SOLVED! (at bottom)
I have searched threads here as well as other places and have had no success.
Device: Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3 (SCH-I535)
Info: Stock, non-root and no ROMS
Current firmware: KitKat 4.4.2
I was trying to use Odin 3.09 to revert to the firmware version 4.1.2 (which I got from http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/) in order to install CM 11. I entered the phone into download mode and entered the 4.1.2 firmware file. Everything loaded and connected fine. I clicked Start and it stopped at aboot.mbn and failed because I think 4.4.2 has a locked bootloader. I also think I tripped the Knox Security flag and therefore it is now softbricked. The phone can still go into Download mode but not recovery mode.
I followed two guides to unbrick it:
1) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2581166
The microSD card method did not work. I have not tried JTAG.
2) http://www.androidauthority.com/galaxy-s3-i535-unbrick-soft-brick-125413/
Odin once again fails and cannot flash the VRALEC.bootchain.tar.md5 file, leaving the same error as before:

This error appears on my phone:

What can I do now? Is my case different because I'm on 4.4.2?
SOLUTION:
Flash with Odin (thanks to cozzbp):

You are in the same pickle as everyone who took the 4.3 upgrade and tried to downgrade. You have two options
1 wait for the 4.4.2 tar (could take days)
2 try a little experiment by flashing nc1 with Odin and if that works (does the full flash doesn't need to boot) download the 4.4.2 update zip and flash it in stock recovery by holding power button + vol up + home at the same time from a powered off state.

Hmm, a few days isn't bad. It couldn't take longer than a week, right?
Is this the correct link for NC1? www .mediafire.com/download/fx8xu907ff48bo3/I535_NC1_Kernel.zip (take out the space after www)
Also, I could not find the official 4.4.2 update zip for my phone no matter where I looked. Any ideas?

You provided a kernel link just form looking at the title. I'm going to guess that this file is not 700+ MB. If it is not, then that is definitely not what ThePagel was referring to. He was suggesting Odin flashing the full stock VRUCNC1 tar from his thread. I am fairly certain this does not work but you can try since you have no other options.
4.4.2 update.zip.

nevermind... im dumb lol
Here's my problem which I was trying to fix for a week now. I got a Galaxy S6 (G920FXXU3COI9 - international) which was working fine but I decided to make some improvements (tmobile wifi calling, etc). So, I decided to root the phone with new kernel (S6-UniBase_BOG8_v2) and then put a new ROM in (Rapture 2.1, my build became G920TUV2COF8). And everything works fine but when I make phone calls on tmobile tower I'm getting nasty while noise (but wifi calling, viber, etc, work just fine. 4G network works fine too but it looks like phone reception is kinda low).
So, I decided to try another ROM or change modem/BL files but Odin 3.10.7 (and 1.8) cannot pass NAND write stage. On another hand, I was able to change kernels. I also tried to reinstall samsung drivers and use another USB port - same result. Trying to flash with new BL/modem throws error on the phone "SW rev check fail device: 3 binary: 2" which doesn't show up when I try to flash ROM.
Any ideas on how to fix noise or change ROM to international or T-Mobile one? I suspect that I'm using incompatible files somewhere but I tried 4 different ROMs with the same results.

Failed in sboot.bin means your flashing an older bootloader.
Sorry to say but you cant downgrade your bootloader.
Your phone has COI9 based from what you said. Where did you get the modem/bootloader file? Im suspecting it is not on COI9 bootloader.
Just flash a latest stock firmware from sam firmware to get the latest bootloader.

thanks. Thants what I thought the problem is. Can you send me the link for the latest bootloader/modem I can flash on my phone.
Do you think I can use T-mobile ROM with my international edition phone?
Dude, Im just using my phone right now, Just search your exact phone model in sammobile and download the whole firmware.
SamMobile provides original/verified/stock full firmwarw for your device. They wouldnt upload a single bootloader or modem img or bin files.
Maybe someone can share their extracted sboot.bin based from COI9. Just be sure to convert it to flashable odin file before flashing or else youll be facing some problems again. Or better, a ready made flashable odin bootloader based from COI9.

