. Point.
Have a nice day.

I'm positive with what you say, but I'm also saying that this monitoring app CAN be disguised as fake video or image, thus by clicking on it you will inadvertitely launch a series of payloads that will root and then hack your phone. This is a fact. It happened to me and if you give a look online you'll see how this works and how many apps are doing this (obviously you need HUGE security holes in your device to do that, and older Huawei devices, which are rarely updated, do have them).