Many thanks, man.
I found the firmware on sams mobile but they have 5 different ones for PDA: G920FXXU3COJ1; I'm confused with CSC code. Thats why I was asking for a direct link.
Excuse my ignorance but by "convert it to flashable odin file" you mean .img to md5 conversion or something else?
And, one more question, I guess it is not a good idea to change ROM from 920F to 920T, or I should try few more 920T before giving up?
Hmm why would you want to flash a TMo version??? If I were you, just stick with your current ROM.
There is no direct link for sammobile, just forget what I've said with COI9 build number, just download the latest firmware for your region. If you find any file just pick the latest date and youll do good. It contains the latest bootloader for your phone.
Md5 thing is just for the checksum for odin. It is added for verification and its the most praticed and suggested way of creating ODIN flashable files.. But IMG will do good.

ok, finally got it fix, sorta.
Rapture 2.1 ROM gave me loud white noise during calls but the rest was working fine. The post says to flash the phone with BL and Modem files but Odin failed (I assume since I have newer BL already). So, I went back with latest G920FXX stock ROM and the phone works fine.
As title says, can i downgrade to 5.1.1 from 6.0.1? My phone is G920F. Will there be issues with bootloader? On sammobile forum, they said to me that downgrade is not possible because of bootloader.
Yes you can downgrade without any issues

first download the 5.1.1 stock rom
second run odin
third enter download mode using three buttons
forth click start
fifth when finished enter recovery using volume up home and power button
last do a wipe system and cache and reboot
yes, i know that, in odin i must ucheck autoreboot, but when finished installing the firmware, it stays in download mode, what is combitation of buttons to enter recovery mode directly from download mode
I'm currently using XtreStoLite Deo Mod v.2.4 - XXU3COI9 with engineering bootloader, root and knox 0x0. Can I clean install some stock MM ROM without tripping the flag and can I go back from MM to the mentioned ROM (5.1.1) with engineering bootloader without tripping the flag or damaging the phone in any way? Is it possible did any1 tried it? I know that if you update your bootloader to COI9 or higher version you won't be able to use engineering bootloader anymore, which means no root with knox 0x0 on 5.1.1.
Done, I put Lp following the instructions above, all ok.
After the flash of fw the phone goes into bootloop, just go into recovery and make various wipe.
For me the LP look is better and I have dozens of settings in more than MM.
Thanks.

So you were on stock android 6.0.1 with marshmallow bootloader installed on Galaxy S6 and you downgraded to lollipop 5.1.1 and flashed engineering bootloader again and Knox is 0x0? I'm asking because I just want to make sure. I want to install some stock MM but I don't know yet if I will be able to live without root and want to know if I can go back to my previous ROM and bootloader, without tripping the flag.

can anyone please help me with this?
+ 1.
I was on MM update and downgrade to LP because I liked the old stock clock widget.
Mainly because of my old themes work better with LP update.
MM clock widget is crap doesn't change shape or size with your themes. Plus the MM stock clock widget shadow is gone.
No special effects on lock screen either like bobble effects with MM update.
I hope they fix old themes to work with android 7 and bring back the old clock widget weather.
Who else likes the old LP update? I used December android 5.1.1
(XEU). Europe firmware
What version of MM were coming?
Thank you.
I tried but it does not work from G920FXXS4DPG2, Odin said FAIL.
hi, i upgraded my s6 to one of the latest builds of marshmallow, now i want to downgrade to lollipop.
when i flash with odin, it gets every time an error (with hidden). If i flash the lollipop bootloader, it stops the flash at half, and it fails...
so it's impossible for me to downgrade! i tried installing xtrestolite (lollipop version) but it stucks at "Samsung Galaxy S6", so it is in a bootloop....
how to solve?

You can encounter that problem when PIT or modem or bootloader are incorect for a rom version you're trying to flash with Odin. Did you manually flashed some modem/bootloader when you were flashing that custom rom? And which version of stock rom are you trying to flash with Odin?

No i didn't install anything besides the ROM. I tried installing all the MM files for the s6 found here http://updato.com/firmware-archive-select-model?r=SPR&v=Marshmallow(Android+6.0.1)&q=SM-G920P. It used to work before i flashed this ROM. Now i get a "fail" message every time.
Have you tried the firmware that officially came with yours?
I had once the same problem with a friends G925F which I tried the latest version of MM on and had the same issue. When installing back the firmware of our country it succeeded.
And you can always try Smart Switch the Emergency Recovery function.

Hello guys... I have a Samsung galaxy J7. On the backside of the device, the model number is written as J700F/DS. But on the about section in the setting, the model number is written as J7008.
